High School senior, Zakeya Mosley, discovered lightning in a bottle after indulging in a blunt of sticky icky. Using her Botany genius, along with natural herbs and remedies, she invents a strain of bud that has the hood in a trance. Infected with happiness, the tranquility of the hood raises eyebrows at the local precinct, and at a government level – bringing unwanted attention Zakeya’s way. Faced with a difficult decision, Zakeya’s future and freedom are at risk. How will she choose, and will the right choice be made?
I got this book during BRAE and decided to read it as the synopsis sounded intriguing. This was a NTMA and the story had a lot of potential. It's definitely an original storyline, but it was a little disjointed. It could have used some editing.
The story centers around Zakeya, who was 17 then turned 18, and then back 17😩, needless to say she was a young genius that specialized in botany. She grew different strands of weed that were organic and created different feelings. It was cool af. The construction of the story was in the past, then in the present and it didn't flow well. Overall, I appreciated the different career path for the fmc, I don't think I've ever read about a black woman hood botanist and that part was refreshing. I would recommend editing to help bring her ideas together.
3.5⭐️ I got this book during the BRAE event because of the beautiful cover and the plot seemed intriguing. This story was short but was fairly well developed. I would have liked to see some parts expanded on more, but overall I enjoyed this one. If you enjoy reading YA and stories about black girl genius, this is one you’ll want to read!
This was a AMAZING read!!! This story had me asking my parent how do we culture plants like this. I love both type of gardening and this read tied them together beautifully and sprinkled some black girl magic on top. I loved it so much I want want a part 2
