Who is that man beside you?
Newly-weds line editor Natalie and film editor David have been fighting—fighting about money. Natalie has lost her biggest client, Alan, and the couple’s finances are strained. They have even lost their home. In between job searching, she works on her novel, but her confidence is shattered. She even begins to have doubts about David. Her dog Barley and her husband do not get along.
Alan’s wife Amanda contacts her for information, and she learns that Alan hasn’t just ghosted her, he’s disappeared. For some reason, David is suspicious. Why had Alan been sending her travel pieces to edit, Amanda said he never travelled? A budding friendship with Amanda is stymied when Amanda accuses Natalie of ‘having an affair’ with her husband. That’s crazy, Natalie thinks, I’ve never even met the man in person, only emails.
I chuckled at Natalie’s comment: ‘How was I to know he never published any of the work he sent me?’ Since 1998 haven’t we all immediately Google searched every name we come across?
I thought the dog not liking David was a lovely bit of foreshadowing.
For many chapters, nothing much happens, then about 62% in, you sense a twist is coming. At 73%, it hits, and Amanda’s bizarre accusations begin to make sense. The twist is satisfying. Can you really trust that man beside you?
I didn't, in the end, understand why Alan ghosted her.
A really fabulous cover, except that it looks like a cat, and her pet is a dog.

"The Client" by Kat Goss is a page-turning psychological thriller that you'll see played out in your head like a movie. Natalie, our protagonist, is a freelance editor who lives with her husband, David, and her dog, Barley. David and Natalie are struggling to hold onto their marriage, and since they're both freelancers, their problems are rooted in money troubles. So, when Natalie's main (only) client disappears, the problem becomes damaging to her marriage, too. When Amanda writes an email to Natalie claiming to be the client's wife and needing help, Natalie feels like she has no choice but to get involved. But what starts as an act of salvation and kindness puts Natalie's life in danger, and without the support of David, she has no one to turn to. As we learn who the mystery client was and why he disappeared, the excitement and chills keep us turning the page.

If you enjoy thrillers, this book is an excellent choice. The story keeps you guessing right until the end. From the very first chapter, it draws you in and doesn't let go until the last page.

Kat Goss excels at building suspense. The twists are intelligent and well-timed—not overly dramatic, but just sufficient to keep you second-guessing what’s really happening. The characters are flawed and believable, making the emotional stakes feel genuine.

I liked the short punchy chapters, and they made the book very easy to keep reading. The ending genuinely surprised me and caught me off gard and I never would have guessed it. I highly recommend this book if you're into domestic thrillers that offer psychological depth, unreliable characters, and plenty of shocking moments.

The tension in this story sneaks up on you. One minute, you're just following Natalie through her regular freelance struggles, and the next, you're pulled into a mess of lies, strange emails, and a missing person. The mystery builds at just the right pace, keeping things gripping without going overboard.

The Client brings together suspense, emotional strain, and a steady unraveling of trust that feels all too real. I liked how Natalie felt like someone you could know, which made the danger she faces hit harder. If you enjoy thrillers where ordinary life slowly turns upside down, this one’s a great pick.

This novel is well paced and emotionally layered. Kat Goss captures the unease that builds when something familiar suddenly turns strange. Natalie is a deep character, and her gradual shift from confidence to suspicion feels natural and compelling. The mystery is carefully structured, and the sense of tension stays present throughout. This is a story about trust and fear, written with quiet control and strong storytelling.

Ever watched a movie and wanted to shout out to the female lead: Noooo, don’t do that! Or wanted to tell her to look behind? Well this book is like that. When will we learn to trust our gut?

This was a very predictable book with a truly pathetic and unbelievable main character. I do not understand all of the positive reviews.
