The Flight of Torque

Rate this book
When investigative reporter, Tori, chases the story of an underground smuggling network, she stumbles into something significantly more sinister. Instead of the illegal trade of exotic reptiles, she finds a temple of devout snake worshippers. Taken by the cultists, Tori is subjected to a savage ritual and irrevocably transformed. Now something dark and primal slithers within.

Lucas, charged with Tori’s protection, struggles against an overwhelming sense of helplessness. He should be stronger, faster, and more powerful than any human, but in the past twenty years all of his charges have been murdered. Their deaths and his failures linger in his nightmares. They writhe in his mind like the chilling sense of brooding hunger that floods Tori’s thoughts.

Filled with violent rage and dark jealousy, the cult’s High Priestess, rears up between Tori and the truth. The only thing protecting Tori from the long, cold embrace of death is the darkness within and the tingling warmth and light of her guardian angel.

A gripping tail full of danger, suspense and mystery. It deals with supernatural, evil and darkness, but at this point it's not focusing on the dark, but the light. I hope it stays that way as the series continues.

I didn't plan on reading this book as I'm not keen on this genre. But I was curious about Rebecca's writing style. So I read the free Sample. By the time the sample ended, this well-written story had slithered its way in and sunk its fangs. I just had to find out what happened next.

Plot in a nutshell
A young journalist – Tori finds herself embroiled in the dark undertakings of an underground cult of snake lovers. They use her in a ritual to turn her into a half snake ‘Nagaran’. Because of that, she spends the rest of the novel trying to get out of the underground prison and battles to uncover the truth about her mysterious family. Told from two different perspectives, hers and her guardian angel’s – Lucas.

My thoughts
After an initial freak out over the snake theme, I found myself twirling my hair in the prologue, meaning I was intrigued. She had me thinking about her unique world made up of half snake demon things and guardian angels. Although there were moments I hesitated at the validity of a world where feathered guardian angels had gone unnoticed for centuries, there were many curious world building elements to keep me going. The book was fast paced and full of action however I did find myself wanting to know more about each character other than what the action was throwing at them and the switch in point of view was a little disorientating. It’s definitely a paranormal romance, with the relationship between the hero and heroine heating up by the end of the novel. I’m sitting on the fence whether I will stick around to read the next instalment. Not because she didn’t write well, she did, it’s just that on a personal note, I like more humour in my book – this was a little serious for me.

Book Cover
(Not the one here in Goodreads, the Amazon version)
Very professional looking, nice colours and composition for the Fantasy genre. I like how the scene on the front is reminiscent of a scene in the book. A few angel feathers floating down to the altar a symbol of the Guardian Angels fall from grace. It draws the reader in, which is what you want from a book cover. Perhaps I wouldn’t have made the typography embossed and textured to make it stand out more crisply from the bricky background.

The Flight of the Torque by Rebecca Laffar- Smith (Book One of the Nagaran)
An interesting beginning to what promises to be a somewhat dark and intriguing series.( Currently, it is not clear how many books the series will comprise.) This is a fast paced read, which will appeal to the many fans of paranormal suspense. Author Rebecca Laffar-Smith has created a heroine in Tori who goes from the real world into an altogether darker place. She learns she has previously unknown and unasked for shape changing abilities, which she has to learn to control.
Despite the cover of the first edition which I read, this is less a romance and more an exploration of power as well as an action /adventure story. The current cover is a more accurate reflection of the book's concept. Tori and her guardian Lucas are set to feature in more adventures from this new authorial voice.

The Flight of Torque

Tori never knew her mother; only her father. Tori is traumatized when, as a young girl, she witnesses the murder of her father by a flame haired woman. Raised by her grandmother, Tori is stricken when her grandmother passes. Tori is at a loss, adrift, with no one to cling to...

Tori is an investigative reporter who was assigned a controversial story: a story that could lead to better and bigger things. But instead of investigating a possible story, Tori BECAME the story. Taken by surprise, Tori is captured by an ancient cult, the Nagaran: worshippers of the Sacred Mother.

Held against her will, Tori is sacrificed to the Sacred Mother. Struck by a venom coated blade, Tori expected to die... But she didn't. Transformation. To Torque. The Charmer.... Serpenthrope.

Lucas Caelum is a Seraphim, assigned to protect Tori. Taken by the Nagaran, Lucas is restrained, beaten, and has his wings severed from his back. Despite it all, a bond remains between Lucas and Tori; one that not even death can negate. Tori and Lucas manage to escape, but inevitably find themselves drawn back... Back to the cult... Where answers await... And so much more.

This is one twisted, yet refreshingly unique tale. It twists and turns, loops and twines, much like the serpent whose story it portrays. An interesting take on good vs. evil.

Would rate it higher, but it needs re-editting; many instances of incorrect word usage, incorrect word tense and missing or incorrect punctuation.

As much as I tried, and I tried because it was a book written by a friend. I just could not get into it. Nothing against the book, it just wasn't my cup of tea.
