Andrea Clemons prefers to keep her feet firmly planted in reality. She'll leave the daydreaming to her friend Lauren, an aspiring fantasy author. But when mysterious circumstances leave Andrea stranded inside the pages of her best friend’s fictional world, they’ll both have to rethink the difference between reality and imagination.
Between accidentally stumbling into super villain battles, attempting to befriend angsty protagonists, and learning the weird laws of an alternate universe, getting home is the least of Andrea's worries. In order to survive—and maybe maintain some of her sanity—she'll have to rely on her wits, her ability to suspend disbelief, and the hope that maybe—just maybe—Lauren can still find her across dimensions.
Full of friendship, adventure, and a lot of heart, Spiralbound is a love letter to teen writers—and the friends who make writing worthwhile.
Abby Wright is originally from Louisville, KY, but is happy to currently call Jackson, TN home. When she's not writing or scheming new book plots with her writer friends, she's likely off at her day job, attempting to control the chaos that is a class full of hyperactive preschoolers. She likes the combination of jobs, though - no one helps you brainstorm unhinged new story ideas quite like a four-year-old child.
She's been writing for the past twelve years, but she's never been magically sucked into a book, nor have any of her friends. At least, not that she knows of...
This is such a fun read. Lighthearted and sweet while engaging and dealing nimbly with heavy topics just the same. It's pleasantly gripping and flies by! I read it digitally and had no idea how long it was until I liked it so much I bought a hard copy for my home. 😉
Genre-crossing into teen friendship, bio- and found-family, coming-of-age, light magic, "superhero" but cleverly different than the overdone Marvel way (though I love that too). Definitely worth a read for all ages and the whole family.
Promising new YA author. Can't wait until she publishes the sequel.
An incredibly fun read! Very engaging and filled with edge-of-your-seat action. I definitely got sucked into the world of Spiral City so quickly! The book is not just surface level plot — it’s also filled with deeper subjects that middle school and teen readers (as well as adults!) would enjoy! I would highly recommend this book to any young reader, as well as anyone looking for a lighter, but enjoyable read.
I felt like this book was really the perfect blend of Magic tree house and Chris Colfers series the Land of Stories. I feel like this was fun to read and very Meta in every sense. I would definitely recommend this to any middle schooler I found who wanted to pick up something new and relatable. I found this totally endearing and hope to see more books from this author in the future.
Abby Wright's debut, Spiralbound is cute and that's absolutely a wonderful thing.
In a genre filled with romances, this book relies on more than romance tropes to tell a story. This book is about the friendship between an inspiring author and her best friend and about Lauren's characters.
When Andrea get pulled into Lauren's story, and one of Lauren's characters gets pulled into Andrea's place, they have to work together to figure out how to get everyone back to their rightful places.
This story doesn't rely on the standard tropes to solve the problem. Everyone has their flaws and it's pointed out. Andrea acknowledges that Lauren has weak areas in her writing. Lauren accepts that she can't fix things by herself. Even Lauren's characters aren't a golden trio where everything goes smoothly for them.
I had trouble putting it down and ended up reading the book in two days. (Only because I had to eat, sleep, and get some work done.)
I can’t stop thinking about this book. It’s one of those rare gems that makes the world around you completely disappear. The kind you start reading “just for a few minutes” and suddenly it’s 2am and your heart is tangled up with fictional people.
The story follows a girl who gets pulled into her best friend’s novel (literally), and somehow the author makes the entire premise feel not only believable but deeply immersive. The characters are layered in such a human, moving way. I saw pieces of myself in so many of them. And to my surprise, the parents might’ve been my favorite characters of all. They added such richness and warmth and complexity in a way that’s so rare in fiction.
This is the type of book that deserves a movie adaptation, but honestly, no movie could fully capture the magic of what’s on these pages. It’s clever, heartfelt, wildly creative, and beautifully written. If you’ve been looking for a story to completely lose yourself in, this is it. You won’t want to come back.
