Witty Women: Wise, Wicked, & Wonderful Words

Rate this book
Poets and politicians, homemakers and diplomats, they're women and they're witty. Whether providing sage advice with a twist, a clever saying, or an acute and funny observation, the women collected here take aim and always hit their mark.

Bibliographical note: There is no mention of Armand Eisen being involved with the selection in this book but it seems to be generally noted elsewhere that he was so the catalogue entry reflects that belief.

I usually enjoy books that have a selection of witty comments on a variety of subjects but this one does not seem to be one of the best selections chosen. Many of the comments are dull and unexciting even though many are by notable people.

The odd comment is interesting such as, American poet Nathalia Crane's 'There is glory in a great mistake' even though I cannot subscribe to that view because in my career there are not many mistakes that I might have made that fit that bill! And Nancy Reagan's comment sounds rather like an oxymoron to begin with until analysed, 'I believe that people would be alive today if there were a death penalty.' Once worked out, I suppose it is understandable.

I can thoroughly subscribe to Nancy, Lady Astor's 'One reason I don't drink is I want to know when I'm having a good time.' As a non-drinker (simply don't like any of it) and having been at parties where I was one of the few who knew what was going on, I can see what she is getting at.

Golda Meir's 'Don't be humble. You're not that great' certainly puts the person to whom it might have been addressed in their place. And Ann Landers' (I'm not sure which one for there is no date attributed to it because this is a pen-name originally used by columnist Ruth Crowley and later taken over by Esther Pauline Lederer) 'Nobody knows what anyone's marriage is like except the two of them - and sometimes one of them doesn't know' is at least amusing, and in some cases possibly very true.

There are plenty of quotes to analyse but one last one from me is Gertrude Stein's 'Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.' This could very well be true in these difficult times in which we are living!

Great book of witty, feminist-ish quotes! Read through it myself, jotted down some favorite one-liners, and passed on the book to a friend who would definitely enjoy it.
