In 2399 the remnants of humanity hurtle through space in search of a new home. At the center of their ship is a massive city built to mimic their lost civilization on Earth.

Among the nearly 100,000 inhabitants, Sophia, one of the helper alternates, has been assigned to nurse one of the City policemen back to health after a brutal attack. Crippled in both mind and body, Anlon struggles each day to return to his former self. But he is addicted to both his painkillers and Sophia's touch. For her part, though alternates cannot feel such things, Sophia believes she loves him.

When Anlon finally returns to work, a murder investigation draws him into a doomsday plot. There are those who have grown despondent at life within the ship, now worn down after a near century since leaving Earth. A biological agent will spur violence and madness just as a new planet is finally discovered, and the ship slows to drop into orbit.

In the end, the humans and alternates must each face difficult choices, just as Sophia must decide if her love is real, or if she can instead have a freedom she never knew was possible.
