I remain an eternal optimist who dreams of meeting the right guy and getting married forever. Despite last year’s nasty divorce and the subsequent restraining order, which I consider but a road bump to my eventual happiness.
Garlen Underwood is the reclusive orc who recently moved in next door.
On the first day of winter, my deadbeat, criminal, ex-husband shows up on my front yard and shouts a litany of threats. But before I can call the cops a horned, shirtless orc arrives on the scene and punches him to the ground.
Three things happen at
Garlen and I meet in person for the first time. He stands much too close, inhales my scent and morphs into a snarling, raging, green-muscled beast who repeatedly thunders “my bride.”
Second, his orc companions appear out of nowhere, tackle him to the ground, bind him in heavy chains and drag him through the snow to the mansion next door. They let me know that orcs historically kidnap their brides in the dark of winter, therefore they will keep Garlen caged until spring?
Third…I realize that snarling orc is the sexiest male I’ve ever met.
And at the end of winter break I was all set to teach with him at Blackwood Academy. Because he’s the new hire and I’m his boss.
Oh hell. How is this going to work out?

Michele Mills lives in California and leads a life of quiet, G rated desperation with her husband and two sons. In an attempt at a fulfilling, R rated inner life that does not include Disney movies and Nickelodeon; Michele reads and writes filthy romance and, well...filthy romance. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Thank you BookSprout, and Michele Mills for sending me this advanced review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I loved this a lot. There were cozy bits, tense moments, and even some wild action! The pacing was fantastic and I really enjoyed all the characters. I'm looking forward to the possible future pairings too. There was also some great discussions about racism, and coming together to overcome it as a community.
Ellie is wonderful. Strong, and not afraid to tackle anything. I adore how she cherishes their differences instead of being afraid of the Orcs. She has seen Garlen at his worst, and doesn't hesitate for a second to support him in whatever way he needs.
Garlen struggles through hell and back to get through the winter. It is a soul deep battle to try to hold his primal Orc nature in check. He cares so deeply, and is so careful and a consent king. I appreciate that he loves Zoe like his own daughter. That is not always the norm for step parent situations.
While there was insta fated mate love, I really liked that they were able to take time to get to know each other first.
Hands down my favorite character is Loki. OMG that dog is the cutest little fuzzbutt on the planet. He needs lots more dog cookies!
The orc next door, Garlen, can tell at first sniff that Ellie is the bride for him, but since it is the dark of winter, he needs a little help to stay in control and slow this romance down to a human pace. His family physically removes him from her presence, but love finds a way to blossom through covert notes passed by his adorable pet corgi, Loki. Annoying ex-husbands, local Orc gangs, and even well-meaning uncles can’t keep these two apart for long.
This is a sweet, charming, and cozy romance with an HEA that any monster romance reader will appreciate.

I personally couldn’t get into it, I put it down a lot and took breaks. It really wasn’t very romantic or spicy. Mostly him in chains the whole time and a lot of teaching via zoom.
I liked the book until around 80% then it went downhill very quickly. The book wasn't very smutty, but not completely clean, so there's that. Spoilers below, sorry, but I have a lot of issues with certain situations ;)
Ellie was a fine character, I liked that she was confident and competent. She was also very positive for a person who just got found by their abusive, alcoholic ex-husband. Her acceptance of the orc's winter madness was commendable, she didn't judge something that Garlen couldn't control and it was very sweet that she worried about him all the time. But her POVs annoyed me with frequent mentions of her size (she was fine with is so why she was always thinking about it?) and strawberry-blonde hair (when I brush my hair I don't think about the color of every time I do it). Also, the book wasn't short and Ellie said that her daughter was her priority, but we didn't get much of interaction between them. Even during the winter break Ellie seemed like an absent parent, six year old Zoe was on her tablet or playing with her grandmother all the time. The only scenes where Ellie was caring for Zoe were ones when she did her hair for school...not really mother of the year ;) Garlen was alright, he was a huge and strong guy, but was also a kind and gentle scholar. He wanted to keep Ellie safe, even when he needed to protect her from himself. I got that he needed her consent, he didn't want to hurt her or make her resent him for their union so he stayed in chains for the whole winter, because he couldn't control himself. But that turned out to be a lot of bullshit, because they did fool around for most of the winter and he didn't try overpowering her and mating with her once. She was blowing him and it was fine, so why not just consummate the relationship at this point? Waiting for spring didn't make sense when he wasn't hulking out in intimate situations, Ellie wanted him badly and he knew that so the consent was there. Oh, and don't get me started on the whole surprise wedding. Shit sounds cute, but I would be furious, and I don't remember any mentions of Ellie liking surprises. And I was so pissed that her mother planned all of it, especially when the mother said that Ellie was talking all the time of planning her own wedding someday. Wasn't it a fucking clue that Ellie wanted to plan her wedding?! What the fuck was that? Oh, and very romantic to ask her to marry on the day of the wedding, what if she wanted a little more time for that? Garlen didn't want to pressure her into sex, but pressuring her into marriage was fine with him. She loved him so she wouldn't say no, even though she didn't have any say in it, they just put her on the spot. She even said that they didn't even talk about marriage! The next thing that irked me was the unrealistic FBI agent. Which agent would tell a mother of almost kidnapped child that the child's father said that he didn't give a shit about the child? Not one, that was unnecessary cruelty for an already shaken woman. And which criminal says something like that during interrogation by the way? No law enforcement would ask him if he cared for his daughter, so why say shit like that? It made no sense. Oh, and apparently even the gang said to the FBI that they were appalled by it, what? So the gang was arrested too? Or FBI just called them for a fucking comment? Also, the Great Debate sounded great...but the whole proceedings and the arguments were silly. The guy against integration with humans brought out statistics of some shit on a fucking tablet. Yeah, human made electronic tablet. It you want to stay apart from humans then fuck off from the human made shit. Oh, and it was a great idea to isolate themselves and keep from integrating with humans, especially that they need humans to fucking reproduce. All the elders should have just told the Bloodtrees to fuck off with their bullshit, because the integration would make it a hell of a lot easier for orcs to find their brides. All the young people learning about orc culture would be much more tolerant of their differences, so the next generations of orcs would have an easier life. Oh, and he Bloodtrees were ashamed that Marcus tried to kidnap his child to fuck with the integration effort, but they were completely fine when he was fucking with his ex-wife, when it was mentioned that the Orc Code of Honor or some shit makes it reprehensible to abuse/hurt women and children in any way. The wedding night was a bit disappointing. It wasn't very sexy, Garlen calling Ellie's vagina a wet channel made me cringe. For such a long wait it was just meh, one quick fuck and a fade to black. The last thing that seemed a little inconsistent. I got why Dane wasn't hulking out for Laurie, she wasn't fertile anymore, he was older too, so the need to breed wasn't there. But what with Keric? He liked Anna and was a young orc. They met during winter, so why he didn't hulk out? He wasn't as much into her as Garlen was into Ellie, or what?
Orcs Do It Better by Michele Mills hit many of the things I love most about Orc romances—this is one of my favorite niche genres, and I was excited to dive in. While I did enjoy the story overall, I had a few issues that kept this from being a full 5-star read for me.
First, whether it was intentional or not, I really appreciated the parallels between the treatment of Orcs in this world and the real-life history of how Native American tribes have been treated by the U.S. government. The Orc communes, separate schools, the prejudice against their traditions—it drew some powerful comparisons that gave the story unexpected depth.
That said, I felt the pacing was off. We spent a significant amount of time on Garlen’s restraint—literally and emotionally. The repeated reminders that he was chained “for his own good” started to wear thin after a while. I think that part of the story could’ve been trimmed without losing the emotional connection being built between Garlen and Ellie.
Then, after that slow burn, the ending jumped way too fast into the HEA. It felt rushed and unbalanced compared to how long the earlier development dragged.
The world-building around Orc culture was intriguing, especially their commitment to preserving their traditions. But that same emphasis made it harder to believe that such a big cultural fact—like older males still being able to mate or not going into frenzy if their mate couldn’t reproduce—was unknown. That felt like a contradiction. If their culture is that carefully preserved, shouldn’t that have been common knowledge passed down through generations? It made Garlen’s need to isolate feel more like a plot device than a logical cultural concern.
Still, despite the issues, I did enjoy the romance and the concept behind the story. Garlen and Ellie’s bond was compelling once it finally got going. I ended up rating it 4 stars instead of the 3 I initially considered, because when it hit, it did hit—and I’m glad I stuck with it, even if it took a few restarts to get through.
Orcs Do It Better gets into something I haven’t seen much in a fated-mates romance: what if you have to keep the couple apart? That’s the issue Garlen and Ellie face when he meets her and goes into full-on possessive mode, which happens to orcs in winter in Mills’ world. But they’re about to jointly lead a groundbreaking program to teach orc history and culture to humans, so Garlen can’t just cart Ellie off into the mountains for months like orcs used to do when they experienced mating fever. How Garlen, Ellie, and their friends and family handle both the need to show how orcs can manage their compulsions and the desire to better integrate human and orc societies, is the heart of Orcs Do It Better.
Despite the “stay apart” theme, Mills is assured enough as a writer to find ways for this couple to communicate and grow their relationship, learning how being together is better for Garlen than utter separation. Garlen is smart and assured, as is Ellie—their struggles are against their situation, along with resistance to the changes their educational program could bring to the orcs and their world.
These books are adorable reads, and Mills creates a host of likable secondary characters in this book. There’s a bit too much repetition of certain thoughts and feelings—I feel like this is something taught in romance-author classes that can be relied on way too much—and that bogged down the story at times. But there’s such a breezy feel to Mills’ world and characters that this orc romance still charmed me.
In ‘Orcs Do It Better’, author Michele Mills offers a unique approach to the basic wild-Orc-meets-fated-bride-in-winter trope. The uniqueness isn’t necessarily in the he-scents-her-and-goes-crazy sense, rather it is in the whole world setting in general. Instead of the usual A) over the top, almost cartoonish world or B) warlord, sci-fi heavy world, the author give us C) an absolutely realistic, believable, and relatable world.
Along with this absolutely realistic, believable, and relatable world, the author also delivers realistic, believable, and relatable characters—main and side characters alike. I was invested in Garlen and Ellie finding their happily ever after from the moment I read: “A hulking orc, at least seven feet tall with curved horns and elongated tusks that protrude from his lower jaw, slams into Marcus, sending him sprawling across my snowy front lawn.” —That is definitely *swoon* worthy.
I’m so happy Keric and Anna are next in the series. They suit each other.

This was ok but it didn't really grab me in any way. I felt Ellie is kind of boring as a character and it felt like her size was the one thing focused on constantly (and I'm saying that as a plus sized girl myself). I would have loved to see more of her as a mom and her interests aside from dealing with her crazy ex and being curvy which is all we basically get.
Then there's the romance, while the premise starts off strong and sexy, it just got boring to me half way through. There's no sense or urgency or bonding and even though we're told he basically can't control himself during the mating urge.... he basically does that and still does slightly sexual stuff with her? so which is it? why not let them get their freak on when it was clear Ellie was very into him?
Also.... we have to wait for the end to get any type of smut and what we got was kind of vanilla and boring. look, most of us are reading these books for the fantasy romance thrill and some smutty good times which is why it felt like a let down that we have to wait until the end for barely any payoff.
While some parts were syrupy sweet, the rest felt kind of basic to me and I didn't see how Garlen and Ellie even worked as a couple. Also the whole thing with her living with her mom was a bit eh to me.
And Michele Mills has done it again! Orcs Do It Better is the first in the Orcs Love Curvy Girls series and it was so fun and utterly delicious! Ellie and Garlen are such fun!
Ellie has had it a bit rough recently, but she remains the eternal optimist, ready to embrace new things, and continue to enjoy life to the best of her ability. Her new life with her mom and daughter are all she thinks she needs, until the Orcs move in nextdoor!
Garlen is driven, focused, dedicated, caring, and just a bit snarly when he scents his forever! He wants to his best for the future and for properly educating the next generation, and the spanners thrown in the works become challenges to overcome to get that HEA.
There's some light drama, intrigue, chemistry, slow and fast burn love, friendship, overcoming of obstacles, truce talks, sharing of knowledge, and so much more! This was a fast paced, easy, and engaging read, and I hope you enjoy it just as much as I have!
P. S. I adore Loki!!!!!!!
P. P. S. I LOVE me an epistolary romance! Give me all the letters and the mutual pining!!!
P. P. P. S. I'm so excited for Anna and Keric's story!
2 stars...once again I ask myself WHY? Do I read Michelle Mills. *facepalm* This story was no different. Cons: (warning ima rant here cuz daymn I feel cheated!) Repetitive! MM books just read like stereo instructions and have the same information regurgitated over and over. Stunted characters with very little depth. **** Ok so for me personally, THIS is the biggest con: there is very little spice in the whole book!!!!!! Seriously it was at 90% of the way in that the characters finally get a little orc spice. WHAT the actual HELL? Come on!!! We are all clearly not here for the literary prowess of this type of book. Duh. we are here for some Orc spice!!! Damn. Then nothing....a little bit just after the middle but it was just nada for the most part. I can't even. Let the fking Orc just get his winter freak on already and let him swoop her ass up and drag her into the mountains! I think we are more on board with that in this book than 42 paragraphs about consent. I give UP on this author.
Pros: man, if this had some spice and didn't read like stereo instructions it had a good plot to build off of.
Ellie and Garlen are the first couple in this new series, and they are wonderful! Their relationship starts off uniquely, and then develops through old-fashioned love letters, which was refreshing! This new world is layered and interesting. I am sure there will be new depths revealed as the series progresses. A Wild Orc in the heat of a winter mating frenzy led to a lot of details about Michele’s Orc reality, and it is very interesting and thought provoking! This is slow burn, but once the flame gets lit, there is plenty of spice. Lots of romance to be found here, too! A sweet, but precocious, child, a stylish grandma, a super intelligent corgi, as well as hot orc cousins round out the core family. There is a mild villain to add more tension, but good always triumphs, and Ellie and Garlen get that HEA! I am looking forward to the next book in the series, as the Epilogue gave us a peek ahead!
I think ,like me ,you will fall in love with the Irontree Clan of Orcs. Garlen and Ellie meet in the dead of winter, so yes there are a lot of complications to work around. Especially when Ellie's ex shows up to cause trouble. How is he supposed to protect her when he's in a cage in the basement. I loved Loki. He adds a special presence to the story. Zoe is cute and honest with her questions. Loved Jonus' teasing . Dane and Louise add an excellent twist. Lots of smiles to this fun rom com. I liked that Ellie is comfortable with her size. She has confidence, is smart and looks at things out side the box when they need solutions to all of the problems that plague them. Garlen is very protective and smart. He has a lot to prove and I liked all of the ways he did just that. HEA of course, steam to the eventual romance. Loved the suspense. I'm curious how Keric helps Anna .

Ellie had moved away from the life she once shared with her ex, to start over. She the head of the Social Studies dept at a private school, that is looking integrate orcs, teacher and students, into one school. The school has hired Galen Irontree, a orc professor, to teach their history to human students.
When Ellie's ex show up, breaking the restraining order against him, she is about to call the police, when gorgeous, huge orc comes to make a citizens arrest. When gets look at Ellie, he starts roaring my bride and advancing toward her, it take all four of the men with him to subdue him. She has just learned this is the new teacher.
This is a slow burn story, Galen needs to be chained up for the rest of the winter to prevent him from harming Ellie, his mate. This was an awesome read, due to circumstances, they had to get know each other before consummating the relationship.

Spice with a side of warmth and empowering body positivity! Ellie is smart, warm, funny, and vulnerable she struggles to feel beautiful in a world that deems larger women as somehow lacking. The verbal damage her ex left her with is lovingly and logically healed by Garlen's wholehearted appreciation both physically and emotionally.
Garlen is swoon-worthy in how he truly sees and cherishes Ellie. His honesty, steady loyalty, and patient care make him the kind of MMC who feels safe and sexy all at once. In his mind there is no doubt that she is worthy of love, desire, and admiration just as she is. He’s not just an orc—he’s a partner, a protector, and a genuinely good guy who proves that yes, orcs really do do it better.

Orcs Do it Better by Michele Mills us a wonderful beginning to her Orcs Love Curvy Girls series. Meet Ellie, a curvy history teacher who has moved across state with her mom and young daughter to avoid her alcoholic, abusive husband. Garlen is the new orc teacher she has hired to co-teach an orc history course at the new elite charter school. Unbeknownst to her, he and his cousins and uncle have moved next door. When her ex starts trouble, the orcs make a citizen's arrest but Garlen goes feral after taking in her scent which alerts him that she is his mate! The two figure out how to get to know one another even though he must be restrained for 3 months. This is a slow burn that ends in a big bang!.

Ellie has moved to this new town to get away from her ex and get a good job. Her mom moved with her to help her with her daughter. When her ex unexpectedly showed up insisting on seeing their daughter when he wen to put his hands on her Garlen from next door jumps in with his cousins to help her. The next thing she knows Garlen is yelling that she is his Bride and his cousins are putting him in chains to keep him from kidnapping her. Ellie finds something so intriguing about Garlen and something about him draws her to him. This book is written so well the plot is put together so well, and the chemistry between these two is a lot of fun to read as well keep you on the edge of your seat. I so cannot wait to read about his other cousins as they get their stories.
I loved this story of Ellie, and Garlen. They were made for each other. Her Ex husband was a real monster, in every sense of the word. Insulting, abusive, and a man with to many addictions, he falls in line to use her and his own child to get money for his debts from other criminal elements. Garlen has to fight hard to stop his 'dark of winter' drive to grab Ellie and mate with her regardless of her state of mind, and the Purist believers of the Orc race, do what ever they can to sabotage the integration of human and Orcs history being taught to Humans. A strong team effort is formed with Garments family, and the School they teach at. Great chemistry with a few characters. I loved the HEA ending. Trish A.
Enjoyed this newest book Orcs Love Curvy Girls from author Michele Mills which came with all the excitement, humor, thrills, spice, romance, family dynamics, and witty dialogue I’ve come to expect. Orc MMC Garlen Underwood is MFC Ellie’s new neighbor and they meet after he intercedes in a little of her ex drama on the first cold day of winter. One whiff of her scent and it turns into a MY BRIDE … leave now or I will impregnate you with my son moment, and chaos ensues. Great story that was written well with perfectly crafted characters and all the enlightenment on Orc mating customs to please the most discerning reader. HEA, and I can’t wait for more books in the series!.

This is the first book in this new series by Michele and I have to say that I am quite addicted.
Our main characters are Garlen and Ellie. Their first encounter together is off the charts. I love their relationship. Not many people orc or human would be able to keep up the restraint that these two showed. Their very foundation is built on Orc traditions. Ellie's understanding and compassion to honor these boundaries is a true testament of her feeling towards Garlen. 💜🔥
Some parts of the story did go on a tad to long, but the wait was worth it.
I hope that all the Irontree clan have a story to tell. Michele, I can't wait until the next book comes out. December is tooooo far off 🤣.

I loved this book. It was such a fun romance! Great world building and wonderful characters. I loved both Ellie and Garlen. Their first meeting, along with the other orcs was great.. until he lost his mind (but still great for me). I liked how precise and structured the orcs' citizens arrest of Ellie's ex, Marcus, was. I would have expected it to be more savage/monster-y. And I swear I made a huge happy sound, too, when Ellie encountered his adorable fluffy corgi, Loki. I liked that orcs lived openly in this world, and that Ellie had hired Garlen to teach about orcs at school. I was hooked from the start and enjoyed seeing their relationship develop over the course of the story. There was also suspense and danger. A great start to a new series and I'm excited to read more. 5 stars
I tapped out on this one, and my final straw was the Corgi being called a messenger breed. A Corgi. Are you kidding me? I grew up with Corgis, I’m Corgi obsessed, and whatever “Loki” was supposed to be, it wasn’t a Corgi. This author has clearly never been within sniffing distance of one.
Corgis share a gene pool with Huskies. Would you dare try to write a Husky a messenger breed? Absolutely not. Corgis have the same level of chaos, just without the height. These little dictators would unionize before they fetched your mail.
Calling a Corgi a messenger is like calling a cat an emotional support animal -they could be, but only on their terms and mostly while plotting your downfall.
I refuse to live in a world where Corgis are reduced to postal workers.
Enjoyed reading this book! Garlen and Ellie were looking for the same thing and found it in each other. Love and acceptance and a way to bring the 2 species people together.. From the beginning I didn't agree with how they handled Garlen but it made for a good set up of them exchanging letters and really getting to know each other. I liked that there wasn't any fighting, the Great Debate was awesome! Such a change from other monster stories that I've read. All the characters were interesting and I can't wait to read Anna and Keric's story (December is so far away though)
Ellie and Garlen were set to teach the first Orc/Human integrated education classes at the Black Oak Academy when things took an interesting turn. He's her neighbor who comes to her rescue when her ex comes to cause problems, and things take a crazy mates turn. This is a fun, paranormal romance with interesting characters and a story that held my attention from the first page until the last. The writing is good, and this monster romance had me cheering Ellie and Garlen on to get their happily ever after. Orcs Do It Better is book one and a fabulous start to the Orcs Love Curvy Girls series, and I can't wait to read the rest of the books. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
I liked the book. Just some things dragged me out of the book. My 6 year old went outside to talk to our random orc neighbor by herself and I just said oh when I found out. Dude gets Orc Lust (I dont know what to call it) from seeing his mate in a dress, but can live with her for months without consumnating the deal and it is fine. At Christmas, they have 2 months of him being chained, but the chains dont come off until March 20th or 21st.
Overall everything is cute and I liked it. I just wish someone that pays attention could read this before it is published to point things out.
A fantastic start to a new series. The story gives alot of background on the world in which it takes place and introduces the reader to a group of wonderful characters - from the 4 cousins and uncle to the grandmother who is rockin to a very adorable messenger corgi. I can't wait for the rest of the series. Ellie and Garlen make a beautiful couple, and their relationship is built on more than just the mate frenzy which adds so much to the story.

This is the first book in a new series by Michele Mills. When Ellie and Garlen first meet he comes to her rescue. Her ex is back and he is after something. This is the worst time for them to meet. It is winter when orc's suffer from their mating frenzy. Ellie is Garlen's mate. Now when Ellie and her daughter need protection most Garlen most he is in chains. This is a great read with strong characters and a cute dog.

This was a fun and engaging series opener and I love how open to human and orc integration Ellie is. When she meets Garlen, he snaps. Turns out she his fated mate and he has to make it through the winter, fighting his primal instincts to not kidnap her and bond with her in some remote cave ;) Expect to get caught up in the excitement, drama, danger, family, an abusive ex, hot orc/human romance...and the cutest dog, Loki. I really enjoyed how this one unfolded and can't wait for the next book :D
Garlen and Ellie Single mom, curvy woman, crappy ex husband, sweet caring mother, a possessive and protective orc, family, sweet, original, romantic, steamy, and happily-ever-after. This a wonderful story were two species work to make change for understanding each other's culture. Add in the orc mating frenzy in the dark of winter and it adds to the stories twist and turns. I really enjoyed this book.

Orcs Do It Better is the first book in the Orcs Love Curvy Girls series. The story is about Ellie and Garlan. They are very different, not just because she is human and he is an ORC, but also because of their life experiences. But they also have a lot in common, as both are teachers, at the same school it turns out. This is a slow burn romance that has you laughing, crying, melting your heart, and a lot more before the HEA. I really loved this story and can't wait to read the next in the series.
