Here I am for my weekly review of gay pornography! Just call me the Roger Ebert of professional homosexual erotica critique at this point, because my book page is starting to look downright filthy. It’s probably weird to a lot of people how whenever I’m reviewing a book like this that I don’t even talk about whether or not I find them super sexy or whatever, and instead I analyze them as if I writing an in-depth essay, but the reason for that is because… well, because it’s kind of awkward for me to sit here and talk about how hot I think the book about a guy losing a bet and getting spanked until he explodes is! Besides, I wouldn’t be reviewing this and rating it the way I did if I didn’t find it hot, it's a given, I tell you! I don’t know, I guess it would be easier if I just leaned into it, huh? Because it’s not every day where the song lyrics I use at the top of my reviews are this literal (like, that's exactly what happens in this book!), but then again, it’s also not every day where a book's title is just spelling out the events of the novel either. Nuance and literary interpretation are overrated anyway. So yeah, Loser Takes All is an oddly heartwarming and competently written story about a man named Tad who loses a bet and then gets spanked by some guy named Scott, who appears out of nowhere like the gay Anton Chigurh whose sole mission is to make Tad skeet skeet skeet like a water hose. Sorry for that mental image. Seriously though, I’m not leaving anything out, that’s all there is to it! Sexual awakening by paddle and sex swing, the end. Now, I know what you’re thinking, the name “Tad” is an incredibly silly name and it’s going to take some getting used to if we ever plan on taking this Upending Tad series seriously. It makes the books sound more like a coming of age series rather than just… pure man on man action, doesn't it? I just think it’s funny because this story is so porn-coded that Tad’s name might as well have just been something more on the nose! I don't know, the name “Jack Offman” is speaking to me right now, because damn, this guy was really able to just get off in any situation! At first, Loser Takes All almost reads more like a horror novel, with the entire situation of this short story being hella sketchy, and I don’t really know how Tad could be horny in such a situation, let alone anyone. It reminds me of those horny mods people use in the newer Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 where they change it so Leon is walking around naked, and it’s like… dude, you’re killing zombies with your thang hanging out! Put that thang away! I’m just saying, Tad has the survival instincts of a horror movie protagonist. I'm reminded of that movie Barbarian, where the whole movie is all about how specific situations that are obviously frightening for women aren’t seen as such by the men in their lives.
Creepy ass Bill Skarsgård and a murder dungeon might sound off obvious warning signals for Tess, but don't do the same for dickwad Justin Long. Sorry, I just like that movie, and if I keep talking about it, then my book page will just become one of those endless YouTube channels that review horror movies. I need to stay in my lane; gay ass books! My point here is that even though it worked out in the end, maybe Tad shouldn’t go around follow nefarious looking frat boys and go wandering into any old dark basements without a back-up plan. All getting dicked down in the room where they kill Joe Pesci in Goodfellas and shit. Get some standards Tad! Anyway, I actually liked this book the longer it went on, because the narrative obviously isn’t interested in exploring things like “stranger danger” and “listening to your gut,” so by the time it just threw all the realism out the window and went full porno mode, the story instantly became more tolerable. Otherwise, I’ve probably already talked about my aversion to frats in general, but the truth is that I find the idea of them so ridiculous that they almost seem entirely fictional to me. In my mind, “frat boys” exist in on the fantasy shelf right next to creatures like unicorns or Fae! But who knows, maybe it’s all just a coping mechanism because of the fact that I simply cannot take any story about “alpha males” seriously. At all! They’re just so silly to me. The way they're always focusing on “male performance” and “brotherhood” and whatever, it’s no wonder frats are a popular setting for gay erotica! So here’s the thing, I’ve been watching a lot of those commentator YouTubers who go super in-depth on all the different little alpha male subcultures on TikTok or wherever they’re currently infesting… and let me tell you, it’s been a trip! The funniest part for me is that all the dudes who consider themselves super alpha or sigma or whatever-the-fuck always seem to have an aversion to drinking tap water or water through a filter, but instead strictly drink very specific brands of bottled water. Like, isn’t that an oddly specific peculiarity? Nothing says "manly man" like a man who's scared to drink water! It’s a common theme with all of them, like they’ve listened to too much of those Alex Jones, Joe Rogan types, and now they think that if they drink normal water then they’ll turn gay or some weird shit like that. It’s bizarre! Anyway, I think I’ve gotten off track, because maybe the reason why I’m able to stomach books like Loser Takes All featuring the same kind of insufferable guy that exists in abundance in real life is because these stories explore my favorite kind of fantasy trope of all; a man in touch with his emotions!

This is a chapter, not a novella/short story.
DIRTY and KINKY for sure, but I prefer my porn WITH plot, or better yet, plot with a side of porn. As the title suggests, this is EROTICA, not romance.
I prefer more feels and at least some relationship development. The setup for Scott and Tad doing the scene was lame and had an element of dub-con.
Rating as erotica: 4 stars (hot, salacious, and kinky as fuck)
Rating overall: 2 stars (no character development at all)

3.5 Out of the Box Stars
Ok. Here’s the deal. I don't like bdsm. It really does nothing for me, and yet, admittedly there’s been a few stories that incorporate such and at times I’ve been moved or titillated or both.
Based on my dear friend Meags’s recommendation who knows my particular proclivities well, I had to check this out because said bestie wouldn’t steer me wrong.
Now granted, the initial setup is totally implausible and unrealistic, where Tad finds himself in a stranger’s basement ready to be flogged. It’s either that or face a beating by 3 jocks who he lost a bet to. This guy, like most of us, is pretty vanilla, and he has no clue as to what’s in store for him.

Incredibly hot PWP! 🔥🔥🔥 The same things kept being said over and over I was like we get it! Scott must have called Tad 'shy boy' and made a reference to him being shy 3 billion times😂 And *I* must have rolled my eyes each time. I was so disappointed in this story. It did not deserve the one star I am forced to give it. I read about a third and skimmed the rest just to try and find where it got better. It didn't. No redeeming social values and no heat. The sex play was described but there was no heat between the two MCs.
No matter how Tad (preppy name) felt during and at the end, this was still a forced encounter where his acceptance was based on an unacceptable choice. Remember this is a college kid.
Hell, he had to do this. It was either that or suffer two broken arms and a caved in nose. Yeah, the crew-cut jerkoffs made that pretty clear after they'd hustled him at the fraternity party a few blocks over...

This was a great audiobook! The writing was wonderful, and kept me anxious to find out what would happen next; and the narration was fantastic. This was a great pairing of an author I admire and a narrator who is a favorite. I'm definitely going to listen to the rest of the series! The characters of Scott and Tad were fun to get to know, even in the awkward situation they were in.

The longest 60 pages I have ever read. 😵 It was basically one long, drawn-out sex scene, which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing if it hadn’t been so horribly written, boring and repetitive. The exact opposite of what I wanted, which was quick and dirty, sexy bdsm smut. I started highlighting after the first 15 pages or so, because this was just ridiculous.

Did I get a good feel for the characters? No.

4.5 star Review by The Blogger Girls.
Well, this was just a nice little hot surprise breath of fresh air. I wasn’t too sure what to expect, but I was very pleasantly surprised.
Tad is in a bad situation – he either pays up his debt with a beating by the jocks or takes his chances with the flogger. He reluctantly takes the flogger option. The story quickly moves to Tad meeting Scott (said floggerer). Right off the bat, I loved each of these guys. The attitude, snark and banter were awesome. I really enjoyed the dialog throughout, and it was consistent from beginning to end.
So, Tad is straight up to this point. Scott is clearly not. Scott is a Dom, although he doesn’t really practice it seriously, unlike his roommate who is a professional. Tad shows a lot of uncertainty about a lot of things, but Scott is good about giving him options. Once these two get started, it is non-stop hotness. Tad goes in believing he will just have to endure a basic flogging, but Scott has an entirely different plan and thoroughly enjoys putting it into effect, piece by piece.
This entire story is basically one big scene, but I never felt as though that was the case. At the end, Tad was still just as unsure of what he had done and how he felt during and after, as when he walked in the door. The question is, will he be able to stay away or will be be drawn back to Scott wanting to explore things further?
This was a fabulous first story from Ms. Knight, and, halfway through, I already didn’t want it to end. I wanted to get to know these guys better, see more of their interactions, hear more of their bantering dialog. I loved the writing style as well. It all flowed nicely and moved along at a very comfortable pace. I also loved that this was not a typical BDSM story with the usual master/sir thing going on, yet it had just the right amount of other aspects. What we did get was erotic and smexy and just all-around hotness. I was so happy to see this was part of a series and that there’s more to come with these guys.
