Ruby's Time Out

Rate this book
Where in the world was she and how did she get wherever this is? Now what was she going to do? Ruby didn’t know what she was going to do with being alone? Tracy her son had left for the big city life vowing never to return. Ever since Orion his father had died on the road one night he had gotten more and more distant. She and her husband Orion had been re-en-actors of 18th and 19th century living and arts. They had loved the old ways and even went into teaching it. Now Ruby made quilts, soaps, lotions and other things to sell over the internet. With the way the economy was going she was getting less and less orders all the time. She made sure she was always stocked on supplies for her crafts as well as food and other goods. Living up in the middle of nowhere you made sure you had supplies especially in the winter. One could get snowed in for weeks on end. Ruby was planning on going into town again the next day to Church. Only in good weather was it a good idea. Only when she pulled down the road a ways the road ended in a great forest of what looked like huge old growth evergreens of all varieties. She got out of her car and made her way through the trees. Good thing she wore flats today. In around a third of a mile the great trees thinned out to show nothing ahead of her but miles and miles of open rolling prairie. Before her was a land that teamed with animals. She could see herds of elk, deer and of all things buffalo. A pack of wolves could be seen in the distance taking down an elk calf and all of a sudden she felt very naked. She was dressed for Church and didn’t have a weapon anywhere on her person. In the days that followed she walked her land and beyond finding nothing but old growth forest and plenty of wild animals. The neighbor that lived one quarter of a mile away as the crow flies house was there but not the neighbor. His pastures were there well most of them. And it was also surrounded by the great pines. The only choice was to go down to the Lewis/Clark valley and see if the town or a town was still there. Looks like she and the dogs were going for a long walk.

Ruby and her husband, Orion, were 18th and 19th century re-en actors. They loved the old ways and were intent on becoming more self-sufficient on their own farm. Their son, Tracy, was not very happy with living a simple life out of contact with civilization. When Orion died, Tracy blamed their life style and Ruby and left, vowing to never return. Ruby has continued her and Orion's plans and makes quilts, soaps, lotions, and other handcrafted items to sell over the internet and sustain herself. After a strange night, Ruby heads to town only to find her way blocked by old growth trees. Trees that should not be there. She travels toward the Lewis Clark Valley and discovers she has either been transported back in time or slipped into a separate dimension.

Ruby is a strong willed women, intent on not only surviving, but prospering. Even if it means "inventing" some modern conveniences for herself and he family. She is an anomaly for the time but refuses to back down to anyone. A wonderful story of time travel, western, and survivalist story. I hope to read more of Ruby and her adventures in the old west.
