The awesome kaiju-like battles between Hulk and a slew of Monsters from Hell (literally) are worth reading this series, brought to technicolor life by a team of great artists. The story, by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, isn't bad either. Volume 6, "Monster Road", leads up to the decisive battle between Hulk and the Eldest, which is epic...

That one issue that felt like a particularly dark episode of the Incredible Hulk TV show was a nice change of pace.

No actual bears were harmed in the writing of this comic.

I have not enjoyed this series, this book is better than others but still i am not impressed. I wanted to give this book 2.5 stars but it did just enough to round up instead of down. I am never happy I hated the sci-fi Starship Hulk, and (I am not a horror fan) do not like horror style story of the Hulk. I was hoping this would be the end of it but there is another series if it.

The Hulk is finally alone, and on the final stretch of the Monster Road. He and the Eldest are on a collision course to a dark destiny.

To me the Hulk is a bash and smack character with a bit of psychology in the mix. Dealing with dark magic, demons, possessions and corrupted religions is not his wheelhouse. However, can understand the horror angle, but I was expecting more fist fight with demons being species that could actually take the Hulks punches and physicality. The magic and all is more Doctor Strange's territory.

A really good final volume of The Incredible Hulk (soon to be The Infernal Hulk). After the last volume hinted at Bucky tracking the kidnapped gamma individuals, he shows up on the scene and freaks Charlie out into running away from the Hulk.

Hulk sad, and only getting sadder as he encounters a kid with an abusive father. This one-shot could have been straight out of Hellboy, just terrific, simple storytelling.

So, Hulk double sad, sitting on the bottom of the ocean, when (abruptly!!) all that Mother of Monsters stuff comes to a head. The source of the kidnappings is revealed and Hulk is pulled into a battle with Abomination. This battle swiftly turns horrific . Cool, dark stuff that promises to only be more brutal going forward. Sign me up!

Review of advance copy

First: I read each issue in this volume as individual floppies. I didn’t get an advanced copy.

This “final” volume in Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s “Incredible Hulk” is perhaps my least favorite, even though it has perhaps the best “Hulk” story in the series. The reason it’s my least favorite is because it ends on a cliffhanger that will be followed up in Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s “Infernal Hulk”.

Like most comics today, there is far too little actual reading with a greater reliance on the art to fill up the pages, and the art is mostly excellent. While it took me a minute to enjoy Nik Klein’s art, it has always been a great fit for the story, and my consistent gripe with the series has been with the occasional difficulty in reading the lettering. I’m not sure if that’s a printing issue or a letterer issue, but it is most definitely an issue. My only real problem in this volume, art-wise, is Kevin Walker’s inconsistent and often boyish presentation of Charlie Tidwell in issue #26’s “Soldier and Flame”.

By far the best “Hulk” story, for me, is issue #27’s “The Falling Down Tree”. The worst issue in this volume is the previously mentioned #26. With a completely unnecessary Winter Soldier appearance that’s used as a catalyst for Charlie to leave the story, likely to re-join in “Infernal Hulk”.

The final volume of the first phase of PKJ's Hulk story comes to a close, bringing Hulk face to face with the Mother Of All Monsters at last.

I know some people don't like the whole magic/cosmic side of things stretching into the Hulk mythos, but I think it works really well here. The first few issues of the volume are a bit quieter, a ghost story and a slow realisation for poor Charlie, before the last three issues kick things into high gear and bring things to an explosive head. I do wish the Abomination's return wasn't spoiled on the trade cover however, because that was a pretty good cliffhanger.

I think where this book's gone a bit off the rails is the artwork, which feels like it gets away from the artists at times. There's so much violence, and when you add the crazy landscapes into it, things get really messy. Even someone as practiced at the series like Nic Klein (who only draws the last issue here, presumably so he can get a headstart on the Infernal relaunch) doesn't manage to keep everything as tight as before, and Adam Gorman's few issues in the middle become little more than swathes of green at times. Hopefully things can get nailed down again going forward, because I'm still entirely on board with what's going on here.

The end of one fantastic era of Hulk and the beginning of another. This is an epic, insane, over the top mixture of superhero action, cosmic horror, creature horror, and brutal, gory action. It brings the most recent volume of Incredible Hulk to a close and sets the stage for the current Infernal Hulk comic.

I had a blast with it.

Oddly heartbreaking on many fronts. I mean, what do you do when the goal you've sacrificed EVERYTHING and then some for turns out to be... Pointless? Banner failed in keeping the hulk out of Eldest's hands, and Eldest "freed" the Mother of Horrors" only to find a rotten husk. That said, I'm looking forward to seeing Johnson's follow-up with Infernal Hulk!

I gotta say, this version of the Hulk is badass. That ending has me chomping at the bit to read The Infernal Hulk. Love all of the body horror as well.

Wrapping up the Bruce Banner Hulk time, for a bit...

Banner, literally gets ripped out of the Hulk body and replaced by Eldest. This horror series keeps getting stranger.

The Nic Klein issues are 5 stars. This would be an all-timer if it had consistent art. I'd be willing to only get 6 issues a year.
