The boys continue to be boys. Which is their blessing and their curse, really. Keiichi’s nursing a new crush that might be too much, even for him. But it’s going to be a whole new problem when he draws the eye of Tomoya’s little sister.
Half the usual standard, half awkward, fully a step back from the last volume’s work. The camaraderie of these four as friends is so much better than we usually see, getting the balance of sentiment and snark pretty dead on, but it never quite manages to stay aloft with any consistency in its other aspects.
I’m trying not to harumph too much about Keiichi’s kink, even though I do every single volume, but it’s just one of those things that irks me being played for laughs the way it is. So naturally the initial chapters are about him being knocked for a loop by the school nurse.
I don’t mind the unreality of most manga, but this one stretches what was a fairly reasonable high school comedy so far into the weeds of hyper-reality that it snaps a little. About the funniest moment was finding out that Keiichi’s older brother, despite being a teacher, is as bad as him, but his choice of weapon is slightly different.
Otherwise you have yet more depictions of unhealthy bdsm and an age gap romance that is five seconds from crossing a real line that most stories fear to tread. It’s an utter dead end of a section for me, but I admit that I was crank while reading it.
Despite all that, Keiichi’s earnest nature being in contrast to his bdsm side has been pretty amusing, plus this all leads into Tomoya’s sister, Nozomi, realizing that Keiichi and Tomoya know one another. And she is dead set on thanking him for what he did at the beach. Definitely nothing else.
Tomoya imploding most of this volume is a lot of the best jokes and distracts from a takoyaki and cream puff arc that is a bit of a lark, but mostly fails to be terribly amusing because it trades on some incredibly stale comedy.
All this friction eventually culminates in an amusement park visit that goes in some pretty expected directions, but is still fun because the entire cast is there. Tsuyupon and his girlfriend have the most wonderfully comfy relationship in the series.
Unless something foundation-shaking happens, the boys and girls are clearly pairing off exactly how you’d expect. Keiichi is introducing Nozomi to the idea that things that are scary can be fun, which is a pretty direct line as far as this story is concerned (just… please address consent…).
Mari and Anna both get in over their heads and I do think Mari’s major problem is not only how she’s written, but the style of her speech balloons, of all things, makes her seem like she screeches every line of dialogue.
Naturally Tomoya comes to her rescue, leaving Natsuki to save Anna from the clutches of a couple of dudes who are perilously close to a sexual assault trigger warning. Which leads to a cliffhanger, of sorts.
I guess my fundamental problem hasn’t changed - this series is woefully uneven. Woefully. For everything I love, like some of the relationships, the gags, certain characters, etc, there’s a bunch of stuff that doesn’t work.
And this volume really doubles down on that at the start, not truly coming to life until the girls get involved. I really like Nozomi, honestly, she brings out Tomoya’s protective brother complex and her affection for Keiichi is genuine enough that I am hoping their interactions work out. I’d love for this to hit a stride and not wonder what I get whenever I start a new volume though.
3 stars - I never know how I’ll feel about any given volume of this series, which certainly makes it an interesting read. Hints of greatness abound, but it lacks any consistency from one chapter to another.
I love that Keiichi got more story in this book. He is my fav chara. Laid back, cheerful and comfortable being himself ✨✨ I also love Yukirin and Tsuypponnu's love story 😍✨
I love this series! Adding Matsun’s sister to the friend group will definitely be interesting…
Also - One star taken off for the whole nurse and Keiichi situation. Shouldn’t she not be an option because idk, HE IS A TEENAGE BOY??! Everyone was encouraging him to pursue her and she was even tempted herself. Blehhh. Adults shouldn’t date children. Also, this school must love hiring sadists LOL
They are all so funny! Keiichi has a new crush but that crush might not be a good match for him, we see that Matsunaga’s sister is the girl Keiichi helped at the beach, and she has a crush on him. Natsuki helps Anna get away from the creepy guy, and now they might be in the Ferris with the great shape. I love Tsuyoshi’s and Yukirin’s relationship, they continue to be the cutest.
The story of the nurse Keichi liked was the only thing out of the anime with some other minor changes. I loved how gradually Natsuki and Anna building their relationship, but somehow it feels no one else is having a real development.
This volume was pretty good even though it had a trope I don't tend to care for. It didn't bother me too much. I still like these characters and their wacky adventures.
Still a really cute slice of life, but given some of the jokes, I can see why it hasn't been licensed in the US yet, but I'm still crossing my fingers.
