Industry giant Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead) leaves his mark on the Ultimate X-Men!

If one man is capable of disrupting the carefully controlled world of Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, it’s Ultimate Cable! He comes from a tragic future, and his sinister secrets will shock the X-Men to their very core. He’s not the only refugee from tomorrow here today: Bishop is completing his own team of mutants, ready to carry on Charles Xaviers’ legacy. You’ll never guess who the new Ultimate X-Men are! But dark times are ahead as the evolutionary emperor known as Apocalypse arrives — and two more monstrous threats, who look eerily like Stryfe and Onslaught, rear their ugly heads! Plus: The X-Men are on a collision course with the Fantastic Four! And the end is nigh as Ultimatum strikes and a tidal wave sweeps through New York City — and Magneto is to blame!

Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.

Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.

In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.

Oh boy.
So I think this is important context, when I review books I always do it on my phone just because it is convenient, but here I am on my laptop for this one since I have a lot to bitch about.
I don't do one star reviews because for me that typically means it was so awful I just couldn't finish, but trust me when I say that while I did finish this, this is the closest I have gotten to rating something I finished one star. So let's begin:
I will first off acknowledge that yes, Ultimatum is included in this and I knew about that going into it. Having read it before, I was prepared for this at least. The consensus you may have heard is right, it is one of the single worst things Marvel has ever put out, it is an ugly, edgy, and downright awful comic. But I got this omnibus for the other 90% which was the ongoing Ultimate X-Men comic. I can recognize the series faults but I had a good time with the first 2 omnibus, a fun new take on the X-Men. I figured that everything up to Ultimatum would be more of the same, not particularly inspiring stories but very fun at the very least. I was wrong. The drop off in quality is incredibly noticeable and it sucks it begins under Kirkman who has done genuinely phenomenal work elsewhere in the comic's world. I will be nice and just say he was probably just cashing a check for his issues. A few other small notes before I get into a big tirade: the art in UXM #81-82 is some of the worst art I have every seen in a comic book and I absolutely hated reading it partly because of the attack on my eyes; there are major problems with characters coming out of nowhere (such as in #87 where Trask just appears in a conversation where he was not in the previous panels) and moments where the story seems to jump forward with no explanation; genuine character assassination especially when you reach the issues in the #90s (certain character just now being shown to have killed their foster parents, drug addiction for the sake of drug addiction); and a gripe you hear about most of the Ultimate comics that never super irked me until now, this comic had to get incredibly edgy just for the sake of being edgy.
The main parts of this omni I couldn't stand though were written by one Aron Coleite. The only good aspect of his writing is that as far as I can tell, the less then 10 issues he wrote for UXM were so bad they were the last comics he ever wrote. Character assassinations, terrible pacing, useless edginess, I really grew to hate the issues he wrote. Every once in a while an omnibus gets printed missing pages, and I genuinely was worried that was the case with how the story was nonsensically paced but luckily (or unluckily) my omnibus is pristine, he is just that shit of a writer.
Ultimatum is terrible, nothing new there and I am not going to beat a dead horse. Reading UXM just gave me a deeper hatred for it, especially regarding Emma Frost and the storyline that seemed to still have juice regarding her. But whatever. I hated the majority of this omnibus and I can only recommend for the most passionate of X-Men or Ultimate Universe collectors. I will be picking up the 4th though just to finish this story and because I have heard it does get a bit better.
Aron, please continue never writing comics.
