Riley Adams is what high schoolers would call a nerd: booksmart and shy, with zero fashion sense. Tristan Harris is the exact opposite: captain of the football team, and the hottest guy in school by far. To say they don’t get along is putting it mildly… But then Riley starts offering private lessons to make some quick cash. Sure, they might despise each other, but it’s a thin line between love and hate.
Did a bad acting, TikTok had made me read this book? Yes. Was it is terrible as I thought it was going to be? Also yes.
I will say, the beginning of the book was a lot better than the end of the book. I didn’t like the jumping time. I didn’t like this surprise pregnancy. I didn’t like the unfinished business that happened between part one, and part two. The dialogue was really bad. The storytelling was really bad. Basically, this is just a really bad book.
The story had potential but was definitely lacking.
The writing seemed especially immature after the time jump and just didn't feel right for someone in their 20s with a kid. Riley just flipping her emotions and changing her mind in a matter of a sentence or two. It didn't feel realistic, more aspirational.
I don't know the age of the author but it would make sense if it was written by a teen. If you haven't experienced heartache, adult responsibilities, having someone depend on you, un-sheltered reality then this makes sense. If this was written by an adult, then I have questions...
Also, 'baby cakes' is just such a cringey nickname.
3.75*** You can get it on Kindle now. A good read while simultaneously watching the show on CandyJar TV. The characters of “Private Lessons” translated well both on screen and in the book. (I finished the book before finishing the show).
This is a really good smutty YA read. I found the dialogue and narration to work well together. The characters were really like able and authentic.
You can tell the book didn’t have an editor and there are some odd word choices, grammatical and structural issues — but not enough to completely derail the journey.
It really fell apart for me at the FL’s reaction to the ML’s heartbreak move. Then the ending was a whiplash experience going from -15 to fuego in like two chapters. I could have also used an epilogue.
But I still wanted to know more about the characters after I finished!
