A love story about a werewolf, a witch and an odd little New England town…

Amy Linden has a boring job and lives a boring life…or so it seems. But secretly, Amy is a witch who was raised by a family of witchy women who taught her how to cast spells, chat with ghosts and how to brew a truly enchanting cup of coffee. Nursing a broken heart after her girlfriend just left her, Amy’s feeling a little stifled by her small-town life. When her aunt sends her a letter asking Amy to come run her café in Wolf Town, Maine, while she vacations, Amy is prepared for some strong coffee, a little witchcraft and a lot of breakfast specials. And a fresh start.

But nothing could have prepared her for Wolf Town itself. Populated by werewolves, fairy hordes and lake monsters, the strange, secluded town isn't exactly what Amy was expecting.

Then she meets Morgan—the daughter of the werewolf patriarch of Wolf Town, not to mention the most gorgeous lady Amy has ever seen. When their eyes meet, Amy is utterly spellbound, and she knows that Morgan is the woman meant for her. But even destined love can sometimes be impossible, and Wolf Town has its dark past. Are Morgan and Amy meant to be together, or will Wolf Town’s secrets destroy them…and the town itself?

WOLF TOWN is a light-hearted, fantastical romance that will take you on a journey you’ll never forget. It is approximately 57,000 words (several days worth of reading or so).

“Wolf Town” is a Bridget Essex story published in 2014 that was released on Audible in October 2017. Her stories are very hit or miss for me, but even the stories I didn’t like are usually very well written.

Essex uses lots of narrators, and this is the first book Marina Barrett has narrated….if that is really her name! One of my favorite narrators, used twice by Essex, is Maria Marquis. I know Essex, like other authors, has published under more than one name. I have no idea why a narrator would use multiple names when narrating the same genre, and even the same author…but if Marina Barrett isn’t the same person as Maria Marquis I’ll be surprised! Whether they’re the same person, or two women with extremely similar voices and virtually identical speaking styles, I loved the narration of “Wolf Town”.

The story itself is typical Essex. Instalove set in a fantasy world of witches, werewolves, ghosts, fairies, vampires, sea monsters…and probably more I’m forgetting at the moment. When I don’t like an Essex story, it’s usually because I can’t believe one of the MCs is attracted to the other. In this case, I like both MCs Amy and Morgan, and I believe that they are mutually attracted.

The story itself isn’t complex, but it’s fun. While Essex does write some graphic erotica into some of her books, this book is very non-steamy.

I rate “Wolf Town” 4* for escapist fun, and I’m adding a star for the terrific narration, and because I will listen to the book again. So, 5* for another Essex book….the roller coaster ride of ups and downs with her books continues!

I just couldn't make myself keep going. I really love the idea of a town that's a safe haven for magical beings, and witch/werewolf lesfic sounded amazing, but this book was very disappointing. There was barely any plot or character development in the part that I read, although I made it through more than 2/3 of the book. First person narration isn't ever my favorite, but I found it more obnoxious than average in this book.

I wanted to like this book. I really, really did. The writing was beautiful (a little redundant and overly artsy fartsy at times), and the premise. A lesbian witch moving to a fantasy town and meeting her happily ever after werewolf? And that gorgeous cover? Cue the girlish squeee's of joy. Finally.

And then the reality sunk in. Toss any idea of a broom-riding, curse-making, spell-churning wicked witch out the window, and you get Amethyst "Amy" Linden, a 30 year old, New-Agey witch still living with her mother, in need of knee braces and probably suffering from some sort of heart disease, judging from how many times her knees start trembling and shaking and her heart tries to jump out of her chest.

Plot holes and disappointingly anti-climactic ending aside, if the editor had cut out the repetitive body movements (Amy's weak knees, thumping heart and Morgan's crooked grin and growling), this book would be half as long. Don't even get me started on the naughty scenes . . . I'm trying to figure out how bumping pelvises would be pleasurable in a lesbian relationship and it's. just. not. working. All that comes to mind is "Ow."

The author had a great idea, but the book is in need of an editor. And possibly someone with actual experience as a lesbian.

4.5 stars. This was a really fun, delightful tale. It was filled with so much imagination and it felt fresh, like nothing I'd read before. From the first sentence I was hooked. I got the feeling that the author wrote it with a smile on her face, it just had so much spirit and goodness in it. This author definitely has talent. I'll be sure to check out her other books. I Most definitely recommend reading this one.

I’ve been reading a lot of fantasy lately because I need the distraction. Wolf Town took care of all my fantasy needs and included just about all the fantastic beings that people have invented over the centuries – witches, werewolves, vampires, fairies of several kinds, ghosts and sea monsters and probably more.

The story centers around the witch Amy’s POV. She needs a change of pace and takes over for an aunt who needs a vacation, where Amy meets Morgan, a werewolf. While they begin a romance, Amy discovers a ghost in her aunt’s home, meets the locals and discovers other weird creatures. There is a little adventurous excitement as she learns about all the denizens and copes with problems. There’s also a mystery that she worries over. The ending moments would be more enthralling if it weren’t a romance because romances do have a formula. Nevertheless, it was entertaining. I’d love to revisit Wolf Town in another book to see how everyone is doing.

Iiiiii wanted to like this one, I really did but it just didn’t do it for me. Your mileage may vary and all that but I just didn’t connect to any of the characters very much and the romance was such an instalove situation that isn’t usually my favorite. I also… look I am ALWAYS on the lookout for werewolf books centered on sapphic women but there just don’t seem to be very many out there and this one didn’t really hit the buttons I was hoping for. The fantasy elements felt really shallow, the MC was a witch, but like… a pagan who didn’t believe in real witches and I could never quite tell what we were supposed to think of her. The love interest is a werewolf, but besides shifting like once or twice and saying literally every line with a growl and giving the MC a wolffish grin, it’s not very relevant to the story. Idk, others might really enjoy this, it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

adored…

I adored both of these main characters. I was invested in them receiving a HEA. Morgan took one look at Amy and went for it. It was like an immediate imprint and Amy did the same at first look. She was a goner.

I liked meeting the different creatures and other sentient and intelligent beings. The town was quite weird. However I am not sure why the witches didn’t come together to safeguard the town. They are witches, right? Or more like Wiccans?

It was a nice love story to watch unfold. I would have loved to know what happens in Fairyland.

This was so hard to slog through and definitely not worth the time.

Weak story, little to no character development ... this seems to rely on the idea of paranormal lesbians being a cool enough concept that no actual work needed to be done. The author and editor, if there was such a person, clearly did not have any fucks to give as evidenced by the enactment of a ‘witchy’ scene from ‘Hamlet’ complete with “double, double, toil, and troubles” ... 🙄🙄

A great Halloween read

Essex does it again. A love story in a happy little place called Wolf Town. Filled with werewolves, vampires, fairies, sea monsters, and a witch, who finds the love of her life in a tall, red headed werewolf. Well written, draws you in to a cast of characters. I highly recommend it.

Good read

Would have enjoyed it more if the witches had stood as one against the fairies. Why bring them all to the Halloween celebration and leave them out. Also couldn't they have done a protection spell?

A love story about a werewolf, a witch and an odd little New England town... Amy Linden and the beautiful Morgan MacRue were meant to be together. But will quirky (and sometimes dangerous) Wolf Town keep them apart?

A fun story with a bit of world building. It could have been a bit longer but it was cute with fun characters. The ending come all too soon. I could definitely spend more time in Wolf town.

Disclaimer - I'm adding just about every book I read in 2016 to Goodreads in December. I probably read this in... March.

I read a ton of lesbian romance novels this year. Maybe 1/4 of them were by this author. This one was not my least favorite, but not as good as some of her others, in my opinion.

I like that it might be setting up a cool kinda Halloween-town of supernatural beings, but that doesn't seem like it's really going anywhere (kind of a shame). The main characters have that "I don't really know you enough or "see" you enough to get why I like either of you, so I don't really, and I also can't see why you like each other" problem. I've run into this a lot in the lesbian romance genre. Bland protagonists.

The background characters of Wolf Town are entertaining, though. I feel like the author could set more books here.

**PS I stupidly gave away like every other Bridget Essex book I owned to clear out space for my Ex, but some how kept just THIS one? It wasn't even the best one.

A fantastic read!

Another excellent book from Bridget. Her books always take me away for a little while and this one is no exception. I loved the odd little town, the werewolves, the fairy hordes, the lake monsters and not to mention, the witches. Can you fall in love with a werewolf? Can you live in such a little town with all his weird characters? I do! I truly enjoyed it and I certainly recommend this to everyone. It's well worth the read.

Stuff that dreams are made of.

I've actually read this book twice. It's a great story full of all the fantasy one could put in a book. I found myself wishing I could find a place like this. I loved all the character's in this book. They kept the story adventurous. Bridget keep up the great work. This one's definitely keeper my friend.

Oh my gosh - I loved this book! It was the perfect Autumn read. I did have some tiny issues with it - there were a few grammatical issues and a little piece of the story didn't tie together enough for me, BUT the story line was great, the characters were believable, the romance was charming. I completely adored this book.
