Sweet skittles, Megan Curd has done it again!
I had the amazing pleasure of reading Megan Curd's second installment in The Periodic Series and Daaaaaamn, the girl nailed it. I can not wait to discuss all the twist and turns this wonderful story takes you. And Jaxon *swoon* Jaxon is the bad boy with the good heart all the girls dream about. But watch it, I call dibs. I can't recommend this highly enough. Megan not only knocked Iron Pendulum out of the park, she knocked it all the way to Pluto!

I was fortunate enough to be able to read an advance copy of Iron Pendulum, and I can't express in words how much I love The Periodic Series. In short: It's a dystopian lovers wet dream! This baby has earned its spot at the top of my Favorite Reads of 2014 list!

This second novel of the Periodic series knocked my socks off—if you’re looking for an awesome steampunk dystopian series, then look no further! Curd has woven a tale so captivating that when all is said and done, you’ll be dying for more. And dying for more is exactly where I am as Curd leaves us with a most amazing cliffhanger that had my mind in a whirl!

Avery and all her beloved companions are back in Iron Pendulum, including swoonworthy Jaxon, best-friend Alice, and tech savvy Sari, a cast of characters I would certainly throw my lot in with if the chance ever came up. From the get go, I was enthralled with this second installment, jumping right back into to fierce world that Curd has created in this dystopian steampunk adventure.

As Avery tempts fate with her presence back in Dome 4, where corruption runs rampant and the tables have drastically turned against Avery and her friends, there were many a time that I just wanted to reach through the pages and punch her adversaries—they are awful, and I just loved to hate them as the story progressed. Erin, another teen able to produce steam, as well as another foe who I shall not name because his/her appearance in the novel had my jaw dropping, are so loathsome that I cannot wait for them to get their comeuppance; Curd has definitely turned this story on its head with betrayals and, like I said before, a cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers.

The world building is absolutely superb, and as evil slowly begins to take over all aspects both inside and outside the Dome, it's a heart-pounding race against time for not only Avery and her friends, but everyone else, as well.

If you love a good story and you’re looking for a series that is kick-butt and will leaving you breathless, then look no further. Curd’s Periodic series has it all—mystery, elements, zombies, romance, kick butt fight scenes, betrayal, heartache, joy, fear… read it. You won’t be disappointed.

Iron Pendulum is the exciting sequel to Megan Curd’s amazing steampunk adventure The Steel Lily and is another edge of your seat thrill ride that weaves dazzling romance with thrilling discovers and extreme danger as lives are on the line in the second book in The Periodic Series!

Megan Curd series does know how to write a brilliant steampunk tale. Iron Pendulum is a perfect mix of steampunk and dystopian that features a great cast of characters who share a fantastic dynamic and who continuously enhance a brilliant storyline. I’m very impressed how well written and well plotted this series is. Its obvious Curd has put a lot of thought into the development within her series. Certain revelations and developments go a long way to creating a solid developing story with plenty of history and back story.

Iron Pendulum continues to follow sixteen year old elementalist Avery Pike upon her return to Dome Four. After the shocking discoveries made by Avery and her friends in the first book, Avery and the resistance find themselves on a race against time to help the people of Dome Four who appear to be dying from lack of oxygen while also going up against a powerful enemy who wants complete control over the dome for himself.

As with the previous book I found Avery a thrilling heroine to follow. This fiery redhead with the multi colored eyes is a brave and passionate fighter who is willing to give everything and help people even when they don’t necessarily give her the respect and appreciation she deserves. Avery is one of those kick-ass characters who, while she doesn’t necessarily know when to censor her words or actions, is generally forward moving, quick thinking and daring. Avery loves her friends greatly and will do anything to protect those she cares about. Basically Avery rocks!

Megan Curd has penned a great heroine in Avery, but also manages to create a great cast of characters to compliment her. Jaxon, Sari and Alice return as well as Legs and Dana, with Dana having a more focal role in the story. Jaxon continues to be Avery’s solid love interest. Even the inclusion of a strapping her male character to the series does not interfere in Avery’s devotion and adoration for Jaxon as Megan Curd chooses to stay away from the stereotypical love triangle!

Incredibly shocking connections are discovered in this book with family connections popping up and a shocking betrayal just around the corner. Avery will face the shocking loss of someone she loves deeply and with every chapter of the book, the story just gets better and better!

Megan Curd has some incredible twists up her sleeves and as Iron Pendulum races towards an extremely climactic ending, readers will be left reeling and eagerly anticipating the next installment as Curd ends the story on a bit of a cliff-hanger!

Iron Pendulum has been a long time coming, after finishing Steel Lily I had to read this, I NEEDED to know what would happen next, so I not so patiently waited, and when the opportunity arose to be part of the blog tour, I kept my fingers and toes crosses that I could participate.

Iron Pendulum picks up after Steel Lily, with Avery, Sari, Jaxon, and Alice mapping the tunnels to try and find some weakness in the headquarters defences. Very quickly this group of friends find themselves in a whole lot of trouble, threatening the lives of themselves, and the ones they love. Going into Iron Pendulum I knew what to expect from Megan's writing, so I began reading as soon as I could, eager to discover what would happen next.

Iron Pendulum is full of webs upon webs of secrets, mysteries, and lies. How Megan knew which was which, and who was who, and manage to get it all into the book to fit together seamlessly is beyond me, yet all of these make up a really interesting, thought provoking read. The twists and turns keep you guessing about what will happen, but also keeps you wondering who is on Avery's side and who isn't. Everyone has their own idea, their own goals they are striving for, and some of them will not be budged. As each new problem is thrown at them, some of the ingenious ways they figure it out is spectacular.

Towards the end of Iron Pendulum we are suddenly faced with new problems, one of which broke my heart. We also discover who is really on Avery's side, and one revelation shocked me so much. I did not expect this person to betray Avery, and go against her ideas and plans to make it a better place, and if it were possible to reach into a book and grab someone by the neck, this person would definitely see my hand around their neck in a heartbeat.

Iron Pendulum is full of adventure, mystery, romance, and also sadness, but every single chapter in this book makes a great read, and now the countdown is on for the next instalment. Maybe a bribe of virtual cookies will let me find out what happens to .......

COVER: Eye catcing. I love the fact that the picture is the inner working of a pendulum. Plus the cover fits the story.
COMMENTARY: As the story of my my reading life goes..... After, my baby girl practically guilted me into reading book 1 and loving it. I just had to dive into book 2 with her. I can say this far Megan Curd is turning out to be one of the authors I enjoy reading (only geared towards teens). I've said before I'm not a fan of dystopia, however I startling to question if it's just just the writing versus education because it seems I enjoy dystopia in the teen genre.
Back to Iron Pendulum... Curd didn't disappoint. Macy and I were hanging on to the edge of our kindled the whole time. My only disappointment was the big reveal about Legs and Erin... This storyline manifested gingerly in the first installment therefore I knew something was going was up these two. There was just do many signs. Although, it was obvious to me (as a grown woman), however, for teens it was startlingly placed to keep them interested. Macy and I can't wait for the third book in this fight for your right to live free series.
MY MAN : I can’t blame Avery for falling for Jaxon. If I was a teenage girl I would be head over heels for Jax too.

My Thoughts:

If you are reading this, it means one of three things. One, you are here for the blog tour (thanks for stopping by!). Two, you read my review of Steel Lily and were so excited you had to come check out Iron Pendulum! Or three, you found a random link on Facebook, Google, or Twitter and were kind enough to click it (woohoo, nice call sir or madam!). Bottom line, I don’t care how you got here. What I care about? GO BUY THIS BOOK. Okay, maybe that was a little crazy… Woo. Let start from the beginning.

Any of my regular readers will tell you that I am a reading machine. I push out books like it’s going out of style, especially this summer. I have loved all the variety I have come across this summer in my reading craze and I owe a lot of it to a new direction I wanted to take. I told myself I was going to step back for a little while and read some books that were “outside my norm”. First I hit Zombie books (and look where I am now, getting ready to start my 5th one. I have a problem) and now I have hit my second milestone: Steampunk. I’ll be honest. I’m not sure why I have veered away from Steampunk. I guess in my head I was just picturing a much more….. hipster kind of genre. Does that make sense? All I can think about when I think of Steampunk is cogs and big goggles. Oh hey, I was kind of right! J Steel Lily was my very first foray into the Steampunk subgenre, and I have to say, I LOVED IT. I couldn’t imagine Iron Pendulum not being just as amazing, well I was wrong… It was even better! WOAH!

So here’s the deal, I picked up Steel Lily (book 1 in the series) on B&N a few weeks ago after having been selected to participate in this blog tour for Iron Pendulum. Generally I never join blog tours or promos for books that aren’t the first in a series that I am not familiar with. It just means I have a whole lot more work cut out for me and that usually doesn’t fit into my time constraints (especially in a series such as this where each book is over 300 pages). I got my copies of Steel Lily and Iron Pendulum about a month ago, yet they just sat in my library. I really wasn’t all that excited about reading them, but I really can’t tell you why. With mere days until my blog tour, I told myself I needed to get reading. Well… I read them alright. I sat down and read the entire ~300 page Steel Lily in one sitting. The. Entire. Thing. Oh hey, then guess what? I did the exact same thing less than 24 hours later with Iron Pendulum. Need I say more? You guys know how much work goes into to reading a book and it isn’t something I take lightly. The fact that I read the entire novel in one sitting, should be all the explanation I need to give right here! I COULD NOT PUT THESE BOOKS DOWN!

I will go ahead and state my only negative comment for this novel series. They are YA in true fashion. 15-16 year old characters, no sex, etc. That is kind of my complaint. These books have some seriously adult undertones. I was really taken aback to see that the main character is only 15 and her boyfriend is 16. In my head I am having a really hard time picturing any teens of that age having the mental capacity that these teens do. Even if they had grown up in the environment that they did. I have a sister who recently turned 14 and I’ll turn 23 in a month, I just can’t imagine the characters in this book being closer to her age and maturity than mine. It was just really hard to picture the characters as so young to me. That being said, I think the part that kind of irked me is that the characters were essentially adults. Sexual tension, all the drama, they just didn’t strike me as teenagers. I really would have liked to see this series set with 17-18 year olds instead of 15/16 year olds. I know it sounds miniscule, but I think most everyone can agree that that extra two years can change a whole lot in terms of both physical and metal maturity. Aside from that, I have nothing negative to say about Iron Pendulum!

I have to say that Iron Pendulum is more than likely going to be on my list of the 10 best books I read this year, it series was that great for me. I do not regret reading this series for one second. It was an awesome YA read that really was a step in a great reading direction for me. In my review for Steel Lily, I said that it had strong parallels to another hugely popular YA series. In Iron Pendulum, I actually began to say very strong parallels to another hugely popular YA series which I would generally see as a bad thing, but in this instance I actually liked this series way more than either of them! I’d like to see THIS series turned into a box office smash, global-phenomenon film series! I think people would love it. Hollywood execs, LOOK HERE! Haha!

With the ending IP left us with, I know there are going to be more books in the series, but I have actually never connected with Megan Curd to ask her! I will be contacting her soon to let her know how amazing her series was! I’ll be sure to relay any info I get about book 3 for you guys! Trust me, by the time you binge read the first two books like I did, you will be begging for book 3!

Just like with Steel Lily I am sure that Iron Pendulum will leave me with a book hangover that lasts well into my next read. I feel bad for the author that has to follow Megan Curd in my brain right now. Yes people, overly critical and cynical just said that. I’m telling you guys, this book was Ah-MAZING! All in all, I am going to give it a solid 5 star rating! I hope all the awesome things I’ve said here help to sway you in the direction of definitely taking a chance on The Periodic Series, like I did. You will NOT be disappointed! Review:
The ending of Steel Lily left Avery at the alliance headquarters reunited with her father but grieving the death of her mother. The beginning of Iron Pendulum picks up soon after that, so there is no gap between the two installments of the series. Avery and her friends are scouting out some tunnels between headquarters and Dome four, her former home, when they are attacked by a bunch of Zeros. In case you don’t remember, the Zeros are victims of radiation set off in the war and have also been experimented on my Xander, who fashioned them into his personal army. They are irrational, aggressive, and basically like zombies without the undead part.

There are also not supposed to be any new ones. Problem is, Avery recognized one of the Zeros as a former member of her class in Dome four. What’s more, Xander sent a message – he knows they’re down in the tunnels. Something is clearly afoot in Dome four, so Avery, Jax, and Alice are going back in (bugged, of course) to figure out in how far it is under Xander’s influence and what governor Lindroth is planning.

Avery had been gone for six months, and it quickly becomes obvious that the situation for people in the dome has gone from bad to worse during that time. Every day, people get sick, cough up blood, and die. Without Avery to provide most of the dome’s steam, the air filtration system had to be shut off more and more often, since the other Elementalists (among them her old nemesis Erin) cannot live up to her steam quota. Everyone, commoners and the governor alike, wants to know where she’s been, why she abandoned them to their fate. They are blaming her for their misery. The Polatzi forces violently break up mobs of protesters. And Avery definitely feels the pressure. The pressure to provide, to answer questions, to evade, to survive, to keep the secrets of the alliance safe despite threats to hurt her loved ones – and above all, the pressure to give people hope. That she’s smart-mouthed as ever and prone to cause riots does not always work to her advantage.

I really have to commend Avery for her bravery and her spine of steel, even though she’s a bit impulsive at times and can’t stay out of trouble. She has to deal with so much injustice and loss (I’m thinking of one death in particular, plus the ending – how could you do this to me, Megan Curd??)in this novel and she still gets up again and keeps going. I also enjoyed how despite some tensions that arise because Jax has to get close to evil Erin and Avery is supposed to weasel information out of Vince, the governor’s son, the relationship between Avery and Jax remains solid. They’re a team, they trust each other, they have each other’s back. So much unnecessary jealousy-drama could have been created from this situation, and I’m very glad that wasn’t the case! Also, the awesome snarky banter between Jax and Avery that I loved so much in Steel Lily is still there and sharp as ever!

As for Jax himself, I really liked that we get to see another side to him in this novel. He’s not just all smartassery and mechanic genius. Because they’re staying with a friend of Avery’s who is taking care of a bunch of orphaned little children, he has to learn to be kind and take care of those weaker than him. I will never forget the image of ‘Prince Jax’ having an imaginary tea party with the little girls. And a tiara on his dreadlocks.

As the days wear on and more people get sick despite Avery filling the steam canisters every day, questions arise. Why are the canisters empty every night when the steam should have lasted for a whole month? Where is that energy going? What’s the massive iron clock with its tick-tocking pendulum that now stands in the marketplace for? Is the governor just a power-hungry elitist, or is he in league with Xander? What’s up with all the Zeros in the Polatzi forces? Can Avery really count on the loyalty of all of her friends?

The pace of this book is fast and doesn’t leave space for lulls in action or a moment of boredom. Despite that, character development is not overlooked and there are short moments of ‘normalcy’ for Avery and her friends before the dome goes to hell in a handbasket again. I also really liked the addition of Vince as a character and that we get to see a bit more of Sadie. That girl’s a hacker genius and they’d be screwed without her.

One small complaint that I have is that I would have liked some more conversations and bonding between Avery and her father. They’ve been apart for so long, and I’d have liked to see them reconnect a bit more before Avery runs off to the dome again. Also, I’d have liked some more info about how the world came to be as it is, but I guess that will have to wait until the next book.

Apart from that though, this book is an awesome, action-packed ride! The ending was unexpected, and there are a couple twists I really didn’t see coming, as well as characters not turning out to be who you thought they were. Iron Pendulum continues the blend between post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, and fantasy with a heavy dose of snark that won me over in Steel Lily. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

INITIAL THOUGHTS
To say I was impressed and flattered is an understatement for how I felt when I was approached to read this, the second book in The Periodic Series, and review it too.
I was really looking forward to catching up with Avery + Jaxon and their fledgling relationship as well as learning more about then Alliance (good guys) and the ever experimenting resistance ruled by Xander.

MY REVIEW
I received an e-arc of this book in exchange for my honest review, and for posting that review during the blog tour.
The cover of Iron Pendulum is really eye catching and really adds to theme created with the Steel Lily cover. The cogs and wheels are carried over and I'm looking forward to seeing the cover for bk 3 Copper Phoenix hopefully continuing with this great cover theme.
Would the cover make me pick up the book from a book store shelf? Yes it certainly would, I think it gives the series a steampunk feel. The cogs are quite symbolic too of "things" within the plot all needing to fit together to reveal the larger picture/plot.
So Avery, Jaxon & Alice are going undercover and back into Dome 4 to find out what has changed. Sadly a lot has changed and it isn't for the better. The "normal" "Traditionals" side of the dome is even more rundown than before. If it is even possible their conditions have gotten worse. The governor, Lindroth appears to be rationing the Air Filtration, so it means the traditional's are needing to wear their masks more and more. The richer Elite side of the Dome don't appear to be short on power for the air filtration system and even if they were they have much more expensive superior masks to wear should the need arrive.The three teens find a place to stay with Dana and the youngsters she has taken in to love and protect when their own families cannot care or are no longer there to care for them. It was Dana that took in Avery when her parents disappeared. Avery's "talent"/element is as usual in much demand. Though it does seem that no matter how much power and steam she gives there is never enough to go around or even give a regular supply of clean air for the "traditional's" to breathe. In fact families are becoming ill due to the problem air they breathe in despite having their "protective" masks. Some of the children that Dana cares for are also getting sick and coughing up blood. Avery, Jaxon etc need to find out whats going on and what can be done to save the children and people that are dying.
Avery must infiltrate the governors departments so she sets herself back into the task of using her ability. The one who replaced her (Erin) becoming jealous and resentful of Avery's return. Governor Lindroth assigns his son Vincent to keep an eye on Avery, whilst Jaxon tries to get close to Erin and find out the truth about the Zeroes army. Both Avery and Jaxon want to find out if Lindroth and Xander have some sort of plan.
Another character that features a lot in this installment of The Periodic Series is Legs, however there are a lot of questions as to where his loyalties really are. This book has lots of action, drama, conspiracy, betrayal, love of course and more!
I really can't go into any more details than I have as you need to read the book for yourselves. The end was kind of and abrupt end but a great cliff hanger ending. I love the characters even more than when I initially met them in the Steel Lily. I also loved the fact that the Steel Lily was mentioned in this book. I like the idea and the description og the Iron Pendulum in this book and am seriously already anticipating who/what the Copper Phoenix will entail within it's pages.
So did I enjoy the book? I'm being totally honest here, I truly loved it.Would I recommend the book? I do recommend this book, in fact I highly recommend this series. Would I want to read more of this series? Yes, please I'd love to read the Copper Phoenix as soon as it's available, please. Would I want to read other books by this author? I'd like to check out some of this authors other books too.

When I was invited to be part of Iron Pendulum Blog Tour I couldn’t refuse. When I read Steel Lily last year, I was really surprised with how good this world created by Megan Curd was so I had to accept the invitation and dive into the sequel.

Truth is, Iron Pendulum was such a crazy rollercoaster from the beginning I barely had time to breathe. We are thrust into this book head first and there’s not a single calm moment to relax a take a deep breath – it’s action packed, fast paced and simply amazing.

This book continues the exciting adventures of Avery but this time, after six months away from her home, she finds herself within Dome Four once again. With the help of her friends she has help those in need and try to save her Dome from the tyrants’ hands.

If I had enjoyed Steel Lily and its powerful characters, this one was even better. The steampunk elements were even more visible in this book and the whole corruption within the Dome was so well explored I feared for the main characters. The characters were even better than in the first book, more matured and grown-up, with a new idea of priorities and self-defence. Avery and Jaxon’s relationship continued to make my blood run wild – how it developed to such a deep romance makes me so happy to ship them.

There were a few surprises that I did not see coming. Some of those surprises were terribly sad and I couldn’t believe that Megan Curd would do such a thing. But when you have a war between good and evil, both sides always loose. Other surprises were shocking though I admit that one or two were slightly predictable.

The world after World War III was simply amazing. The idea of Domes supporting human life, of Elementalists giving human steam so they can breathe is a terrific idea and also terrifying. I loved how deep into this world we enter in this book, how much we get to see of it by Avery’s perspective.

Iron Pendulum is definitely one great sequel to an already amazing series. This is a kick-ass story with so much action and development that will make your jaw drop. If you like steampunk, dystopias, romance, friendship, corruption, betrayal, action, adventure and everything that makes a good book, you should try the Periodic Series.

Thank you so much Megan Curd for allowing me to be part of this amazing universe. Looking forward to see what will happen now because, let’s be honest, cliffhangers like that make us all a bit desperate ;-)

4.5 Stars. Although I keep hearing dystopia is dead, I'm very that Megan Curd doesn't agree. Iron Pendulum is the second book in her Periodic Series. I haven't read the first one yet and was concerned that would be an issue, but it wasn't. The author does a fabulous job of providing just as much of the backstory as necessary to keep up with  what happens in Iron Pendulum. And a lot happens. The book is full of action with a lot of unexpected twists.

There are a few relationships that would probably be more meaningful if I'd read Book 1 first, but it didn't prevent me from enjoying this fast-paced young adult novel that is part fantasy, part steampunk, and a whole lot of pulse-pounding adventure.

Avery Pike is an elementalist, someone who can control the elements. Her specialty is creating steam which is used to provide oxygen to the inhabitants of Dome Four. Even though she generates enough steam in a matter of minutes to power the dome for a month, it disappears almost overnight. Add to that a deathly illness plaguing the Traditionals (non Elites), creepy zombie-like guards, and the erection of the iron pendulum that's supposed to keep everyone safe, and things aren't adding up. Avery and her friends try to find out what's going on, save the lives of the Traditionals, and bring about a revolution. Like I said, action packed.

Plot
The plot is gripping and only slowed long enough to let me catch your breath, but just barely. There were a couple of areas that I thought didn't seem plausible, but this is a fantasy, so I chose to ignore those and just enjoy the ride. Iron Pendulum is pure entertainment. It's on the longish side at 335 pages, but it never drags. The author has created a fascinating world that is both dark and hopeful. And because of that, anything is possible, which means nothing is predictable.

CharactersThe story is full of deep, complex, colorful, and nuanced characters that are easy to root for, to love, and even to loathe. Everyone from Jaxon, the sexy dreadlocked love interest and fellow rebel, to smart-mouthed, Christian house mother, Dana. I would love to get a peek a Vincent's character bio. He's the son of the Dome's Governor Lindroth and is neither completely good nor bad, but is perfectly flawed to the point that he is believably human and infinitely fascinating.

I had a hard time getting a sense of who Avery is, though. This might be where reading Book 1 first would have paid off. If I had, perhaps I would have had a better sense of who she is. Because she's the narrator, I can't tell if she's deliberately holding herself back, or if the author spent so much time creating such an amazing cast of supporting characters that she forgot about Avery. Regardless, it works really well because it's easy to step into her shoes and experience the novel as Avery.

Bottom LineA unique story in the young adult dystopian genre with its elements of fantasy and a fun steampunk vibe. The characters are fresh and a setting so brilliantly crafted, it's almost a character itself. Now I'm off to read Steel Lily, the first book in the series available now for just $0.99

You couldn't help yourself, could you Megan? Why did you have to do this to me? Of course I still love you and I f-ing loved this book again but you know I have to hate you on some level for what you made me go through in this book.

Iron Pendulum is the sequel to the fantastic Steel Lily and I'm happy to say it's just as brilliant! I'm not going to give a short summary because I don't want to give away any spoilers! I knew it was going to be good, but sequels often suffer from the Second-Book-Syndrome. Some manage to be pretty good or even great but mostly they're just set-ups for the upcoming epic finale (if it's a trilogy). Most of the time, they're not better than the first book. They're not supposed to be like this. They're not supposed to make you sob and yell and ugly cry. My head is still spinning from all these twists and all the heartbreak.

My mind is still a bit woozy so I'll babble a bit about what I liked and that's it. I loved that the story wasn't boring! There were so many twists that I didn't see coming! Megan destroyed me in this book. I ugly cried. Multiple times. And I don't do that. Not ever! This woman is awesome and Megan I'm so happy you decided to send a review request to me last year for Steel Lily. I love you, but like I said, I kind of have to hate you a bit.

I love Avery, Jaxon, Dana, Sari, Lexie, Alice,... All those great guys. Jaxon is yummy, Avery is awesome, Dana is hilarious and fantastic! I grew to love Vince over the course of the book. He grows on ya. Not gonna lie, people die in this book. And it will break your heart. Megan, you evil genius.

I cannot recommend this series enough. It's fantasticly written and remain surprisingly original in the dystopian genre with its steampunk hints and the elemental powers stuff I love so much. So pick up Steel Lily and then Iron Pendulum so we can talk about how great (but mean and evil) Megan really is.

'Iron Pendulum' is the second book in a fantastic young adult steampunk fantasy series. It continues where the first book left off - following our heroine, Avery, as she tries to pick up the pieces of her life after the war that destroyed almost everything. Now living outside the Domes - away from the awful tyranny she hadn't know existed until recently - Avery and her friends are determined to stop Xander and his horrific experiments at any cost. It just so happens that this time the cost is steep - Avery must go back inside her old home of Dome Four to determine if Xander is hiding out there to continue his evil plans. Going back home is hard for Avery - especially when she sees the destruction that's ravaged the place, along with how incredibly sick all the people are. There's a huge steam shortage in the dome and it's causing chaos - and death. For some reason, everyone is blaming Avery for the lack of steam. Things are getting worse and time is running out for the dome and its residents. Avery has to figure out what's happening and stop it before it's too late.

Unlike most series, this second book was just as phenomenal as the first. Most of the time a series will start off strong and then get progressively worse with each following installment. This is definitely not the case here. Every part of the book - from the characters and the setting to the plot and the writing style - was fantastic. Avery, our heroine of the story, continues to be a great main character. She's strong, smart, caring, and devoted to those she loves. She also has some awesome powers to manipulate the elements that she's still learning how to control. She's not perfect though - she has her fears, doubts, and flaws just like everyone else - which I thought made her all the more realistic and easy to identify with. Avery's character does some major growing in this book - she becomes more independent, mature, and determined to fight for what's right no matter what. The rest of the characters are well written with their own personalities and quirks. I especially liked watching Avery and Jaxon as their relationship grew.

The setting was amazing, and I love how the author continued to describe it. With all the details and vivid imagery, it felt like I was there alongside the characters throughout the book. From the very first paragraphs I found that I could immerse myself back into the storyline like I had never left. The plot continues to be full of action, adventure, suspense, and tons of twists and turns. There were definitely some parts that left me puzzled and some that came out of nowhere and hit me like a ton of bricks. The story is fast paced and flows so easily that I didn't stop reading once I started. With the ease of the writing, the quick pace, and the fascinating story line - this is definitely a book (and series) that fans of the genre will not want to miss. Very highly recommended for fans of steampunk, fantasy, dystopias, and science fiction.

It embarrasses me to say that even though Steel Lily was one of my favourite books of 2013, by now most details from the book were hazy in my mind and I had to check my notes from before to remember some of the things that had happened. I didn’t remember some characters and that is a no no when you’re reading a sequel. I probably should have re-read book 1 but unfortunately, I had no time to do so if I wanted to post the review in time. That being said, I’m sorry if this review isn’t as thorough as it should be.

In Steel Lily, Avery and her friends had managed to escape Xander and went to work with the rebels, led by Lexie. In Iron Pendulum, the group’s objective is to enter doume four and try to stop Xander’s horrendous experiments. In Steel Lily, we got to meet the Zeros, people from WWIII. Now, we have a new development: in one of their excursions trying to get into the Doume, the friends encounter a familiar Zero, one of Avery and Alice’s classmate, Chase. It seems Xander’s experiments are evolving and things are starting to become even more ugly. Adding to that, when they reach Doume four, it seems everyone blames Avery for the lack of Steam.

However, Avery’s powers are evolving and new abilities start to surface. I loved how every character seemed to grow. Avery is still that always honest, direct girl I couldn’t help but love in Steel Lily. Alice is still a tiny bit annoying but I loved her banter with Jaxon. Oh god, that was hilarious. In the beginning, Jaxon is trying to be everyone’s hero but it’s Avery who gets to save the group from several Zeros, creating a, poo typhoon in the sewers as Alice says. Obviously, the girl had to savour the chance to joke about Jaxon’s poor figure covered in crap (her words, not mine). One of the things that proved that my memory sucks ass, was me not remembering the fact that Jaxon had dreadlocks. Don’t ask me why, but when I started reading Iron Pendulum, I forgot all about his appearance and thought he looked like a nerd. Sad, sad, sad. Despite that, I still gushed about his and Avery’s relationship as it developed and grew. The phases, the increasing intimacy and trust… Yup, Jaxon is still up there in my book boyfriend list.

I wanted to say so much more but I don’t want to spoil the book. Let me just say that Curd’s writing style is still as much addictive and enticing as it was. It’s simply but vivid. The reader is right there with Avery and the group. Go pick The Periodic Series up if you like the dystopian genre. It’s one of the best out there, in my opinion. I haven’t stopped bugging my friends about it, trying to get them to read it, so it’s legit!

Iron Pendulum is the long-awaited sequel to Steel Lily. Yes, long-awaited, because I couldn't wait to see what Avery and her friends were going to do to help Dome Four and its inhabitants.

When I was reading, I found myself laughing and smiling one moment and panting the next, and then possibly crying.

The laughing part was mainly from Jaxon and his sharp tongue, as usual. The crying and panting? Well, there definitely wasn't anything funny.

I was ranting about Iron Pendulum to one of my blogger friends, Anna from Enchanted by YA. And this is what I told her.

IRON PENDULUM IS 10 TIMES BETTER THAN THE HUNGER GAMES.

Because if you compare it to The Hunger Games, come on. There is seriously no need to compare. Iron Pendulum was such a good book, and undoubtedly much better than its predecessor too.

Let me justify this statement.

So much betrayal. So much I think I almost died on the spot when I found out who the traitor was. And yes, when you find out who the traitor is, the twists will come. All at once. BOOM BOOM BOOM. Be ready.

And so much tragedy and pain as well. I really felt so much pain for Avery that I wanted to cry, because no fifteen year old, even one destined to be the hope of the people, should experience what she went through. Of course, the characters each had their own part to play in the book and I adored all of them. Even Riggs.

Except some, of course. Like Xander, for example.

And someone who you wouldn't expect to hate when you reach the end.

The story was perfect. I shall leave it at that. That sentence is enough to show what I thought about the book.

And don't worry about the action. There's action already waiting for you in the first chapter, and it builds up to one explosive climax at the end.

As well as one cliffhanger.

Brief Review: Iron Pendulum needs to be read by every single dystopian fan, because I believe that it really is the trademark of the dystopian genre. Not only did it speak of hope in its simple but beautiful writing, it spoke of love in its many forms, from family to friends. That, I believe is what every true dystopian book should have, besides an oppressed world searching for hope. Megan Curd did it right and I just want to thank her for writing this sequel so perfectly.

[Iron Pendulum] brought back beloved characters (I didn't even know I missed!) in an action packed second installment that is leaving me in anticipation for the third book. - Nova @ Out of Time

When I cracked the book open (figuratively), I was first a little confused. It's been more than a year since I read the first book. I needed a little time before the story came back. Because of this, I'm really glad that the beginning was very smooth and let me catch up to the story. Past points were reviewed in a way that seemed right for the situation, rather than redundantly repeating info. I think whether or not I had read the first book last year or right before reading this, I would've appreciated the subtle refresher.

The story starts off with a bang. Things are moving in the first chapters, which is good. By the time the first major event is over, I have a bit of time to think about what just went on. By then, my brain is fully caught up as I'm anticipating all that's happening next.

And that's what this story did; leave me waiting for the next event. I never could predict the future moves of our MC, not that I wanted to. I enjoy being twisted and messed with by a book, it captivates me. This book certainly did till the very end. (No joke, I'm having a hangover at this ending. SPOILER (highlight to read: She pulled a Julie Kagawa with the Eternity Cure with us!)

I enjoyed how developed these characters were. They came off the pages and walked in my dark room with only my iPod lighting up. I was charmed by Jaxon, feeling for Dana and Alice, humoured by Sari, annoyed with Erin, shocked with Legs and understanding with Avery. I felt it was so real and Megan really told the story well in Avery's (first) point of view.

What makes this story only 4.5 stars? Uh-oh, I hate bad news. This story focused on one idea that lead to a whole other. When the story started getting to the middle, I was a little bored. Nothing was really going on in terms of actions. There was a lot of speaking and them trying to figure out what was going on, which is fine because the characters seemed out of the loop, but it seemed to go on a while. Though it made sense, I felt like the story wasn't really progressing in the middle. Some parts were slower and the ending where it all counted, seemed a little too fast.

However, despite this, I had massive feels for this story. I believe that feeling the story is one of the most important parts in a book, so this is definitely a novel to remember.

Full disclosure, I started this as part of a tour review and had to immediately put it down, What??? How could I??? Because there was no way I was going to wonder about the strength of book one and its background story! And now, both books pinging around in my brain, making me giddy for more, I can say without a doubt, Iron Pendulum by Megan Curd has carved a place in my YA dystopian heart!

If you read my review of Steel Lily , you'll know I had mixed feelings about it. There were some errors in the writing that threw me out of the story, and left me sad. But, I wanted to give the author, Megan Curd, another chance to win me over because I was very fond of the story, the characters, and the steampunk world she'd built. I bought Iron Pendulum the day after it went on sale because I was so eager to find out what happened next. Well, I wasn't disappointed! Let's get to the review.

From a Reader's Perspective:
Twists and turns and revelations, oh my! So much was explained in this story that was left dangling in the last one. I was caught by surprise a number of times as the tale unfolded on the page (not an easy thing to do with me because I can see most twists coming). Avery redeemed herself more with every page I turned. Middle of the trilogy blahs can't be found in this novel. You get action, reaction, and scenes that will leave you needing a hankie after you read them. Curd outdid herself with the emotion she threw into the story. Pacing is awesome, and I found myself totally engrossed in the story. If you don't like cliffhangers, beware! There's a big one at the end of this book. Of course, that leaves me frothing at the mouth to get hold of the next installment. If you haven't read Steel Lily, I suggest you do so before picking up this book. There are a few things that tell you the history, but you need to immerse yourself fully in the world so you have that connection with the characters that can only be built over time. Chills and thrills await you!

From an Editor's Perspective:
Nowhere near the issues of the first one. A misplaced pronoun here and there, but that's to be expected. Nothing that pulled me out of the story, and nothing that contradicted the first book. Nicely done.

I unfortunately did not get to read Steel Lily so I came into an already going story. There was enough recap to get me up to speed and I was easily sucked into this story. This is only my second steampunk series and I am now pretty convinced that I love me some steampunk!

Avery was really an excellent MC I was definitely glad she wasn't whiny or overly vulnerable or any of that weakness that I think authors put in there because maybe a badass is too hard to be feminine. I think that Avery is the perfect balance of badassedness and femininity.

I like that there are female leaders, it's a very empowering thing to read. I mean I'm no crazy unshaven women's rights extremist or anything but I am a girl who likes to see when a woman is recognized on a mutual level as the opposite sex.

The characters were bright and individualized and there were alot of them in there too. Avery and Jax were definitely my favorites. And umm yes Jax joins the ranks of YA Book Boyfriends indeed. He is a really complex character that I really enjoyed reading. He's invited top my tea party anytime! (I'm just saying) In life there's tons of characters there so I think it's pretty easy to keep track of all that's going on here. Xander was even an amazingly well written character who did evoke chills over my entire body. "It's a brave new world Avery..." that little bit and what followed.. ooh chills lol!

I really like the world the author created, I was totally sucked in and in my sci-fi loving brain's happy place! I laughed and swooned and cried. Yes, cried. It was gut wrenching for me at a point or two. But grit and emotion happen to be some of my favorite things in a book. I kinda got ripped in two at the end and I now am fully invested in this series. I NEED to have the next book as soon as possible LOL! I can't wait!

I really got lost in the story easily and all of it visualized well. All in all there's no complaints from me and now I must go backwards and read Steel Lily! LOL!

I definitely recommend this series for YA Steampunk lovers as well as first timers. It will engage your imagination in deliciously fantastic ways. Dang near cinematic. I can pretty much guarantee that you will enjoy it at much as I did! Definitely a MUST read for YA lovers everywhere!

Avery knows she has to go back to Dome Four. She promised she would be back and when she gets back she finds things have went even more down hill since she left. She is being blamed for the shortage of steam. Avery digs deep and finds out what is making the people sick and just how far it goes. Along with her friends she works to put a stop to the corruption. Another enemy seems to have plans for Dome Four as well. The people need a hero they can follow and Avery doesn't know if she is up to the challenge. She won't back down from her enemies and finds her and her friends in a lot more danger than she thought possible.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and was glad to get to read this one. Avery has become so much stronger than when she first started. She has a boyfriend, great friends and wants to do the right thing. She knows things are bad in Dome Four and she feels bad for not going back sooner. In Dome Four she finds more are dying than ever. The governor seems to have plans for them and she just has to find out what. Avery never knows who to trust for sure and always has to watch her back. The governor wants to take her down but he wants to make a show of it first. Jaxon is right there with her and the two clearly belong together. I love seeing secrets about Jaxon come out in this book as well. There is so much that goes on in this action packed book I had a hard time putting it down for anything else in real life. I loved the intrigued of not knowing for sure who was on the right side. Legs kept me confused as to what side he was on like usually. This book has lots of twist I didn't see coming. There is also loss in this book and I hate to see just how far these people will go to get what they want. I have to say the ending left me dying for more as I have to know what next. I would recommend this to anyone who like a dystopian/ Steampunk book or just wants a great read.

I had the absolute delight of reading Megan Curd's second book in her Periodic series, Iron Pendulum. I like this a lot more than the first book. A lot more of Jaxon, a lot more action and Avery's level-headed and sometimes temperamental actions, fun and smart Alice and the intelligent geek Sari. This book was a wonderful read.

In Iron Pendulum, Avery has to go back to the very place she wanted to leave desperately, Dome 4. The conditions are even worse than when she left and the people are blaming her. Avery and gang have to find out if Dome 4 is under Xander's command and if not try to convince them to side with her.

A few secrets came out with this book and the ending has me a little worried. This book was replete and action packed. There wasn't a moment when I wanted to put it down. I loved the Avery and Jaxon scenes. Jaxon is just plain adorable. He is like the huggable, lovable giant. His sarcastic humor in addition to Avery, Alice and Sari's are to watch out for. The world building has been amazingly done and you can actually feel the sword hanging over your head like with the characters. The evil creeps over you with each passing page, with each passing situation. Curd's post-apocalyptic world manages to suck you in.

An amazing book from the author. What I felt was missing in the first book, the author manages to capture in this book. Awaiting the third book eagerly.

Sweet baby Jesus, this book was a phenomenal 5-leave me hanging on the most epic cliff hanger ever stars! I don't even know where to begin, this is the ultimate book hangover. If you want a book to read that will be consuming your thoughts a week, two weeks, even a month from now...go read this book!

Iron Pendulum starts off where Steel Lily left off. Avery is making a solid effort to bring down Xander but at every turn Xander is one or several steps ahead of them. You have to ask yourself why? how? So I cannot tell spoilers even though I would love to because there are a million things that left me with my jaw on the ground. Let me just tell you there is betrayal, from the least likely people that will leave you p*ssed off and want Avery to serve up a heavy dose of *ss kicking (cough, cough...get on that Megan Curd). There is death, unfortunately all is fair in love and war for Megan's books so prepare that box of tissues! Finally there is the most epic cliff hanger, to the point where I emailed Megan and asked her to change it because lets face it my little girl heart needs to know how it ends, what happens to Avery and Jaxon!!!!!! So I attempt to patiently await book three, which is slow and agonizing, maybe I could bribe her with Starbucks? In conclusion, go read this book and Steel Lily, they are amazing!

A fantastic sequel to Steel Lily. This is one of my favourite series - and now I have to wait for the next one!!!

I'll try to be constructive rather than just gush, but my favourite part of these books are the character. Avery, Jaxon, Sari, Alice... and now with Vince thrown into the mix. Their constantly full of witty banter, yet at the same time capable of powerful emotions. They are all unique, yet the fit together as a great team. Dana was a great addition to the story, although she said 'baby girl/boy' a little too much, and it got a bit overrated (and I picked up her big reveal pretty much straight away), but I liked the layer of adult she bought to the table.

So as much as I loved this, there were a few flaws, and it probably could have undergone another round of editing. There were a few logic jumps to make the plot fit together, and a couple of continuity issues (like when Avery and Vince get into his Dad's office, and Avery's remembering when she was there with Jaxon, and then the next day she goes back, and is like "last time I was here, it was with Jaxon...". Didn't make sense).

And the ending was devastation, though I admit I saw it coming from a while back. The Legs/Erin twist thought - big surprise!

And easy 5/5, and I want the next one - now!

Iron Pendulum was an okay read, but there was times where it dragged.

I really liked the characters the first time i read Steel Lily, but when i reread it prior to reading this, i didn't like them as much.
Unfortunately, the same goes for this one. I just couldn't warm to them enough to like them as much as i did before.

There was one character that drove me up the wall - Dana. She said "Baby girl" about five times in two pages, and then kept saying either "Baby girl", "Baby boy", "Baby" or "Child" throughout the book. It gets really annoying after the tenth time!

The last 15% was good, but the rest of it was quite slow, so there was a few times where i felt bored.

Overall, An okay read, but not as good as the first installment.

This series is a total must-read! Having the pleasure to read it, wow!

Megan Curd really did great job with the characters and even though I would get sometimes confused with all the different characters (maybe it is just me who is really slow with remembering different characters), it was magnificent!

Another thing I LOVED was the cover. The title is eye catching and the colors mix smoothly. We are told not to judge a book by its cover, but we do. And let’s face it, this book was great inside and out!

Iron Pendulum is one of those books where you can discuss and fangirl over any day! Everyone will be adding Jaxon to their “Book Boyfriend List”! I know I will!

Another thing I really liked was the originality. I have not read any other story as original as this one, hands down. Megan Curd really did a great job imagining the characters, places, and events. Speaking of plots, Megan really brought the conflict on. I find it hard, if writing a series, to make it more exciting than the first book, but she made it happen! She brought on a new story that really went with the first book, but did not seem so boring.

Holy heck! This book was an explosive thrill ride from page one until the very end. Fast-paced, action-packed and filled with intrigue, betrayal, and heartache.

Unfortunately, I haven't read book 1, but I didn't feel completely lost when reading this book. There were times when I wondered what had happened in the first book, and I think I'm going to have to give it a read, even if it's just to be taken on another exciting journey with these characters.

Curd has created an interesting post apocalyptic world with fascinating characters. Even the evil guys were interesting to get to know. A complex web, woven with lies and corruption, there was never a dull moment, only many edge-of-my-seat, gasping-for-breath moments. Just as I thought I'd wrapped my head around what was going on in Dome Four, another curveball was thrown my way and the deeper into the story I got the darker it became.

This book had it all, and will appeal to a wide audience. Whether you're looking for kickass characters, a bit of romance, or just enjoy a great Steampunk Dystopian read, this is the one for you.

Like any great trilogy, the second act things take a decided turn for the worse as our plucky band of characters takes its lumps, bruises, and losses.

Keeping on par with the twists of Steel Lily, Iron Pendulum doesn’t come up short! Large portions of this book only make true sense in hindsight. I’m yelling at these characters while I’m reading, “What are you doing?! Why would you do that!?”and so on. But then you get to that moment when you really understand what’s been going on under your nose the whole time and you go “OOH! That’s WTH was going on!!” and then you stop and mop up your brain after it’s been blown.

So grab your popcorn, a box of tissues, and settle into a great continuation of the series that will leave you wishing your time machine wasn’t in the shop so you could jump forward when book 3 is released.

It took a little getting back into the novel and you definitely need to read Steel Lily before picking up the second book in the series. Steel Lily happens to be one of my favorite indie novels, so I was incredibly excited when I heard Iron Pendulum was going to be released. The second novel in the series, Iron Pendulum was fast paced and filled with lots of action and adventure. Megan Curd did well introducing us to new characters while still putting plenty of focus on the characters we already know and love. Her writing is smooth and easy to follow. Overall I give Iron Pendulum 4 stars.

Iron Pendulum is just as good as the first book in this series. Megan Curd did an amazing job once again writing this book. Starting off right where Steel Lily left off with all the same great characters with lots of twists, turns, action and suspense this book does not disappoint. Iron Pendulum is a definite must read for anyone that has already started this series or if they are looking to start reading a great steampunk dystopian series.
