What happens when a bad-boy celebrity rocker meets a small-town bestselling novelist? Find out in this first book in the sizzling new True series by Liora Blake!
While most novelists would consider jetting off to Hollywood for a TV interview rather exciting, small-town Montana writer Kate Mosely finds it all a bit exhausting. After losing her husband in a car accident where she was behind the wheel, Kate has finally found her bearings in the world again, rebuilding a simple but stable life. And even if that means a lot of lonely nights watching old movies and quiet days writing obituaries for her hometown newspaper, Kate’s not sure she’s ready for her life to change—again.
Until she shares the stage—and a whole heap of carnal gazes—with rock star Trevor “Trax” Jenkins. Despite his intimidating on-stage bravado, underneath it Kate discovers a man with a Rilke poem tattooed on his arm, an appreciation for cronuts, and a snarky wit that matches her own.
As she and Trevor explore their heated chemistry, the scarred parts of Kate’s heart begin to heal, making room for a love so passionate it makes her want long-forgotten things equal parts naughty, heart-swelling, and joyful. But when a searing exposé in a trashy gossip magazine sends Kate running, will it threaten their chances at forever?

TEXTING
Do I need to specifically state that I'm asking you a question? Again, are you aware that a baby whitetail fawn has approximately 300 spots?
(…)
No. I was not aware of this important factoid. And, I live in Montana, where the deer and the antelope play. This begs the question, why do you know this information? You live in LA, where deers only exist as mythical creatures in the minds of small imaginative children, right?
I'm researching Montana.
(…)
Is there a reason I'm always the text initiator in this relationship? Why do I feel like I'm chasing your ass around? Not that I really have any issue with chasing that ass around.
(…)
I would prefer if you only sent me written correspondence. On fine linen paper using a quill pen. Using words like "anon" and "doth." These letters should have a wax seal of your family crest and be delivered via carrier pigeon.
Anon, I doth not have a family crest. We're a white-trash-in-the-projects kind of family. Do prison tattoos count?
Not really. I promise to text you something random at some point. I wouldn't want you feeling like you're chasing me around. I think we both know you can catch me.
You bet that sweet little ass I can.
^^^^^^^^^^^^quotes taken from the first third of True North
************************************************* First third 4 stars Second third 3 to 3.5 stars Last third…I don't know how to rate it because I totally hated the part between 87% and 94%. I only skimmed the ending. Anyway, overall rating 3 stars. *************************************************
Kate has been widowed for the past three years. She's living a rather secluded and lonely life as a writer in a smalltown in Montana. When her bustling agent calls her to tell her that she's going to be on a TV show in LA, Kate isn't really enthusiastic. Once arrived though, she meets a very attractive blond guy at the TV studio. She's sure she should know him but can't seem the get a grasp on his name. When Kate is aware who the pretty face is, she has a hard time to resist his charm.
Well. I feel a bit torn...
After a great first third, and some really alluring build-up, the air was kind of out for me. Don't get me wrong. I did like the book as a whole and I felt entertained for an extensive part of the story but it didn't really rock my world. I think the author didn't exploit the story's full potential, it's as simple as that.
I guess one of my biggest issues was the lack of an exciting rock star ambiance. This is a rock star story, folks. Therefore I do expect several thrilling performances on stage. I want and need that intense atmosphere, all those gosebump-inducing feelz that would make myself drift along with the amazing music. And that's exactly what I didn't get with Trevor's and Kate's story. The performances were few and far between and not really compelling, just too perfunctory.
With a long jump in my direction, he ends the song and lands on his toes right in front of me. Beaming, he shoots me an enormous grin and then winks at me. I believe I quite possibly experience a small orgasm. Then off he goes, leaving me standing there completely, absurdly enamored.
I'm sorry but that's just unoriginal, awkward and kind of flat.
I liked Trevor. He's sweet and fun and all that. He is no douchebag at all. As I see it, True North reads more like a cute rom-com sprinkled with a few musical notes than a profound and heady rock star story. Even though both MCs did have some personal baggage to lug around, it didn't have enough depth, IMO. In addition, any attempt at a great character development seemed to be rendered void once they started to get it on all the time. I always plead the case of less is more. Give me a couple hot and well-written smexy scenes and more character and story development and I'm a very happy reader. Oh, and no stupid drama. Thank you very much.
While I liked Trevor very much, Kate annoyed me several times. I was close to yelling an expletive when she jumped to conclusions (I should have gotten used to it by now, right?), but thankfully that was such a short interlude and Trevor could clear the air stat which somewhat appeased me. Also, I get it that women want to be independent. However, Kate's stubbornness was aggravating. I was lucky that Trevor made up for Kate's behavior.
Other minor quibbles
The repetitiveness
86 x smile, smiles, 76 x grin, grins, grinning 15 x smirk, smirks, smirking
Now, you will tell me that 15 smirks aren't all that much. But given the fact that I felt irritated by all those grins and smiles, the smirks just amplified my impression of a repetitive feel.
Plus, let's not forget the winking and lip biting. *eye roll*
Question What's up with the term brewing? The author made use of that word several times. Feelings, melancholy, tension, a creative side and even a plan of some sort were brewing. An example:
Under the covers again, I lie motionless listening to him brush his teeth, staring up at the ceiling and trying to quell the wretched feelings brewing in my chest.
Another example:
But a mild melancholy is brewing inside me, so staring…
Another fact is that the book could have benefited from better proofreading/editing. I didn't count the mistakes but there were more than a few.
Shaking my head, I give him small smile.
The stance, my back arching slightly, means his hands come immediately to my knead my breasts and tease my nipples into taut lengths.
Trevor takes deep breath and then exhales slowly.
The book was kind of cute but all the cuteness went hand in hand with an additional generous touch of sap and cheese, especially during the second half.
A major issue It seems to me that we can't have a story without OTT drama. Drama caused by a "heroine". When Kate and Baba…well, Baba is annoyed. Annoyance doesn't even begin to cover it, TBH. I ain't got no patience for that kind of crap.
All in all a nice, light and entertaining read (if I could extinguish the last 13% I'd feel better) and I'm pretty sure that this book will be loved by many readers. Though, as for me, True North didn't nearly come close to my favorite and really stellar rock star stories Louder Than Love and How to Kill a Rock Star. This being said, I'd like to check out the second installment.

This is such a surprisingly great read from Liora Blake's debut novel. Honestly, this woman can write better than some season authors. I think I found one of my favorite subgenre, the non-trashy kind of rockstar romance. Who says rockstar needs to be a bad boy or a manwhore.
Trevor Jenkins aka Trax, the rockstar who had been in the field for 10 years. In the beginning, the way Liora Blake describe his get-up, his songs and his background, it makes me think she wrote Trax based on Eminem. Maybe due to the fact that he is the only white singer I know who sing trashy songs and grew up in the ghetto.
Kate Mosely, a widow and a novelist from small town Montana. During one of her promotional trip to LA, she met Trevor and they not only shared a stage, but an instant attraction towards each other. Being a country girl herself, Kate didn't realize Trevor is in fact a big deal rockstar.
After a dinner date and Kate headed back to her country home, what follow was a series of text messages with random factoid and phone calls from sweet Trevor. Oh yes, this guy was all about sweet gesture and is fun reading about a hero doing some normal chasing for once. There are non of those crazy insta-lust and OTT possessiveness and 'You're mine!' declaration. Once a while, I do appreciate some normal in my read.
Kate like Trevor, the guy who loves cronuts and crazy about mountain bike, but felt totally intimidated by Trax, the big star. What is he doing with her? I think I get why Kate was acting all lackluster with Trevor's advance because she just don't think he was being serious. But is funny to see Trevor attempt in old English.
"Anon, woman! What do I have to do, hire a skywriter? Anon! Trevor doth like Kate!"
This is a story about opposite attract and also find love again. Kate lost her husband 3 years ago and had been learning to move on with her life. Although she still misses him, she is giving herself a chance to love again. She is a country girl that lives a mundane life writing and some times taking care of her neighbor ranch. While Trevor is living his high life in LA and touring all around. Can they really make it work?
I love seeing how they both try to be part of each other lives. Trevor's struggle to even reach her doorstep for a surprise visit was a scene to behold. Poor guy. And of course, Kate had to learn how to deal with dating a guy who had paparazzi ambushing him at every corner.
"Christ, tell me what I have to do to prove to you that you're my entire fucking world. I'll do it. I don't know how many ways I can say it, how many things I need to do to show it. I'm yours, Mosely." ~ Trevor
"I remembered where I belong. I got off course for a second, but I found my way again and that brought me home. To you." ~ Kate
True North is the kind of feel good romance book that light up your day, infused with some healthy dose of humor that make you laugh, great sex that left you panting for more and a sweet hero that you want to lick him all over.
This was the best surprise read of my year so far!! Also, if I am not mistaken, this is Liora Blake’s first book. Well, if this is what she does with a first book I can't wait to see where she goes from here. I loved it. The flow of the story and the writing is the kind I enjoy getting lost in. Even when I did put it down, all I could do was think about it ‘til I could pick it up again.
Small town girl and widow, Kate Mosely is in California to promote her latest book. She doesn’t really want to be there, but decides she that will just take it as it comes and try to enjoy the ride. Kate is a down to earth, smart, put together kind of a gal. So when an entourage of guys and a vaguely familiar celeb enters the green room of the talk show she’s been scheduled for, Kate isn’t fazed. What harm is a little flirt when she will be heading back home to Montana and will never see any of these people again?
The thing is, there seemed to be a connection while sharing the couch of this late night talk show. Did the vaguely familiar rapper just blush? Did she feel something sizzle between them? No way. Right?
For whatever reason, True North spoke to me. I am still smiling over the rapper and the writer. I loved the grown up, yet sexy feel to this read. The journey of self discovery and the unwavering love of a tabloid laden guy with nothing left to prove.
It’s moving, spellbinding and at times laugh-out-loud funny. I can’t wait to read what come next in the series!
3.5 stars for this rock star romance. It was better than many others, and for most of the book it was 4 stars, but the ending wasn't very well done IMO so sadly it slipped back to 3.5. Now I'm not sure about trying the rest of the series. I had such high hopes, too!
Kate is a lonely Montana widow still struggling with grief over the sudden death of the love of her life a few years ago. She has written a successful book and goes to LA to promote it on a talk show. On set she meets Trevor (stage name 'Trax' - ugh!) whose band is performing on the show that day. They click immediately, but it feels real, not like the stupid instalust presented in so many lame books. The writer does their first meeting well.
Kate and Trevor are drawn together, and I really enjoyed the growth of their relationship. Kate is reluctantly but inevitably moving on in her life after her husband's death. Trevor has finally grown up, after a crazy few years when he was young, rich, and with sudden success going to his head after growing up poor in the projects. He is obviously a talented performer, and has a huge fan and groupie following. But now he is ready for a real relationship. He and Kate fall in love, and this whole section of the book was very enjoyable, although there may have been a couple too many sex scenes. (Huh - I don't often write that phrase!)
But as this (fairly short) book drew to its conclusion, it seemed as if the writer didn't quite know how to finish her story effectively. There was a sudden plot development that had me rolling my eyes a little at Kate's over-reaction. It all seemed a bit awkward and rushed before the rather sudden HEA. So disappointing, as till then I'd really liked the book. I feel as if this plot development could have worked if the writer had taken her time more and convinced us better about the reasons for Kate's reaction. I just didn't buy it.
But in spite of that gripe, and the overdoing it a little on the amount of time Kate and Trevor spent in bed together, I did enjoy the book overall. The characters seemed real, which is a key for me in enjoying a book. Trevor's character actually reminded me a little of the gorgeous Shawn from Nia Forrester's Commitment, but not as well depicted. Forrester is a more accomplished writer. Hmmm. Come to think of it, there are some plot similarities between the two books as well. Oh well, apart from Trevor reminding me a little of Shawn, they did feel like very different books. And of course Kate is totally different from Riley. Anyway, this one was a decent read, and I will consider reading more of Ms Blake's books.
Every once in a while, a book comes along that’s a true standout. One that’s special enough to consume my every thought and make me wish the story would never end. A case of opposites attract, Trevor and Kate’s story was exactly that. Their connection was undeniable, intense and full of pretty great banter.
Kate is a country girl at heart. She still calls the small Montana town she grew up in home. She lost her husband three years ago and she’s been consumed with guilt and regret ever since. Her book, which has become a best seller, lands her a guest appearance on a late-night talk show in L.A.
The infamous, Trax also happens to be appearing on the show the same night. Described as a thug, he was more Eminem in my eyes, than any other rockstar I could conjure up. He’s been living the lifestyle for years, touring, screwing groupies and getting arrested. He’s garnered quite a reputation for himself. But underneath the Trax persona, is Trevor. The real, honest, genuine, and often vulnerable guy. Like Kate, it was impossible for me not to fall for him.
It’s in the green room of the late-night show that Kate and Trevor meet for the first time. I thought it was cute that Kate really had no idea who he was. From first glance, there’s a connection and when they end up on stage together, it turns into shameless flirting. He tracks down her number and takes her to dinner, which changes everything for both of them.
“I wanted to make sure I got under your skin, because I wanted you to be as deep into me as I was into you.”
There was something so different about Trevor and I couldn’t get enough of him. I think it was his honesty and willingness to be vulnerable with Kate. He always told her exactly what he wanted and wasn’t afraid to give chase the few times she was scared off or second guessing herself. And to top it off, he was a bad boy with a huge heart. Who doesn't love a bad boy?
“I’ve never loved a woman before. Not like this. Only you.”
To say Trevor and Kate were HOT together is an understatement. There aren’t adequate words to describe the intensity and deep connection they shared. Throughout the whole book, I found myself laughing, smiling or swooning at the things they would say to each other. That’s what makes a story great in my eyes. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
“Will you let me love you forever, Kate?”

True North is my first book by this author. Always fun to get a bad boy rock star themed storyline. And this one was particularly endearing with a sexy balance. Trax was multi-dimensional and not so bad when you looked beneath his outer layer. Kate brought a solid and strong woman to the female lead character. Both characters were well-developed with lots of fabulously written banter and wit, with just the right amount of realistically pronounced angst.
This one was fun-to-read and definitely motivates my desire to seek out the next installment in Blake's new "True" series.
Really well done romance about a punk/rapper LA hero and a novelist/widow Montana heroine. The author makes their romance very believable. And so sexy. It felt like a fresh/different read too. Highly rec.
Just the right amount of snark, emotion, smarts, and sweetness! Loved the author heroine and mountain biker/ rap artist hero, and the believable Montana/LA settings. Looking forward to the next book in this rock n' roll romance series.
Favorite Quote: “I remembered where I belong. I got off course for a second, but I found my way again and that brought me home. To you.”
Best selling novelist Kate Mosley chose to grieve and heal in private after a car accident claimed her husband’s life. When her publisher set ups a series of talk show appearances to revive her career, Kate is forced to back into the public eye and to relive all the gossip that surrounded her husband’s death and the part she played in it. Wanting to get it done and over with, she is unprepared for the force of attraction she feels when she meets Trevor Jenkins, lead singer of the popular rock group-Trax. Expecting the typical rock star attitude, Kate is surprised to see Trevor is a down to earth man who appeals to her on multiple levels.
Trevor Jenkins has struggled and clawed his way from poverty to stardom and has spent years enjoying the fruits of his success but finds himself now looking to settle down for the next chapter of his life. Kate Mosley looks to be a huge part of his future but like him, has some past tragedies that need addressing before they can both move forward.
As Kate and Trevor explore the raging chemistry that exists between them, Kate’s broken heart begins to heal, showing her that love can come to a person twice in life. But when a trashy tabloid exposes all her secrets and makes some damaging assumptions, taking Kate back to the darkest hour in her life, will she stay and fight for her new life or will she run away and destroy everything they have built?
True North is a delightfully sexy, funny, and bittersweet romance contemporary about a couple for whom a chance meeting spells another chance at true love for a grieving widow. Liora Blake’s debut is a shining jewel in an otherwise overly saturated trope that promotes over the top emotional baggage and immature protagonists whose extreme sexual escapades overshadow the storyline. Blake has an enticing voice that lends credence and realism to her characters and their actions. Both protagonists (though the story is told in the first person from the heroine’s POV) are fleshed out; Blake expertly reveals their flaws and strengths with clarity and conviction. Strong writing and a smooth unfolding had me instantly invested in the story by the first chapter.
“Kate my darling, we are about to make some real money.” “Are we going to start smuggling drugs in my books?”
Your heart will hurt for Kate though she doesn’t inspire pity. She is a delicious combination of snark and strength that sheaths a fragile vulnerability that will take a strong and patient person to discover. Having been the one who was driving the car when her husband died, Kate carries a lot of guilt. It was an accident but the tabloids ripped her apart and she has never forgiven them or herself. Having Trevor’s attention is both gratifying and scary. She doesn’t see why he would be attracted to her; with his millions and looks he could have anyone. She also fears her attraction to him; feeling as though she is betraying the love she felt for her husband by feeling something much deeper for someone else.
Even nearly three years later, I miss his body in a way that weakens my breath
Luckily for her, Trevor is one of the most patient heroes I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Sweet, sexy, funny, and forthright, he fights for her both sexually and emotionally. Every roadblock she places in front of them, and she puts up quite a few to my dismay at times, he pushes against them, using any means necessary to strengthen their connection. Trevor reminded me a little of Eminem with his trailer park backstory, harsh upbringing, and misogyny song lyrics. An angry young man setting out to destroy the world is thrust into the limelight where his youthful mistakes turn around to create a thoughtful well adjusted adult.
“Christ, tell me what I have to do to prove to you that you’re my entire fucking world. I’ll do it. I don’t know how many ways I can say it, how many things I need to do to show it. I’m yours, Mosely.”
Trevor and Kate’s romance is fraught with laughter and some heartfelt moments as they attempt a long distance relationship. I loved Trevor’s “chasing” of Kate. His text messages and gifts are thoughtful, showing his desire to get to know her better. Once they cross the point of no return, their love scenes blaze across the pages. Trevor has a dirty mouth and he knows how to use it. *wink*
“God, you’re so ready. You love this, don’t you? Acting like a filthy groupie. Fuck, I love that it made you crazy, baby.”
He doesn’t let up as he growls at me, continuing to slam into me over and over again. I groan out an affirmation and rotate my hips in response to his thrusts.
“Tell me how much you wanted it. How bad my sexy, sweet good girl wanted this.”
My answer comes out garbled, broken up by moans and screams. I manage to stutter out, “I wanted it in the dressing room. I wanted it all night watching you onstage. I needed it.”
“Yeah? Did you think it would be this good? A rock star fucking you this hard?”
A kaleidoscope of vivacious and interesting secondary characters add love, humor, and advice to the mix from an exuberant personal stylist to flirtatious band members. Family plays a strong role as shown when Kate and Trevor’s respective family members come out swinging when they think their loved ones are being hurt or taken advantage of. Trevor’s mom suspiciousness is well warranted as is Kate’s sister’s over-protectiveness.
The book does slow down a little in the last half as Kate tries to figure out what she really wants. The rehashing of her feelings and insecurities does get monotonous because it recycles the same issues over and over with no real advancement. Even though I knew she wasn’t doing it on purpose, at times I felt she was stringing Trevor along. It takes a predictable conflict to shock her out of her endless loop and move forward.
True North surprised me in the best of ways. I expected the usual fare and received something fans of opposites attract and second chance romances will adore the sweet, slow, and humor journey to true love as a woman learns how to love again with a man whose only want is to be her one and only. I look forward to book two, True Devotion, which is the story of Simon (Trevor’s band mate) and Trevor’s sister, Devon. Book two releases June 22, 2015.

So what happens when small-town bestselling writer meets bad boy celebrity rock star? Well In Liora Blake's debut book, she introduces us to Kate Moseley and Trevor "Trax" Jenkins. Two people living in different states. One is a country girl at heart and one is living the Hollywood celebrity limelight. So when their paths cross, will this bad boy rocker show Kate that he is the one guy who will rock her world? Or will Kate's past and insecurities ruin their chance of a HEA?
In this debut book, Ms. Liora was able to keep her readers engage through out the story-line. Though this story was told in only one POV, I loved that we are given the heroine's perspective. The raw emotions and conflict that runs through Kate's head was totally understandable because she was wondering why this celebrity would want to get to know a widow from Montana but Trevor makes an amazing hero showing that behind the bad boy persona lies a true gentleman, who truly wants Kate. Ms. Liora does a fabulous job showcasing that second chances do exist and in this case, Kate's second chance at love is her own personal bad boy rock star.
True North is a fun, sweet, sexy contemporary romance that reminds us all to follow our hearts and second chances do exist. The character development was at an excellent pace. The drama/angst was an understandable given Kate's past of losing her husband. So as a reader, I could understand her pain and questioning her relationship with Trevor. Overall, this book was a fun, light and enjoyable read. I look forward on what's in store for this series.
I was immediately captured by the lilt in the writing as I began the book. The tone and style are captivating.
This is a first person rock star romance but with a quality of the writing that lifts it out of the tedium that can bog down that sub genre and makes you settle in for a good story.
The start of the novel is just excellent. Blake does a wonderful job creating the character of the heroine who is all ache and snark. The first meeting with the hero is divine.
The hero's emotional bravery and well as bone deep sexiness holds its appeal through out the story.
The leads are both flawed but humanly and understandably so.
It is a good book and wonderful first in the series.
The sexy times are burning hot. However, the physical overwhelms the development of the characters in places. The conversation falls off and that is sad because it was such a great aspect of the romance earlier in the novel. The depth of the hero isn't as well explored and the closing comes a bit too fast after the heroine's freak out which we can see coming for many chapters.
There are so many moments in this book I adored. I am very excited about getting the heroine's sister's story which isn't the next book but one I hope is come.
This romance is a bit of a treasure and the writer has such talent.
I was given this book for my honest review. So, there you have it!

3.5 WWKD Stars
Kate Mosley lost her husband a few years ago in a terrible car accident. Since that time she's written a best seller, which sometimes requires her to leave her small town in Montana to pitch the book, which is also being made into a film. This time Kate is off to California to do a night time talk show. Decked out in the clothing picked for her by Kellan the stylist, she meets a sexy rock star notorious for his dirty and harsh lyrics. Although she knows he's someone famous, she doesn't quite recognize who he is until she asks.
Trevor Jenkins aka "Trax" has been a successful rock star for many years. He's done all the groupies, he's played around with drugs and alcohol. But the thing that knocks him on his ass is the "sexy librarian" author who preceeds him on the late night talk show they are both doing. When sparks fly on the set of the show, Trevor knows he can't let this woman go without getting to know her better.
With her husbands death still haunting her, will Kate be able to see that she has a second chance at love? Will Trevor be able to convince Kate that his hard partying days are over and that he really wants a place in her life?
With a cast of hilarious characters like Simon, Trevor's guitar player, Kellan the stylist and Kate's crotchety agent, Stephen King, there were a lot of moments when I was laughing so hard.
Liora is great with the snarking comments that make you laugh and want to highlight the entire dialogue in the book..
I agree with Baba (fellow Goodreads reviewer) on a large portion of her review. The first third, drew me in completely and I was totally enamored with the book and the characters of Trevor aka Trax and Kate. By the second third, I still enjoyed them and the witty banter didn't hurt. Where I differ with Baba is that she really didn't like the last third of the book. I didn't love it, but didn't think it was terrible. I felt it was rushed as well as I felt that Kate's little meltdown wasn't really warranted. But what do I know, I've never had my life spun out in the tabloids for everyone to read. I just wanted a little more, because I didn't think the issues were so insurmountable. But I am interested in reading the rest of the series.
So I'm off to read the next installment, which is why the full review will have to wait until tomorrow. I'm eager to dive in.
You can imagine that as a book blogger I read a lot. I average a book a day, mostly I read to review, but others are just books that spark my interest. I can pretty much pick the wheat from the chaff. I will give you a little insight into the genre of contemporary romance, some authors are good, some authors are mediocre, and some are outstanding. Some authors start out outstanding and because of either pressure or maybe the only had one book in them they end up being mediocre. I sometimes blame their lack of foresight, as they bang out their other books, thinking that they can bang out books like an assembly line not something that is truly meant to be art. What a lot of books are becoming is assembly line produced products meant to keep their “reader/fans” happy. What ends up is a poorly written book, that has rehashed plots and characters. Then an author like Liora Blake makes her debut entry into literature with True North, and her competition should set up and take notice. Mediocre writing in competition to Blake’s book will make those assembly line novels seem pedestrian in comparison. Those undistinguished books that are cluttering up the romance genre need to take notice; as a new romance writer is on the scene and who shockingly writes an entire book, not just hot sex scenes. (It should be noted this reviewer does like a hot sex scene, but she does need more than sex to keep her engine puttering along.)
Liora Blake’s True North, is a tale of rock star Trevor ‘Trax’ Jenkins and novelist ‘Kate Mosely worlds colliding. Yes, the plot isn't new; but what makes this book fresh, witty, and charming is that the way the material is handled is brilliant. Neither of the main characters are virgins. They are both pushing thirty. OMG, that is so freaking OLD. (It should be noted that this reviewer is forty nine so, thirty seems like young folk to her) Lately in the book world if the characters can buy beer legally no one wants to read it. Or god forbid the people have had lives before they meet. Blake’s characters talk and act like adults and it was written in such a way that the book had me grinning throughout, as I mentioned before, the book is witty. I have read rom-coms that don’t have as many good lines in them as this book. The humor is genuine and never over the top or contrite, the dialogue and Kate’s inner monologue does not try to be funny, it actually is funny. The romance is heartwarming and genuine, as both of the characters are likable people, and I was drawn to their romance from the start. I think this is a book that honestly you have to have lived life to enjoy it. If you haven't truly lived life you may not get the book.
This book truly needs to be put on your to be read list, as those of you who read my reviews know I don’t give five stars out like beads at Mardi Gras, so know these five stars are well deserved.
This was a very quick and easy read. Lots of laugh out loud moments but also very heartfelt and sweet. Kate and Trevor were a really great couple with some amazing sexual chemistry. At times I forgot that these two were older and in their thirties. They were behaving like teenagers when it came to the sex. I guess you're never to old to be young! :) Kate is a widow just trying to find her way after the loss of her husband. My heart went out to Kate and how she struggled with his absence from her life. It's a hard thing to overcome, losing someone you connected with so well. She eventually writes a best selling novel which leads her to a talk show where she meets the very famous and sexy rock star... Trax aka Trevor. They have an instant attraction that was very entertaining and amusing. They were an unlikely match being so completely opposite in every way, but at the same time so very perfect for each other. Kate is a small town, easy living girl who lives in quiet Montana. Trevor is the big city world traveler rock musician and his world is very loud and large. Being with Trevor is a bit overwhelming and Kate struggles with her need to stay in her safe haven of Montana or take a risk at second chance love. Being in the public eye all of the time is something she will have to accept if she wants to be with this guy and she's not sure if she can handle the pressure. Trevor really is an AMAZING guy... he has a dirty past but he doesn't lie about it. He is always upfront, honest and he is ready for something real. He's at that point in life where it's time to move on from the fan girls who only want him for his fame and fortune. My favorite part of the book was when he went to great lengths to show up in small town Montana to see her. It showed a softer and very real version of him that was hard not to love. Sometimes fate brings people together, and that is how I looked at this couple. They had both traveled down difficult roads and had arrived at a sort of crossroads where it was time to take a new path. They each needed something that the other person was able provide so they could take a chance at happiness. So, they both took a risk and took the road less traveled. One of my favorite characters was definitely Kellan. He was her fashion consultant and a bit of a stinker... lol... the Fashionista/Matchmaker! He was definitely a very colorful character that provided some very entertaining comic relief. My only complaint about the story really is that I was a little put off by all of the constant sex talk. It got to be a little over the top. It seemed like every conversation they had led to that and it was a little irritating. I also did not like the way Kate just couldn't seem to find a way to communicate with Trevor. Her feeling uncomfortable with the idea of moving on was justified, but leaving him hanging in the air all of the time was not okay. I felt like she over-reacted badly in the end. She's thirty years old... she knew that was bound to happen. Shutting him out without talking to him was cruel. Thank goodness Trevor was a patient and determined man. Other than those two minor grievances, this was overall a great story with great characters and a very enjoyable read. Yes, I would definitely read something else by this author... really, really good for a debut novel.
I received a copy of this book for review from XOXO After Dark as a part of the XOXperts Street Team!
True North is the first book in this series by Liora Blake and I loved it! Small town writer meets a celebrity rock star caught my attention from the beginning. The story had its serious moments but it also had the fun teasing moments that will keep you entertained.
Living in Montana, Kate Mosely loses her husband in a tragic car crash accident while she was the one driving. After the healing process she began to write and became a bestselling writer. Kate’s agent is aware what a hit her book is and pushes her into the spotlight by doing several talk shows to speak about her book.
Trevor “Trax” Jenkins screams with charm. His band Trax is one of the performers on one of the talk shows that Kate is set to be on. From their first meeting you can tell Trevor is attracted to her and its super sweet. Trevor actively pursues Kate and she ends up learning that people are not always what they appear to be.
I really did like these two characters together and they were both well written. Trevor earned big points with me when he called his manager to get in touch with her just to spend time with Kate and get to know her. I did feel bad for Trevor at certain parts because he thought he was taking this new relationship more serious then Kate was when really she was just treading carefully which you can understand with what she has been though.
I really enjoyed the random text messages while they were apart and how Trevor surprises her in Montana. When he explains all that he had to go through to find her was hilarious. There are a lot of twists and turns and unexpected events so the story will keep you reading just so you can find out what is next to come. The one thing I didn’t really like was how Trevor’s mom was, but she ended up making up for it in the end.
I can’t wait to read the next book in the series not only to get an update on these two characters but to see what is in store for Simon. The True series will always be on my read list.
Every once in a while, you read a book that really stands out in your mind. It stays with you after you finish reading it. THIS is one of those books. Two more opposite people could not have been brought together but what a beautiful thing it was to read! Their connection and chemistry was instantaneous and jumped off the pages. They had great wit and banter and kept me entertained throughout the book. This book made me laugh and smile and just gave me an all around good feeling. It's not one to miss! This was enjoyable enough. Some of it predictable, but I liked the characters enough to read the next in the series.
What stands out for me in this one? 1 -- The characters. For me, usually, this is the "make or break" in a book. In this case, I liked our H and h quite a bit. Kate has had a hard time. She is a successful author. Her muse was the accident that took her husband from her. She has finally come through that mess and is getting things back on track and she meets - rather fantastically randomly -- Trevor. I liked Trax and I liked Trevor. I thought the author did a very nice job of weaving these two different personalities together for us to form this character.
2 -- The heavy rap music background. We didn't get much of it, but what we did get I enjoyed.
3 -- The secondary characters. They weren't terribly developed, but again, what we did get of them, I enjoyed. You could definitely tell, towards the end of the book that the author was setting up Devon and Simon's story. Very obvious, but I'll live. When I say obvious, I mean I've seen this happen more smoothly. Something to note, when you set up a series from a previous book, you want to pull the reader. Meaning, you want people to want to read a book for the characters and/or a situation. I'll read the second book, but not because of the set-up found in this one. Really just to see if this author can write an enjoyable second book. Will it be consistent to the enjoyment found here.
4 -- The cover is rather cheesy, but I kinda' like it.
Now, for stuff I thought could have been better: 1 -- The characters skimmed the surface. They could have had more depth. Their back-stories deserved that depth, but we didn't get it. It teased us.
2 -- Very low focus on secondary characters. She'd pull someone out for a minute to make a story point, but no real development. Total focus on the primary or main characters, but even they lacked depth. I could give up any depth in secondary characters, if I had the needed depth in our main characters. We don't, so I feel a big miss here.
3 -- The title really had very small play in the book. She could have so played this up and feel like she didn't. A title should really mean something. This amazing title deserved to have some focus in this book it points to.
4 -- Since I bought this one, it looks like it was picked up by a publisher forcing the price higher than it should be. The price is too high now. I would not buy it at this price. Nope. I'm betting most of those who've purchased and read it feel the same.
I had heard buzz for this book and had it on my pile for a while. I had a family trip come up that allowed me to read this -- light and fluffy. It worked, but, I don't think it deserved even half the buzz. Another one of those that .. glad I read it, but scratching my head on just how the "buzz machine" works.
Happy Reading!

First sentence: For a tiny rural town in the middle of Montana, Weck's Drug has an inexplicably vast selection of pregnancy tests.
Kate Mosely is a novelist. When she's invited to a Hollywood show to discuss her book she also meets the band and the hot lead singer Trevor “Trax” Jenkins. She notices him and he reciprocates her interest. The look they share on live TV will change their future forever.
For Kate things are not easy. She lives in Montana. She is a widow and she misses her husband terribly. The first time she feels anything is when she meets Trevor. These new feelings are exhilarating but also terrifying at the same time. She is scared of loving deeply again and Trevor has the potential to destroy her. Loosing him would be unbearable.
Trevor has been a famous rock star for a while. He's matured and he's ready to give this relationship a chance. He will do anything in his power to spend the free time they both have to be together. But Trevor wants to make sure she's also ready to move forward.
"Katie, if you’re watching, thanks for everything the last few months, baby. I love you.”
I love this book. The relationship progression played just the right way. No insta- love. Their long distance relationship was difficult but not impossible. I understand the guilty feelings she had. What she has experienced, has marked her. Letting go of the past and letting Trevor enter her heart and take over it was not an easy quest.
I really loved Trevor. He was everything she needed and didn’t know she did. He entered her life at the right time. He was swoon worthy.
“I promise. I won’t leave. I won’t ever leave you, Katie.”
As far as the secondary characters go, I think Kate's sister needs a book. I’m very intrigued in regards to who she left behind.
Isn't this what every girl dreams of? A rock star comes along and sweeps her off her feet? Not Kate.
Kate Mosley is a country girl who just lost her husband and she really doesn't want to promote her book, but she has to and when she is making the talk show rounds, a handsome rocker by the name of Trevor, known to his fans as Trax, is on the same show. The book was written to help her grieve and the last she wants is attention. Of course, Rock Stars (note the capitals there) always get what they want. Full of charm and wit, Trevor is actually a nice guy underneath the glam. He knows Kate is deeply devastated but is still drawn to her.
There are lots of laughs to go along as Kate makes her way through make overs on her trek to the best seller list. Seriously, though, I got the most laughs from Trevor as he tries to understand that Kate doesn't understand what she does to his, um, male-parts. I adored that this book is told from Kate's perspective and how her insecurities play into this relationship. Part of her confusion is that she so deeply loved her husband and feels she shouldn't have any feelings for anyone else.
This book is pure escapism. I wanted to jump inside and just live in this world until I felt better about real life. Even Trevor is made human, and with a strong male lead like this, the balance is perfect. It can go so wrong so quickly. Both characters were believable and so was the romance. I just hope that the author continues with this sort of book for awhile. It made me that happy.
This was so sweet. From the two characters meeting on a show, to the end, pure sweet. A little angsty, but nothing huge. I felt like smacking Kate upside the head a few times from being stubborn, but other than that, pure cute. I did feel he could have had any job, and it would have worked. The actual rock star portion was missing through most of it. It seemed like the rock star portion was to draw people in, but it didn't really need that. The story stands by itself, and the rock part just wasn't needed.
So so great! Not your typical down and dirty rocker book. Definitely had depth and passion that had my emotions on edge! Two main characters that meet on a talk show - one trying to reclaim her life and one just wanting to settle his life down with the perfect one. Both main characters were strong but damaged somewhere along the way. This was Ms. Blake's debut, and it was outstanding!
What that word when you fall giddily in love with a book? Floved? Bloved? Either way, that what happened to me with True North. It's smart, sweet, sexy , and sad at times too. Trevor and Kate are among my #FaveCouples2015 !
Wow!! I am so happy that I found this book. Rock-star romances are my favorites, and I loved this one. The book started off a little slowly for me. We were introduced to Kate, and I liked her. I think the author was so detailed during this time, that I lost a little interest in the story, and at one point I was thinking that maybe this was just too boring to continue. I'm so glad that I stuck with it, because as soon as I met Trax/Trevor. He made this book. He is one of those heroes that is just perfect. He got Kate. He under stood her insecurities, where they stemmed from, and he loved her more for them. He fought for Kate when she stopped fighting for herself. This at times was sweet, funny, emotional, and hot sexy. If not for the small push and pull from Kate, and the some- what boring start, I would have given this book a 5 star rating. I can't wait to dig into the next 2 books in this series!!
This is the second book in my January is Rock-Star Romance theme month.
I wish I could rate this higher. The first half is fantastic. The writing, the humor, the dialogue -- I loved it.
Kate is an author, a widow, who lives in a small town in Montana and has written a best selling women's fiction book. She gets booked on a couple of talk shows in LA to promote the book. While there is is on a Jimmy Fallon type show where the lead singer of a popular rock band is also guesting. His public name is Trax but his actual name is Trevor.
I loved Kate's reaction as she listened to Trax and his band perform on the show:
"The song seems to be about setting a cheating girlfriend out by the curb on trash day, or more specifically, putting her in a trash bag out by the curb. Jesus. Some good old misogyny, anyone?"
But they flirt a little on air and it is very cute.
Trevor does the famous guy thing and has his people contact her people and manages to track her down. He is keenly interested in her but she is more wary. However the romance starts to pick up steam. They begin textng... or rather he begins texting her and I adored the texting portion of their relationship.
Kate: "I don't even like texting. You should be grateful I even respond to yours. I ignore all the ones my sister sends me. 'R U mad?' See that? That's what texting has done to the English language.
Trevor: "Well, when you put it that way. Sorry I bothered u with all my annoying texts. That you, thank you for answering them."
Kate: "I would prefer if you only sent me written correspondence. On fine linen paper using a quill pen. Using words like "anon" and "doth." These letters should have a wax seal of your family crest and be delivered via carrier pigeon.
Trevor: "Anon, I doth not have a family crest. We're a white-trash-in-the-projects kind of family. Do prison tattoos count?"
The book has lots of moment s very awesome dialogue between them but in a way that text exchange kinda ecapsulates the tenor of the romance. Trevor is doing all the heavy pursing and even early on as the reader I was 100% convinced he was all about Kate. Like all in from the get go. Kate, otoh, keeps more of a distance. I know that the idea was that she was insecure and wondering why a big time rock star was into her. But the way it comes off sometimes is that she is dismissive of his interest. ALmost insensitively so.
The middle part of the book shows them in the throes of building the relationship. Again, he is doing all the heavy lifting, she is in her feels.
As I read I got the impression that a shoe would drop because they were sailing along too well. And it did but again it wasn't from Trevor's side it was from Kate's. And it was what took a star off the book for me. Honestly, Kate came off as way too dumb for words here. And again, insensitive in her reaction.
Trevor is squarely a beta hero, but that is not a detractor in any way. He was great. Almost too good in places.
But really he should not have been a rock star. And this is where the book loses another star. If you're making the main character a famous rock star then that should have some bearing on the plot. But in this he was like a rock star in name only. Almost like those billionaires in billionaire books who are only billionaires so they could have a lot of money available. We meet his band a few times and Kate goes to one concert but the book really doesn't go anywhere with that part of him. It just is so he can have money and people. In fact I felt that Trevor was closer to one of those extreme sport guys because the book went way more in depth about his biking on trails, surfing and hiking with his dogs.
Fun read with but all in all I think it collapsed in the end.
