Sebastian Radu is an unusual kid… perhaps the most unusual young man presently living in America. That’s because he’s a one-hundred-twenty-five-year-old warlock who looks all of eighteen.
Born to a Romanian family of witches, whose lifetimes often extend beyond six hundred years, the Radus have long been at war with another family of similar dark gifts, the Mateis. When the Mateis step up their efforts to wipe the Radus from the face of the earth, Sebastian and his family flee Chicago and head south to the quaint and quirky town of Denmark, Tennessee.
Home to pre-Civil War majestic homes, lingering race issues, and the “World’s Largest Frog Leg Fry”, Denmark is the perfect place to hide… provided the Radus can fit in where life moves at a much slower and ‘non-magical’ pace. Residing in an old plantation house known locally as “Twin Magnolias”, the family begins to settle into the community… until their old enemies show up.
Under the threat of war steeped in deadly sorcery, Sebastian and his family are faced with choices that will affect their well being and the town’s survival. Either they resolve their long and bitter dispute with the Mateis witches… or watch the ancient conflict destroy them all.

I have read books by this author before and really like his style usually. The main characters are interesting but could have been a little more well-defined since there are not that many of them. Then when you aid in the bad guys, also intended to be a part of the main characters I suppose but they are more in the ether than anything. The description of the town is a standard small town with people knowing a lot about each other and gossips able to clue in new arrivals about their neighbors.
Sebastian Radu is an unusual kid, that might be because he's a 125-year-old warlock who looks like your typical 18 year old. In a family of Romanian witches who live very lives that go beyond 600 years, the Radus has been at war with the Mateis another family of witches. When the Mateis ramp up their vendetta the Radus flee from Chicago and head down south to Denmark, Tennessee. They hope this will keep their enemies at bay for a while but the best-laid plans.
The Mateis show up in town and are gunning for them and do not care if there is collateral damage as they go for the Radus.
I like this in a broad sense but do find it kind of boring in the same breath. The narrator of the audible book, Diane Davis, did an alright job with them.
This was a fun read about a young warlock and his family. There is lots of humor, an intestinal cast of characters and a good story. I’m would read the next book should one come available. I saw something a few years ago about a second named Witch out of Water but can’t find it.
What if the Montegues and Capulets had had powers? You might end up with characters like these. Two families have feuded for generations after the death of a member of one of the feuding families. Now the younger generation has feelings for one another- and they have to find a way to stop the feud before the families wipe each other out, as the next battle might be the one where only one side walks away.
The characters were strongly developed, the story was loaded with suspense, and a few great laugh out loud moments. If you're looking for the next great read in this genre, give this one a chance. I'm glad I borrowed this one from KU- and I'll be starting the next this evening.
This could be a great story. There are warring witch families, a lovely Southern town, and possibly interesting characters. However, the tale is buried in unnecessary blah-blah and the reading becomes a chore.
Love this book! I want to learn more about the Radu's and the Mati's dealing with the punishments associated with the families fallout with the elders. This story just gets better as the story goes on. Beautifully written by Aiden James, it keeps your imagination going right from the beginning and leaves you saying, I want more!
I really liked this story. It was different than what I normally read. I was looking forward to going onto the next part of the story and find that it is not available. Was left hanging not knowing what happened.
Suspense, romance, mystery, and thrilling would be the words to describe this novel. I really enjoyed my time with Bad and the family . Can't wait to find out what comes next for the family.
I really liked the characters in this book, but I felt like there weren’t any parts of the story that were ever completed and nothing really big ever happened. I will read the next book, but hope it has more climax and solution.
I enjoyed how the long-running feud between the Radus and the Mateis slowly creeps back into what seems like a quiet refuge. Twin Magnolias feels like a character itself, and the stakes grow naturally as magic and history collide with everyday town life.
Sebastian Radu is not like most normal eighteen year olds. Especially since he is a warlock that looks eighteen but is actually one-hundred-twenty-five-years-old.
His family of Romanian warlocks and witches have lifetimes that extend beyond six hundred years. The Radus also have been at war with another family, the Mateis, which have the same kind of gifts. The Mateis have stepped up their efforts to wipe the Radus from the face of the earth which forces the family to flee their home in Chicago to a small town in the south. They find their new home in the quirky and quaint town of Denmark. The homes there are pre-Civil War antebellum that still manages to have some race issues and is also home to the “World’s Largest Frog Leg Fry”.
The Radus find that Denmark is the perfect place to hide where the life is much slower in pace not to mention non-magical. Their new home, an old plantation house is known there as Twin Magnolias. It also allows the family to settle into a life where something new and humorous seems to happen daily. At least until their old enemies, the Mateis show up in their lives yet again.
Sebastian and his family are faced with choices that affect not just their well-being but also the town they are starting to call home, because they are facing the threat of war that is steeped in deadly sorcery. Though they just might also have the first chance to take some steps that will lead to healing the rift. They are either going to have to resolve their long and bitter dispute with the Mateis or the ancient conflict will destroy them all.
While this story is more paranormal there are some romantic elements in it. The characters are intriguing and keep the story moving at a quick pace. The back story build up is done in such a way that it all blend together seamlessly and makes for an action pack book that takes readers on a ride they won’t soon forget. This is the first book and if the other books prove to be as well written this is going to be an amazing series. This does end with a somewhat cliff hanger that will leave reading getting antsy as they wait for the next book. The descriptions in the book really bring this world to life for readers that will have them thinking they are actually there with all the quirky town people that make for a town that would be a lot of fun to actually visit.
This was a really good read. The characters are well developed, as the author slowly reveals their personalities little by little to us as the story is told. We get to know this family, or coven, of witches and warlocks as they move into a new city. The main family of the Radu clan consists of Grandparents Georghe and Florin, Mom and Dad Silvia and Gabriel, son Sebastian (Bas), and daughter Alisia. This magical clan lives for over 600 years but age very slowly. Bas is over 100 years old but looks like he is in his late teens, and Alisia is a bit younger and looks in her mid teens- so even though they might be hundreds of years old, its they act just like any other family of grandparents, parents and teenagers. Bas is the main character and he narrates this story, keeping a daily journal of their days in their new hometown.
While working on their new home and getting to know the eccentric neighbors, the family slowly falls in love with their new surroundings. Unfortunately, their mortal enemies, another family of wizards and wizards, has tracked them down and wants to wipe them off the face of the earth. Will the Radus be able to stay in the town they love or will they have to run away once again from the warring wizards? And while all this is going on, Bas thinks he has found love- will he be able to hold onto the girl of his dreams or will he be torn away from her while his family is at wizard war?
This story is a wonderful beginning to a series I hope continues. I would love to find out what happens next in these wizards' and warlocks' lives. There is a bit of swearing but nothing too bad, so this book is a good read for any age. It has some fun magic fights involving shooting wands and spells, a tiny bit of romance, and a mix of comedy. Reading this book is a great way to spend an afternoon, and hopefully the next in the series will be available soon.
I absolutely LOVED this book! When I first read the name of the new series by the multi-talented story teller Aiden James…I thought it would be just an average witches and warlock…cauldrons and spells…people being turned into frogs type of story. But…no…this story is far from your typical witch tale and is so much better for it! The story is told by Sebastian Radu in a journal type writing. Sebastian, whose friends and family call him Bas, is a one hundred and twenty five year old Warlock who appears to be the age of a normal eighteen year old. Bas is one of the many characters you will meet in this wondrous story. Each and every one of the characters is intricately woven together as Sebastian and his family move from the Chicagoland area to a small town in Tennessee to escape a bloody war that was started many…many years before. The family has to abide by “the code” that was decreed by the Elders in their homeland of Romania, which means that they must live like normal human beings and not use witchcraft or at least not be observed using it. What ensues in the story after they relocate is an entertaining…fun…action packed at times story that will keep you reading until the very end and wanting more. I have read many of Mr. James’ books and I have to say…Welcome To Denmark is by far my most favorite so far. The detailed descriptions of the town…the homes…the captivating characters is like watching a movie in your mind! Aiden James has written an engrossing tale with his magical writing skills that will leave you wanting more! I can’t wait for the next installment of this series which I’m sure will be filled with more of the magic that was found in this first book! Thank you Mr. James for weaving your magic into this fantastic story!
This isn't usually my cup of tea either, but so far, all of this author's books I've read, I've enjoyed, even though none of them are the type I usually read. These books just grip you from the beginning and you have to finish to see how things turn out. I read the first portion of this book as an excerpt in another and couldn't wait to find this one so I could finish it. That's the type of author we're dealing with here. You get one or two chapters and you're almost definitely hooked. This book starts with Sebastian and his family moving from Chicago to a little no-name town in Tennessee...well, of course it has a name, but no one Sebastian knew had ever heard of it except his grandfather, and now they were moving there. There was a good reason they were moving, but it's not your typical reason. It wasn't a job transfer, to be closer to other family members or anything like that. These people are witches and warlocks and they're in the middle of a generations-old feud with another family of their kind. They move to Denmark, Tennessee to try to escape the feuding and think they've done it at first, but their relief and peace of mind is short-lived. There were parts of this book that had me holding my breath, wondering who would come out on top, and there were the parts that had me laughing out loud, like the time Sebastian's grandfather let loose on an unsuspecting hired handyman who wasn't so handy. It was great. There's obviously magic here, or we wouldn't be dealing with witches and warlocks, but we've also got suspense and romance. There's a little bit for everyone in here I think...even people like me who don't read fantasy but I have been dabbling a bit in it it seems.
' I received a complimentary copy of this book by the Author in exchange for an honest review '
My Rating: 4 Hearts
Sebastian is a warlock from a family filled with Witches and Warlocks. They used to be best friends with the Mateis family until a terrible tragedy struck and the Mateis family declared war on the Radu family. Now Bas my look about 18 but in reality he is about 125. He is very upset that his family has to up and move because the Mateis family decided to attack. The Radu's are always on the defence. So if they have to run to survive, they will.
While exploring their new town Bas and his sister run into a beautiful girl. There is something about her. Bas is instantly drawn to her and he can't figure out why. Bass has a lot more to worry about then who some mystery girl is. When the Mateis family finds them with they continue to run or will they fight back?
My Opinion: Looks like the start to another great series! I enjoyed this book. It was well written and filled with great characters. Sebastian's Grandfather was hilarious. The book almost seems to have a Romeo and Juliet feel only a lot more interesting. was written as if each chapter were the beginning of a journal entry. Aiden sucks you into a world of magic, with a family just trying to live, with another Bent on having revenge. Of a variety of emotions including humor, love, hate, awe, pain and determination. I definitely recommend reading!
Welcome to Denmark" By Aiden James, I am totally "Enchanted" by anything Magical! And Aiden James writes a story of Magic In Denmark Tennessee. A story of Warlocks and Witches in America Living among us, Imagine Being 125 yrs old... BUT You are 18..Look like you are 18 and have the emotions and restrictions of an 18 yr old, and you are a Warlock in an entire family of Magical people, This is Sebastian Radu's life! He's Furious when his family has to leave Chicago where he and his family are threatened by a rival family of Witches and Warlocks The Mateis, a feud that has spanned 100's of years and has come to a full on war . So when Sebastian and his family head south to begin a new non magical life in Denmark Tennessee, to try and ward off this fight. The family finds themselves in an old plantation style home where they begin to try and "fit in" and make friends , When the Mateis FIND them.. what happens when sorcery, old wounds and a sprinkle of a new young forbidden love enters the picture? All Magical hell breaks loose!! Aiden James Paints a wonderful, magical, and sometimes funny story. His descriptions of the plantation home and the very ,VERY fun and interesting neighbors that make up this town that Sebastian eventually LOVES are so real you can feel the dew on the trees.. Mr. James even slips some ghostly activity into this story! I HIGHLY Recommend "Welcome to Denmark" and give it 5 magic wands ! You have Enchanted me Aiden James!
I'm not just a fan of Aiden James and his books, but I am a fan of how Aiden James interacts with his fans on Facebook. He's down to earth, answers your questions, is engaging, and his posts are informative and witty! Can you tell I'm a fan?
Aiden's new book is spectacular! The plot is mesmerizing and the characters are charming. It's also refreshing to read a book that didn't have any grammatical errors, unlike this review.
The Radu family is forced to relocate from Chicago to the small town of Denmark, Tennessee. What may look like an ordinary family, is a supernatural family that hails from Romania of warlocks and witches. Because of their ancient lineage, they don't age as quickly as normal people do. The family hopes that moving to a small southern town will keep a centuries old vendetta with the Mateis family from following them.
Trying to keep their family together, out of harm's way, keeping in line with "the code", and fitting in to their new home, proves harder than what they thought.
I don't what to give anything away and spoil it for you! The story is chock-full of crazy high jinks committed by a young-at-heart grandpa, kindhearted neighbors, and longtime rivalries, that it will keep you reading!
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series! If after reading the book you want to ask questions, check out Aiden's fan page on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/21206...
I would like to start out by saying I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
Another delightful story of enchantment by Aiden James. Sebastian Radu tells the story through his journal. Although he appears to be 18, he is really 125 yrs old. After all, he is a Warlock whose natural life span is 600 years. He lives with his Parents, Grandparents, and sister. The Radu family flees from Chicago to Denmark TN to escape a deadly feud with the Mateis family that has been going on for centuries. The peace they find in Denmark is short lived when they find out the Mateis have followed them and plan to destroy the whole family. In the midst of the feud Sebastian falls in love with a girl who turns out to be a Mateis. What follows next is a magical story of love, hate, magic, family and laughter. As usual, Aiden's stories are full of history mixed with fantasy. His colorful way of storytelling makes me feel like I am not just reading but that I am actually there. A great start to what I am hoping is a series. This story can be enjoyed by young and old.
This book begins with the Radu family packing up and leaving Chicago for Denmark, TN, in order to avoid being wiped out by their mortal enemies, the Mateis. Denmark may seem like a random place for relocation, except an ancient talisman that is needed for the safety of the Radu clan, seems to be hidden there. Everyone is adjusting to their new life, until the Mateis family also shows up in Denmark. That kicks things up to a whole new level. This story is such a fun read, with quirky characters and a fast-paced storyline that makes it hard to put this book down. The changes to this new version make for a tight, fun read that flows better than the original. At times in the original story, I wasn't very fond of Sebastian, but the updates to the story, and specifically his character, make me like him more. I look forward to seeing what future stories Aiden James brings us from this universe
What an entertaining read! Aiden James sucks you into the deep south. His clear writing makes you feel as if you were standing on the lawn of the big southern mansion! There are a great cast of characters...and some of them are real "characters"! I caught myself actually chuckling out loud at certain antics of these. I got so immersed in the book that all of a sudden I hit the page that said "The End" and was dumbfounded...I wanted more! This is a fun start to what I feel is going to be a GREAT series. I can't wait until the next book comes out. Thank you Aiden James for keeping us entertained!
Audio book review: I just finished the audiobook version of this story, and it was excellent! The narrator did a great job of bringing the story to life and I think I enjoyed listening to it even more than reading it!
Original review from November 14, 2014: I absolutely loved this book! I don't know why I should find this surprising, as I love every book that Aiden James writes. I wasn't sure I would like this one because it didn't seem like it would be as intense as some of his other stories, but I shouldn't have worried. It was a great story with entertaining characters and I am anxious to see what happens in the next book :-)
Since this book describes places I call home, the story is both nostalgic and compelling. For me, Oz is a place in West Tennessee, just down the yellow brick road. Bring on Book Two.
