This definitely has it's moments.

I really loved the characters. I felt like Tanihara was one note in the beginning: he's the guy the kids love because, while he pretends he doesn't like them, he's really charming with kids. I've seen that before but as the series goes along and he really starts to fall for Sensei, you see more vulnerability there. I really believed that he was struggling with his attachment to Sensei.

Sensei was a complex character. I've seen the awkward, reserved but strangely passionate character veer into creepy before (Twilight for example) but here, Sensei is just awkward. He's reserved because he doesn't want to come on to strong but he tries so hard for the people he cares. The interlude with his ex boyfriend was kind of meh but it was necessary to make Tanihara realize what he had.

This wasn't a perfect manga but I definitely enjoyed it. The art was very good. The sex scenes were really hot and I like the characters.

4 stars.

Not For the Faint of Heart - Hide and Seek Vol 1 Review

Time for a holiday two-for (twosome? darn, I should have read one more). This one still thanks to a Ranger IPA from New Belgium and a half bottle of Merlot (_sips_). Cheers! Here we have Hide and Seek, a manga that apparently spun out of another series that I can't bring myself to pick up because it looks incredibly creepy. Sorry, Japan, but the age difference between those two makes it look wrong. So no thanks. But here we have two consenting adults doing the dirty (or the clean, with the amount of bathing in this volume) in sexy and fun ways. Hurrah!

I shouldn't preface this by saying that the reason my wife and I picked this up was because it looks like a Dr. Sexy, MD book (which is a convoluted reference to Supernatural), but I will anyway because wine. Deal. Anyway, the volume focuses on a young shop owner and father that becomes ill and meets a reserved young doctor. The doctor is new in town and friendly and they hit it off, and then it turns out the doctor is gay and the shop owner decides he's cool with that and actually wanna do it? Which is a great set up (if a little light in the plot department). And that's most of the volume. And I guess it's a stretch to really like this, but it's a fun and great premise to me. It works. It's sex positive and fun. So yes, it's a good setup.

There isn't much to the rest of the story, more about how these two guys meet and how their relationship starts to blossom. Of course they think it's just about sex at first but this is yaoi so of course there is more going on. They're falling for each other. And it's cute. And I liked it (_sips_). Onward. It doesn't hurt that the artwork is gorgeous and the dialogue is fun and playful. The sex is definitely explicit and well rendered and makes me almost curious to check out this person's other work (almost, but not quite). It's just some fun, and I like that the main character has a kid, because that's not something that's often dealt with. I like that he's bisexual for the same reason.

And in the end, while the story might be lacking in most respects, this is still a good volume of yaoi. It is. I would have preferred some more depth, but the characters are well done and the relationship is cute, and there is no real shame about it. It's fun and proud of that, and I find that refreshing. I find that sexy and fascinating. So yes, I liked it (_sip_). And, that said, I'm giving it an even 8/10.

A cute little read. So nice to read some lgbt manga with NO non-con! (yes!) The relationship is handled realistically and the characters are well fleshed out. This series is only three volumes so I'll definitely be reading the rest. :)

4 out of 5 stars! ^_^

Loved this! It was great to see Shuji find love. His daughter is so cute! Something about single fathers finding love again is just adorable. :)

the emotionally stunted hedonist is my cup of tea. as well as the cold awkward stoic that just wants to love and be loved, yes please. put them together and you get… uh… extra tea.

I thought this was delightful for a number of reasons, particularly in its bent towards realism over tropes and how much I liked both of the main characters. Happily recc'ed.

I picked up Hide and Seek Vol. 1 off my boyfriend's book shelf out of boredom whilst he did some university work and decided to give it a go. I've been amazed.

I had never heard of Hide and Seek before today so I thought that giving it a read would do no harm, it upped my reading challenge and killed some time. If I didn't like it, I didn't like it, but it wasn't what I was expecting at all.

Hide and Seek, Vol 01. follows a doctor and a sweet shop owner having a fling. Note that this manga does include erotica/18+ material. The story line reads well, even if the romance comes across quite rushed at times. The artwork isn't the best I've ever seen and it seems quite rough in some frames. It's not 100% pleasing to the eye, but at the same time, it can be appreciated in a strange way.

The only problems I had within this yaoi was two lines concerning LGBT that made me frown a little bit. Personally, I have no problems with them myself, but I know others will and would like to make the following two lines known:

- "I guess being gay is a trend around me"
- ".... being the target of a gay man"

I just want to ensure any fellow LGBT readers of this are slightly prepared for these in case these lines upset them.

It's hard to tell where the manga is going to go in vol. 02, mainly because there are so many routes it could go from this. Personally, this has made me want to read more because I want to see which route it takes, yet I know this may be a turn off for others.

This yaoi is one of those that does not follow the usual illegal tropes of yaoi, and I'm really happy to have found one that, for this volume at least, is pure and happy(ish).

I'd recommend this to anyone who likes yaoi manga.

I really love this series, but I was really unhappy with some aspects of Sublime's translation. Also, I was impatient to read the second volume, and so I ordered both in Japanese and I am SO glad I did. Not only was the second volume as good as the first, I don't have to be annoyed at the stupid Mr. thing anymore. Also, surprise, it's just more fun to read in the original, especially since I'm getting more and more used to more colloquial speech.

Regarding the series, I was once again struck how well done it is. It's really mainly a love comedy, but the characters' feelings are taken seriously and so their relationship feels real. And Tanihara is one of my favourite ukes - I love how his initial confidence starts to falter when it comes to the emotional stuff. They make a really nice couple, and holy crap the sex is well done. Really, really hot.

I'm already looking forward to volume three - and, because I will never shut up about it - the eventual series about Shunpei. ;)

I love this manga and I adore this couple, BUT I really wish they'd kept the Japanese honorifics instead of using Mr. here. Because it feels really weird when someone keeps using Mr. in English even though they're pretty much dating. Ah well.

Interested to see how the second volume plays out. I love how the guys are similar physically, but idk their faces seem pinched? I got side tracked by the art a lot of the time. hmm

I loved this one even more than I was hoping I would. The art is a little wonky, but it's stylized and appealing, and I like how handsome and even soft the doctor can look at points, despite his super grim default expressions.

I love that we get little glimpses of his sensitivity, and I was not expecting that emotional sledgehammer of the doctor clearly having a trend of getting his heart broken by guys who think of and treat him too casually. Tanihara is, like he said, exactly his type, from his handsome appearance to his careless attitude and casual approach to sex. It means he rolls with the doctor's double confessions - he's gay and he's attracted to him - and is perfectly willing to do some experimenting. It also means, though, that his heart isn't so easily touched.

The really, really good part is how mature all of this is. They know exactly what type of relationship they're getting into, and have explicitly talked about it. They're not nervous or shy about what they're doing. The doctor isn't any sort of victim; Tanihara has made it clear that they're just having a (possibly extended) fling, and while it's obvious that Saji finds that disappointing, he knows the risks and is choosing to go along with it.

I love the little bit of domesticity with Tanihara's daughter, and how well Saji gets along with her. It'd be so nice to see them form a little family, but I'm not totally sure how this is going to work out, since Tanihara is in the whole "well there's no future in two men being together" camp. It seems pretty clear that guy in the doctor's office was probably one of those ex-boyfriends Tanihara kept prodding him about, since he's not quite as immune to the doctor's charms as he's telling himself.

Definitely excited to read the next one. I hope the rest are as good as this one was.

This was one of the random series I got for christmas. Apparently this is a spin off series from Bonds Of Dreams, Bonds Of Love which I didn’t know till after reading. I haven’t read that series yet but will look into it.

I enjoyed this, it was a cute story and I liked the characters for the most part.
I liked Shuji & Takafumi and I’m interested to see how they develop in the next volume. I will say though that I would’ve liked to have seen a bit more interaction between Shuji & his daughter, but the focus was more on setting the foundation for the relationship in this volume so guess I’ll have to wait and see what happens.

The art style wasn’t my favourite but it was still nicely drawn. Also I don’t know if it’s just me but Takafumi seemed a bit oddly drawn in a couple of the panels & I can’t put my finger on what it is.

Overall though I liked this first volume and will read the rest of the series as there’s only 2 more volumes & I have them so why not eh.

Cute and quite realistic in some aspects (like the epilogue, with the decision of getting married or not). I also liked that they were both adults, that the ex-wife was nice and the man she marries for the 3rd time is decent and wants to get closer to his new daughter. That was very refreshing. Also, this is one of the few yaoi manga that involves children where I like the daughter. She wasn't annoying, she wasn't too childish but she was sweet and loved her father (who wasn't her blood-father).

On the other side, I am not a fan of how they first hook up. The father accepted quite easily the seduction of the sensei, and didn't even doubt to be the uke.

Except for that point, I liked it very much. The art was average.

What a great little Japanese romantic comedy of working class people. We meet Shuji who is a divorced dad working at a candy shop. He gets bored with life and is willing to do about anything to spice up the world around him. His daughter is very cute.

One day, she is sick and is taken to the local pediatrician, Dr. Takafumi. He is so serious, but good with kids. The two adults become friends.

What I like about this is the light-hearted nature of the story. It’s pure fun to read. The doctor is so serious while Shuji is a total ‘let’s have fun’ kind of guy. He is quite funny and I like how he tries to get a reaction from the doctor and it’s never what he expects and he’s the one reacting. It’s so well done.

I can’t wait for volume 2.

This was such a surprise. Though I was unsure of the art style, the story moved along and the characters made my heart skip a beat. I love the way Shuji (divorced dad and shop owner) lives life to the fullest. And Saji, the pediatrician, comes into the store sparks begin to fly. The story is about finding love and understanding the various levels of love (emotional vs physical). The way Shuji reconsiders his relationship with the Doc is interesting and shows human growth. Also, it's just plain funny at times! I am so happy I found this little gem at 2nd and Charles, will be buying the next volumes soon.

This is one of the best BL /Yaoi I've ever read. The main couple are both mature adults, with very different lives, who choose to have a sexual fling. A fling that starts to develop into something more as they get to kniw one another

It's so refreshing to have no dubious consent or non-con. And no high school. The sex steamy and explicit, but also romantic: Takafumi is experienced, but is gentle and considerate toward Shuji for his first time. I love how developed the characters are and the natural build in the relationship. And the art is lovely, clean and detailed. I cannot wait to start volume 2 and hope there are many more to come.

I’ve read this manga, and I’m still not sure if I like it. After the first couple of chapters, I even thought about not finishing it all together but then picked it up again after a little pause.

There wasn’t much of a story, and the drawing style was so angular with lots of sharp edges (as compared to “Secret XXX” or “Therapy Game” which I liked a lot more). I feel like not much really happened, and I can’t say that I liked any of the main characters that much... Yet, still I want to know what happens next. So strange... 🤷🏼‍♀️

What I enjoyed most about this series was that it was completely and totally consensual. No weird dub con. Yes, there was an odd moment where Doc said that once he started he wouldn't be able to stop himself, but by the standards of yaoi where usually one of the guys is saying "no" the whole time, I can let it go. This isn't a standard sempai/uke thing, this is an actual consensual adult romance.

If you are an avid read of yaoi like me, this manga by Yaya Sakuragi is going to be very different from what you are typically used to. One character is a single father and the other is a man an introverted man who is comfortable in his identity. Actually, they're both quite comfortable in their identities. Not much happens plot-wise but this was very enjoyable and I look forward to reading more from this mangaka!

Mannnnnn

The writingggggggg. It's really top notch.

You don't get this kind of well written, realistic dialogue every day with yaoi. I remember reading this manga in the past but happened across it again and decided to re-read it to refresh my memory. Takafuki is so sexy, the guy looks like the stiff type but he's actually a player! LOL, more like an elegant player.

The characters are so well written and I love the dialogue. Art is also very good!

I remember reading this years ago, and now it's available on comixology. I read it again and wow, is it hard to get past the art style. I also don't find it entirely believable, but I wasn't exactly looking for quality. Sometimes you just wanna binge on romance books.

Gosh this is a cute series. Really glad that these characters seem to have some sense and are able to express themselves clearly. Love the difference between Tanihara and Saji and how they can make things work despite being very different people.
