Memories and Murder: A Silvermoon Retirement Village Cozy Mystery

Rate this book
Alice on holiday doesn't mean trouble stays at home.

After the recent events at home, Alice decides that a holiday might be in order. Along with her friends, and protege Vanessa, she heads to the south of France. But she is keeping a secret from her companions. One that may change their lives forever.

Before she can act on her plan, a surprise from the past sees her on board a boat with relatives of someone she knew decades earlier, and Alice is tasked with one thing. Find out who of the passengers on the boat murdered Emilie Allard four years earlier.

Soon Alice is embroiled in a mystery that Agatha Christie would be proud of, as clues mount up, and the evening ends in a shocking murder.

Memories and Murder is the seventh story in the Silvermoon Retirement Village cozy mystery series. If you like your books with smart, feisty main characters, then you'll be glad you met Alice.

Writing is one of those things that I have always done. I vividly remember spending most of an English exam writing a complicated adventure story as the answer to an exam question. I passed the exam, either because of, or despite the answer.

I tend to write the story that comes to mind, regardless of genre.

Many years ago while in France, Alice Atkinson solved a mystery on board a boat owned by the Allard family. Emilie Allard’s brother was murdered and Alice identified the killer, earning the everlasting respect of Emilie and a nice reward. Now a nonagenarian, secret owner and resident of the Silvermoon Retirement Village in New Zealand, Alice has found safety and friendship among the residents and an able assistant, Vanessa. However, someone from her past has found Alice and is attempting to kill her, putting everyone else in danger as well; and Alice forms a desperate plan to rectify the situation. She takes three close friends and Vanessa on a supposed holiday in France and is reunited with the Allard family along with a replica of an old friend, Renard, the boat which played a pivotal role in Alice’s financial fortunes, and another unexpected surprise. Emilie Allard died four years previously and her daughter wants Alice to solve her murder. Will Alice be successful and thus protect her friends or will she have to leave behind her former life to remove the threat?

This book is the culmination of a trilogy revealing Alice’s past and the present danger which has resulted in her current plans. Alice is extraordinary and she has led an amazing life. Rodney Strong’s books are always so entertaining and unique, and Alice is beloved by many of his readers. While this book could be read as a standalone, the three books read in order make for a complete story of a very important event in Alice’s life and I highly recommend them. If you’re new to Rodney Strong, I think you are in for a real treat and if you are familiar with Alice, you won’t want to miss the latest entry.

A fast paced but short book to read in an afternoon. Once again Alice is her no nonsense self and in no time at all she wraps up the case.
