Nimmi Sheikh Chaudary lives in Islamabad with her husband, daughter, four fancy goldfish and her beloved plant collection. When she’s not working her day job breaking softwares for a living, she’s spending time with her family, or drinking chai and tormenting her characters. Sometimes, she’ll take a break from all the torment and do some art.

Her NA, Sci-Fi debut, FrostByte: A Desi Cyberpunk Novel, brings a South Asian twist to the Neo-Tokyo-esque setting prevalent in the cyberpunk genre as she tells the story of Hania Fatik, a murder victim that gets resurrected in the wrong body and Ayan Shihab, the man who grants her shelter for seemingly altruistic reasons. Join Hania and Ayan on their misadventures as they try to survive having their lives turned upside down.

FrostByte is a good fit for fans of Altered Carbon and Ready Player One.

This novel is a knock-out favorite of mine, and I can’t wait to showcase the print copy on my shelf. Wonderful story, beautiful art. Review below to see if you’re into the things that resonated with me.

This wonderfully talented debut author proves her chops by showcasing an authentically dark world, where often, terrible things happen even to well-meaning people. But it’s not excessively grim. Moments of serenity, kinship and hope break up those of panic, disheartening betrayal, and self-destruction. N.S. Chaudhury weaves an emotion-evoking journey, keeps you on your toes, and knocks you off your chair just when life seems at its sweetest.

The divide between the upper crust and scum of society is explored by giving one of the most influential rich girls in the world a rough landing. Once, her biggest worry was the Karen-like clients of her family-owned corporation. Now, Hania winds up having to survive by gaining favor with a group of (debatably) big-hearted mobsters who won’t stop getting themselves into trouble–angering every possible faction known to man–and yanking her into their self-destructive spiral.

The four main characters (two of whom have POVs) give off a cocktail of found-family, frenemy, and “what the f did y’all get us into, again?” vibes. Their moments of banter stood out, and made me feel like I was a fly on a wall, seeing a real exchange between people who love each other so much they could never express it, except through roasting the f out of each other.

Frostbyte doesn’t shy away from exploring real hope or real darkness, which is what makes it such a complete experience. No spoilers here, but I absolutely loved the ending as well. If I can only describe it with two words those would be: Gut punch. I feel like I’m going to be processing that ending for a week or two, at least, something that only happens to me with the best of stories–the kind that change my world view just that little bit.

If you love sci-fi or cyberpunk you should probably have this one in your library.

Now THIS is how you do a desi sci-fi adventure. More to the point, a desi sci-fi CYBERPUNK adventure with an incredible and unique premise that both boggles the mind and keeps the reader hooked. Keeping this review as spoiler-free as possible, Chaudhary’s debut novel takes us to the far, far future of Farawai where AI, virtual reality, and cybernetics have evolved and become symbiotic to the lives of every human being. Now that would automatically make you think of a utopian society, but Frostbyte shatters that illusion right away. If anything, it is a grim reminder that despite centuries of technological progress, the inherent differences of class, privilege, and social status don’t just exist but are amplified to the nth degree considering that there are far more tools to keep the populace in line. While not completely going on dystopian lines, Farawai has plenty of corruption and hopelessness among the powerful elite and the dregs of society that offers a broader examination of socioeconomic conditions between the haves and the have-nots.

Add to that the scope of virtual reality, AI, and cybernetic add-ons that offer people so much more of life, and Frostbyte becomes a highly vibrant novel with tons of world-building. And it’s hard not to root for the characters themselves, particularly the leads Ayan and Hania who come from two opposing social strata, as they find their lives transforming in ways they had never imagined once they cross paths. The dynamic between the two, though veering toward the romantic, is kept pretty unpredictable at times considering the circumstances they find themselves in, making the reader feel a little perturbed at what they might do next. But by the end, their relationship becomes one of trust and reliance that sets things up very nicely for the next installment—oh yes, SEQUEL!

Overall, a fantastic read and highly recommended for fans of sci-fi and cyberpunk fiction.

I had the honor of beta reading this Desi cyberpunk story packed with jaw dropping world building, fresh culture and moth-watering food descriptions. This book’s like Altered Carbon meets Ready Player One.

It’s a wild ride packed with so many layers- tech, complex plot, compelling characters, culture and virtual reality. The story is complex and ambitious and it takes some focus to really sink into it, but the effort is absolutely worth it. The characters are morally grey and have great banter.

My favorite thing was the Desi culture that brought a realness and richness to the whole thing.

Also the author does all her own artwork 🤩

Can’t wait for book 2.

I was given a free ARC in exchange for an honest review. I'm so thrilled that Chaudhury finished this book after so many years of hard work! It's been exciting watching this story take shape into the Desi Chyberpunk chonker that it is. It has a lot of Altered Carbon and Blade Runner vibes. There were some unexpected twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. 4.5 rounded up

Okay. So look. I love cyberpunk. Full stop. I knew when this came across my feed by way of Zaid Hasan (author of The Ore Monger), I had to find out more and apply for an ARC.

I had no idea going into this what to expect. Admittedly, I don’t know a ton about Desi culture and most of my knowledge of cyberpunk comes from the TTRPG Cyberpunk 2020 and things like Blade Runner. Most cyberpunk that I can think of, are set in a US (a vague New York or LA) city. After reading this, I am now demanding there be more Desi/SE Asian cyberpunk stories because c’mon, it seems like such a rich area for a perfect blend of tradition and transhumanist lifestyles. For example, the city is built on a level system, where the further down the older the buildings become, and yet, even those on the lower levels still have some sort of links to technology. Or have developed their own less expensive, but still as good, tech as the elites in the upper levels. I also really enjoyed this being set during Ramadan and how it was still observed in this world of flashy tech and mood boosters.

Nimmi has opened my eyes with her work. The story she weaves is intriguing and full of characters who feel real. She really took a hard left turn in chapter two, let me tell you, I was like “oh surely not,” and YUP. But then she pulls it back, sits you down with a cup of tea (or coffee, if that’s your preference) and tells you more. And more and more and more..

I will admit, there were a few points I got a little confused about who was talking to who because of all the various aliases (that’s cyberpunk, baby!) but once I got it sorted, I was also sorted. There was so much I didn’t see coming, things that made me smile, and things that made me want to rage right along with the characters. I couldn’t even begin to imagine all the trials, betrayal, and heartbreak Ayan, Nez, Key, and Hania dealt with every step of the way, there were so many times where their little found family was just starting to stabilize only for it to be upset again by another reveal.

We also get treated to what seems to be the beginning of a verrrrrrry slow burn romance subplot. Very curious about where that’s going. I love a good will they, won’t they.

This book also made me so hungry, like, I can’t tell you the amount of times I’d pause in the middle of a chapter and wonder if I should order some Indian food, or at the very least, some samosas. I didn’t, but just know, I had the order ready on GrubHub every time.

Anyway.

Thank you Nimmi for writing this, letting me to ARC read, and showing us there can be more to cyberpunk than grimy LA/NY. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this trilogy!

Frostbyte is a delightful dark fantasy that focuses on a South Asian Desi perspective in a Cyberpunk Universe. Chaudhury’s debut novel is loaded with beautiful imagery, metaphors, and a bioluminescent setting that takes the novel out of the park. It was difficult not to fall in love with this narrative that takes us on a journey to rebel against the status quo! Also, a talking cat ai – what more could you want from a cyberpunk narrative. This gives off Stray meets Ghost in the Shell vibes.
Writing sci-fi is difficult and I commend the author for creating such a vibrant setting while delivering an elaborate storyline. Too many sci-fi stories get lost in the setting but the plot against the blacklight here truly compliments one another. The character’s growth throughout the story feels relatable and the depth shines through the protagonist’s desires. The dialogue is immersive and makes it feel like you are across the table from the characters. The mix of cultural references and future tech creates a unique experience to perceive the Cyberpunk experience from diverse cultures.
The ending really stands out and is worth taking your time to read it through. I love narratives like these that make me really take my time through to get the full impact of the story. The dialogue was superb and really made the plot come alive. Each element of this story is a reason to place this on your bookshelves this spring! Thank you Chaudhury for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

A piece of advice? Do not read this book when you have things to do. You will not want to put it down and will consider lying in bed all day to finish it. You have been warned. Words cannot truly describe how I feel about this book. I’ve never been one for sci-fi or technology based books, but this author has convinced me otherwise in a way that has given my previous opinions whiplash. The storyline was so perfectly paced, at no moments did I feel the story was going too slow or too fast. Each character had a steady set of development, and we KNOW I love my side characters so I can guarantee you, every character was PERFECT. There were times I was lost, but that only made the story better as I connected the dots, and the plot twists THAT I DID NOT SEE COMING? I also have to applaud this author for writing the books in a way where the characters knew about their world (obviously), but I was never lost even without so much description on every part of the world. It was written so perfectly. Though, I do need a sequel like… now.

Hania Fatik is pampered, successful, and has a loving parent, but all that changes when she is killed overnight and illegally resurrected. She tries to navigate her life in the trenches.

Ayan Shihab meets Hania, passed out in front of his store, and is forced(?) to take care of her.

I've been trying to get back into sci-fi novels, and this just rekindled my love for it again.

This is a desi Cyber punk novel where all the characters' interactions are done justice.

I enjoyed that all of their flaws and traits were interwoven properly. I could understand where they were coming from and love their interactions with each other

in other words, if you love Ace mc, romance, action, a bad guy that you understand but they deserve it, This book is for you.

It ended on a cliff hanger , i need book 2 now🥹

FrostByte has some of the most interesting technological worldbuilding I've seen in a very long time, and incredibly compelling characters with some truly gut-wrenching, heart-aching moments. The threads and plot twists were dangled so tantalizingly throughout that I had to tear myself away in order to sleep sometimes, and it's clear N.S. Chaudhury knows what's what when it comes to computers and technology. While the writing does have a bit of awkward clunk throughout, and the pacing fluctuates like a jellish at times, the mystery of kept me hungry for more--figuratively and literally, as Chaudhury's depiction of South Asian cuisine is truly mouth-watering.

Overall, FrostByte was a fantastic romp through this Desi Cyberpunk world, and I can't wait to see where the author takes the story next. If you're a fan of cyberpunk, sci-fi, or just really good stories, definitely go check this out!

I read and review many books, and I always feel like I have to warn about my overall dislike for Sci-Fi beforehand, but it's time I accept reality. I LOVE SCI-FI, but only when it comes in the form of absolutely awesome books. This is my first time reading Chaudhury, and her debut novel already made me a fan.
This Cyberpunk novel is fast-paced, action-packed, and charged with strong emotions. A delightful cast of morally gray and quirky characters carve a life in Faraway, a South Asian inspired mega city, while they kick ass in the not-so-legal underbelly of the city, and the virtual world.
I was excited to compare this with Altered Carbon and Sword Art Online, when I realized that's exactly how the author described it. So yes, I can confirm you will be able to find all this awesomeness in this story, as well as some very intense and emotional scenes. The way trauma and grief are portrayed here will rip your heart out.
Read this! Please! But be aware that the ending is brutal, and you'll be craving samosas for at least a week after you finish reading.

This was a great read, and I only wish I’d started it sooner! From beginning to end the characters are believable, and the world is so well-built that every person in it feels real. There were moments I could predict, and many more that I couldn’t. The book wasn’t perfect; no book is. But this one pulled me into the world and left me wanting even more. I want sequels to continue this story, prequels to give more background on some of the main characters, and a short story collection about the many people we only see in passing. Chaudhury has given us a world to return to over and over, given the chance. Thanks to the author for sending an advance copy of the book to read; all opinions here are my own.

Ambitious. Highly complex. Skillfully executed.

I discovered this author during a writing challenge on Instagram where I was introduced to her writing style and characters from her (then) upcoming debut FrostByte. I was so charmed by the writing and the characters’ diverse personalities, when it came time for the book’s release, I was excited to jump in.

What I discovered was a mind-blowing cyberpunk novel filled with diverse characters, impeccable world-building, and a captivating storyline full of clever twists.

I don’t usually gravitate toward action-packed stories. I am a more character-driven reader, and I was delighted in the characters in FrostByte. The main characters are all POC with such diverse personalities, you never have that confusion of who is doing what that I so often find in sci-fi type novels. The world-building is incredible, heavily influenced by south Asian religion and cultures that added a robust layer to the story. Speaking of layers, the main location of Farawai built vertically was so clever!

The story follows an elite member of society Hania, who is murdered and her "souldata" illegally resurrected in a new body. Thrown in with the "lesser society," Hania has a lot to learn, the least of which is who killed her and why. This book features found family, addiction, grief, acceptance, and being thrown out of your comfort zone to finally learn who you are.

It is obvious the dedication and commitment the author took to perfecting her setting, characters, and storyline – nothing short of Steven Spielberg! It’s impossible to believe this book is a debut.

While the first in a planned trilogy, I found the ending quite satisfying while still leaving readers wanting more.

I am a Science Fiction fan and to my knowledge this is an entirely original story. Every time the plot seemed to touch on a known path, we were dragged away from the beaten path an presented new possibilities.

Exquisite World-building! Intertwined with cyberpunk elements, a culture so different to mine was presented so vividly as to make the Frostieverse truly an immersive experience.

The story follows closely the inner struggles of several of it's characters, while still keeping the air of mystery strong enough to keep the reader wanting to know more about them. As the first book of a trilogy, it connected us to the lives of the main characters, but still kept some things undisclosed, luring us to come back for the sequels.

I am still in denial about some things that the book states to have happened, because in a world where death is just a new beginning, nothing is out of the realm of possibilities.

I truly enjoyed the author's voice, as I found both the outer scenery and the inner lives of the characters to be truly well built. My only problem was not understanding cyberspace's limitations.

I have found the dialogue and the emotions shared by the characters to be believable and relatable. And there were many emotions displayed. Also, uncharacteristically, I was pleasantly surprised that I can follow the characters actions, their position relative to each-other, their moves and reactions, relative distance and movements in the landscape. I must confess, this clarity level was a new experience for me, one that I can say I truly enjoyed.

I really liked reading FrostByte, and I recommend it to anyone who is a Sci-Fi fan, who want to dive into a truly well built world or a character driven story.

Brew a big cup of chai and get comfy, because FrostByte is an emotional rollercoaster full of betrayal, secrets, and mystery that you won’t want to put down. Set in a futuristic South Asian world where death isn’t always the end, FrostByte follows social elite Hania as she gets illegally resurrected as a commoner following her murder.
To help her adjust to her new lack of status are a found family consisting of Ayan, Key, and Naz – all of whom are vibrantly portrayed, endearing (though sometimes a little scary), and hide more secrets than the newcomer could ever imagine.
The story is compelling, the pacing tight, and the world immersive and vividly described. The futuristic tech and social structure are clearly explained but without unnecessarily dense detail, there’s plenty of witty banter between the characters, and lots of fun moments to lighten the mood.
Which provides a nice balance, because there’s plenty of tension, action, and drama to keep the reader glued to the edge of their seat, and twists that’ll take your breath away.
If you like morally grey characters you’ll fall in love with, a futuristic world you can get lost in, and a series of mysteries to keep you guessing until the final page (and beyond!) then do yourself a favour and add FrostByte to your TBR pile.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Firstly, the world-building was incredible in this novel. The level of detail and intricacy that went into the process must have been massive and it definitely shows! That was one of the best features of the book for me. The imagery especially used when describing the world/environment was great and created a really vivid atmosphere.

The dynamic between the characters was also great. I especially liked the scene between Hania and her father at the beginning of the novel. It was so well-written and absolutely nailed their family dynamic so well.

The scene where Hania is looking at herself in the mirror (I'm being vague to avoid spoilers) was so gut-wrenchly relatable, especially as a trans person, and I thought it was incredibly well done. That really stood out to me as one of the best scenes from the book.

As the novel progressed, I started to get a bit confused between all the characters, and this lessened my enjoyment slightly but that's my fault and no reflection on the author.

Overall, a really fascinating read, with incredibly impressive world-building, and dynamic and interesting characters.

What a great book! This cyberpunk novel is rich with vivid world-building, complex characters, and an exploration of South Asian culture.

The story is set in a neon-lit city, where the lines between right and wrong are constantly blurred. What really impressed me was how Chaudhury tackles tough themes like identity, power, and loyalty. The characters of Hania and Ayan are well-woven throughout the narrative, with their struggles and triumphs feeling deeply personal and relatable. The writing is stunning, drawing the reader in.

Overall, Frostbyte is a must read for anyone who loves science fiction, fantasy, or great storytelling in general. It's a challenging, thought-provoking, and just a fun read.

Wow! N.S. Chaudhury’s FrostByte is an electrifying dive into a vividly imagined Desi cyberpunk world, blending rich cultural detail with a gritty, high-stakes narrative. The story follows Hania, a girl from the 'right' part of Farawai, who is murdered and illegally resurrected (yep, it’s a thing) in the wrong body… It’s hard to say much more without spoilers, but if you enjoy unique storylines, morally grey futuristic worlds, corrupt authorities, black-market digital identities, relatable characters, and mischievous AI cats, you’ll love this book!

This book is exceptional on every level.

The world building sucks you in from the first page. The characters force you to fall in love with them. The storytelling is both fast paced and nuanced.

Frostbyte has all of the qualities of Cyberpunk that are fun and familiar, and yet somehow feels so original and brand new.

Desi culture is so brilliantly weaved into the world and the story. This author is supremely talented and I will forever read anything she writes.

Dark. Intriguing. Complex. A story that makes you question everything and keeps you on your toes the entire time. A Desi Cyberpunk novel to push the boundaries of new worlds, AI and other technologies. A novel that resonates so easily with so many of us. A tale of love, friendship, devotion, and sacrifice. A story of inner demons, thick inner walls, and an all-encompassing guilt.

And it is all interwoven beautifully and masterfully in FrostByte, Book 1 of N.S. Chaudhury's Frostieverse Trilogy.

If you want a story that will grab you and won't let go, a story that will make you think, make you dig deep and try to resolve the hidden mysteries, uncover secrets of a technologically advanced, cyberpunk world, then hop on and let me take you on a ride. A ride through a world so advanced in the ways of artificial intelligence, yet so stuck in the ways of classism and power-hungry race. A world where one could live limitless lives, and others scrape the bottom of the barrel. What would happen if the elite of the elite suddenly found themselves at the bottom of society?

Nimmi has entwined so many different aspects of society at its highest and its lowest. She has dealt with serious topics and done them with the utmost respect. Her characters feel so raw and so real, lost in the ghosts of their pasts while trying to find a way forward.

The universe Nimmi has created may be an imagined one, but the feelings, the thoughts, the ideas—they are all real and true. Hania's life (and death) circumstances, her values and worldviews shattered and rebuilt, Ayan's ghosts and the guilt he carries wherever he goes, Naz's strengths and faults, Key's bubbliness and exuberance—they are real and relatable. Technology may help our lives in so many ways, but it's our hearts and minds that can truly change the world.

You need to read FrostByte, and you need to experience it.

It will gift you
- Desi Cyberpunk world,
- Full POC / Brown cast,
- Snarky AIs,
- Ace MC,
- FMC Resurrected in the Wrong Body,
- Slowest of Slow Burn romantic subplots,
- Found Family,
- Riches to Rags,
- Morally Grey, Anti-Heroic characters,
- Mental Health Rep,
- Virtual Heist.
It will also gift you a soul-bounding story you won't be able to let go of.
