Phoebe Ash's Cruel Pawn was a delightfully dark romance. All the crazies came out in this one. Priya is not a people person, which makes being a hitwoman the perfect job for her. Priya was pretty badass. She's intelligent, capable, and a little bit broken after the death of her family. She's determined to find out who killed her parents and is using the jobs to save up for her, and I quote, "revenge fund." She does have one person, her best friend and fellow miscreant, Silvio. I liked their friendship; I just wish there was more of it.
In the beginning, Arden's outside persona seems like your average nice guy. However, right away, his inner monologue gave him away. He was waving all kinds of red flags, lasers, and strobe lights. It was only after Priya made her move that his inner psycho came out to play. Woza! Arden is a murder puppy, and I love it! I love a good psycho. I liked Arden from the start. Some of my favorite moments were his group chats with his cousins. I was cracking up. This was not a good book to read in public for a lot of reasons.
This book was all about obsession. Arden was obsessed with Priya from the start, but it turns out that it's a two-way street. Priya matches Arden's kind of crazy, and he is not letting her go, and she's in denial about her feelings. Arden is hypnotic, and Priya can't help but fall under his spell. They could be good together, and if that’s not a terrifying thought, I don't know what is.
This book was all steamy passion and obsession. I got so wrapped up in the romance I forgot about the rest. There's a hit on Arden, and Priya wants information about her parents' death. There were a couple of reveals, nothing too shocking. Cruel Pawn was a good read; I especially enjoyed the ending. Dark romance readers, this one is for you.
