MORE HARD-WORKING CATS!Imagine a world where cats do all kinds of jobs! They deliver your food, help you in the hospital, and entertain you in so many ways in the second volume of this hilarious full-color comic by the author of Yokai Cats and Monster Cats.
It's so hard not to enjoy this book when 1. the art style is completely adorable, 2. the book itself is solid and well made, with thick and nice pages and vibrant full-color printing, and 3. I'm reading it under a heated blanket with a cat purring and kneading on me. These are the ideal conditions with which to enjoy Cats with Jobs, so me and my cat Sissy give it a thumbs up!
My favorite jobs this time were Santa, Ninja, Concept Cafe/Neko maid, novelist, and English teacher. So cute!
In terms of drawbacks, I found this volume lacking in comparison to the first. Not that this needs to be some Great Substantive Work, but even when it comes to simple 4-koma gags, this volume felt on the lazier side to me. I feel as though the punchlines weren't as varied as the first volume's were, and I wasn't laughing as much. This volume does tell the same couple jokes again and again: one is the gag of people ordering food but their "food" order turns out to actually be cats (i.e., ordering a tuxedo at a coffee shop and they bring out a tuxedo cat), this happens a few times. And another gag is humans ordering food or treats made by/for cats that involves foods that cats can eat, like Churu or dried bonito flakes. It gets rather stale rather fast when multiple comics rely on the same punchline. I know the concept is limited so it's hard to come up with lots of gags that are genuinely funny, and cat humor in general is sort of like reinventing the wheel, but I wish that there had been a bit more variation in the writing of the comics.
This manga is very much harmless and enjoyable though, and it's nice if you want something simple and light-hearted and cute to pass the time with. I would definitely recommend this book to kids interested in getting into manga (I think I would have really, really loved this manga when I was around the age of 10 or younger). I think the quality of the book is nice too and would make a nice addition to anyone's manga collection, especially the vibrant coral pink of this cover with the cute maid cat illustration -- I love it!
But as for the contents within, it just gets a passing grade for me.
