Runaway Prince Hotel #1

Coral Prince Conundrum

Rate this book

The handsome dude I’ve been crushing on is actually a prince of the ocean. And now, together, we have to save humanity from aquatic war—no pressure, right?

Working as a barista near the Renversé Hotel is supposed to help me pay for grad school and get me out of my dad’s shadow. Flirting with the super hot dude who works at the pool is a sweet little bonus.
But then I discover he’s royalty. He’s literally the heir to the Coral Kingdom throne, and he can control water and marine wildlife. I shouldn’t be that surprised since this place is nicknamed the “Runaway Prince Hotel”.
I can keep his secret, and he trusts me since I, too, want to protect the oceans. But the stakes get higher when he claims his kingdom wants to plunge the seas into a never-ending war. Step one of our he needs me to pretend to be his fiancé.
Trying to not fall for the sexy aquatic prince might be harder than protecting humanity. But enemies are around us, and losing this prince could hurt me more than anything. We’re not flirting over a cup of joe anymore; we’re trying to save the world—what a conundrum we’re in.

“Coral Prince Conundrum” is a spicy male/male urban fantasy romance. This epic tale involves water magic, coffee dates, a pet pelican, and traveling the oceans on the back of a dragon. It’s book 1 of “Runaway Prince Hotel” collab series, where magical royals find love over a cup of coffee, HEA guaranteed.

CD Rachels has been coming up with stories since he was little. At first it was all about superheroes and pocket monsters, but his genre of choice has expanded since puberty.

He’s been consuming young adult gay fiction since he was a teen, but within the past five years moved up to the big leagues of gay adult romance. In 2020 during quarantine, he burned through more male/male romance books than he ever had in the previous 29 years combined.

He lives in New York City with the love of his life and is a nurse by trade. When he’s not reading and writing, he’s playing board games and practicing music. He is honored to become a self-published author, and if you’re reading this, your support means so much to him that it’s giving him a tingly feeling (in a good way).

3.5/5. I’m not saying I hated it or that it was bad, but it desperately needs editing—proper editing, not just proofing.

There were so many inconsistencies and wonky bits that it was a struggle to enjoy the good parts. They fucked with the vibes. And that sucked, because it was super cute and swoony, fluffy goodness. But those errors, though. They really took away from everything. I don’t want to be spoiler-y, but there were lots of contradictions (a lot of inner dialogue/thoughts that didn’t make sense with a character’s outward actions, for example), a scene in which the fake-fiancé trope it had only just popped off was basically invalidated… stuff that really threw off the entire groove.

If you work around or ignore the off things, it was a sweet romance with a lot of nods to current global issues in creative ways that didn’t come off as preachy/snobby (you know the ones). I always love this author, I just do not love their editing this time. It needs some TLC, but it’s worth reading for sure.

This was fun, fluffy, cute and swoony. I really enjoyed this new shared world and I think it was such a great idea. I really enjoyed the idea of a runaway prince hotel, and I really enjoyed the underwater kingdom of Seero.
The first time Daryl saw Seero was funny and I really enjoyed their relationship. Seero and Daryl were really cute and I loved their swoony moments.
This was lighthearted with a bit of drama and a very cute ending.

A tale of two princes - one of royal blood and one of big business - find themselves in line to inherit opposite sides of an ecologically based war. Star crossed lovers at it's best. Daryl is working at a barista to pay his own way through earning his marine biology degree because he refuses to use the money his father acquired with his shady and harmful fishing practices. Seero is the prince of the oceans and his father is ready to wipe out all of humanity for they way they have destroyed the ocean and it's natural resources. Seero would rather get to know the humans first before arbitrarily destroying them all.

The interactions between characters is what makes this story so easy and fun to read. Every quibble, snarky remark, or passionate expression makes the reader laugh, blush, or possibly cry. Come for the intriguing plot and stay for the amazing characters.

Recommended for fans of C.W. Gray's Silver Isles series and G.L. Carriger's San Andreas Shifters series.

☕ 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮 × 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 👑 -- i got really intrigued by this paring, it made me expect a sweet, cozy atmosphere with a bit of a twist/magic. which this book kinda delivered, tho not in the ways i would've thought. it was still a somewhat lighthearted read with sweet characters who were enjoying their coffee dates (even unknowingly that those were kinda dates♡), but they also had secrets to hide (including their identities, who they really were) which made it an intriguing story.

𝑨𝒔 𝑰 𝒔𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒄 𝒄𝒂𝒇𝒆` 𝒔𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒐𝒕 𝒃𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒌 𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒉 𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒓𝒐𝒘, 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒎𝒆 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒂 𝒕𝒔𝒖𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒊: 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒉𝒊𝒎.

🌊 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘆 -- i found the whole concept of this special hotel for runaway princes quite clever, but the whole world building was interesting too, which wasn't too complicated but still unique with pet sea dragons & sassy pelicans, water magic, and an entire hidden underwater kingdom. i enjoyed exploring this world, especially below the surface!

𝑰𝒇 𝑰 𝒌𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝒉𝒊𝒎, 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝑰 𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒐 𝒂 𝒇𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝒐𝒓 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈?

🐡 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 -- apart from the main romantic plot, there was an important plotline regarding our oceans, its wildlife & the ecosystem throughout the whole stoy that carried a relevant message to todays time. i loved how both MCs cared deeply about preserving marine wildlife and how they came together to find solutions to maintaining it. this plotline was probably my fave, and which kept me reading tbh.

💍 𝗳𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 -- the MCs' relationship developed kinda strangely which was sometimes jarring.. and over the top, but not really in a good way.. i enjoyed their sweet moments, especially when they started to get to know each other (wish we could've seen more of that, and more in depth). but their inability to communice with each other especially about their feelings was not my favorite at all.. it was frustrating to see them "suffer in silence" and question how the other felt.. especially at the fake engagement part which was at around 60-70%!!💀

🤎 𝗕𝗜𝗣𝗢𝗖 𝗿𝗲𝗽 -- written by an own-voice author♡

📘 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗛𝗘𝗔 -- while this is the first book in the Runaway Prince Hotel series, a collab by different authors, it can be fully enjoyed on its own as well.

💭 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: the pacing of this story made it an easy & quick read, which i appreciated (& that it wasn't dragging too much), however sometimes things progressed quickly without enough showing which made it hard for me to really connect with this story & its characters. it also didn't help that sometimes the characters didn't make much sense, their actions contradicted their thoughts & were inconsistent with what were established previously - making their characters confusing, unreliable, and at times, aggravating. also, i might sound like a bitter sad person but i could not believe how these MCs were always *chuckling, smirking, laughing, smiling*, etc. like they couldn't have a serious conversation! even when they *tried* being serious or brought up serious/sad topics or fought(!!), their convos still went like this:
*𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴/𝘴𝘢𝘥 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩* - 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘔𝘊1 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨.
like, my dudes you don't have to be cheerfully happy 24/7, it's ok to *feel* all your emotions. ugh, it was driving me crazy..
i really wish i could've vibed with this story much more, truly, as it had potential..

Coral Prince Conundrum by CD Rachels is book 1 of the Runaway Prince Hotel collab series, where magical royals find love over a cup of coffee, and if I was Daryl? I’d forget all of my barista skills and would probably burn the milk while trying to remember how to make a fancy latte for Seero because that man was fiiiiiiiine (Daryl was fine too, they both are fine🤭).

🩵Fake Engagement & HEA

Daryl is working as a barista near the Renversé Hotel to help pay for grad school so he can make a name for himself doing what he loves, and get out of his dad’s shadow. When the handsome dude he’s been crushing on starts coming into the coffee shop, barista perks include flirting while making said hunk’s drinks.

Handsome hottie Seero? Well, it turns out he’s not just the guy working at the hotel pool…he’s royalty – the heir to the Coral Kingdom throne and he can control water and marine wildlife. It’s a no-brainer to keep Seero’s secret, and Daryl is studying marine biology, so he wants to save the oceans too. The only problem? The Coral Kingdom wants to cause a war in the seas due to mistreatment of the oceans via pollution and overfishing (is this a bad time to mention that Daryl’s dad might be responsible for perpetuating some of those horrible fishing practices?).

Now? These two need to try and save humanity from an aquatic war by working together. And when Seero’s father, the King, finds out about Daryl’s association with Seero? Well…commence the fake engagement for Daryl’s protection (it’s a no-no to touch a royal and let’s just say the guys were…familiar with one another at this point🤭).

Trying not to develop real feelings for the sexy aquatic prince feels like a losing battle, and with enemies all around, Daryl’s heart isn’t the only thing at risk. Will Daryl and Seero be able to do the impossible and stop a war from brewing? And will their hearts stay intact while dealing with this conundrum?

Was I all for this relationship?! Yes! I binged this story in a little over 24 hours! Is Daryl my spirit animal? Basically. I mean, was I a barista while in grad school? Absolutely. Do I wish I could communicate with marine wildlife? Duh. Would I be tongue-tied and say awkward things while trying to flirt with a hottie like Seero? Also, yes.

Seero, being a royal, has been surrounded by people who haven’t truly seen him and have wanted to associate with him based on what he could do to elevate their status. Enter: Daryl, who knows nothing about Seero and wants to be with Seero because of the connection they’re forging. Secrets about true identities don’t stay secret for long, and these two can’t fight the pull to one another and it’s adorable and sweet and gives you the warm and fuzzies – but don’t let that fool you because these two tumble in the sheets and the spice is CHEF’S KISS! I can’t give a ton about the conflict to save humanity because I don’t believe in spoilers, BUT know that the pets in this story are literal angels and true MVPs! I now need a pet pelican, sort-of jellyfish, and sea dragon.

If you’re looking for a cute romantasy read with low angst and a guaranteed HEA, this is it!!

Daryl is working his way through grad school in Marine Biology working as a barista in the Café Magnifique, across the street from the Renversé Hotel. He father could certainly put himself through school as the owner of Tishman Fisheries empire, but Daryl is having nothing to do with a company destroying the ocean’s fish and marine life population with unsustainable practices. Layla, the owner of both the hotel and the café offer’s a safe place for Daryl to sustain the moral high ground.
Layla, well aware of the existence of the supernatural, is the owner of Renversé and the café and shows no real surprise when a Prince of the Coral Kingdom shows up requesting a room to “runaway”. She puts Seero to work teaching water aerobics and keeps his secret. But she sends him to the café “across the street” to relax and meet the staff. When Seero and Daryl start spending time together bonding over ocean conservation all is well until Seero finds out Daryl is a Tishman, one of the biggest offenders Seero is fighting against.
This a another take on a Merman’s tale, Seero having no second form – only gills to breathe underwater. It is also book 1, part of the Runaway Prince Hotel bundle, a MM urban fantasy series. These are all standalones but characters carry over between books.

To help pay for graduate school, Daryl Tishman works as a barista in a café near Renversé Hotel. He enjoys flirting with the amazingly hot guy who works in the pool area of the hotel. What he doesn’t know is that hot guy is actually a Prince of the Coral Court, Seero. The two embark on something more until Seero learns that Daryl’s family owns a fishing fleet that is destructive to the ocean and its inhabitants. Daryl has to work hard to convince him that he is studying ways to help the ocean. They are on the same side. His kingdom wants to create a type of law which will create a war while trying to save the ocean. Part of doing that Seero needs Daryl to pose as his fiancé.

Coral Prince Conundrum was such an amazing book. It had suspense and danger but also a lot of humor. The adoption of certain phrases into the vocabulary made for more than a few chuckles. The two men were meant to be together, provided they could survive court intrigue. It will capture you on page one and keep you until the last page. This is a part of a series of books set in Renversé Hotel, which is also known as The Runaway Prince Hotel. The series promises to be a lot of fun.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5 rounded to 4)

This was a cute, swoony read with a fun mix of fantasy, romance, and a touch of campy adventure. A coffee-loving grad student + a water-controlling ocean prince? Yes, please. I loved the creativity of the setting, the magical elements (the pet pelican and dragon ride were delightful touches!), and the chemistry between the MCs. It definitely leans into that “light fantasy with romance at the core” feel, which made it easy to fly through.

That said, I did notice some editing issues and a few inconsistencies in the storytelling that pulled me out here and there. The plot has a lot of potential, though, and with a little tightening up it could shine even brighter.

If you enjoy urban fantasy romances with princes, pretend fiancé tropes, and a guaranteed HEA, this is a fun start to the Runaway Prince Hotel series. I think many readers will really enjoy it, especially if you’re looking for something light, playful, and imaginative.

Content Warnings:

Fantasy violence and battle scenes

Threats of war and oceanic destruction

Kidnapping attempts / danger to MCs

Mild injury and peril

Exciting and dangerous! Prince Seero Dagat, has a Mission from his Father, survey the land and prepare to destroy humanity. He, is less bloodthirsty and wants to get to know humans before destroying them. He starts on his own Mission of finding the good in humans. Daryl, is working as a barista to pay his way through grad school. He's studying marine biology with a passion for sea life conservation. Ironic, since his Father's business catches tuna with total disregard of any conservation. Their budding relationships reaches a snag when Seero realizes who Daryl's Dad is. Then life gets complicated as they work on priorities, values and principles. There is surprise, dilemmas, conflicts, commitment, danger, betrayal and acceptance. Seero, goes against tradition, prejudice and ignorance.Delightful supporting characters. Is the right thing always the good thing? Great story, Interesting sea characters. Nicely done. kelp leather seat, 'so not cowabunga', star- & jellyfish bouquet, water benders, medevac, 'very cowabunga'

The beginning is meh and a bit sluggish. **BUT** if you keep reading, the story evolves and becomes fascinating and very intriguing. I promise! You'll thank yourself for sticking with it.

Seero, the Coral Prince, with his abilities is just like the original comic book 'Aqua-man'. He is incognito, trying to pass himself as a normal human who works at the Renversé Hotel. Daryl Tishman is a master's degree student in marine biology/conservation and a P/T barista for Café Magnifique next door.

The world-building is phenomenal and so imaginative. The imagery is spectacularly painted. Except the beginning, I enjoyed reading this multi-author collaboration and recommend it.

The first book in the Runaway Prince Hotel brings us a sweet story between the Coral Kingdom heir and a barista who happens to be the son of the man responsible for harming the oceans.

Sparks between Seero and Daryl fly as soon as they meet. But the fact that Daryl’s father is hurting the marine life is a punch to the gut to Seero.

Once he realizes that Daryl wants to protect the ocean as much as he does, and to protect him from his father, Seero comes up with the ruse of being Daryl’s soulmate and fake being engaged.

Of course, the pretend engagement is more real than they want to admit and their feelings for each other are hard to hide. They eventually get their HEA despite the initial obstacles.

Quick and enjoyable read.

This is a fun urban romantasy about a sea prince (merman) and a human barista. It has some drama and danger, a fake engagement, humor, and romance. Seero is the heir to the Coral Kingdom, and Daryl is a barista whose father runs a business that is hurting the sea and marine life. In fact, both MC's fathers are the primary sources of the conflicts between the two worlds (land and sea) in this book. The connection between Seero and Daryl is hot, and once Seeero realizes they are on the same side, he and Daryl work together to save humanity, as their 'fake' engagement starts to feel very real. This is the first book in the Runaway Prince Hotel series, which looks to be an enjoyable new multi-author series.

When Corali Prince Seero is sent on global survey he makes a detour to Renverse hotel in princedelothia, Oregon which doubles as a haven for wayward princes. While there he meets barista Daryl who is studying to be a marine conservationist. This is a cute romance book, that features two MCs who live in different worlds, but have the same mission to keep the ocean and humanity safe. Along with a cute, comedic romance, these two deal with family drama, trying to find a way for their relationship, and danger. This is the first book in the Runaway Prince Hotel multi author series. It also features BIPOC MCs and side characters who are just as interesting as as the MCs

Another CD Rachels masterpiece

CD is a craftsman world builder. He creates worlds, cities and characters with a deft finesse. But none of those are much worthwhile without a great story, as is the case here. Lots of suspense here from precarious and risky relationships to the continuing existence of the world itself. This book is a true joy, brimming with suspense and intrigue, but also with joy, love, hope and beauty.

Well done, CD. As for you folks out there; read this adventure. You’ll love it.

This book was a little different from what I'm used to. The pace of the book is relatively fast while the world-building/plot is a bit slow with medium to low angst.

I enjoyed Daryl's clumsiness and boy, did he give me secondhand embarrassment but in an endearing way.

Seero was quite interesting to get to know. His forwardness and confidence was really striking but his timidness that resurfaces in between was refreshing.

I'm not gonna lie–I was not sure who the top/bottom was until a few chaps in. I mean the book kept me guessing and that was fun.

Read this if you enjoy low angst, funny, unique characters who share a love for the sea and coffee shop shenanigans. There isn't much depth but that lighthearted, warm tone of the book makes up for it.

The Coral Prince (Seero) comes from the Coral Kingdom in the sea, to Oregon, to the "Runaway Prince Hotel" to see how the humans live. There he meets Daryl, the barista. Sparks fly immediately. Unfortunately Daryl is the son of a man who runs one of the biggest fisheries in the area & is doing harm to the ocean. Following are misunderstandings, political intrigue, and a 'fake' engagement. Eventually they get their HEA.

I found this book to be entertaining enough to read in one sitting.

Generally the job of a fake boyfriend/fiancé is to make an ex jealous, protect someone from unwanted advances, etc. not help save the oceans. That is, however, exactly the position Daryl finds himself in when he gets acquainted with Seero who works at the hotel across the street. There's a great message about ocean protection here and two great characters who fall for each other while working for the worthy cause.
