Bizarre Bonds

Rate this book
Four inexplicable supernatural bonds. One rogue monster on a rampage. What's a girl made of sunshine to do?

For once in my life, everything was going perfectly. I'd finally confronted the man who'd caged me, my teammates and I were seeing eye to eye, and a couple of those friendships were coming with some very delicious benefits.

So of course my powers had to find another way to surprise me.

I've accidentally marked all four of my distractingly handsome teammates with my glow... and these new bonds seem to have declared no take-backs. My happiness has left the men I've been falling for very unhappy.

With more strange monsters stalking the countryside, one of them determined to bash up an entire city, our personal problems need to take the backseat. But can we still work as a team if no one's willing to play for keeps?

*Bizarre Bonds is the second book in a new urban fantasy trilogy from bestselling author Eva Chase. If you love a sunshine-y heroine, hot dangerous monsters who'll soften only for her, and plenty of laughs, action, and steam, dive right in!*

Eva Chase it really quite hit-or-miss for me 🤷‍♀️ I had a good time with book 1, but books 2 kind of dragged for me and the characters started to get annoying

I think it's almost impossible not to love Peri! She's optimistic, caring, patient, loving and she's so positive! However, I'm glad that in this book not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Peri is learning that you can't be happy and positive all the time, that the less pleasant emotions are just as important, and that all those emotions need to be respected. I loved her journey. Just like I loved the journeys of the guys! They each have their own challenges in this book, especially when it comes to figuring out what they want from and with Peri. The mystery of the rifts also gets more and more interesting. I can't wait for the sequel!

I liked book 1 enough to read this book, but honestly I don’t think I care enough about the characters or story to continue. It just dragged on and I’m kind of over it. 🫠

About a 3.75/5.

Each of the characters have struggled a bit with who they were. Uncontrollable powers, fear of the harm they could bring, not fitting in, pasts that they're trying to run from in various ways... by the end of the book, our main characters have finally come to accept who they are for the most part, as well as accept what they can do, and who they want to be moving forward.

We have a 'villain' in this book who is wreaking havoc on a city, and though they'd LIKE to catch her, they can only keep up enough to put out the fires she's left behind. While trying to sort her out, they're still trying to solve the mystery of these weird rifts and the creatures coming out of them. The shadowkind that is destroying the city seems to give them a couple of clues, but none they can make sense of.

While I like the new characters this series brings us, I don't feel totally connected to them like I have with characters from Eva's other series. I felt that Hail changed direction quicker than I'd have expected him to, though I understand how and why he did in the story when he did... I just felt it should have lasted a bit longer, his change of heart, rather than in one scene. Internally, yes, he had been on the fence for a bit, but on the outside, it would have come as a surprise to anyone 'normal.' That could just be me, though. Despite this, he's kind of my favourite character. He's a bit sarcastic and droll, which is more like me than the others, so I relate a bit!

Anyway, I just felt I didn't love the story in this one, I guess. I definitely liked the character development, I like the characters overall (even if I don't really "click" with them), I'm happy to see characters from the past series in this one (and in such active roles), but the plot was just kind of... 'meh' to me. Maybe it dragged a bit?

Oh well. On to the last book!

Meh

I'm having a really hard time with this series. I didn't review book 1 because I wanted to give the series more of a chance before I knocked it. This author is one of my favorites and I thought maybe she just had a rough start with this series. Unfortunately, that isn't the case.

I've put some thought into why I'm not enjoying this series and I decided that I don't like Peri. She is just too "goody 2 shoes". Nobody can be happy all the time. Nobody can turn everything bad into something positive all the time. Few people try saving " bad" people. Yet, Peri is all those things. She's like the perfect robotic woman. It's just weird. She does something bad accidentally, and you can cue in the meltdown because "she didn't mean to hurt anyone" . At least the guys are more likeable because they seem more real. They can acknowledge their likes and dislikes, whereas Peri pretends that everything is good. Even when she finally acknowledges that everyone is entitled to their feelings, it's done in a way that makes her appear "perfect". I feel like all that "perfection" makes her unlikeable because she seems fake. Too good to be true.

As far as the plot goes, it hasn't been exciting. There's nothing to make you say "OMG! What's going to happen next?" It's just MEH. I will read the next book, but I have to admit that I just don't really care what happens. Maybe it'll get better?

good

WARNING! Cliffhanger! This one rates a good 4.5/5 on my trauma scale.

Picking up where book one ended, Peri and her bonded are trying to come to terms with their unexpected, and in some cases unwanted connection.

Meanwhile the odd rifts are becoming more common, releasing warped shadowkin into the world. It’s in investigating those, that Periwinkle finds a use for her unusual talent, and how she and her mates might just have a way they can use their abilities for good.

So not much progress is made as far as investigating the rift issue goes, but we do have a lot of character development in this volume of the trilogy; as Peri and her marked males learn about each other, and some things about theirselves.

There is still plenty of action though, as the rifts continue to spew trouble into the world, and Peri is there to try and help, along with a few familiar faces from Eva Chase’s other Shadowkind World books.

This one has a few racy scenes as well, as Peri gets closer to the rest of her mates, so consider yourself forewarned!

An engaging tale, this is NOT a standalone, and must be read after book one (though it’s not necessary to have read the other Shadowkind books, it may be beneficial). Fans of reverse harem, monster hero’s, and Eva Chase’s other series will enjoy this tale.

Book Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars!

Book: Bizarre Bonds by Eva Chase

Series: Pack of Outcasts book two

"𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦, 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐 𝘢𝘮."

A supernatural group of monsters trying to safe the day! I love being back in the world of monsters. I love it even more now that a few of my favorite characters from the previous books are showing up! It's so much fun to see them all work together

"𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵. 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳. 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦, 𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦?"

This has been an adorable and fun series to read so far. I always love the diversity of the characters and how they come together, being a team, forming a family. And I love the sweet spicy scenes you get in between

"𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵. 𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘮𝘦, 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘪, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐'𝘮 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘰 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭."

I want to thank the author for sending me a physical copy to read and review 🖤 you're books are loved!

I loved this book and I cannot wait for the next one. Peri grew so much in this story right along with her guys, and it made me love them even more. The emotions were strong, the action kept me turning the pages, and the chemistry between everyone pulled me in. I really liked seeing how their bond developed, and even with some questions still left, it makes me even more excited for what comes next.

Bizarre Bonds is the 2nd book in this new RH series. The adventure continues with Periwinkle (who has a pure, childlike innocence) and the men she's tied to. As they continue to learn to work together while also figuring out how to overcome their individual struggles. There is definitely more of the shadowkind vs humans in this book than the previous. Overall a fantasticly entertaining read!

Middle book, middle feelings

It took me way longer to finish this book than it should have. I put it down for large stretches of time and didn't have a burning desire to pick it back up. I enjoyed the first book in the services, but Im not invested enough in this world to even read the final book.

This one takes everything from book one and cranks it to feral. The emotional bonds deepen, the stakes skyrocket, and the relationships get complicated in the best, most heart-clenching ways.

The heroine steps fully into her power here — not just magically, but emotionally — and watching her navigate trust, betrayal, and loyalty is addictive. The chemistry is intense, the found-family vibes hit hard, and the cliffy moments had me whisper-screaming at my Kindle.

I enjoyed book one in this series a lot. I liked how the moral of the story is to be kind and understanding but the FMC got really annoying in this book. She was still very naive and innocent but in an almost annoying way now. That sweet and cute character from book one had not undergone any character growth at all sadly. And you can’t even say ah well it’s a smut book, because the smut was basic and over and done with very quickly. For a reverse harem trope I couldn’t believe how vanilla the spice was, or how quickly it seemed to be over in every encounter.
This book has made me sad because I am an Eva Chase fan on the whole.

Read this if you want an open door but not overly explicit spicy book of monsters that don’t have monster appendages in said spicy scenes.
It’s also an easy read, something you can follow along with very simply and just enjoy.

I personally recommend reading it rather than listening to it, because although the female narrator does a great job at creating the characters voices- she is too convincing on the FMC and gives her annoying qualities more bite making them harder to ignore.

This book was so sweet and honestly incredibly therapeutic, particularly all of the internal realizations Peri has throughout this book about how to be herself with her team and what makes for a loving supportive relationship. It was comforting to read. I did feel like the plot did not progress as much as I would have hoped for and the spice was pretty limited, which is why it wasn't 5 stars but still a very nice comfort read.

This book was a great follow-up to Mistfit Monsters! Bizarre bonds starts out EXACTLY where the first book ends, and starts running right out of the gate. After Peri accidentally bonds the guys, she can’t help but feel awful about it. She does everything she can to try to make things easier on all the guys so that they aren’t consumed by her emotions. It’s honestly heartbreaking how Peri thinks about herself, and because of that, how she thinks the guys view both her and the accidental bond is skewed.

Meanwhile, the quest to figure out what’s happening with the weird shadow portals continues. Outside of the first one they were sent to, they end up going to two different ones. Efforts are made to try to prevent them from moving, but I can’t go much further than that because we’re headed into spoiler territory.

Once again, Ms. Chase absolutely knocks it out of the park with this book. The continuation from the first book to this one is flawless. All the story beats, the drama, the tension, the yearning and pinning: incredibly done. The emotions this series, this book in particular, has pulled out of me? I don’t even have words to describe it other than it’s a roller coaster of emotions. Having the POV of the guys, especially after the bonding incident is so valuable, because it shows exactly how it’s impacting the guys, instead of only getting Peri’s point of view. While yes, she can feel their emotions, she still ends up misinterpreting their feelings.

This one ends on another cliffhanger, and I am EAGERLY awaiting the next to find out what happens next!

I received a complementary copy of this book via BookSirens. All opinions are completely my own.

I really enjoyed my time with Peri and her men in Bizarre Bonds! It was great seeing her men finally starting to accept the bonds she accidentally gave them in book 1 and come together for her in both the bedroom and outside of it. There was a lot of character growth in this book all around, and it is exciting to see where they'll go from here. My only complaint is the book did feel like it dragged a bit at points. The story didn't progress much even though the characters themselves did.

Peri definitely struggled a bit, but I think her talks with Sorsha helped her a lot in regards to her feelings and how much progress she was making to tip the scales back to her being "good". It was awesome seeing more of Eva's characters from other series jump into this one. I would have liked to learn a little more about Viscera and what her final thoughts meant for the future though.

It was tough seeing how Jonah thought his demotion was a negative thing at first, but I'm happy he realized what Rollick really meant by doing it. He learned a bit about himself through it all, especially that he can help shadow kind even better by not being a teacher at the school.

Raze, Mirage, and Hail have made leaps and bounds of progress as well in this book and I'm so proud of them! No spoilers, but they've come such a long way from how they were at the start to the end of book 2 in all aspects of their lives.

So yeah, Bizarre Bonds, that was a rough start. There were so many emotions flying around. But I struggled a little with the way all the guys kind of got angry and distant with Peri. It was not all her fault. There is a lot of complicated feelings and events that happen in this installment. I really enjoyed the growth that all of the characters had and wanted to scream at some of them when things did not go the way I hoped. This is a really good book and I am enjoying the story. I cannot wait to see how this concludes in book three. Eva Chase is a really good writer. She leaves us hanging onto the edge of our seats and this is no different. I look forward to jumping into book three. The narration is spot on, both narrators bring the characters to life and I feel truly emersed in the story. I feel like Vanessa Moyen really personifies Peri. She has a voice that truly brings the character out, sounds so really and makes the emotions and acts come to life. Aiden Snow is the same, he does a great job of bringing life to the characters and his voice is smexy and alluring, same as the males he is voicing. They are both really talented. But we all know that they alone are not the reason why this is so good. The story has to be exceptional for it to truly work and mesh. I love all installments of Shadow kind but this one has such a different take to it that I fell in love in Book one. Can't wait to listen to the conclusion to Peri and her males story.

Highly recommend this listen and read. It is fun to do both.

Bizarre Bonds is the second book in the Pack of Outcasts, an urban fantasy/paranormal romance series. This takes place in the author’s Shadowblood world, but can be read on its own. I received an advance review copy and my thoughts are my own. Thank you to the author for my eArc.

The Lovely: This book focused in on the FMC’s growth as she tried to get a better handle on her powers. I liked that because she, and her powers, were so unique to the world, she didn’t really have a guide to follow or someone to teach her. I felt for her struggled and loved the realizations she made later in the book.

The Mundane: I wish the FMC would have more time with the MMCs, especially in the first half to -two-third of the book. They all felt so distant from each other (I think intentionally) but for me it slowed the progression of the story.

Recommendation: This was a cute, sometimes funny, series, ,although this second book did amp up the emotions. It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. Book three of the trilogy is due to be released in December of this year (2025). If you like a lighter urban fantasy romance with grumpy x sunshine to the max, I think you’d like this book.

Oh my gosh. This book was amazing! Peri has grown so much since the first book but she’s still full of sunshine. Her journey of not only her emotional states but accepting who she is and what she can do has been incredible to see. Are there still times where she struggles yea but who doesn’t. Her character is written with so much realism that it’s as though she’s real and facing these challenges with you. Her positive attitude is always a pleasure to read especially when the grumps of her men cough cough popsicle decide to be a pain.

The men in her harem are the perfect mix of protective, annoying and full of their own challenges and emotions. Some have started to warm up more while others are still playing push and pull with their feelings. But they still all care about peri and we see this especially towards the end. Are there still moments where I want to throttle one or more of them yes of course there are because it wouldn’t be a good story without a rollercoaster of emotions.

Eva had once again delivered an amazing story that sucks you in until the very last page. Did we get another cliffhanger that leaves you staring at a wall for hours, of course but that’s to be expected and I cannot wait to get some more answers.

Bizarre Bonds had me grinning, groaning, and gasping all at once! Periwinkle (aka Peri) is back and shining brighter than ever. Still the sunshine ball of chaos we love, but now with a little extra oomph as she navigates these crazy new bonds. Watching her juggle her feelings, powers, and an accidentally bonded harem is like riding a rollercoaster while trying to drink hot cocoa, thrilling, a little messy, and totally addictive. And the guys… oh boy. They’re the perfect mix of protective, stubborn, and just complicated enough to make you want to shake them one minute and hug them the next. Seeing their walls slowly crumble and their emotions bubble to the surface had me swooning, laughing, and yes… occasionally yelling at the book.
Eva Chase once again proves she can craft a story that sucks you in from page one and doesn’t let go until the last page, and then the cliffhanger leaves you staring at the ceiling, plotting how to cope until the next installment. Between shadowkind chaos, rift mysteries, and bonds that test everyone’s patience (and hearts), this book had me hooked.
If you love quirky, heartfelt characters, emotional rollercoasters, and a story that keeps you flipping pages like a mad scientist on espresso, Bizarre Bonds is an absolute must-read. I can’t wait to dive back into this world again!

This book ends on a crippling cliffhanger and I cannot get enough. Eva Chase is the queen of cliffhangers and gripping endings and I love every torturous second 🤩

Bizarre Bonds picks up right where left Peri and her pack of outcasts in book 1, coming to terms with their bonded connection. During this, more and more Shadowkin are finding their way into the world, and the group discover they may be able to use their abilities to help with this growing problem.

I love that Peri really starts to come into her own here and finds ways to use her unusual powers in a positive way, but also a way that makes her feel good. The character development is fantastic in this book, with a lot of growth across the group (individually and collectively). We learn a lot about Peri and her bonded, and this really enhances the depth of the relationships between the group. There is definitely a bit of spice in this book as the group gets closer, and it is sprinkled in with the plot nicely.

Again, this ends on a cliffhanger and I can’t say more without spoiling, but I genuinely enjoyed it and it fits the plot well. I loved this book and enjoyed it even more than the first. I can’t wait for the next book!

Thank you so much the Eva Chase for the eARC and proof of this book! I will forever adore your writing!

In this book all of the men Peri marked started to avoid her for various reasons. More rifts keep opening and they all go to investigate and monitor them. Rollick collects the shadow kind that come out and has Peri evaluate their emotions. They seem to get more angry every time them shift and eventually start to disappear after they shift, like they never existed. Peri is attacked and almost killed by Gloss at school. Jonah gets let go but will still work on the team. They start to investigate another right when a wave of shadows come out. A higher shadow kind comes out, she can talk and likes to destroy everything. They try to catch her and fail. Peri comes to the realization that it’s okay to feel emotions other than happiness. She talks with all of the guys and they solve their awkwardness and are all in a relationship together. Peri makes a plan to catch the higher shadowkind. She lures them away, but she is starting to fade. Peri is able to catch her with the help of her guys and her powers. She talks to the girl and it sounds like she was compelled through the portal and told she would have a home. She fades. So the question is, who is compelling them and why? The book ends with the rift getting even bigger and then tipping over and cover the whole town in a wave of shadows.

I was so excited to jump back into Periwinkle’s world in Bizarre Bonds, Book 2 in the Pack of Outcasts trilogy.

In Book 2, we get to see the aftermath of what Peri did and the struggle that comes with the new bonds. Peri has always struggled with containing her power and she ends up hurting those that she cares for the most.

Mirage, Jonah, Hail and Haze all struggle with the new bond in various ways and though they know Peri didn’t mean to, is what they feel really them or the bond?

They all must work together to stop a new shadowkind that is made its way through the rift and causing mayhem but can they come back and work together as the team they once were?

I feel for Peri, she just wants everyone to be happy but she learns throughout the book that it’s not normal to be happy all the time and the guys slowly start letting Peri back in and see that she actually sees them and accepts them for who they are.

After seeing Peri’s relationships with Haze and Mirage blossom in Book 1, I loved getting to see our man Hail’s walls come down and Jonah finally allowing himself to feel his feelings in this one.

After that crashing cliffhanger I am excited to see what happens next in their story!

I was really looking forward for this book after the cliffhanger of the first one. Periwinkle and her men were put in a bit of a bind at the end of the first book with their unintentional bonding. They all have to take a deep look at themselves and their perceived place in the world while still dealing with the strange rifts that keep on popping up in stranger and inconvenient places. The more they learn about the rifts and the strange shadowkind that comes from them, the more complicated it gets. The characters have to confront their world views and their own experiences through their newfound lenses and experiences. There’s a lot of personal maturity in all the characters while they try to come to terms with the bond between them all and what it might entail for them as individuals and also as a group as they have to work together as a team. I think it made them all the more lovable once we start to know what made them who they are.
It was also great to have more involvement from Rollick, Sorcha and the Shadowbloods.
There’s another cliffhanger at the end of this book but it just makes me want to read the next one even more.

I think that this is a pretty emotionally intelligent book. Or at least leaves a lot of room for the characters to develop. It starts off with the guys all pretty upset about the new bond especially when they discover that not only can she feel their emotions and they her’s, they all have to stay fairly close to one another or Peri will pass out from pain. Slowly the guys start to come to terms with it as they are sent out repeatedly to try to deal with the weird shadow creatures including a higher shadow creature who just wants to destroy everything.

I think it was great that Peri has her moment of realization that trying to be happy all the time isn’t healthy and that other emotions are just as valid and important. It was definitely the catalyst for the relationships to progress. The spicy bits were great, good chemistry. Raze is my favourite character for sure. He’s sweet and protective but isn’t necessarily sweet in bed. Mirage I have a harder time engaging with as he just feels very childish to me. I understand his whole thing is being focused on fun and play to avoid his past but it doesn’t always land for me. Jonah and Hail are both pretty good, complex characters. Ended with the void portal expanding to encase a city so that will be fun for them to deal with.

My review is written after listening to the audio version of this book

In this, the second instalment of the Pack of Outcasts series, we learn more about our five main characters as their backstories are revealed. Eva Chase adds depth to the characters and makes their behaviour more understandable.

Periwinkle aka Peri is always so concerned for others, but always doubts herself. She yearns to make a difference and improve things for everyone, despite the obstacles she faces. Peri’s ability to control her powers is improving, as is her belief in herself. She is hopeful that with practice, she will be able to do only good with her powers,

She and her guys are coming to terms with the bonds they've formed and working together to try to contain the "different" Shadowkind emerging from the strange rifts before humans realise just how many Shadowkind live amongst them. But with the emergence of a new threat, will that be possible?

I'm enjoying the slow build to the romance and steam between the five of them, and I'm also enjoying meeting some of the characters from the earlier series. Another interesting storyline that is to be continued. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.

The narration by Vanessa Moyen and Aiden Snow is, as always, excellent!
