In Bless Your Heart: A Jeannie Johal Thriller, Susann Camus delivers a gripping, high-stakes mystery set in the deceptively quiet town of Greenville, North Carolina. Healthcare researcher Jeannie Johal is sent to investigate sabotage in a critical pharmaceutical study—but the mission quickly escalates when her new boss is murdered on day one. What should’ve been a routine assignment turns into a dangerous puzzle filled with coded conversations, hidden motives, and life-threatening secrets.

Camus builds a vivid world where tension simmers in every corner—from a correctional facility willing to trade secrets, to a tranquil arboretum masking deadly plants and even deadlier intentions. As Jeannie digs deeper, she’s forced to question everyone around her. Her intelligence and grit shine through as she navigates the close-knit community and its layers of guarded truths.

Tightly plotted and smartly paced, this thriller is as thought-provoking as it is suspenseful. Jeannie makes for a sharp and compelling lead, and the mystery keeps you guessing right up to the final chapter. A fast, immersive read that’s hard to put down.

One of the worst books I've ever read. The author introduces far too many characters. The story jumps around seemingly without form or function.

Thought-provoking thriller

“Bless Your Heart” by Susann Camus is a thought-provoking thriller full of wit and verve. The writing is effervescent in style, and descriptive in tone, painting a vivid and accurate imagery of the narrative, which I found to be well-balanced and relevant to today’s society.

Set in Greenville, North Carolina after COVID-19, the plot revolves around the sabotage of a research being carried out on a drug to treat obesity induced diabetes. Considering the significance of this research, multiple parties with their vested interests are involved, which lays the stage for the protagonist Jeannie Johal to begin unravelling the mystery.

From the beginning itself, we find ourselves connecting with Jeannie. She is a smart, caring, adept professional with a strong moral compass. We see her change, and evolve through out the story. From an obedient, reserved individual to a courageous, helpful woman, her transformation is chalked-out remarkably well.

The investigating duo of Harmony and Henry lend unique perspective to the story. Harmony with her outright impulsiveness and sense of justice is well paired with the laconic and calm Henry. As we follow them around, we are lead into a world of nerve-wrecking mystery and a series of investigations that ultimately culminate in one thriller of an ending.

The book is well-edited and structured into easily digestible chapters. The character arcs are well laid out interweaving the duality of human nature within a fabric of justice and morality. The description of the scenery and the food is swoon-worthy and delectable to the reader’s senses. You find yourself engrossed in no time, wanting to know more as the pages turn ahead.

Highly recommend this book to readers seeking strong woman characters with a plot focussed on solving mystery. Kudos to the author for crafting such an engaging, fun-filled read, well deserving of a five-star rating.

This is Susann Camus’s second book featuring Jeannie Johal as the main character. If you haven’t read the first book, you’ll quickly get to know who she is, as the author begins Bless Your Heart with a short summary about her.

The main story in Bless Your Heart follows a major pharmaceutical company that has teamed up with the Public Health Department in Greenville, North Carolina, to develop a drug that could improve the lives of millions of obese women. However, something seems wrong with the study’s data. Healthcare researcher Jeannie Johal is sent to Greenville to uncover why the results are being altered. On Jeannie’s very first day, her new supervisor is found dead, and from there, the reader follows Jeannie as she searches for the truth. There are several twists and turns that heighten the suspense. How are the Arboretum and the correctional facility connected to it all?

My review taken from my account on OnlineBookClub

I would rate this book 4 out of 5. The author’s use of clear, engaging language and careful editing makes the text both professional and easy to read. It’s well-structured, with thoughtfully organised chapters. The characters are vividly described, allowing readers to feel as though they truly know them, and the plot twists keep you engaged and eager to discover more.

However, early in the book, there is a very detailed description of the Arboretum and one of the women working there that, as a reader, I felt could have been shortened, as it didn’t add much to the story. There’s also a moment where one of the characters and his wife introduce religion into their dialogue, but it feels unnecessary, almost as if it had been included without a clear purpose.
It is a well-written, suspenseful book that captivates you until the end. Will Jeannie Johal solve the mystery?

Dr. Bach informed Jeannie Johal about a groundbreaking research initiative underway in Greenville, North Carolina. The focus of the research is on chronic lifestyle-related illnesses, particularly Type II Diabetes. As part of this endeavor, Dr. Dunn is leading a blinded study to investigate the effects of semaglutide on patients living with Type II Diabetes. The findings from this study have the potential to significantly transform the health outcomes of millions. However, not everything is going smoothly—someone is actively attempting to derail the research.

Upon her arrival in Greenville, Jeannie is eager and enthusiastic to immerse herself in the research project and become acquainted with the team. Yet, unknown to her, there are covert efforts underway to force her off the project. Among the team is LaDonna, the receptionist, who shows interest in her role but seems oddly out of place—almost as if she was hired for reasons beyond her resume. Then there’s Frank, whose overprotective demeanor raises eyebrows. While he appears to be guarding the project, Dr. Dunn remains wary of his true intentions. With deception lurking beneath the surface, the question looms: who is sabotaging the research, and why?

The narration is confident and compelling, drawing the reader seamlessly through each twist and turn. The plot is both suspenseful and thoughtfully constructed, supported by a cast of multidimensional characters. The cover design is visually appealing and reflects the tone of the book. Overall, this is a riveting read that grips your attention from the first page to the last. Be sure to add this title to your bookshelf—you won’t want to miss it.

A groundbreaking medical study is underway—one with the potential to transform the lives of millions by reversing Type II diabetes. Amidst this high-stakes environment, Dr. Jeannie, a dedicated physician, is dispatched to North Carolina to join the research team. Alone in unfamiliar territory, she must rely solely on her instincts while navigating a web of mistrust, uncovering hidden motives, and identifying who among the team is trying to sabotage the project.

The study is being led by the determined and ambitious Dr. Dunn. Should their efforts prove successful, it could mark a turning point in public health. Yet, not everything is as it seems. The data being collected shows troubling inconsistencies—irregularities that must be kept hidden from the powerful organizations funding the project.

Jeannie finds herself surrounded by a complex cast of characters, including Frank, Anderson, LaDonna, and others. As pressure mounts and time slips away, she must act quickly to protect innocent lives, especially with a correctional facility ominously close, heightening the sense of ever-present danger.

The story’s conclusion is both satisfying and impactful. The characters are intricately developed, each contributing depth to a plot that is as thought-provoking as it is thrilling. This compelling narrative lingered in my mind long after I turned the final page. The author has crafted such a gripping and well-paced storyline that I found myself unable to stop reading. The suspense builds relentlessly, making it impossible to put the book down until the very end.

Jeannie works as a quality improvement consultant within a Canadian hospital system. One day, she receives an urgent call from Beatrix Bach, who informs her of a critical assignment in Greenville, North Carolina. A diabetes epidemic is ravaging rural North Carolina, and Norma Dunn is leading a study on the effects of semaglutide on patients with Type II diabetes. Norma suspects that someone may be sabotaging the research.

She also learns that Frank, who manages the research project, left a high-paying job to do so. Dr. Dunn warns Jeannie not to trust anyone and to tread carefully with each decision.

Jeannie carries her own emotional burdens. Her husband, who wants her to return to India, once attempted to throw acid on her face when she refused.

The research focuses on adult women living in Pitt County, all of whom are severely obese. As Jeannie delves deeper into the project, she notices a disturbing pattern—two individuals have made the same errors in the data. What secrets will Jeannie uncover during her time in Greenville?

After finishing See Me by Susann Camus, I found myself eagerly anticipating the author’s next release. Bless Your Heart: A Jeannie Johal Thriller did not disappoint—it was absolutely worth the wait. The story picks up with Jeannie Johnson being suddenly pulled from her current assignment and sent on an urgent mission to Greenville, North Carolina. Her role there is to serve as a researcher, but it's clear from the start that her real task goes much deeper.

Jeannie arrives in Greenville at the behest of Beatrix Bach, a trusted figure who has spoken highly of her. Because of Bach’s strong recommendation, Dr. Dunn, the lead on a critical medical research project, places considerable trust in Jeannie. The project, however, is under serious threat. Someone from within the research team is deliberately undermining the work, and it’s up to Jeannie to uncover who is behind the sabotage.

Set against the backdrop of a correctional facility perched at the end of New Hope Road, the assignment is laced with tension and danger. Despite the risks, Jeannie is determined to uncover the truth and protect the integrity of the research. Her resolve and intelligence shine through, making her a compelling and admirable protagonist.
The narrative is fast-paced and tightly woven, keeping me thoroughly engaged from beginning to end.

This book is a smart, suspenseful thriller that grabs your attention from the start. Bless Your Heart: A Jeannie Johal Thriller follows healthcare researcher Jeannie Johal as she’s pulled into a mission that turns deadly fast. What starts as an investigation into data sabotage becomes a murder mystery when her new boss is killed on day one. Jeannie’s quiet confidence and sharp instincts make her a compelling lead.

The setting—a small Southern town with secrets—adds rich tension to the story. Between a shady correctional facility, a beautiful but dangerous Arboretum, and a tight-lipped local community, Jeannie has to untangle more than just faulty research data. Every location and character feels like a piece of a larger, carefully constructed puzzle.

What I appreciated most was how grounded the suspense felt. There are no over-the-top action scenes here, just smart deductions, believable threats, and a heroine who relies on observation and resolve. It’s a thinking person’s thriller, where the smallest detail can shift the entire investigation.

If you enjoy well-paced mysteries with depth, this one’s a gem. Bless Your Heart is clever, atmospheric, and full of subtle twists that keep you guessing until the end.

I don’t usually reach for thrillers, but Bless Your Heart completely won me over. From the opening chapters, I was hooked by Jeannie Johal’s quiet strength and determination. She’s sent to a small town to investigate data tampering in a pharmaceutical study—but what she finds is far more sinister. The murder of her boss, the strange atmosphere around a nearby prison, and the eerie beauty of the local Arboretum all create this subtle tension that kept me flipping pages late into the night.

Instead of the typical fast-paced, action-heavy style I expected from the genre, this story unfolds with a slow burn that really works. The suspense builds through sharp dialogue, small-town dynamics, and Jeannie’s growing realization that almost everyone has something to hide. There’s a quiet intelligence to the way she pieces things together, and I found myself drawn into her process more and more with each chapter.

Even if you’re not typically into crime fiction, this book has something for you: an intelligent heroine, a layered plot, and writing that pulls you in without overwhelming you. Bless Your Heart made me want to explore more in this genre—and I’ll definitely be following Jeannie Johal’s future cases.

If you’re addicted to true crime podcasts like I am, Bless Your Heart will be right up your alley. From the moment Jeannie arrives in Greenville, you know something’s off—and the story wastes no time proving it. Her boss ends up dead, the research project is falling apart, and almost every character seems to be hiding something. Honestly, I could picture this unfolding episode by episode on a podcast like Crime Junkie.

What makes this book stand out is the slow, creeping paranoia. Jeannie isn’t just solving a mystery; she’s trying to survive one. The nearby correctional facility adds this ominous presence in the background, and the Arboretum—normally a place of peace—becomes a source of dread. It’s that mix of ordinary and ominous that kept me hooked.

I also really liked Jeannie as a lead. She’s not flashy or overly dramatic. She’s smart, composed, and observant. You feel like you’re investigating right alongside her, piecing things together, second-guessing everyone. And the book respects that process—it doesn’t spoon-feed anything.

By the end, I found myself wishing for more Jeannie Johal stories. She’s the kind of character who could carry a whole series. Here’s hoping this is just the beginning.

Bless Your Heart by Susann Camus is a compelling thriller that immerses you in a richly imagined fictional world. The story centers on Jeannie Johal, who is sent from Vancouver to Greenville, North Carolina, to work on a medical research project. Dr. Dunn is leading a blinded study to investigate whether semaglutide can reverse Type II diabetes.

However, Dr. Dunn suspects someone is sabotaging the study and discreetly brings Jeannie on board for a month to uncover the culprit. Upon her arrival, Jeannie is warned by Dr. Dunn not to trust anyone, as revealing the sabotage could jeopardize the project’s funding.

Suspicion falls on two key figures: LaDonna, the receptionist, and Frank, the project manager. Can Jeannie uncover the truth before it's too late?

Susann Camus’s writing is engaging and polished, with a fast-paced narrative that keeps readers hooked. The storytelling is smooth and confident, while the realistic setting, drawn from lived experiences, adds depth to the plot. The eye-catching cover perfectly complements the gripping tale inside. You won’t find a dull moment in this thrilling read.

When Beatrix Bach asked Jeannie Johal to go to North Carolina, she couldn't turn down her offer. She was told that the health authority in British Columbia will continue to pay her salary while she is on an assignment in Greenville, North Carolina.

This assignment has its danger. Johal hasn't served her country in Afghanistan or Iraq but she has certainly experienced significant life challenges. Dr. Dunn wants Jeannie to conduct her investigation secretly and find out who is sabotaging the research. Will Jeannie be able to take the right steps on time?

Susann Camus’s writing is vivid and atmospheric, with a clear and accessible plot that never loses momentum. The characters are well-developed, each adding depth to the unfolding drama. Jeannie, in particular, stands out as a strong, intelligent, and relatable lead.

The story is full of suspenseful twists and unexpected turns, making it impossible to put down. I found myself racing through the chapters, eager to see what would happen next. It’s a gripping thriller that delivers both on substance and style—an excellent follow-up from Camus that leaves me excited for what she’ll write next.

As someone who works in healthcare, I was immediately intrigued by the premise of Bless Your Heart. It’s not often you see a medical research setting take center stage in a thriller, and Susann Camus does a great job weaving scientific stakes into a page-turning mystery. Jeannie Johal is sent to investigate data issues in a drug trial—something that’s all too real in this field—and quickly finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation.

I appreciated how accurately the research world was portrayed: the tension between ethics and ambition, the layers of bureaucracy, and the high stakes when lives are on the line. But even if you don’t come from that background, this book still works as a compelling mystery. The pacing is crisp, and the atmosphere—from the arboretum to the prison—is filled with unease.

Jeannie is sharp, methodical, and empathetic. Watching her piece together the truth while navigating coded conversations and small-town politics made for a satisfying and suspenseful read. This isn’t just a thriller—it’s a thoughtful, layered story that respects both its readers and its subject matter.

I picked up Bless Your Heart without knowing much about it, and it turned out to be a surprisingly engaging read. The story follows Jeannie Johal, a calm, intelligent healthcare researcher sent to a small town in North Carolina to investigate issues in a pharmaceutical study. What she walks into, though, is far more dangerous—a murder on her first day, a shady correctional facility nearby, and locals who seem to be hiding more than they’re saying. The mystery unfolds steadily, with just the right balance of tension and realism to keep you hooked.

What really stood out to me was how the book builds suspense through atmosphere and subtle interactions instead of over-the-top drama. The setting feels vivid, from the eerie Arboretum to the tightly wound community of Greenville. Jeannie isn’t flashy or dramatic, but that’s what makes her so believable and refreshing as a lead. This is a smart, slow-burning thriller that doesn’t try too hard—it just pulls you in and keeps you turning the pages. A great pick for readers who enjoy thoughtful mysteries with a strong female lead.

Our book club picked Bless Your Heart for its mix of suspense and strong characters—and it didn’t disappoint. The story grabs you right away as Jeannie Johal investigates a research project and stumbles into a murder mystery.

The Greenville, North Carolina setting felt real and atmospheric, with places like the research facility and Arboretum adding depth. The Southern tone came through naturally in the dialogue and social cues.

Jeannie sparked discussion—some liked her calm, logical side, others wanted more emotional warmth. But all agreed she was competent and relatable.

The plot was well-paced with clever twists and clues that respected the reader’s intelligence. It never felt overcomplicated or reliant on shocks.

This is a solid, engaging read that’s perfect for book clubs looking for suspense with substance and conversation starters.

I didn’t realize this was part of a series, but it stands well on its own. The plot is fast-paced and engaging, though it sometimes felt rushed. Some characters lacked depth, and the dialogue was occasionally awkward—especially a mention of a "Ford Escalade," which seems like a typo.

This is a clean read: minimal cussing and no graphic content (just some making out). It’s definitely more in the cozy mystery/romantic suspense category than a gritty thriller. There are some instances of racism mentioned, which might be uncomfortable for some readers, but they do reflect real-world themes.

While it wasn’t quite my style, I can see this appealing to readers who enjoy lighter mysteries with a romantic touch—think more Hallmark mystery than true crime. Not bad at all, just not quite for me.

Three stars is generous.

When I began reading this, there were several points where I seriously thought this book was an AI concoction. I actually stopped reading it to look the author up to see if they were a real person.

The characters lacked depth, but were stereotyped to the extreme. It was a difficult read for me for that reason.

However, the idea of the murders, etc. were good and the book had serious potential if the characters had been more developed and the stereotypes were toned down.

It felt like the author had good intentions on closing divides, but the stereotyping was so obnoxious that I can’t imagine anyone taking it seriously.

Bless Your Heart.

I found this story deeply engaging. The author did a remarkable job in building strong female characters and weaving in complex themes. It's truly a page turner. What I appreciate most about narrative is its message- that we should learn to embrace people from different backgrounds and empower others to grow, both as individuals and as society. As Susan campus wisely stated, ' Sometimes strangers are just different looking and different sounding versions of ourselves.' The book is beautifully written and well edited.

This book takes on every injustice this world has to offer: obesity, prejudices, racism, sexism, PTSD in veterans, mental illness, drug abuse, poverty, and I could keep going. I swear this book was written for a middle schooler, but then I think about all the topics it discusses, and I think there is no way this is for young children. I think this book could have been great, but it bit off more than it could chew.

not the worst book I’ve ever read but was sure a waste of time. I ended up just skimming the last 25% of the book because I was just so over it. The summary of the book made it sound like such an interesting thriller and it was everything but that. There was so many complex characters and side story lines and it did not come together well at all

I enjoyed the overall storyline and found the characters to be very easy to connect with. There were some grammatical things that made it a little harder to read in some spots, but still a fun read. Also I learned a little more about women’s obesity especially in the south and how it can be such a struggle.

What a ride! I loved how this book shows the dark side of ‘nice.’ Everyone in Greenville has that sweet smile and a ‘bless your heart,’ but underneath? Lies, ambition, and danger. The way Jeannie has to decode who’s telling the truth and who’s hiding something felt so real. Smartly written, with just enough science to make it believable but not confusing. Highly recommend

I devoured this book in two nights! The mix of pharmaceutical intrigue, southern politeness, and deadly secrets was irresistible. I loved how Jeannie had to read between the lines of every conversation it felt so real to how small town politics and power actually work. And that ending? I gasped out loud. A thoughtful, beautifully written thriller that deserves way more attention!
