Stryker has been looking forward to finding his fated mate for decades, but from the start, nothing goes as he’d dreamed. His mate refuses to even meet him, denying the mate bond without giving him a chance and actually running away to avoid hearing the vampire’s pleas.
Joseph sees humans who throw themselves at vampires as weak and stupid, and he has no intention of giving up his free will simply because a vampire orders him to. His heart has been through enough without being forced to pretend he loves someone, so he flees. He wants true love and sees no logic in trusting fate to simply drop the real thing right into his lap.
But Stryker refuses to give up and pursues his mate, prepared to do anything to make Joseph see what he’s really running away from.
3.5 HEARTS--"Chasing His Mate" is a first in the Year of the Moons series. It's my first time reading this author. Though this is the first in a series, it seems interconnected with other series. It felt like I dropped into the middle of story for a couple of the secondary characters but I was able to follow along. Mostly...
Set in a fictional world, human Joseph has run away from his hometown to escape his troubles - he has no family and his abusive lover died. The aftermath continues to trouble Joseph, he doesn't trust easily and doesn't want to live under another man's thumb ever again. Enter a vampire/shifter couple that visits Joseph to let him know he has a mate through tasting his blood. Joseph is anti-vampire and being forced to mate. (Though why his blood is left around for a vampire to taste is never explained especially since he never wanted to mate).
He learns he is mated to a vampire lord named Stryker, who is currently on a mission for the king. Joseph flees. Stryker chases under the disguise of a human named "Stefan". Joseph is stubborn and pushes Stryker away. This is a recurring theme for the entire story. But the power of sexual attraction can't be denied.
I enjoyed the story mostly and would've rated higher if Joseph quit having the silliest tantrums over the silliest things. The last tantrum was unnecessary. The first was understandable. I get that he's a runner, he doesn't believe in human/vampire mate bonding and he still has his issues from his last relationship.
And my favorite part of this story was Stryker being upfront about his guise before anything got serious, Joseph's questions about mates (not just dropping his drawers once he's found) and Stryker not taking the reins, understanding to think with the head upstairs instead of the one downstairs.
I liked Stryker. Some of the lengths he went through to get his mate were unnecessary (the eye drops). The sexy times were hot. It was not the usual vampire claiming 'you're mine, do as I say'. Stryker was a decent beta hero.
Memorable? Not really.
But it's decent brain junk food when you're in the mood for paranormal and don't want an overly complicated plot.
Alright, so here's the deal with this one. I liked it, I really did. However, I did NOT know it was going to be all forkin' formal. Many of you know, I don't read stories that have appellations. One of the biggest reasons I don't read historical. I hate the Lord, Your Grace, Mi'lady, Your Highness, Prince, Princess, King, Queen, and all that other hierarchy bullsheep. But, I started it, so I had to finish this one. I just took out the words "my Lord" :) I hate the pretentiousness of it all. Like people are supposedly better than someone because they were born into wealth. Ugh.
Back to the story, I really wish there was more background. I found myself questioning a lot.
I did love Joseph. Man, I loved him and his actions. Spot on! I would have been the same way. I can't say I feel the same love for Stryker. I actually never forgave him. I tend to need A LOT of groveling after major stunts are pulled and it's of my opinion that Stryker didn't grovel enough.
Declan? Yeah, I hated his meddling ass. I'm not a nosy person, so when I read about someone sticking their nose in someone else's business it pisses me off. Then to make someone feel guilty for their CHOICE and name call? Come on now.
I am actually interested in Gregory? I think that was his name.
Will I read on in this series? Who knows. If the 2nd one was out today, I would probably buy it, but since it's not I can't tell you when/if I'll pick it up. I did like the writing in this, so I'll see what other works this author has for me.
I cried. A LOT. Because of Joseph and his feelings. I loved when he got mad.
I am just now seeing that this is part of an ongoing series. So perhaps some of my questions would have been answered in previous books? I wish I knew it was part of a series. *grumble*
First Re-read 12 February 2016 New Favorite Quote: "It's nice to view the world with a sense of wonderment as a child. The harshness of reality is revealed all too soon, I think."
First Re-read 12 February 2016 I didn't finish the rest of this particular trilogy last summer, so I wanted to re-read this one to remind myself of Stryker's brothers before reading their stories.
It was delightful to get to visit Valladora again.
New Favorite Quotes: "and I saw no other way to get out of the grave I'd dug myself." "Not every hole is a grave."
"Life might've changed him, shown him a path back to you."
Original Review 1 July 2015 I'm still just completely in love with this world. It's such a fun place to escape to. And I love that even after this many books, the stories are still unique and fresh.
Favorite Quote: "You're ruining my sentimental speech, which is supposed to inspire you to throw me on the bed and ravish me." Joseph drew closer. "I'll do it no matter what. Keep going.
It was pretty good...a little bit of a downer bc 90% of the book was them being apart and therefore depressed. The last little bit when we got to see them together and happy it was nice. The "chase" is usually some ups and downs but we know that both people are wanting eachother but it just wasn't so clear here.
