An emotional non-fiction containing tales about various Dutch people and the losses of their pets. Definitely a sad, yet also wholesome read. Most of these people clearly care a lot about their pets.
I do recommend this book, however I mostly recommend it for dog lovers. Despite the cover depicting various other species than dogs (e.g. cats, horses, rabbits), this book really contains 90% chapters about dogs. There are a few brief mentions and chapters dedicated to other animals, but this is very much a dog lover's book, as is obvious as dogs appear to be the author's favorite pet.
As someone who also loves cats (maybe even a little bit more than dogs) I was honestly pretty displeased that one of the only sections about cats features a very unsympathetic interviewee who doesn't seem close with her pets at all and doesn't seem to bat an eye to replace a deceased cat in a moment's notice. So cat people already barely get featured in this book, and then one of the only ones we do get is unsympathetic as hell.
Honestly I'm not even sure why this chapter was included as it can be quite emotionally devastating for someone processing their pets' loss (the target audience for this book) to see a pet owner care so little about their cats. Maybe this person was featured because the author wanted to highlight different perspectives on pet death, but honestly, it feels wildly out of place when all the other chapters are about people who are deeply loving and dedicated towards their pets. And, again, this was one of the only chapters that was about an animal that wasn't a dog, so this didn't exactly paint a flattering picture of cat lovers.
Aside from this one chapter I do think this is a solid book, but, like I said, I mainly recommend it if you love dogs, because other animals are featured very little.
