Grimdale Graveyard Mysteries #1

Quasi Morti Del Tutto

Rate this book
Cosa fare quando hai tre fantasmi sexy e possessivi che ti vogliono scopare in lungo e in largo?

Mi chiamo Bree, e vedo i morti.

E i miei tre amici terribilmente sexy?

I started reading this book because I saw a reel on Instagram by the author about how spicy it is. Well, I'm exactly halfway through the book, and there has been zero spice. She has held Ambros's hand, that's it. This would've been fine if the story had any real hook, substance, or if the romantic interests had any slow burn sexual tension. The ghost men are out of touch with the modern world even though they "live" in it, watching TV and everything. Ambrose is blind though she writes about him as if he can see. Pax is a buffoon that waves a sword around like an idiot, fighting imaginary druids. Edward is a pervert looking for whores and obsessed with his dick that he apparently can't even use as a ghost .. we are supposed to find these men attractive? Appealing? When they are written so ridiculously that I can't even take them seriously, never mind lust after them. I'm truly disappointed.

Perfect for lovers of paranormal romance, reverse harem, and mystery! This brought me back to Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires vibe mixed with Scooby gang. Such a fun read!

The underdog comes thru, Bree isn't really liked because of her so called weird demeanor. She sees ghosts in a Manor, they're the only ones that understand her. The three ghosts and Bree have this friendship that brings them even closer throughout the events unraveling in the story! Yup, Scooby gang reference is because of an unsolved murder in the neighborhood, which Bree and her 3 buddies don't hold back to investigate.

The mystery in this book was luring, I loved the dynamic between four of them, they're so funny! I had so many lol moments reading this book. The friends to lovers trope was so well paced and of course there was the romance! I cannot wait to dive into the next book.

Huge thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All opinions are my own.

2.5 ⭐️DNF 39%. Not for me.

This is VERY British!
If you’re familiar with those old Britt sit-coms, the ones that use snarky comments as humour, bleak colours, and lots of tea? That’s this book. Think ‘Open all hours.’, ‘Are you being Served?’, etc..

Combine that with gapping holes in logic, to up the Britt humour and ridiculousness.

The FMC supposedly has been seeing and interacting with ghosts since she was 6, but still doesn’t know how to do so subtley. Instead draws as much attention as possible, and complains about the results. 🤨

While the entire neighbourhood knows about her ‘delusions’, she’s done nothing to prove herself, help others, make a business out of it, reach out to others (she’s a special snowflake - the only one she knows), or research that we know of (internet anyone??).

An incident when she was 15 occurred, which she flipped out over, and demanded her 3 ghost besties never speak or interact with her again.
They keep this promise for the next 2 years [after which she leaves to travel the world].

If they are that good at respecting her wishes, why couldn’t she talk to them, set healthy boundaries?

5yrs on, she returns and things become crazy again.
At least 50% can be blamed on her, and her failure to again set healthy boundaries, rather than needlessly dramatise, draw as much attention as possible, and then entirely blame the ghosts and people giving her shit (for talking to walls, waving her arms, yelling, etc…can’t imagine what anyones problem is 🙄🙄).

She’s face-timing her Dad, all upset about a health issue of his, how it’s going to affect her, how much she will miss him, and on and on (since the majority is about her, not feeling for her too much). She says she has to go, he’s trying to say I love you, she hangs up in the middle, with ‘bye Dad’.
Dramas happening in the background, and ‘she’s upset, cause she loves him sooo much, and is bemoaning all the lost time, past and future..’ 🥱😅

She just discovered a body, her neighbour-family friend, murdered, is talking to the police. The coroner is a friend from school, their happily chatting and making plans, cause they have so much to catch up on. Meantime, said neighbours ghost is understandably upset in background…😳 she however, is not upset. 😧🤷‍♀️

Then of course are the 3 ghost besties, who have known her since she was six, now perving on her bosoms constantly.. 😵‍💫

They are ridiculous, annoying, complete drama queens, behaving in ways that make them seem unintelligent, constantly causing problems like children, but we are supposed to consider them ‘hot’. ???

Like I said, it’s British humour. Never let logic get in the way of a good joke, or good taste, consideration, or basic empathy… 🤣😂

I LOVE sarcasm, but not poor taste, or a plot that doesn’t add up, particularly if it includes a murder mystery.

Someone out there will think this is ‘just bloody brilliant’.
Good luck to you and enjoy. 😬

😕

I did enjoy reading the description and started off ok but for me it went down hill…found the story boring and the characters had no substance other than the prince and he was the character I liked least out of all…I read 60% then forwarded to 95% still found boring…

Review 4.5 stars!

This was such a fun read! 😍 if you are looking for a murder mystery combined with a cute & steamy reverse harem paranormal romance, you’ll love this series! It was also very emotional at times, I felt a pull at my heartstrings 🫠💔

Bree is definitely not a normal person. She sees ghosts. She is the only one that sees ghosts of people that won’t cross over until their unfinished business is fulfilled. But she’s not afraid, actually, she is used to them by now. Mostly because of the ghosts of three men that live in her family’s Manor. She’s known them her entire life. They took care of her and became her closest friends. A Roman soldier, a royal prince and a Victorian adventurer. But life surrounded by ghosts is not easy. She’s known around Grimdale as the weirdo that talks to walls… which is why she had to escape.

After years away from Grimdale and the ghosts of her past, she finally comes back. But now, she’s a grown up woman and it dawns on her just how hot her three ghosts are… and somehow, she can feel them.🔥When her neighbour is mysteriously murdered and odd things start happening around Grimdale, Bree and her three ghosts are the only ones that can help solve the mystery.

This story had everything! A reluctant slow burn why choose romance, fun and quirky characters and lots of suspense that kept me entertained throughout the whole night! also the spice takes some time to develop but when it does… prepare yourselves for a boiling volcano 🥵

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review

You're So Dead to Me
by Steffanie Holmes
This is a murder mystery and the main character can see ghosts. Her family home has 3 male ghosts. Things get spicy. She had been traveling the world for the last 5 years and blossomed during that time. It was interesting and the ending had a surprise twist.

This book is definitely a great read for the start of spooky season. The end had me all in knots, but I hopped straight into the next one. I couldn’t get enough of these characters, they don’t seem like they would work together, but they do. If ghosts fraternizing with the living isn’t your thing… uh… I probably wouldn’t read this book if I was you. They definitely uh fraternize.

The ending had me crying. I’m pretty sure they were happy tears, buttttt they might have been a little sad too. Can’t tell you why though I’m not giving them away.

This author, Steffanie Holmes, has become one of my new favorites. She also has a series out about book villains coming to life that I’m definitely reading next. Also she represents for the blind community. Not only is one of the ghosts blind in this one. The mfc of the other series is also blind. I thought it was nice for her to include it and didn’t change the ghost’s blindness when he died.

Hauntingly Fun, Hot Ghosts!

This is a funny, cute and smutty story with MC Bree who has the ability to see and speak to spirits. Joining Bree are her three best friends since childhood who happen to be ghosts.

Bree has been gone from her hometown since high school graduation and returns to watch her parent’s cats while they vacation.

Her three best friends, who are ghosts, realize their Bree has returned BUT she is a full blossomed adult. Bree wonders if her BFFs are still around, finding out that they are and realizing with adult eyes how sexy looking they are.

The story continues with Bree and her “friends” sexually attracted to each other. She receives a piece of a meteorite from a woman who tells her to keep it with her always. With this “rock” Bree starts experiencing changes occurring, such as being able to touch and feel her ghostly friends.

Two murders occur having those spirits go to Bree for help. Bree and her BFFs start investigating. Due to her “rock”, her friends start receiving uncharacteristic strength from Bree that involves smut. If you love smut, you’ll love reading these scenes. Bree’s childhood bullies are still around and are now adult bullies. You can bet Bree’s friends take care of them.

These three “friends” are hysterical. Mind you, being 200+ years old, they still behave in the manner of who they were at the time of their passing. A soldier, poet, and a blind explorer.

I enjoyed reading this fun, cooky, and smutty story and will be starting book two of more adventures. Spirits like them can haunt me anytime. 🤣

I fantasmarelli trombarelli tanto 'elli' non sono.

Bree Mortimer vede i fantasmi.

This is a brilliantly funny, cosy and sometimes spicy British Paranormal Romance. It is a lighthearted, easy read, but it keeps you invested as the characters develop, and the relationship between them intensifies. I loved this story, the characters and the worldbuilding. The plot is well laid out with mystery, drama, witty banter and slow burn tension and romance, and has a small town/ village feel to it. I loved the ghosts and how they interacted with the world around them, and although you have to wait for the spice, when you get there it is exactly what is needed.

I'm in love with everything Steffanie Holmes writes. It doesn't matter if it's my thing or not. Her writing style simply has a really nice flow and I love her characters and plots. However, Nevermore Bookshop Mysteries will always be first Holmes love and I'm so glad we get a new series set in the same town and with the same kind of themes. I was even happier when I discovered I could grab a review copy via BookSprout while I wait for the paperback to be released.

Once more it was love at first sight from the very first page. The author has an amazing way of introducing us to the heroine of the story and although we're already familiar with the town, if you've read the Bookshop Mysteries at least, it feels like we get to see an entirely new part of town with an entirely new cast of characters. It was a mix of coming home and being amazed because of all the new elements and characters.

In this book the murder mystery didn't seem to be the central focus of the story. This book is mostly about getting to know the characters, their history, their relationship and their wants, needs and worries. The author does an amazing job telling us everything we need to know without making it feel like info-dumping. And that's partly because all the characters have their own voice and talk in a very natural way to us.

And although especially the guys, without a doubt because they're ghosts and can't leave the castle, seemed a little single-focussed at times they never become cliches. On the contrary. It was quite easy to see how our heroine had befriended them as a girl and now slowly comes to love them. Just like our heroine herself is likable, realistic and most of all the kind of character a lot of people will recognize themselves in. Bullied, adventurous and simple wishing to be normal.

I can't wait to discover what adventures we're gonna be having in future books!

Well, this was… not what I expected😅

For whatever reason, there is a massive hole in the market for ghostie romances, so, naturally, I was very excited when I stumbled across this book while searching for some! Unfortunately, it wasn’t everything I was looking or hoping for.

I’ll admit, I think I took the synopsis of this book too lightly because the tone and humor in this book was very jarring to me. The writing is SILLY, and it’s meant to be, and despite the synopsis reflecting that, I was still a bit caught off guard by just how silly it got. And, you know, I can get behind a silly tone and goofy humor, but I think the humor in this book was just a little too crass for me at times. So much so that it was off-putting, especially when it came to Pax.

The story itself was just okay, but I actually really did like the characters! Ambrose was my favorite, my sweet summer child🥺 Also, Steffanie Holmes really did come through with some great lines at times, whether in a humorous way or in a this-is-just-a-really-great-line sort of way! Two examples, respectively:

“Perhaps if your father had hugged you more as a child, you wouldn’t write such insufferable poetry.” [P. 133]

“I’ve given a bit of head over the years in hostel rooms that smell like feet. The guys usually taste of pot and desperation. They’re searching for themselves in the world, just like me. And for a night or two, we search together and somehow still come up feeling emptier than ever.” [P. 261]

Overall, not my favorite, but now that I know what to expect from these books, I’ve definitely made a mental adjustment going forward!

Oscillated from ‘okay’ to ‘eye roll inducing’ pretty consistently. Very cartoonish with its forced humor and over the top characters.

I could see when people often highlighted things that I could tell were supposed to be funny, but tried too hard to be. The fact that those passages were saved so often almost made them worse.

I wanted to understand the appeal, but I just couldn’t when the dry innocuous remarks were the only things that made my face twitch in a positive way. Those rarities were more natural, without the injected air of desperate expectancy.

Like a drunk uncle with a gaping grin, his mouth drying out the longer he pins you with an expectant look, impatiently waiting for you to get the joke he just told.

But while you’re not sure whether he ever told the punchline, you’re certain the set up was not spoken in a language known to man.

It was giving Geraldine from Zodiac Academy at times. A bit much when levity shouldn’t come at the steep price of our sanity.

The murder mystery was a nice touch, however. As well as introduction to an interesting menagerie of characters.

Vibrating, well endowed ghosts only she can touch? Why the hell not. It may be ridiculous, but sometimes you need something that allows you to turn your brain off for a bit.

OMG I freaking ADORED You’re So Dead to Me and highly recommend it to fans of why choose romance!! This was one of those books that made me and my weird self feel seen and beloved and understood. I'm Shakespeare scholar and a devout lover of all things Poe, so needless to say the world this author has crafted felt like home. I am equally obsessed with each of the MMCs--Pax, Edward, and Ambrose are all absolutely delightful and so very special.

Tropes to Expect:

—Slow-to-Medium Burn Spice
—Childhood Friends-to-Lovers
—Juicy Murder Mystery Plotline
—Clever Banter/Quippy Dialogue

All things considered, You're So Dead to Me proved to be truly a paranormal romance at its finest—dark humor and spooky rom-com vibes with plenty of mystery and magic. Perfect for fans of the Heart Hassle series and readers looking for a refreshing and unique story and cast of characters!! The ending has me REELING so thank goodness book 2 release TOMORROW.

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.

This was a fun read. It does have a few editing errors which is one of the reasons I’ve not marked it higher but if you can ignore them it’s an enjoyable read.

Set in a small village Bree is tasked to find out who has murdered a family friend and framed his wife. She’s not a detective though, she just happens to be able to speak to ghosts including those of the murder victim.

Although it’s described as a romance and does feature some spice this isn’t that type of book. It’s a slow burn mystery with love, laughs, betrayals, twists and turns.

I loved the British references like GBBO and the talk of things like village fayres it helped to set the scene.

I was eager to see how the love interests would play out and thought they were handled really well and I look forward to seeing what happens in future books.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars for the excellent cliffhanger ending.

What an entertaining read! A cozy mystery with paranormal/romance and some silly dark
humor. You can’t take this book seriously at all but I think if you are into fun, offbeat humor, and quirkiness in a book then you’d like it. The humor to me is similar to the show What We Do in the Shadows but with ghosts. Plus sexual chemistry between Bree and the
ghosts. Which is actually HILARIOUS especially with the wording used such as “his scepter” and “the princely shaft of delight.” I mean it’s just so amusing to me and made me chuckle while reading and I had a good time with it!

Perfect for someone like me who’s always been a gothic little weirdo with a dark and unconventional sense of humor and has always wished to live in a Victorian gothic manor, next to a cemetery and be able to see and talk to ghosts! For me this one was just such a fun read.

I'm not even sure how to explain this book... but I really enjoyed it.

The story and the mystery were quite interesting. I enjoyed how Holmes structured the world and how the ghosts could behave. The magic is intriguing, and I'm eager to learn more about how it works.
All the characters were lovely in their own unique way.

But the spice scenes were somehow both ridiculous and scintillating...I was able to suspend disbelief about the whole gohsty sexual encounters, but then she'd use lines like "Ghost sex is so much better than regular sex." Or "I could be crazy Bree the ghost slut, with my three spirited lovers." And it just came across as comical and removed the emotion. Not sure if that was the intent?

Ultimately, it was a fun and interesting read, though. I'll definitely pick up more of her books.

OK now I want ghost friends. This book was so unique and I loved it. Took a while to get into but there are so many genres, it makes you feel such emotion.

My jaw hit the floor at times...the spice...and because its different it seems to hit harder in some ways and I didn't even mind the 'why choose' storyline elements which usually get on my nerves

I cried

I got lost in the whimsy of the village life and the mystery elements kept me guessing

I got angry with the characters and fell in love with them just as much.

Now I guess I need to go read the sequel. Didn't even know there was one...

This book was such a delightful little surprise! I loved Bree and her trio of ghost men. Their banter and interactions were so fun and witty and I loooved the tension. Def interested to see where relationships go in the sequel ESPECIALLY after that twisty ending 👀

Also, I really loved the underlying murder mystery plot. I felt like I was hunting for the real murderer right alongside Bree and loved uncovering things with her.

I think this book would be a great intro into why-choose romance for anyone looking to give it a go. It’s slow burn with some spice, which works so well with this trope.

Def recommend giving this book a go!

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Awh, this was so good ! I am a big fan of SH work, and I love the real humanity her characters have.
Bree's adventures have brought her home, where she has to face her three ghost friends, Pax, Edward, and Ambrose, after some time travelling the world. She has to face how her relationship with them has changed.
Of course, it wouldn't be an SH book if we didn't have a murder! Oh, and horny ghosts. Mina from the Nevermore Bookshop series makes an appearance in this book, and I have missed her as I finished that series a short whole ago.
