This story is a sharp, genre-blending novella that hurls a sarcastic Philadelphia detective into 1959 via a mob-run time-travel portal.
With a fresh premise, the story unfolds as a mix of noir crime, speculative fiction, and dark comedy.
The voice is confident. The dialogue crackles.
Frankie, a stranded wiseguy from the future, steals many scenes with his foul mouth and sharp wit.
The relationship between Michael and Clara is quick to ignite, providing romantic tension, but also includes scenes of a graphic sexual nature.
Sexual content aligns with the book’s tone, though some readers may find it too explicit for a narrative that also flirts with emotional depth.
Still, the writing keeps a confident pace and delivers plenty of entertainment.
The author could trim some exposition, and the writing underplays the emotional impact of a key death.
However, the concept holds up. The voice is distinct and unfiltered.
