Heart of a Hero

Big-city art instructor Rachel Hollister isn't back home in Horseshoe, Texas, for more than a few hours before she's lost and stranded in the woods surrounding Rebel Ranch. But Rachel's bad luck takes a sudden turn for the better when a ruggedly handsome cowboy manages to save her life, not just once, but twice, in the same day.

Rancher Egan Rebel can't resist helping someone in need, even an enemy—or the daughter of one. It was Rachel's father who unjustly sentenced Egan to prison years ago. As attracted as he is to Rachel and her bright, creative energy, Egan can't forgive the man who stole his freedom. Can Egan let go of the past, or will he turn his back on the only woman he's ever loved?

"What do you want to happen?"

She raised her head and stared into his gorgeous eyes. "Call me ma'am."

His lips curved into a smile. "What do you want to happen, ma'am?"

"Make love to me, cowboy."
pg. 133

Egan finds Rachel stranded on the side of the road. She's coming back into Horseshoe after a 12-year absence. She is the daughter of the judge who put him in prison. He attempts to escort her through the woods and back to civilization, she's attacked by dogs blah blah blah.

OK, so, Linda Warren. Linda Warren has a writing style. It is dramatic. It is like soap operas or telenovelas. It is kind of 'old-fashioned' in the land of romance novels. These kind of sweeping dramas are no longer really in fashion.

However, I'm not saying her writing style is bad. It caters to a certain audience. I'm willing to bet there are still swathes of romance-readers who still crave this drama.

Unfortunately, with the old-fashioned style and the drama comes some retro sexism. Again, this might bother some readers more than others.

There are Linda Warren books I enjoy. I liked A Texas Holiday Miracle. I thought it was pretty charming. But plenty of her books are unpalatable to me due to the drama and the sexism.

SO HOW DOES THIS ONE BREAK DOWN?

1.) DRAMA Warren has created a kind of Hatfield-McCoy feud in Horseshoe, TX. The Rebels (yes, I'm supposed to believe that's their last name) and the McCrays hate each other. So we have that going on.

Rachel herself is the daughter of Judge Hollister, the judge who put Egan in prison. Egan told the judge he would get revenge on him as he was being carted off to prison, and so when Rachel goes 'missing' the judge blames Egan and thinks Egan kidnapped her or some shit. So we have that drama going on.

Then Rachel believes that her mom's death 12 years ago was 'her fault.' So she has all this guilt and pain from blaming herself for her mom getting gunned down in a mall parking lot.

There's some other stuff going on, but those are our main dramas.

I would advise not picking up this book unless you like drama.

Don't all romance books have drama, Carmen?

Well, I mean, all romance novels have a plot. (At least, they should.) But usually the drama isn't dialed up to the levels Warren uses in her books. Think 'telenovela.' Every emotion is heightened and exaggerated. Everything is a scandal.

Some people enjoy this, some people don't.

2.) SEXISM Because Warren goes into this retro-drama, she often falls into the trap of retro-sexism. This can be grating.

I wasn't a huge fan of Rachel. Despite her CONSTANTLY stating about how 'she's an adult now' and 'she's grown' and 'she's independent,' she's still flighty, naïve, acts like a child a lot, and projects this kind of helpless, weak, slightly whiny image that did not endear her to me. I imagine she could grate on a lot of the readers.

In contrast, this makes Egan step into this 'manly' role of always protecting her, being strong, blah blah blah.

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't mind stories about heroines who are weak or need help nor do I mind heroes who are strong and display traditionally masculine traits. I eat up historicals. However, here, in 2015, it kind of rubbed me the wrong way. MAINLY because of Rachel's childishness. I don't find childish heroines sexy. Being weak physically is one thing. Needing help is one thing. Having a man save you from being attacked by dogs - as happens in this book - is fine. It's her childish mewling I can't stand.

For example, her being 'scared' to come home. She left New York to come here. She was literally driving to her dad's house. Now, she's in a cabin with Egan, begging him to allow her to stay there longer because she doesn't want to face her family. THIS is the kind of weakness I mean.

She clings onto this man she met, who just materialized out of the woods, and completely trusts him. This is the kind of childishness I mean.

She says she's 'in love' with him after knowing him for a day and a half, and at least half of that time she was gripped by a virulent fever. This is the kind of stupidity I mean.

She flies off the rails talking to her dad. She sits on her brother's lap. She's 29! She's sitting on her brother's lap! I was like o.O I just found her interactions with her family to be like that of a young girl rather than an adult woman.

It's not physical weakness that bothers me in heroines, nor is it needing the hero's help with something. Or the hero's protection. It's her attitude and personality, which is like that of a child, which bothers me. I want to read romances about two adults falling in love. Two grown adults. Even though she's 29, she did not seem like a grown adult to me.

And Egan is all like, Being male and in control, he stretched out on the bed and his body relaxed. pg. 51 This is the kind of stupid sexism I try to avoid. "Oh, I'm so manly!" Whatever. The more you have to talk about it, the less I believe it.

There's even a throwaway comment in this book about a woman who 'chose her career over a man and children, who would do such a thing' or some sexist shit. Ugh.

3.) TONTO I found it kind of insane that Egan calls his best friend Jericho, whom he bonded with in prison, Tonto. And first I thought he was just doing this privately, in his head, but then he is talking to Jericho directly and refers to him as 'Tonto' and addresses him as Tonto. I don't know, if I was Jericho I would be rabid and not put up with this shit. Adding to the cringe-factor is the fact that Egan is white and Jericho is white-black-Mexican-AmericanIndian. It's uncomfortable.

Are you saying Warren is racist?

No. But Egan definitely is on some level.

Later Jericho will be starring in his own book, becoming the hero in a Harlequin Heartwarming, of all things. So stay tuned for further developments. It's a strange line to put in a hero who is a convict, a man comfortable with violence, and someone who feels fine about defying the police and raising arms against police. The idea that this type of man would be a hero in a Heartwarming is honestly quite funny if you are familiar with the Harlequin lines. I expect him to be neutered quite a bit for this.

HOW'S THE SEX, CARMEN?

Sigh. Okay, there was a really cute thread of cuteness in this book revolving around Egan calling Rachel 'ma'am.' She really liked it.

"If you'll listen, I'll tell you," she snapped.

"Yes, ma'am."

"I love the way you say ma'am."

"I say it like everybody else in Texas."

"No, you say it with respect and I feel it."
pg. 23

She loves him calling her ma'am, and starts ordering him to address her as 'ma'am.' I thought this was ADORABLE and cute and funny.

"I like you, Egan Rebel." ...

"Go to sleep."

"Call me ma'am."

"Go to sleep."

"I will if..."

"Go to sleep... ma'am."

She laughed...
pg. 27

This goes on through the whole book, I found it delightfully charming. Probably the only delightfully charming thing in this novel. I was eager and excited for this to carry over into the bedroom. How cute, funny, and potentially hot would a sex scene be where she demanded that he call her 'ma'am' in bed? This idea had a lot of cute potential, IMO.

We started out great, as you can see from the opening quote to this review.

But things quickly devolved from there. Not only does she not demand he call her 'ma'am' while doing incredible things to her body, but it appears he is not really interested in doing incredible things to her body or taking direction. Instead it's yet another round of 'Carmen suffers through straight PinV sex with no thrills or frills.' To my immense disappointment.

I'm desperately craving a little excitement in these fictional bedroom scenes, and I'll probably dive into a steamy Blaze after this unending HAR run is over. Because expecting good sex from these HARs is a lesson in disappointment.

TL;DR You have to enjoy Linda Warren's retro drama style in order to enjoy this book. Like soap operas? Telenovelas? Do you like scandalous drama and extreme emotions in your romance novels? This could be your jam.

If retro-sexist attitudes annoy you, if you can't tolerate a heroine who acts like a child instead of an adult, if you don't like high drama - you might want to avoid not only this book but perhaps Warren as an author.

Good story. Egan is the loner of the seven Rebel brothers, thanks to some time in prison for a crime he didn't commit. He prefers the open air and cattle to time around people. Rachel hasn't been home for twelve years because of memories she has been trying to escape. On the drive from the airport she decides to take the long way home to give herself more time and ends up lost and stranded when her car breaks down.

When Egan finds Rachel he can't just leave her there, even when he finds out who she is. As they try to make their way back to his ranch, Rachel is attacked by dogs belonging to Egan's neighbor and head of a family that has had a long standing feud with the Rebels. Egan saves her from the dogs and they hole up in a cabin for the night while Egan treats Rachel's injuries. Rachel sees past the tough ex-con exterior that Egan projects and considers him her hero and more. There's a strong attraction between them, but Egan doesn't want the complications of a relationship, especially with Rachel.

Once they are rescued, Rachel ends up unconscious in the hospital thanks to her injuries. Her father, believing Egan kidnapped Rachel in an attempt at revenge, has Egan arrested and thrown in jail. Once she regains consciousness Rachel sets the record straight. I loved the way that she stood up to her father and blamed him for jumping to conclusions.

Rachel has come back to Horseshoe in an attempt to face the memories that have haunted her. She blames herself for the death of her mother and hasn't been able to deal with the guilt. Talking to Egan has given her the courage to confess her feelings to her family. There turns out to be a lot more to the events of that day than she knew, and while her guilt is relieved there is now an additional strain with her father. Throughout it all, Egan is a source of strength for her.

The relationship between Egan and Rachel burns hot and fast. They had been attracted to each other from the start. Egan's care and protectiveness are obvious, but he considers his past too big an obstacle to overcome. When Rachel calls him on his refusal to look at the future, he takes a look at who he has become and doesn't like what he sees. His talk with her father was an eye opener for him and gave him a new perspective. Rachel also discovers that many of the things that she had believed can be viewed differently now that she's older and knows more of what was really happening. She realizes that Egan isn't the only one who has been hiding. I loved the ending and seeing Rachel help Egan face his fears and be ready for them to move forward together.

The book is a fast read, and i like that about it. It is a romance novel about a damsel in distress and she fell for him.

I did not like that the book din't have much details about their previous, but i guess its okay cause it made the book shorter.

Simply adore Linda Warren and have for longer than dirt so was excited to read her latest book, Texas Rebels: Egan, and boy was I happy I did. I loved every aspect of the story, from an innocent man being sent to jail to that man growing up and finally finding a person who sparks his interest only to realize she is the daughter of the man who sent him to jail. He tries to keep his distance but the chemistry and attraction was too much for him to resist.
Once he's had her in his bed he was still delusional enough to believe that he could push her away and go back to his life. Fortunately for him she was a woman who wouldn't take "no more" for an answer. Not when love and emotions entered the picture. Only one thing they both hadn't counted on was her father sticking his nose in where it didn't belong and once again insisting that he be arrested again...
Now he must decide if their worth fighting for. If she's his other half.
Loved this story and watching how it developed all the way to its culmination... Linda Warren writes exquisitely and I can't wait for the next book in the Texas Rebels series!!! You read this and you'll be eagerly anticipating her next release the same as I am. Falcon's story comes in August so get your copy of Egan's story and be ready !

I really enjoyed this story. It was a story about forgiveness, facing the past, redemption, and Love.

Egan was a loner. He was accused, and sentenced for a crime that he didn't do. He no longer trust people, or the law. He loves his family on the other hand. I love his big family. You could feel their strength, love, and closeness throughout the story.

Rachel's mother died many years ago. she has carried the pain, and guilt around with her far too long. It's time for her to go home, and face the past. Before she got home, she got lost, and it was Egan that found her in the woods. He was also there when she got attacked by dogs.
This story touched my heart. My book review will not do this book justice. It's just one of those books, that you should read. It will leave you with a smile.

I read this on a trip to and from D.C. last week. I'm not sure what possessed me to pick up another Harlequin American... with the exception of a few I read from starter authors who went on to do good things, they have always disappointed.

I'm angry. WHY? Because this had the potential to be such a good story, but the writing felt choppy and rushed. I love a good Hatfields /v/ McCoy story and this one had SO MUCH POTENTIAL. I also love family/town series and I know that there are series about Horseshoe, TX that come before and following this one.

I think what really bothers me the most is that on top of the "feud" mentioned in the book blurb, there was an even BIGGER feud going on that wasn't mentioned that got me longing for more. The whole damsel in distress insta-love storyline doesn't usually do it for me, but I went with it because I wanted to read about the whole Rebels /vs/ McCray feud. I also didn't love was all the side drama with Rachel's family over straight-up lack of communication. The members of Rachel's family are a bunch of Rocky-Mountain canaries...

My other big beef (and what makes it annoying to a new reader) is that constant catching up and back stories written into the book. I would rather read more about what's going on currently to drive the story-line. It breaks my heart to rate a book one-star. I'll usually stick with 2 star, especially if there are more stories to hear. This was a tough one for me because I still want to hear more Grandpa stories and read more about the Rebel brothers. But I just can't get past the author's style of writing. I had high hopes based on the reviews.

My Ratings:

5*****I loved this book, consider it an all time favorite
4**** Thoroughly enjoyed the book and will recommend it
3*** I liked it well enough,
2** Brain Candy - It was okay. Writing mediocre, will
keep/re-read if part of a series
1* didn't like/possibly not finished.

Pin the Tail on the Romance time! My TBR tally is a ridiculous 1386 books, so I spun the magic random number generator app to get book #1340 Texas Rebels: Egan by Linda Warren

Why Was This In My TBR: I think it was a free download from Harlequin. I'm hopeless when it comes to free books

What Is This Book: Harlequin American Romance (2015). I think this may be the first Harlequin American Romance I've ever read

Is It Part of A Series: Texas Rebels (1) (I haven't read any of this series)

Rating: 2.5 stars. I liked Egan, the crusty cowboy loner dude, but Rachel was a silly, privileged butterfly with ditzy daddy issues that wouldn't stop chasing Egan after he kept saying NO. Even after Egan finally said hey, YOUR DAD WAS THE JUDGE THAT WRONGLY INCARCERATED ME. I know love forgives all, but that would be a deal breaker for me

Was It Worth The Price: Well, it was free...

Romances are, if anything, predictable. Authors specialize in devising obstacles to the cuddling that is to follow. With one cowboy and one damsel in distress the die would seem to be cast. That her father was responsible for unfairly sending him to jail for 3 months when he was twenty is the fly in the ointment. The neighbour’s four dogs that were likely responsible for killing the rancher’s calves that he shot in the gal’s defense a further development. The feud that has been ongoing with the neighbouring dog owner’s family for generations a further complication.

According to formula Harlequin Romances have happy endings. This author keeps the reader guessing until the last page of the last chapter. To write so evocatively about the rough and tumble among seven brothers I’m assuming Ms Warren grew up in a household with several male siblings.

Egan has spent time in prison and has been sticking close to home on the family ranch since his release. When tracking dogs that killed a calf he stumbles upon Rachel Hollister who is lost. At first he is reluctant to help, but he is honorable and can't leave her on her own. There is plenty of interesting twists that keeps the story exciting. Both Egan and Rachel discover that there is never just one way to view what has happened to them. I really liked how we get what seems to be a genuine male view point for Egan (there is a lot of depth to him). The writing is decent and the pace of the story is pretty good.

Egan's story is to common even today. I love this story it was the first Rebel story and Rachel didn't see Egan's past only his present. I like the way Linda brought Egan and Rachel's story to life. The way Rachel's secret was defining her. Its so well written and sets the pace for the stories that come after this one. I look forward to reading all of the Rebel stories. J

Regardless grief and guilt are hard things. Letting go is even harder. Finding someone to help and support you through it makes all the difference.

I can honestly report this is the worst book I have ever read. The dialogue is robotic, the superfluous and unnecessary detail is cringe, but damn, was it probably the funniest thing I’ve ever read and I don’t regret spending time on it at all. Two stars!

"Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?", singer Paula Cole once asked. They are clearly evident in abundance--Linda Warren has found 7 of them in this first novel of her planned series.

You can always count on this author for a good, solid romantic read, and she certainly doesn't disappointment in this novel. Although I did find it a bit dizzying to meet, remember the names of and sort out the relationships between all the members of two entire families of feuding Texas neighbors, the hero and heroine were well drawn, and their relationship kept me reading from cover-to-cover.

I'm a sucker for a love-at-first-sight, Romeo & Juliet story, add to that a dark, intense, cowboy and a heroine with some grit and backbone, and you've got a winning combination.

I have to admit I really didn't pay attention to what the book was about when I saw that cover I knew I had to check it out.

There is so much to love about this book from the drama, suspense and romance. I loved the connection between Rachel and Egan it was one of those cheesy love at first sight but at least its stretched out a bit with the spark between the two. I loved that there was the dual point of views with the characters facing their own set of problems. I loved that there was enough drama going on and suspense to keep the readers guessing and wondering whats going to happen next. Overall this was a great read and I recommend you lovely readers to check it out.

I’ve enjoyed my forays into the small Texas town of Horseshoe, and getting to know the folks who live there. This is Egan Rebel and Rachel Hollister’s story. Egan is a loner who did a short stint in prison when he was twenty. And Rachel’s father is the judge who harshly sentenced him. Rachel returns to her home town to visit her family twelve years later, and finds herself lost in the woods and in danger. It’s Egan who saves her life, not once, but twice. Even though they’re sweetly attracted to each other, Egan can’t see past his anger at Rachel’s father to imagine a future for them. I liked this satisfying love story, with its caring, honorable characters.

If there is one person Egan Rebel hates more than anyone with the last name McCray; it's Judge Hollister. But when Egan stumbles upon the Judge's daughter back in town and lost, he winds up helping her find her way into town and saving her from his crazy neighbor's dogs. Can she change his mind about the Hollister's?
Rachel is back in town to face the ghosts of her past, but at the last minute gets cold feet and takes the "scenic route." Which just means she gets lost; luckily for her Egan shows up to be her knight in shining duster and quickly becomes her rock. If only he would stop pushing her away and admit he loves her too.

A story of redemption, forgiveness and hope. Linda Warren managed to convey all of these emotions. Egan was unjustly accused and sentenced for an event he was innocent of. Rachel is the daughter of the man who Egan blames or it. Will he be able to let go of all the anger and hate he feels for his happily ever after? Or will he wallow in self pity and seek revenge. I received an ARC of Texas Rebels: Egan by Linda Warren for an honest review. An emotionally raw story that will break and mend your heart one piece at a time.

I really liked this book. I fell in love with Egan and all of his brothers, so therefore I am looking forward to reading more about each of them. It is really a sweet love story, but I was beginning to wonder if Rachel and Egan were going to get together before the book ended, but then I loved the way it ended. I did receive this book for free through Goodreads First Reads, but this an honest review.

All those Rebel Men, Mmm Mmm!
Wasn't sure I would like this when I read Egan had been in prison unfairly by the good ol boy system, in the past, but the outcome needed it.
Rachel grew up a lot in a short amount of time, so totally liked her, her strength and insights along with Egan's.
They made such a good couple. Their journey had ups and definitely downs, and funny bits in between. Will definitely read more of the Rebel Men.

Texas Rebels: Egan by Linda Warren is a good book. Funny at times but series stuff going on. Looking forward to the stories about the other Rebel brothers. Egan is a loner. Not trusting anyone since he was sent to prison for something he didn't do. Life was tough in prison. Released after three months. He meets the daughter of the judge who sent him to prison. Rachel Hollister has past history problems of her own. A very good read.
