Elemental Dinosaurs: Rise of the Guardians by The WanderingApe is the second book in the Elemental Dinosaurs series. The first book introduces readers to a world where dinosaurs are associated with elements which give them powers: fire, ice, thunder, poison, and gold. It isn’t necessary to read the first before reading the second. Rise of the Guardians takes place in this world.
The book is geared for elementary children. The main character, eleven-year-old Connor Reed, is in science class where the instructor lectures the children about space exploration. After Connor’s attention is drawn to a constellation labeled “K2-18b: Could There Be Life” he imagines a planet where dinosaurs exist. Then, the boy is transported to another world.
In this world of prehistoric beasts, he is given the task of collecting the six elemental stones needed to restore balance to a world dominated by Poison. With each stone Connor collects, he gains a trait that will help him succeed.
The story is well-written. The author creates a compelling world that I could see would fascinate dinosaur-obsessed children. I wish the author had given more details in certain areas such as when Connor collects a flower he needs to continue his journey, it isn’t clear when he gives it to Frostplate.
This series appears to be leading up to the emergence of a game much like Pokemon. In my research, I found an instance of Elemental Dinosaurs mentioned as a parody of Dinosaur King, a card-based video game. However, I am unable to discover if this book is tied in with the parody. This book would make a good choice for reluctant readers who enjoy dinosaurs and Pokemon, particularly the dinosaur-themed versions.

Elemental Dinosaurs: Rise of the Guardians: A Storybook Companion to the Collector’s Guide
by The WanderingApe is an easy to read chapter book that should appeal to young fans of dinosaurs and adventure.

The author wastes no time in getting straight to the action, and the rest of the book continues at a similar pace, as protagonist Connor follows his quest.

The book features admirable themes around finding your inner strength and combining your positive characteristics for the common good.

As an older reader, the length and pacing of the book did leave me wondering about a few unanswered questions, but the younger, target reader might not feel the same way and may just enjoy the adventure.

As a storybook based on the Collector’s Guide it’s probably a good idea to read the Collector’s Guide first, to familiarise yourself with the dinosaurs that feature in the story, although you could read this book first then find out more about them afterwards.
