Losing the twenty-first century was bad enough, but Martha Bigalow's situation is about to become a whole lot worse.
Only days after her marriage to Vadim—a handsome outlaw stalked by grim shadows of the past—Martha is captured by his arch nemesis, the evil Earl of Edgeway.
While awaiting her fate in a dank dungeon beneath Edgeway's castle, Vadim’s twisted foster brother— Anselm—offers her a way out, an alternative to a tortuous and painful death.
Forced into a life of deceit, Martha discovers friendship where she least expects to find it, even within the stronghold of the enemy, and by the time war descends on Edgeway, the boundary between black and white—between friend and foe—is less distinct.
As the castle braces itself for a bitter siege, Martha's loyalty is divided, her love for Vadim tested to its limit... and may prove to be yet another casualty of war.
N.J. Layouni has been weaving stories all of her life—even before she could actually write. For many years, she was a dedicated 'closet writer'. As a result, the attic space of her home is stuffed to the rafters with piles of aging manuscripts depicting fantastical romantic adventures. Tales of daring sword-wielding heroes and strong, feisty damsels who aren't too tough to accept a helping hand sometimes.
As well as being a mouthpiece for the various characters living inside her head, N.J. is a wife, and mother of two children. She lives in Lancashire, UK.
What can I say, just love this series. This was a fabulous book from beginning to the end. The hero and heroine were great as well as every other character and a great plot too. There were moments of laughing out loud, of excitement, tenderness and love. I can't wait for another one from this author. Well recommended.
I was hoping to see an improvement from the first book to this one but sadly that wasn’t the case. I did still enjoy the story for the most part and still think it had potential but I still found something lacking. It could have been so much more if it had just been fleshed out a bit more! I did very much enjoy that there was a lot of action and the characters are great but I still found myself wanting more!
NJ Layouni has done it again in this perfect continuation of Martha's story. (You must read Book one, Hemlock, first, because it is AMAZING, because book two always makes more sense after you've read book one!)
Our modern-day heroine Martha has mastered the art of fitting into her medieval world - almost. She still can't help speaking her mind to anyone, from a king all the way down to a servant, and she still relentlessly sticks up for the underdog. I love that about her! Martha is like the girl in school who ALWAYS has the snappy comeback that you wish you had, but even though you didn't think of it first, you're cheering anyway because she's putting a meanie in their place. NJ makes Martha's lines funny as she peppers them with modern slang that makes everyone around her go "huh?"
In this book, NJ ups her sensory game in a big way (not that she didn't do it well before). You will feel every gust of wind, see every drop of sweat on a tired horse, smell every delicious aroma from the kitchen, and feel the cold glass of a windowpane under your fingertips. She completely transports you to her world of Erde!
Vadim is back (wooo-hooo!) in all his yummy outlaw glory. His foster brother Anselm is a confused, tortured "hero" (he's supposed to be a bad guy, but I couldn't hate him. I felt like all he really needed was a good therapist!) And that's another plus for this book, that the character development is so good that you root for the reform of one would-be villain.
The ending is beautiful, but I won't give anything away. Let's just say that the old story of "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry comes to mind. Only this ending isn't about gifts, but about how much the main characters are willing to do to ensure each other's happiness. Martha is secure in the knowledge that she is EXACTLY where she belongs, at Vadim's side and in the world of Erde.
The story is great, an absolute 5+ ! N. J. Layouni, what can I say. If she gets a good editor she is going to be an author with whom to be reckoned.
There are so many other reviews that tell you of the story and the characters that anything I could say would be redundant.
Ignore the English slang (well, look it up so you know what it means) and don't let it bug you. The same goes for the misspelled words. Concentrate on the story, you'll be glad you did.
If you are a fan of the Outlander series, you will definitely enjoy this series.
“Whatever happens, trust in this: I will find her again. Come what may, I will bring Martha back.”
This one was… it was a roller coaster, simply put. It was a slow ride up and up and up – it may have felt like that because of me wanting Vadim to rescue Martha already – and then it went down. Fast and hard.
I hated Anselm for what he did – and he does plenty. He’s the bad guy, the anti-hero in the story. At the beginning and maybe until the half of the story, then he does a one-eighty like you couldn’t believe – I know I didn’t, it took me a little to believe, I was skeptical – and then goes and makes you like him. Yes, that’s right. I went from hating him to liking him.
Fair warning, this one is not all sunshine and unicorns and rainbows – not that the first one was, mind you but this one is darker. Why? Well, you'll see. Poor Martha, I sympathized with her.
Martha. I liked her in the first one, liked her here, as well. She stood up to Anselm and the Evil Earl and she never gave up hope of getting out of there, whether it was by her hand or Vadim’s. There was a scene that made me want to shake some senses into her and let me tell you, what comes after that ruined my manicure. It’s angst-filled and I kept thinking ‘oh no’ and ‘oh, come on!’ etc etc. I was waiting with bated breath for damn Vadim to make an appearance, already. I was kinda pissed at him for not charging in and saving the day. But then I realized, that couldn’t happen. Well, it could but in another story, one more fairytale-ish but not Wolfsbane.
How he makes an appearance, well, let’s just say I didn’t quite get why that scene had to be written but I guess Vadim just had to save Martha from something.
“Her name was forever branded on his heart. He would not be without her again.”
After that, all my previous anger for Vadim went poof and I was reminded why I had fallen for him, in the first place. Yes, he’s a jealous dummy – you’ll see why – and makes you want to smack him upside the head because it’s pretty duh how things stood but eh. Men.
All in all, I feel there’s more to come. I feel it’s not yet resolved. I foresee more ruined manicures in my distant future. I mean, it really can’t end that way! Even if it’s a novella, there still has to be more. I want more Vadim. So, I read it in one sitting – granted, I took some short breaks from it, or else bye-bye kindle – and I give it 4 1/2 stars. I highly recommend it. It just sucks you in from the very beginning.

OK. Don't know if I'd continue if there were more books in the series. The main character, Martha, seems far too predictable and actions that would normally get her killed or maimed, on the spot, don't seem to have any real consequences. Plus, exactly how many times would you take off on foot, alone no less, (because you were mad) which puts yourself and others in mortal danger before you maybe learned a lesson (or five)??? You're supposed to be a grown woman, not an impudent child. Also, she gives no reason for any man to fall madly in love with her, yet "they" do. I guess being ungrateful, unkind, and rude, more often than you're not, is endearing to men??? What gives?? Yes, she shows some kindness to those she doesn't even know, but this does not make up for her behavior elsewhere. Not for me anyway. I'm disappointed. I wanted to like this one better than I did the first one. Guess I should have quit while I was ahead.
She never fails to blow me away. Talk about on the edge of your seat biting your nails to the quick. I've said it before and I'll say it again. NJ is an amazingly talented author. Genius writing!! Martha, oh that woman cracks me up! But you can't let her strength and cougar go either. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it ended, I really may not be okay if this is the end!!
Not a huge writer on reviews, straight to the point. I really liked the follow up. More depth, love the new characters introduced. Would read the next one. If you like time travel genre, romance, adventure you will enjoy this book.
"Wolfsbane" the second book in "Tales of a Time Traveler" opens as Martha Bigelow, confined to Anselm's living quarters in the Earl of Edgeway's castle struggles to overcome her fear and uncertainty as war approaches. After weeks of being threatened by the evil Earl and forced to play a duplicitous game she begins not only to doubt Vadim's love but to gravitate towards Anselm who she realizes has more redeeming qualities than she initially thought. When Castle Edgeway is besieged Martha finds her loyalties suddenly divided and her love for Vadim tested.
The plot thickens as Martha not only contends with the Earl's fury and Anselm's confusing temperament, but struggles to find a way to break free of her prison. By the time war arrives at the front gates the line between friend and foe has deteriorated with Anselm's consideration and protection while Martha's irritation and anger with the man she loves has grown. Slowly the author builds emotional intensity as Martha has to make choices; whether or not to stay in this medieval period ; to trust her instincts about Anselm; and to have faith in her love for Vadim.
The story heats up when King Erik's plan to stay at Edgeway Castle for an indeterminate period is countered in an explosive confrontation between his warriors and the Earl of Weyland's army. Suspense, excitement and action escalate as danger, fear and violence suffuses the atmosphere. The story is a roller-coaster ride that doesn't slow down as the conflict mounts not only between the armies , but with the vengeance of enemies. Yet for all the violence, cruelty, anguish and death that's often diluted by witty banter and humorous incidents there are strong elements of forgiveness, healing and redemption in a story that flows quickly and smoothly to an intriguing conclusion.
The author brings unforgettable characters to life whose passion and complexity add strength and depth to this riveting tale. Martha a modern- day woman is still smart-mouthed, frank and spirited. Even faced with death and torture she impulsively lets anger rule her common sense. Vadim an outlaw ,warrior and soldier fights the darkness of battle sickness, often vocalizing sentiments he normally wouldn't, and then collapsing under its stress. Haunted by tragedy and the loss of his father's title and estate, he continues to be brave, loyal and honorable as he struggles to keep his promises. Martha and Vadim's trust and love is tested by their forced separation, by her friendship with Anselm and with a difficult decision.
"Wolfsbane" is an exciting, time travel tale that's captivating from the first page to the last. I enjoyed it and will look for more novels by N.J. Layouni.
Wolfsbane: Tales of a Traveler (Time Travel #2) By: NJ Layouni 5/5 stars
This book picks up with Vadim’s POV and when he goes to Darumvale looking for Martha, the villagers are shocked because they all believed him to be dead. He learns of what happened in when Martha showed up and had words with the evil earl & Vadim’s foster brother Anselm, the earl striking her in the face & Anselm stepping in between them & taking Martha back to the castle of Edgeway with him.
We also get Martha’s POV from her time spent as a prisoner/forced guest of the castle and how she had to deal with the evil earl, Anselm wanting her, and with the reality of her new everyday life while trying to lie and act convincingly enough about her husband Vadim being dead. She knows that Vadim will come for her, but she doesn’t know when, except that it will most likely be when Rodmar, the rightful heir to the throne, and his army are on their way to war at the castle, to take back the throne & restore the loyal nobles. But as time progresses and she has to continue on with the charade at the castle, including an impending forced marriage by decree of the evil earl, her belief & love for Vadim wanes. Vadim doesn’t like waiting around, but he knows that it’s what is best all around, not only for the good of the cause, but because there is really only one shot to save her & that is during the battle, when everyone else is occupied.
But even the best laid plans don’t always work out...sometimes the plan is wrong & sometimes it’s because the people don’t follow it exactly, & you just want to smack them!! So there has to be some improvising which leads to more dangerous and perilous situations. You can definitely see Martha’s 21st century life coming into play, even if it is to her own detriment. The battle was very well written and was mainly all from Martha’s POV, so I wish that some of it was from Vadim’s, but it was well done. The author does a good job describing the weaponry of that era & the sounds, the feeling of the castle when it was hit by one of the trebuchets.
I was shocked, I actually got to the point that I liked Anselm and not in that he was a twisted dark knight type of way, but in that he actually showed his humanity. There were several other characters that I came to love, Fergus & Effie, Agatha & Edric, and some that I wasn’t totally sure about yet.
This doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, but there is a possibility of what happens next. I really hope that the author does write another book in this series, I want to see where Vadim & Martha go from here & the other characters too!!
Thanks to Hemlock (book 1) I dived right into this at 1 am and didn't sleep till my eyes almost give up.
I love it!!!!
Hooked in right away since the story pick up from where it left. This is more suspense than book 1. I feel like watching Troy and lord of the ring combined.
We get to see more of Anselm in this book and glimpse of what he used to be before power and greed took over him. Most of her book are focusing on Martha and her ordeal I was missing Vadim's presence and involvement in the story. As much as it's nice to see how things turn up, I felt like he missed out from the story and in result gave more room for us to know Anselm. I was hoping to see more of Vadim and Martha together but they hardly have time together even after everything.
What I really enjoy is seeing how the story progress to intense climax. It's hard to be certain on how it end and so you're constantly in suspense and excitement. Despite being villain, the author shed a lot of light on their redeeming quality, their background and their reasons that makes us feel for them.
Love, moral, consequences, trust, forgiveness, courage and integrity.. It's all there. Feeling and emotion that makes you see those qualities within the story. (I'm not even sure I make any sense trying to describe how I feel..gee)
Just wishing there's more to the ending than how it ended. Lots of loose end that I prefer to be wrap up nicely. With Vadim on top preferable. ;)
Ok this book is another ·:*¨¨*:·.*Super*6*Stars*.·:*¨¨*:·. I thought it wouldn't live up to book one but omg it did, the exciting journey she goes through trying to survive the evil earl and Anselm was he using her or truly having a friendship in the end it was lovely......still what happens to him dose he die I truly hope not but then he'll have to face execution:-(
Vadim with his regrets there is nothing you don't miss from there emotions, the smells, there food, the environment ,weather it be the funny or highly emotionally sad.
I was one minute hating Anselm to loving him the next, I was going from wiping loose tears on minute to laughing out loudly the next ,
I could feel how scared Martha was at times and thought this is it I just can't but then something will happen and a sigh of relief but Martha dose have an ability to get into situations where she feels something must be said or done, I really want Anselm ,agatha,Fergus to have a hea too but have to wait and see ...
this book and author is amazing she has to be one of my top authors as I feel like I'am there in the books literally looking around the corner Martha and Vadim there hot together can't wait for more .......shit stick friggin genius hahaha x
An absolutely fun, well-written and though provoking sequel to Hemlock.
N.J. Layouni does not take the easy way out and make Martha a one-dimensional "feisty" heroine. She puts Martha through some very human struggles, and we watch her wrestle with her trust in Vadim. She wavers and slips sometimes, and she is open to Anselm in ways other people are not. All this made me reflect on the title and how far Martha has traveled from where she began.
And Vadim... He was wonderful. N.J. Layouni has created a character who makes choices just as confusing, frustrating and mysterious as any man I know today. He is not a typical hero in this book, which I appreciated. I do want to see more of him, but the amount of time we spend with him in this book was perfectly crafted by the author.
To her great credit, she deftly handled a long battle scene, evoking the chaotic atmosphere of a castle under siege, yet creating several human-sized vignettes within it. The only remaining question is Anselm. I'm unclear about how his story resolved, and I'm wondering if he has some life in him yet, for another story.
This story picks up right where book 1 leaves off. Martha is in the clutches of the Evil Earl and Anselm. Vadim comes to learn that she has been taken and vows to get her back, no matter the cost.
Martha, of course, doesn't like her new home. She's a spitfire towards the Earl and Anselm, but quickly learns she might be better off treating Anselm with at least decency. She finds a few allies at the castle, and learns that Vadim is coming for her, although it's seeming to take quite a while.
The rightful king and his troops arrive to storm the castle, after learning the imposter king will be staying there for a short while. Martha continues to be her sassy self. As the was begins and battles are waged, assistance comes from the unlikeliest places.
When Vadim finally reaches Martha, she is relieved, but at the same time upset that it took him so long. He misunderstands some information, but is set straight soon enough. I have to say.....I'm left wanting more....and hopefully we'll get another trip to see Vadim, Martha and the rest of the gang, too.
It's been awhile since I've reviewed a book but.... Wow, what an amazing follow up to the first book Hemlock! I lost some much needed sleep so that I could read just "one more chapter"! NJ Layouni did an amazing job building up the story and ensuring that it wasn't painfully drawn out. So many questions were answered and even more were formed (hopefully we can count on a third book coming out). I love the fact that Martha remained true to her character- she didn't cower and simper- standing up for herself and others AND still putting people in their place. In my opinion the book was well balanced and had a marvelous flow (I never found myself confused to which POV I was reading, thank you for that). If you haven't read the first book yet, it's a must...and if you're hesitant about Wolfsbane, sample a couple chapters! You will definitely be ensnared by this story. This author has nothing to fear, I look forward to many more tales from her mind!
After reading book #1 Hemlock which was fantastic I had high expectations for Wolfsbane (the price of success hey!) - but I was not disappointed. In fact in this book NJ Layouni takes her writing to another level entirely; the whole side-plot of Martha's imprisonment intrigues, twists and turns at every corner. The characters continue to grow and take on a life of their own off the page - the author really succeeds in transporting you to the sights, sounds and smells of the past, which is a unique skill.
Not many authors can take you away on a ride with the characters so that you feel you're there with them, but I felt that with Wolfsbane. And you know the book where you notice you're not far from the end and think 'oh no what shall I do then' .... this is one of those. Outstanding.
NJ Just moved into the elite in this genre of writing in my opinion. Please tell me there will be a book #3 (and 4, 5, 6, 7... :-) !!
*A Copy of this Book Was Given To Me By The Author In Exchange For An Honest Review*
Tales of a traveller is a clever, if slighly misleading title. The traveling was through time, from present day twenty first century to some time in the middle ages. (A trip I have often wished possible, especially if I could take my knowledge with me.) This is a romance, though; not a sci fi novel. It is complete in itself, but is book two in a series, and judging by this one well worth reading. Whilst Martha is the central character, I found two others, Vadim and Anselm much more interesting and I was pleased when Anselm turned out to be not as bad as at first painted. It will be interesting to see how his character is developed in the next of the series.

Just as great as the first one! This book kept me reading well into the night, with it's gripping storyline. Martha has attitude in this book and she is a handful of a 'guest'. We also get to know a bit more of Vadim's Robin hood tendencies and some of his true ambitions. I loved the way in which Martha always 'puts her foot in it' but seems have a knack of talking herself out this situations as well. Not as big a cliff hanger at the end of this book but I still want more, I need to know how life will change for all the characters due to the agreements made in this book, and to know if certain man's heart will continue to beat or if Martha's heart will be broken when he breaths his last!
Wow! Just Wow!! Talk about massive book hangover! I miss all the characters already!! Wolfsbane is just as superb as the first book Hemlock. So much happened that kept me glued until the wee hours of the morning. I love the characters, the drama unfolding, the scenery, damn, I loved everything about this story. The writing is excellent, the story is over the top fantastic. It delivers everything you want in a time travel. Gads, this was just a wonderfully written, fantastic, visual enlightened read and moreso after visiting N.J. Laoyouni's FB page two more books will be written to complete this series.
I wasn't sure what was going to happen. Stuck in the past Martha has finally reconciled this is where she needs to be, if she is to stay with the one she loves. Taken by Hemlocks enemies and seduced by him, can she ever go back to Hemlock will he take her back?
Hemlock feels lost by what has happened to Martha, and cannot live without her.
I honestly don't want to give too much away. The story was well written, and the author did the characters well.
ok, I really liked the story. I left a review of Hemlock, the first book in tales of travelers. I wasn't happy with the ending knowing I would have to buy another book to know what had happened. after reading the last book I have to say I enjoyed this story very much.
Lots and lots of angst.... Martha pissed me off a couple of times but I hate that it just ENDED with so many loose threads... Unless this is an attempt at a third book but still. Too many storylines left flapping in the wind. But still a good read. Will keep an eye out to see if any other books are to follow. :)
HEA. I loved Martha and Vadim together. I also liked how Martha brought Seth back together with Anselm and tried to him them reconcile. Martha is pretty headstrong and not someone to be trifled with. Plus she's got the almighty Vadim wrapped around her finger. She even dared to voice her opinion on sparing the lives of the prisoners of war in front of the King Rodmar.
Loved the first book bought the second. The second book was almost as good. It left a lot of questions at the end. Definitely needs another book to tie up loose ends with some of the characters.
I loved this book which I read directly after finishing book one in the series. If you like a bit of romance along with a nailbiting (at times) story then you'll love this timeslip novel. I can't wait for book three.
Book two was as good or better than book one. I really like the way the author gave the main character strength but also how she evolved from her mistakes. Bravo!
