I will make myself strong. I will find Elias. I will kill Elias. I will never trust a boy with my heart again.
These are the vows Charlie Hudson made the day after Elias Everhart betrayed her, nearly killing everyone she loves most. One month later, revenge is still her priority, even as she navigates a harsh new one where her brother and friends can now see Asgard, making them just as susceptible to its dazzling delights - and deadly dangers - as she is.
But when two bodies turn up in the forest outside town, and Elias waltzes back into her life with an offer to help find out what's happening, Charlie finds herself accepting his offer—but only because feigning an alliance is her best chance to figure out how to kill him. And if it feels like the more time she spends with him, the more her heart softens, it must be a trick of the unusually warm fall air. Because there’s no way she would make the grave mistake of falling for Elias Everhart twice… right?
Emma Noyes's Heart of Mischief will have readers falling in love - and falling apart - and loving every minute of it.
Book one in the series - Soul of Shadow - available now!
Emma Noyes is the author of HOW TO HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT, GUY'S GIRL, and the Sunken City trilogy. The first book in her next YA romantasy series, SOUL OF SHADOW, comes out July 2025. She lives in Chicago with her Swedish husband and their accident-prone Pomeranian.
Thank you, St. Martin's Press | Wednesday Books, for sending me this ARC. The first book in this series left me so unwell.
I am such a sucker for a "bad guy," but in all seriousness, the chemistry and tension between these two were undeniable. The characters in this book were exceptional... I loved every one of them. The story had such depth, making for an engaging and enjoyable journey. I was a bit disappointed that this is a longer series; it could have been a perfect duology. I have some questions left, and I don't mind following Elias and Charlie around more, so I'm looking forward to book 3! I am not sure I can wait til November!
4 stars!! Highly recommend this series. It has been so much fun reading it.
Heart of Mischief by Emma Noyes Soul of Shadow #2 Fantasy YA Cozy NetGalley eARC Pub Date: March 10, 2026 St. Martin's Press/Wednesday Books Age: 16+
A month after Elias betrayed her, Charlie, her brother, and their friends, who can all see Asgard, train to protect themselves from the dangers they now face, and to seek her revenge if she ever sees Elias.
And he walks back into town after two bodies are found in the woods, with the offer of helping find out what is killing teenagers and to protect her on her father's orders. She agrees, taking advantage of the ability to get close to destroy him. But there is a connection she still feels for him, and with each day it grows stronger.
Since this is book two of the series, I don't want to give too much away, but it is a romance wrapped around Viking myth and could almost be considered cozy. There is action and some violence, but it isn't too bad, and the romance is clean, making this story suitable for readers sixteen and older.
The pacing was good, a mix between action and plot building, but there were some plot points that felt jumped and it took a few pages to piece them together. Hopefully, those small issues will be fixed when it hits the shelves.
Other than that, it was a good story, and I do want to read the next in the series.
I liked this continuation of the Soul of Shadow series. It was a little tough to believe at time, but it was still fun. I do struggle with the romance aspect a bet. I get the reformed bad boy trope, but this “bad boy” kidnapped her friends and literally tried to kill them all. THat’s not sexy and no matter how much attraction exists couldn’t make a compassionate person like Charlie forgive and forget so quickly. I’m a little frustrated as there will (hopefully) be a third book and I want to know what happens next. It’s a fun series and I do love the Norse mythology woven in.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC. I read the first one and thought there is no way this one will be that good, but to my surprise I enjoyed it even more. The book flower really well and picks up right where the other one left off. Once again the setting was described so well I could picture it my head. I’m also happy that a few of my theories were correct. I need the next one ASAP because this left on another cliffhanger. Charlie is a very well written character and I feel a lot of readers will be able to relate to her. I really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend!!!
This book is perfect for fans of Percy Jackson! The second instalment takes place right where the first book ends. Similar to the first book we have a new antagonist who has been hunting down the twins, and the reapperence of Elias. I love Elias's character so much and I really hope we get to see more of his back story in the third book.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press/Wednesday Books for providing me with a gifted ebook copy of Heart of Mischief through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Heart of Mischief is the second book in the Soul of Shadow series, and it is such a fun young adult fantasy that blends Viking Lore with modern day high schoolers. I really enjoyed the first book, Soul of Shadow, and I loved this one even more. The friendship between Charlie, Abigail, and Lou has been one of my favorite parts of this series. Their friend banter is just so fun.
This book brings more reveals in discovering Charlie’s magic and continuing the mystery of why teens are being murdered in Silver Shores. There is also some great tension between Charlie and Elias, as they try to work together to move past secrets and betrayals from the first book. And now to my most favorite part of the series…Henry!! Who knew a gnome/gremlin could be so lovable and completely steal the story from the other characters!!

I definitely recommend Heart of Mischief if you love young adult fantasy, that is just a fun read with lovable characters and some Viking mythology that brings a great twist of magic and mystery to the story.
Hey everyone! I recently rediscovered my love for reading, and I actually snagged an ARC (advanced reader copy) of this book – and wow, I was not disappointed! Charlie Hudson is on fire with one mission: track down and eliminate Elias Everhart. He shattered her world by orchestrating her twin sister Sophia's death. Now, Elias is back on the scene. Can Charlie finally get her revenge, or are those pesky feelings for him softening her heart and messing with her focus all over again? The tension is real! Meanwhile, pure evil is on the loose, hunting the Children of Loki. Locally, siblings are being systematically murdered. Are Charlie and her brother HIS children? Are they next on the chopping block? Who is the mastermind behind all this chaos, pulling strings from the shadows? Emma (the author) is a pro at making you genuinely feel for these characters. The storytelling is addictive, the Norse Mythos is fascinating, and you're going to love Charlie's little gnome sidekick who just hangs out on her shoulder or in her pocket. Adorable!
I initially started reading this right away to write a quick review, but as I got into it, I realized there were massive backstory events linking everyone together. Plot twist! I figured out this was actually the second book in the series. I immediately dashed out to grab the first one, Soul of Shadow! I'm just reading it like a prequel now since I've already devoured book two!
These are must-reads if you're into Norse Gods and Goddesses, Asgard, and some intense romance (seriously, it's a complicated 'situationship' at best!). Get ready for an awesome ride – have fun!

Finished this book on my flight to NZ, so it really had my attention because I was sitting for so long. This is the sequel to Soul of Shadow, and I was really excited to get the arc sent over for this one as well!
Things I really enjoyed: Henry - best character, no notes. Please read this book and tell me you love him. More Norse mythology! The world is so vast and fascinating.
Things I would love to see changed: less expletives with Nordic Gods or phrases used - this started to get really stale after the first few. I never mind “oh Gods” but the myth specific ones were not my favorite. I’d love to continue to see more growth in our main characters and a few were mentioned and then not included in this story much. Hoping to see them more (cough cough Valkyrie) in the next book.
Excited to see where Noyes goes next because the end of this story was intense and a lot has changed for our characters.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Heart of Mischief is the second book in Emma Noyes’s Soul of Shadow series, picking up where Soul of Shadow left off.
Seventeen-year-old Charlie Hudson is out for revenge after Elias Everheart betrayed her, her brother Mason, and her friends. Elias was instrumental in lifting the veil of the mortal world from their eyes, revealing that Asgard is real, amongst other things.
Teenage siblings, all close in age to Charlie and Mason, are being found dead in the small town of Silver Springs, Michigan. This leads Charlie to wonder if the deaths are somehow connected to her and Mason. When Elias returns, it's confirmed that whoever is responsible is looking for them. Charlie has no other choice but to work with him to find out who's after them and why.
The more time Charlie spends with Elias, the more her vow to end him dissolves, replaced by genuine feelings. Is it possible that he feels the same way?
Heart of Mischief was such a fun, fast-paced story that quickly turns dark. Dark forces are at work, and it’s just a matter of time before they catch up with the Hudson siblings. Through it all, Elias vows to protect them, even if it means his life. When the unthinkable happens, Charlie will need to rely on more than her card magic to save those she cares about.
Charlie, Elias, and Henry (especially Henry) are some of my favorite characters. Charlie is courageous and has a tremendous amount of perseverance, but she suffers from anxiety because of everything that has happened. Elias is still a mystery, with a moral compass that is a little skewed. The two feed off each other with sharp, sometimes cutting comments. They definitely have frenemies and enemies-to- lovers dynamic down pat.
I loved Heart of Mischief, perhaps even more than Soul of Shadow. I loved the surprises and shocking twists. Yep. I totally didn't see those coming. But I STILL have questions. I am most definitely looking forward to reading Dreams of Ruin.

**Received a copy of the book from the publisher and voluntarily reviewed it. Would have personally purchased the hardcover edition if it weren't gifted by the publisher.**
I wasn’t sure I was going to read this one but then it came across my email and I decided I wanted to try it and here we are! I did like it more than the first (which usually doesn’t happen) and I’m invested enough to finish the trilogy. I liked the evolution of the plot and thought the general situation was overall engaging. That, or it just happened to catch me at the right time, and that’s fine too!
The romance worked for me too. There was a better slow burn dynamic to it and I liked the push and pull between them. Kind of an enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers scenario that I am here for.
There’s still some scenes I didn’t mesh with or didn’t quite work for me and that’s okay.
Overall audience notes: - NA Urban Fantasy Romance - Language: mild - Romance: heated make outs - Violence: moderate - Content warnings: under age drinking, near death experiences, murder
I'm officially HOOKED on this series. Norse mythology, forbidden love, enemies to lovers(?), and all the banter. There are so many likeable characters, and some that you love to hate. Morally Grey MMC? Yes, please! I need 72 more books immediately.
Thank you to Libro and Macmillan Audio for the ALC!
Came for Henry the Gnome, SOBBED for Henry the Gnome
This was such a fantastic follow up to Soul of Shadow, I’m blown away. I love Norse Mythology and these series breathes such fresh air into it. It’s not the same old retelling that we have seen time and time again but instead, the myths are flipped on their axis. That and the combination of silly teenagers doing silly teenager things while trying to save the world? Yeah, this book is a good time.
And of course, we can’t forget about sweet, feral Henry. People will say the friendships are the heart and soul of this book series. And I’m not saying you’re wrong BUT I think that designation goes to him. If he doesn’t get a happy ending by the end of this series, everyone will be hearing from me and my lawyer.
Thank you NetGalley for the audiobook. Once more, the production of this series is so good. Emily Pike Stewart, you are a star.
The world building intrigued me in book one, even if I wasnt a fan of the romance. I was hoping to get some more action and answers and......this just didnt measure up. We do get a trip to see Loki and a Monster running around killing, but the MCs are so focused on their own romances and inner struggles and family drama that the literal murders seemed to be put on the back burner. Im with Charlie's friends on this one. Dude literally tried to kill her but hes back and says hes assigned to protect her she gave in. Shes so far gone she ruins her life for him and imo, he didn't do all that much to make up for all the hurt he caused and threats he made to her family in book one. There were heart to heart moments about family but he was still pretty cold and unwilling to admit feelings and she kept lying to herself about hers and putting him before her friends and brother. Who was another thorn throughout the book with his petty attitude. When Charlie finally gets to get all Norse magic user, she seems to turn a bit evil and enjoying the feeling of being unfeeling. I dont like how she makes it makes it seem like drugs are a good thing when using them to compare. It gave me the ick and not sure if this series will get better for me at this point. Mason needs to step it up, Charlie needs to stop caving to anything Elias wants, and Elias needs to pick a side and stick to it. Also need more answers about their connection with Loki and Lokis story.
I won this book in a goodreads giveaway. This is my honest review.
"I will make myself strong, and I will destroy him. And once I do, I will never trust a boy with my heart again"
This book picks up right where book 1 left. So, if you haven't read that, this one will not make sense to you. Go back. Read that. Then come back!
This book brings back all the amazing characters from the first. Charlie is an enigmatic high school student just trying to survive in a *newly* magical world. Her and her friends have opened their eyes to Asgard and the magical creatures surrounding them. Honestly, sounds like a long-standing acid trip. Mason is back and angsty as ever. Sophie makes an appearance or two. And Elias. Elias is back with a vengeance. He is sent to protect the siblings who (at the end of book one) had a revelation as to their paternal figure.
The good: As always, I love viking fantasy stories. This book is no exception. Elias is the Damon Salvatore of my dreams. The romance is rocky and forbidden and perfect.
The bad: The ending/helheim portion felt rushed. I wanted that to be a story in and of itself. I could’ve had the protection story from the beginning last longer and the ending be a different book with so many more details.
Overall I loved this book. I love the viking elements and the morally grey male lead. I’d recommend it to just about any fantasy lover who is fine with YA, angsty romances. I cannot wait for the next book. Which is tough cause this one hasn't even been published yet.
Huge thanks to NetGalley for providing me with this eARC in exchange for my honest review!
5/5 ⭐ It was a fever dream! In the best way possible, of course 🫣
What do you mean all these major events happened in just a few days?? It's crazy and I'm loving it, I enjoy the twist on the classic Norse mythology, it's original, not cringe, and works out pretty well.
The pull between Elias and Charlie is undeniable, it was fun reading more of their banter and chemistry.
It was also interesting to read all the substitutions the author came up with so that there wouldn't be any "Jesus" or "holy shit" because apparently it offended some people who read the first book 🙄 but I'm glad Emma Noyes made it work in a witty way!
Can't wait for the next and last part because the cliffhanger is killing me ugh 😩
I might be a little bit obsessed with this book series but that’s okay.
‘Heart of Mischief’ is the second installment in the ‘Soul of Shadow’ series. This sequel dives deeper into Charlie’s world filled with magic and secrets. Elias continues to be one of the most fascinating characters and my personal favorite. It’s hard not to love him.
What I love most about this series is the world building. What started as a small mystery in a small town grows into this layered magical universe that you just can’t stop reading about.
If you loved the first book for its mystery, you’ll love this one for how it builds an entire world out of that darkness. The book comes out March 2026 💌
Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC copy of the book✨
This was a riveting second part to this story. The changes from Fenrir and the events on homecoming have affected all of the group members in different ways. Charlie learns many things about herself in the aftermath.
There is a lot that happens, the return of Elias, new dangers, binding with Henry, magical discoveries, communication, confrontation, lies, truth, discoveries...it is all very intense and exciting.
I love the deeper delves into Norse mythology that happens, it is so interesting to see the melding of the two worlds. I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens next, I was not expecting the end, and now that I've read it, my brain is reeling.
WHEN IS THIS AUDIO BOOK GOING TO BE AVAILABLE!!! I need it so badly!! I just finished up the Audio ARC of Soul of Shadow and that ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will be scouring netgalley in hopes it is soon!
Heart of Mischief by Emma Noyes was a really nice sequel to the first book. We start off pretty much where we ended after the betrayal of Elias and with all of her friends now knowing about Asgard. She had four things that she continued to say to motivate her most of them revolving around revenge and never trusting Elias again.
Of course, as much as she would like to never see that backstabber again, he just happens to show up claiming a mission to protect her and her brother. I really enjoyed Elias as a character. I think he’s fun, I enjoy his knowledge and charisma, and I thought he brought out a good side of Charlie. While I do love a good enemies to lovers story, for as bad of a betrayal as Elias had, I was really wishing for more tension and distrust. It felt pretty glossed over and while it was brought up constantly, the severity of the actions just didn’t match the prompt forgetfulness and forgiveness. It just didn’t really feel like there was much consequences from what he did.
While the pacing of the book was honestly perfect for me, it didn’t drag ever, and also didn’t feel too quick which was amazing considering the timeline of the book was pretty much a week. Knowing that this whole story happened in a week kind of took away from it in a way because I just couldn’t get over the fact that it took only a week for everything in this book to occur.
Other than that, I enjoyed all of it. I thought the plot was really interesting. I always love how interwoven the norse mythology is to this story. I really enjoy the characters and their unraveling of Asgard. Of course the Vatte is my favorite part. Go Henry. I even really enjoyed Elias and Charlie despite wishing their loathing lasted a lot longer than it did. The ending kind of took me by surprise. I was not expecting the events that happened to occur, yet it also made me very excited for the next book. Thanks Wednesday and Netgalley for an earc. All opinions are my own.
Let’s chat characters because I seriously love them all! I love their dynamics between everyone and how easy it is to keep track of everyone! Also, can I introduce you to Henry because he’ll steal your heart and you’ll throw yourself in front of a bus for him 🥺
Elias’ character is confusing in a good way! I’m really eager for whatever side Elias is on. I also loved being able to get more of his backstory. His development in this book was so tragic 😭 he’s sad boy, bad boy and it hurts me! And he’s so beautifully morally grey!
Charlie is our FMC and I really enjoy her a lot! She’s very smart and determined and she has some really good inner monologues and moral dilemmas she’s working through between who she’s always been and who she desires to be.
I looooove the Norse mythology so stinkin much! Noyse does an amazing job bringing all the lore to the bottom shelf so it’s easy to understand! And it’s integrated so seamlessly into a modern setting! I’m also deep in the Thor/Avenger universe right now so Loki in the book is Tom Huddleston even though their descriptions are so different 😂
Now, the only issue I had was with the pacing. This book is very “second book” coded where it wasn’t a ton of plot movement and more relationship and character development! Which is totally fine, I just kind of came off the high of the first book which was action packed beginning to end so it threw me a little.
With that said, I’m still obsessed and with an ending like that I’m VERY excited for book 2!
And for narrators, I enjoyed this audiobook so much! She is a very easy narrator to listen to and follow and does a good job switching between gender parts!
Thank you so much NetGalley and St. Martins Press for this ARC and ALC in exchange for an honest review!
HOLY WOW THIS BOOK!!! I loved Soul of Shadow was beyond excited to receive an early copy from Emma herself, but never did I imagine to love this book this much!
Emma seriously pulled out all the stops with this one! The way she crafts such a relatable character Charlie is amazing. You genuinely feel for her and the things she is going through. You can see her inner struggle with Elias when he returns. She desperately wants to hate him and vows to destroy him, but she just can’t. She’s so drawn to him, as much as he is to her. He plays that cocky, arrogant, nonchalant MMC so well, but he really wants nothing more than to protect her and keep her safe. There chemistry is so electric! Gah and the banter! I just loved it.
Every character in this book great! From Lou & Abigail to Mason & the Vikings, everyone is adding so much to the story. But my favorite is by far Henry!!! I love that their connection was strengthened and their bond solidified. He really is the perfect sidekick.
The book is so well paced. There were so many twists and turns in this story. Emma kept me guessing the whole time! I mean hello that ending!!! I love that this took us deeper into Norse mythology, and I will admit that everything I know about Loki and Asgard I learned from Marvel movies, so I am learning so much in these books!
It was just so a great read and I feel so honored to have been able to read an early copy. Thank you again Emma for sending me this ARC. I am already waiting impatiently for book 3!
Book 1 was great, but I enjoyed book 2 even more! I just love all the imagery and mythology used in these books. I usually enjoy books that blend modern times with magical and mythical elements, and this series does that very well.
I love all of the banter between the core group of friends. I especially love Lou and her humor. Despite Elias’s betrayals in the previous book, I found it fairly easy to look past that in this book. I feel like there is more to the story with him and his motives. The chemistry between him and Charlie is just undeniable.
I listed to the audiobook which made this book even more enjoyable. The narrator is fantastic and puts so much emotion into the reading. If you enjoy audiobooks, I highly recommend you listen to this series.
We got a lot of answers in this book, but the ending has me wanting more. I can’t wait for then next book! Many thanks to Netgalley for providing me with this audiobook. I have left this review voluntarily.
So, this series is a bit like a guilty pleasure. It’s a fun YA series very reminiscent of 2000’s WB shows. The second book took a bit for me to get into, the beginning was a slower pace, and seemed to be a lot of catch up from book 1. Once I got through that first 3rd, it picked up. Murder mystery, with unknown powers, a bit of paranormal romance, unseen words, and Norse Gods, all within a High school setting, makes for an exciting and nostalgic read. I think the new generation of YA readers would be in for a treat with this one.
Book 2 ends on a cliffhanger, and I will want to know what comes next. As I said a bit of guilty pleasure this one, and I can’t resist Henry!
I compared the last book to the nostalgic feeling of reading Twilight, and this book continued that trajectory. Like I also said about the last book, I would've been absolutely obsessed with this as a teenager.
The Norse mythology continued to be built upon, which I appreciated, and the characters got more fleshed out. The romance is somehow enemies-to-lovers again, but in a way I actually wasn't mad about. Henry, the adorable little gnome, continues being the best character.
Parts of it did feel silly and cheesy to me, but I think that has to do more with its audience and my own age than the book itself.
Things ended in a way I didn't expect, it'll be interesting to see where the story goes from here!
This sequel picked up just a few weeks after the ending of the last book and it wasted no time getting interesting.
I really enjoyed getting to know more about the side characters and seeing Charlie and Mason's relationship repair and grow.
The humour woven in was great, and Henry was even better in this book than last! Lou is a favourite character for me with her sense of humour.
I felt that some aspects were a little rushed (her trusting Elias again and her development of powers, for example) but all in all it was an exciting and interesting book and I enjoyed it more than book 1.
The cliffhanger was shocking and once again has me eager to read the next book!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the eARC.

This was a great addition to the Soul of Shadow series and moves the story forward in ways I didn’t expect. I’ve always enjoyed stories involving Norse mythology and this is no exception. The way Emma Noyes blends the two worlds is so fascinating. I loved all the new information we learned in this book and after that ending I need to know what happens next! The relationships between Charlie and her friends/family felt very natural and their banter had me laughing throughout. Can’t wait for book 3!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.
I am thankful to have received an early copy and I am so excited for the world to read this next book! Not all books have a great next installment but this picked up where it left off and kept you from putting it down and wanting more.
I already can’t wait for the next book and cannot wait to share my love for this story with all my friends!
