Kali has always felt trapped between two the ordinary and the extraordinary. Born into a family shrouded in secrets and bound by ancient loyalties, she’s spent her life navigating shadows she didn’t even know existed. But a fateful encounter at the local pier shatters her carefully constructed reality, revealing a hidden realm where the supernatural is real—and she stands at its heart.
Tethered by a mysterious bond to Caleb—her best friend’s brooding, commanding ex-boyfriend—Kali is thrust into a world she doesn’t fully understand. As she unravels her enigmatic heritage and the dormant power simmering beneath her skin, the lines between friend and foe blur. The Scath, an unseen supernatural layer over the human world, teems with danger. Hunters, werewolves, and ancient rivalries awaken, threatening not only Kali’s life but the fragile balance of this hidden realm.
Desperate for answers, Kali plunges into the world of the Scath, where whispers of deadly supernatural creatures turn into chilling realities. Teenagers are vanishing, alliances are crumbling, and danger closes in from all sides. With her heart caught between loyalty and betrayal, Kali must decide who to trust—and who to deceive—before time runs out.
Torn between duty, desire, and a destiny she never asked for, Kali faces impossible choices that could shape the future of the supernatural world—or destroy it. Can she rise above the secrets of her past and harness the power within, or will her decisions unravel everything she holds dear?
Oh boy. I feel Coved: High Tides struggles with the amount of ideas and plots all fighting for dominance to align with the main premise of the story regarding Kali, the secret that's been kept from her and how that plays into the relationships around her.
I don't mind getting information and details when the MC does, but the exposition is inflated with Kali's questions that come up over, and over and over agin. And it's frustrating because I could overlook some inconsistencies and bumps along the way but there was a point where the story mostly lost me.
In my notes, I said I don't think Kali should've been to passive about her family lying to her and I stand with that statement. I also didn't like Eli all that much because he never really felt like the "anchor" Kali made him out to be.
Readers, Coved: High Tides is an urban paranormal fantasy story--with brief descriptions of spice--where humans and creatures intersect. It strongly invokes the vibes of Teen Wolf & Vampire Diaries. Specifically, seasons one and two of the shows respectfully till the 40-ish percent mark. And then the rest of the book fumbles out of control--again like the later seasons of both shows.
Go into it knowing that the premise, magic, powers, creatures and concept are intriguing and interesting. But be prepared to have a few conversations again, again and again. With most questions only getting half answered.
Full disclosure: The ending was so confusing that I was expecting it to all be a weird coma dream Kali was having🤷🏾♀️. It was not. Take that however you want.
Will I continue with the next book? Yes. Because I still want some answers.
DNF at 58%. I was trying to get to the end but I realized that I didn’t have the patience. The book has a great premise and the first couple chapters had me hooked.
As I continued to read, I realized it just wasn’t my speed. Too many characters were introduced so quickly. No one wanted to answer ANY questions and the FMC just let things happen to her.
Halfway through the book and I have no idea where the story is going. Even skimming just didn’t help explain anything. And the world building was also confusing.
It was so good with it being C.K. Creeds first novel!! I’m so proud of her, there was a really good plot, however at times I felt like we where getting no where but at the same time we where. I love the cliff hanger, I’m so excited for the next book. There was a bit of repetition, but overall very good, love the emotional twist!
