Raven Taylor never expected a trip to Scotland to shatter her reality and awaken the darkness inside her.

What started as a simple getaway with her best friend–a chance to escape and dig up answers about her past–quickly spirals into something far more than she bargained for. Dreams that feel far too real. A heat sparking in her veins that she can’t explain. Shadows that move when they shouldn't. Each strange occurrence pulls her deeper into a world she can’t escape, leaving her questioning if she’s losing her mind–or waking up to the truth.

And then there’s Kane. Brooding, infuriating, and impossible to ignore. He has secrets buried as deep as his scars and a gaze that could set the world on fire. He’s everywhere she doesn’t want him to be, pulling her closer until she’s no longer sure if trusting him will save her…or destroy her.

When whispers of ancient curses, forgotten magic, and enemies lurking in plain sight begin to close in, Raven learns the her power is a beacon, and something dark is hunting her.

Now, the lines between friend and foe blur, and Raven must choose. How far will she go to survive? What part of herself will she sacrifice? Because the darkness is rising–and it’s coming for her.

Sarah writes books that crack open the dark corners of the heart—and then light a match. A former salon owner turned full-time author, she walked away from her old life with nothing but a story she couldn’t ignore and a fire in her chest that refused to die. Her books are cinematic, obsessive, emotionally twisted, and laced with tension that will make you scream into your pillow.

She’s drawn to morally gray men, bratty heroines, and the kind of love that wrecks you before it saves you. You’ll find her writing late at night, pouring everything she’s survived into characters that don’t flinch.

When she’s not writing, she's chasing wild dreams, or trying to make sense of the messages the universe won’t stop sending. She believes in shocking plot twists, and the kind of endings you feel in your bones.

"my lord"

ahhhhhh what an ending to such and amazing start of this series.

•fiery fmc •hot broody mmc •mystery •magic •plot twists •adventure •banter •a slow burn thats worth it

the friendships, the chemistry, the adventure, the relatability, all perfect! but most of all the desire to be Raven is what got me the most. like damn, Kane is a MAN and to have his attention is a dream. Speaking of dreams come true... imagine discovering you have a family past in freaking Scotland that is LIFE CHANGING and includes you having magic?! ugh this was a great time. the adventure is fun and keeps you wanting more and on the topic of more...im gonna need book 2 ASAP!

What a ride.

Raven was supposed to travel to Scotland with the grandparents who raised her, but they pass beforehand.

She makes the trip with a friend and trying to uncover her family roots while also healing from a not so stellar relationship.

They meet a charming local and his mysterious and broody friend and hit it off pretty quick. The men take Raven and her friend on a tour and pretty quickly Raven starts to feel a little different.

Mr Broody and his charming pal happen to be good an research and assist Raven with uncovering her family secrets and end up unraveling more than she even bargained for.

✔️Found Family
✔️Found Magic
✔️Secrets
✔️Instant attraction, but with angst and tension
✔️Bantering banter
✔️Cliffhanger end

I know for a fact this book did NOT just end like that?!

Okay, now that that is out of the way I must say this is hands down an amazing book. I don't read fantasy. It's always been so hard for me to picture the wolds/characters in my mind. With that being said, this book is so easy to be immersed in. This is a longer book but it is also building each character and the world's up. But it is so easy to picture Raven and Rachel and the chaos they cause with poor Kane and Cam following behind.

Just when you think you know where things are headed Sarah will completely change course and have us coming up with different theories. and let me just say I LOVE IT! I love being thrown off course. I love being kept in my toes. I CAN NOT wait for book 2 to come out. Great job Sarah!!

This is a super slow paced story until about 500 pages and then it isn’t slow paced at all. Raven eventually grew on me but she and her best friend are pretty much chaos junkies and for me that’s almost a deal breaker. I also feel like her best friend exhibits bad friend behavior by pushing Rachel to drink alcohol when she had never chosen to drink before in her life and I think that Raven suddenly takes to the alcohol too quickly.
I like Kane and his best friend, but I do wish Kane didn’t have some alphahole qualities.
Some parts of this story are great others are glossed over and goodness the typos were somewhat distracting to me.
I would rate this a 3.75, I will likely read the sequel because I want to see how Raven’s powers develop and how her and Kane’s power’s sync. I also need to know if she learns about her parents real story…

This took forever to finish.

I feel so bad, but I genuinely took my time, my many hours to push through and finish this, so I’m going to be honest.

This was slow, repetitive and felt like extreme filler in most of it. There were few parts I enjoyed but most of it I felt bogged down by it.
Also, I am NOT a “Swiftie” and I seriously disliked every Taylor Swift reference in here. And there were mannnyyyy.
Y’all might like it, though.
I seriously disliked Raven. She was stubborn and annoying. She wasn’t fun and was constantly trying to prove herself but she kept putting herself in stupid situations that she knew were stupid.
Kane wasn’t much better. He was supposed to be dominant - at least that is the vibe I was getting -, but he came across as passive until something bad happened to Raven.
Plus, she got hurt quite a few times and he didn’t know? There are mentions of him being a professional follower, and the fact he heads a security firm and didn’t have tabs on her at all times? It just didn’t make sense.

Also this was so long for no reason. I wasn’t joking, it genuinely felt like filler for 80% of the book. The reason for 2 ⭐️’s instead of 1.5 ⭐️’s is because the last 13% was so good and did have me flipping the pages in interest.

I won’t be continuing this series, unfortunately. I’m sad about it because I really wanted to like it.

This book took me for a RIDE!!! The banter, the friendships & the men… OMG THE MENNN !!! This book has me wanting to take a trip to Scotland ASAP lol

In all seriousness though this book is pure magic from the very first page. This isn’t just a story—it’s an experience that pulls you in, wraps you in stardust, and refuses to let go. Poulsen’s writing is lyrical yet vivid, the kind that paints images so clear you can almost hear the music in the background and feel the midnight air on your skin.

The characters are achingly real, each carrying layers of emotion that unravel at just the right pace. I found myself laughing, tearing up, and holding my breath in moments so beautifully written they felt timeless.

Every scene feels intentional—like a melody that builds toward a finale you know will break your heart and heal it at the same time. This is the rare kind of novel you’ll want to reread just to live in its world a little longer. The ending is soul crushing, but in a good way. It makes you want to jump right into the next one full speed ahead.

Sarah J. Poulsen didn’t just write a book—she crafted a piece of art. If I could give it more than six stars, I would. MIDNIGHTS is amazing !!!

You're going to want book 2 NOW after reading this.

OMG what was that ending???

I promise no spoilers are in this review.

I LOVED this book it's kept me guessing the whole way through which is normally hard to do.

The characters are amazing and so relatable. The chemistry between some of them is chefs kiss. Love that it is set in this time. Kane is definitely the new BBF for all others to beat.

She's a thick book but totally worth the read you will not regret it that's for sure.

I read a LOT of fantasy and this one is my new favs that is until book 2 which I can't wait for. Honestly it can't come fast enough after that ending and the questions and theories I have they need answered.

I'm going to have a book hangover after this read I ran here after finishing this book to leave feedback that's how much I liked it. If you are on the fence about reading this book do yourself a favour and dive right into this book you'll love it.

This book should have never left the editing table. How, HOW can one person write “smirk” SO many times?? I want to throw the book at the wall. It could be a decent book with major rewrites.

10/10 this hooked me from the beginning.

I immediately fell in love with Raven. I love that she’s a no bullshit kinda girl. I love her fight and her fire. I also totally understand where her need to keep everyone at arms length comes from. I love how towards the end of the book she was coming into her power and was understanding it.

As for Kane🥵 that man knows he’s fineee. I love how he tries to fight how much he wants Raven but let’s be fr it’s not working my dude. There is still something about him that I’m unsure about. I have so many questions that I’m hoping get answered in the next book.

Cam.. I liked him in the beginning but had some fishy feels about him like I knew he was hiding something. The fact that he’s fae? Nahhh couldn’t haven’t seen that coming at all. I do love the relationship he was building with Raven when she was in Nveri but all those secrets?? I don’t like that he wasn’t telling her everything.

The ONE person I didn’t like from the beginning was Mike (aka Mike-n-Ike) I had baddd vibes from the get go. I have my thoughts about the end of the book I think he was somehow involved in what happened to Raven.

Sarah I absolutely love how your mind works within your books🙌🏼 I seriously cannot wait to see where the next book takes us🫶🏼

I am freeeeee.

This book was FAR too slow. Someone needs to check out a map of Scotland too. As a girlie that lives in Scotland, Edinburgh is not round the corner from the highlands, pls sort the geography out, this was so annoying.

I thought I’d like Kane but nope I was so wrong, he gave me the ick throughout every single one of his chapters . He had no substance at all.

I know ravens in her self discovery era but I needed her to discover herself quicker. The last 20% of this book when she was hanging out with Cam was the best bit tbh. If we had that happen sooner it would’ve been a lot better!

This was a big miss for me, it was too icky n cringe.

I LOVED this book. I legitimately couldn’t put it down. I’m a very big Sarah J Maas fan, and this book has alllllll the same vibes. Magic, hot men, strong female characters? Yes, yes, and yes. And I love that it’s in Scotland and the hot men HAVE ACCENTS. I seriously can’t wait for rest of the series.

Fun premise, bad execution

It's not well written, I get the trying to ad the spice and the longing but we dont need every other line to be "i press my thighs together" or his view only being about his penis. Characters showing up without back story or introductions. I really wanted to like it but I skipped ahead a LOT and I've read very questionable things.

I think this book is perfect for people wanting to dabble into fantasy. Through 60% of the book it’s all modern day things with the hint of other worldly. It has a slow steady pace with you getting to know the characters until you’re about 60% in and it starts picking up and things start really happening. Some answers and more questions keeping you at the edge of your seat wanting to know.

I usually read more heavily based fantasy books (not in modern time) but this was still a good read for me. ❤️
Can’t wait for book 2!

I went into this blind and I’m so mad I thought this was a stand alone. As my kindle percentage increased I’m like there’s no way this is a stand alone there is way too much we need to cover, and then the ending happened. Literally I flipped my kindle onto my bed and put my face in my pillow and screamed.

I enjoyed this book very much. It’s a very dense book but I wasn’t bored. The characters are dynamic I did kind of get lost with the characters in Nveri. Sarah does a good job at orienting you on who is who. Now I’m pretty sure we all knew some of the major plot lines and who the major players are but that didn’t take away from the story like a lot of predictable books do. I was invested the whole time. I love that Raven is not a wilting flower. Kane is delicious and broody we love an emo king ;)

Let’s talk about the Taylor Swift lyrics scattered through the book and the chapter titles… genius and I love supporting a fellow swifty. It’s nice to have a friend 🫶🏼

I was also excited when Utah was brought up, I feel like Utah has been in so many books lately and it will never shut up when a book I like talks about the state I live in. It also includes Scotland and not only is my name Scottish but my grandparents lived in Scotland. So I felt very at home in this book.

Sarah that ending was diabolical and Nightshade better come out asap. Which is also funny I used to have a blog with that name. So many fun coincidences ❤️

Insert the most dramatic *chefs kiss*

I don’t know WHERE Sarah J Poulsen found the AUDACITY to write a book that good and then write and publish a DIFFERENT BOOK before giving me the sequel to Midnights. I ate this book the f*ck up and am suffering from such a book hangover after reading it.

I don’t even know what else to say. I don’t know how I knew, BUT I FRIGGIN KNEW. When Cam was being super suspicious when Raven was asking who the king was, I KNEW it was going to be Kane. AND THE WAY SHE ENDED IT TELLING US???? *chefs kiss* x 10000 and I fucking knew Meathead Mike N Ike was evil, yuck!

I rated this book 5/5 because 10 million/5 wasn’t an option.

THANKFULLY, Sarah spoiled us with a taste of the sequel at the end of the book and I am beyond THRILLED that it picks up where Midnights left off.

If you love a slow burn with a magical plot, and want to read about beautiful Scottish men, do yourself a favour and read it.

I freaking loved this book! I was hooked so hard I finished it in just four days. Sarah J. Poulsen’s tone is perfection, fun, witty, and so methodically thought out while still feeling effortless. Her chapters read like your bestie spilling her juiciest tale, while the guys’ chapters bring the steamy heat. The banter is sexy and hilarious, and the suspense and adventure keep you on the edge of your seat. you truly never know what’s coming next. It’s well written, unputdownable, and gave me all the girls girl energy I love.

Absolutely love the fun banter in this book between character, I found myself laughing out loud a few times. I enjoyed the many hints that there was more to be discovered as the characters and their stories were unfolding. I don’t love cliff hangers though, impatiently awaiting the next book in the series now.
