Rating: 1.5/5

I make an effort to be largely critical of writing styles/techniques, rather than general things I don’t like about the plot. In this case, however, I have make some comments on both sides of things, as one clearly begets the other.

I felt that all of the characters were very weak and flat. In fact, the only character who felt truly developed and gave me a sense of what to expect from him was the “faceless sociopath” mentioned in the description. He at least had some depth to him. Unfortunately, he reminded me an awful lot of Sylar from Heroes, and I kept picturing Zachary Quinto.

I did not like Blue as a character. Even though her character changes throughout the book, it felt like it was forced and choppy—a classic example of telling instead of showing. Even when she supposedly had her breakthrough of being in love, I didn’t feel anything at all. And she didn’t seem to have a significant reaction to the big revelations at the end of the book. Sure, her character has some dialog to that effect, but it didn’t feel real.

I’ll grant that Shababy did a good job of giving Kasey his own unique voice, and that’s something that can often be fairly difficult. It’s a voice that is very repetitive, sometimes redundant, and entirely focused on trying to convince Blue to “have confidence.” It started to get on my nerves after the first couple of times, and was really annoying by the time we reached the point when Blue had “changed.”

The other characters seem to be either cookie cutter copies of Blue or just not present enough to really command attention.

In general, I just wasn’t impressed by the writing. Shababy utilized dialog for most of her world-building, which I generally don’t have a problem with. But it didn’t sound like her characters talking; it sounded like nothing more than continued narration that happened to have quotes around it. The main plot didn’t really get engaged until halfway through the book, and the opening scenes were bland enough that I found myself skimming—particularly since every other paragraph (on average) was about Blue feeling nothing, or seeing nothing in other people.

Overall, I wasn’t impressed. It was an interesting enough story, but I didn’t find it at all engaging.

Is there any color more vibrant than blue? And is there any character more vivid? In this urban fantasy novel, Blue starts out rough and bitter, jaded by the whole world — so for most young people who have grown up during this “Great Recession,” she’s very easy to relate to. But her character is much more complex than that, and when she meets Kasey, not only does she start to open up, time literally stops.

This gradually unfolding story will draw you in and keep the pages turning, the characters are both interesting and charismatic. They will make you feel like they are long lost friends instead of just characters in the story. YA readers will find the underpinning of the story both recognizable as a thread common among the generation today and original enough to stand on its own. Once the last page turns, you’ll be watching the clock for the next book!

I really enjoyed this book. It was really different and anything being different for me is saying alot, since I read so many paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi, and other of the types.

I was on the edge of my seat through it all. I was brought to tears on more than one occasion at something that happened, something I didn't expect.

I found Kasey pretty awesome, except his strange way of talking he has, hard to describe but it got on my nerves a bit, but still loved him and the story overall.

I do not want to spoil anything, so just want to say that this story is different and has plenty of believable paranormal elements in it.

I will say that this book really reminds me of a favorite show on tv last season, called The Tomorrow People (yeah, not a great name, lol) anyway there is alt of similarities but it didn't bother me, as I said, I loved the show too.

I highly recommend this, and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Cover review: I love this cover, and it fits the book well.

I was given a copy of this book for my honest review.

This book was absolutely amazing.

I was first drawn by the intriguing title and cover. As soon as I opened to the first page I was hooked, to the point of emailing the author to gush within the first few chapters. Blue starts out as such an incredible character, with deep seeded flaws and a true emotional depth that is a rarity nowadays. I connected with Blue in every moment throughout the book, in her worst moments and as she evolved into the incredible heroine she became.

Her relationship with Kasey was stunning. He was stunning. The way he treated her and spoke to her was so incredible. He was enlightened, and after dealing with so many male leads who are the exact opposite his point of view and personality were incredibly refreshing and impressive.

The story was excellent, well-written, but it really was the characters and their development and emotional depth that had me blowing through this book in a few hours. These were people, real, genuine, sincere people that I related to in every moment. There is nothing wrong with this book. Excellent story, excellent character development, excellent writing. I don't have anything bad to say.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Blue is coasting through life, without ambition, without a family, having been through a pretty crappy childhood. During early adulthood, she's gone from crappy job to crappy job, getting the jobs based only on her looks. Suddenly she meets Kasey, and just as suddenly, she can stop time, and she is introduced to a band of misfits just like herself who have varied and unique "abilities".
The writing itself is good. In the beginning, I kept swinging from pity for Blue, to annoyance that she would waste her life away, to hope that she could find a place that she would fit in and use her abilities for good. That's all anyone really needs, a way to use their talents for the greater good.
I found the dialogue to be rather choppy and difficult to get into. The characters seemed to be kind of flat for me, a little too two dimensional. I wasn't able to really dig deeply into Blue as I would have liked to. The storyline was a great premise, but it could have been so much better of the characters were more fleshed out.

This is an ok book for the most part. The writing is good but the dialogue lacks a genuine feel. The characters are different from each other but lack fleshing out beyond the surface. The plot is interesting and has a good flow. With more polish on the characters this has the potential for a very good read. I'm keeping this author on the watch-for-future-releases list. I would like to thank the author for allowing me to read her novel and review it for this book tour.

Blue is angry. She is alone and feels utterly disconnected from the rest of the world and everyone in it. She has been on her own since she was 16 but before that her mother was never really a mother. She just ignored Blue for the constant string of men and drinks that flowed by. When the men started to notice Blue more than her, she threw her daughter out. The abuse and abandonment formed a young woman who followed the same path. Angry that the only thing people see is her body, but only able to feel at the moment of climax, Blue walks through life alone. She has one “friend” who is really only another tool. Getting wasted and going to clubs to find a new man to pass the night with is how she copes. She keeps glancing up, looking to see if maybe she will find another paper doll like her.

The night she meets Kasey at the Noc Noc club she is instantly drawn to him. Feelings she has never had before come up until suddenly he is there in front of her. The minute they touch time stops, figuratively and literally. Shared visions flash through their minds; visions of a killer stalking his prey. When they stop touching, time still remains frozen and Kasey tells Blue she is the reason time has stopped and she can undo it. He can help her understand it all. Blue cannot deny the connection and literal spark she feels with him but she doesn’t trust anyone, let alone a stranger who tells her she has special powers. He wants her to meet his friends and tells her that she can change herself and her whole life. Kasey makes Blue feel things she never felt before, almost like coming home. The one thing she has always wanted was to belong and be loved, but can she put her trust in him and his friends? Can she let go of her own anger and pain and let others in?

I really enjoyed this book. It is very well written and evokes a great deal of imagery. All of the characters are real and vibrant. I connected with Blue in many ways. She is a damaged and angry young woman who walks through life with a sarcastic snarl. She cannot keep her snarky mouth shut and it doesn’t make her many friends. She tends to flare up defensively any time she feels insecure or attacked. The reality though, is that she is lonely and afraid to trust and be hurt.

The rest of the characters are wonderful too. Kasey, Blue’s soul mate and the leader of the group of people with nonhuman powers, is wise, calm and caring. He is a telepath and can read anyones mind; he also has visions of the future. Avery is also a telepath and he is Telekinetic. He is seriously attractive and the confusion he brings to Blue and Kasey’s relationship adds some flavor to the story. Esme is a genius with a brain that works better than anyone else on the planet. She is tracking all of their health and DNA and figuring out why they are all different. Her twin sister Val is a lot like Blue. She has attitude for days as well as the ability to electrify you. Her fierceness is tempered only by her calm, hippie boyfriend with the super green thumb, Ash. Ash has the ability to make things grow. Organic materials grow and mend at his will. He can create 10 foot tall plants or heal your wound, saving lives. While this crew was resistant to Blue at first, they quickly become the strong family that Blue has always needed.

I couldn’t stop reading this book. Each page was more interesting than the last. Blue has quite the foul mouth and is fast and witty with her quips. I will admit to a small level of jealousy in her retort skill. I laughed out loud many times and my whole family thinks I am nuts because a story that cracked me up left me ugly-crying like a Kardashian at the end. I really look forward to the next book in the series.

My rating: 5/5 stars.

I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.

Blue was a loner, no friends or family. Every job she had ever had, she got because her employers thought that they could get her into bed. Her life was a mess and falling apart fast. That is, until one night partying at a club she encounters the very handsome and mysterious Kasey, and time stands still...literally. With Kasey's help, she learns that she has the ability to stop time and travel through time and space. Kasey recruits her into his group and into his heart. Each member has a special ability and they begin working together for the greater good. There's Val, she can zap you with harnessed electricity. Her twin Esme, her gift is that she never forgets anything, which in fact turns her into a genius. Then there's Ash, the healer of all things, and finally Avery, another precognitive like Kasey, but he can influence behavior. When Kasey's vision connects them to a dangerous stalker preying on red haired women, Blue's life may very well be in danger. To make things worse, he too has special abilities and knows how to use them.

This was a pretty neat story. When I read the synopsis, I knew I'd love it. It reminded a bit of the Fantastic Four, you know, with each person having a special power. I also like the idea of each of them having a symbiotic partner. That is completely unique to this story. There's enough action to keep you intrigued throughout the novel, and you'll love the uniqueness of each character. This was an awesome read and I can't wait to see what happens next!

The Blue Effect is an adult urban fantasy / science-fiction novel focusing on the story of Blue and Kasey. Blue has had a rough life so far, but behind her bitter exterior, she hides a complex, intriguing personality.

When she meets Kasey, she finds out she can stop time, and Kasey explains to her that not only does she have abilities, but he has gis own gifts as well. And they’re not the only ones. He introduces Kasey to a group of misfits with powerful abilities who struggle to hide their gifts from the rest of society. Think The Tomorrow People. Think X-Men. The plot has been done before, but the personalities of Blue and Kasey add an extra layer to the story, breathing new life into a familiar trope.

While Blue might’ve finally found a place she belongs, she finds out a nameless, faceless sociopath with horrible powers, is coming for her. She must learn to control her powers to save her new family, and her own life.

Blue is intriguing, like I mentioned, but it’s Kasey who stole the show. He was charming in almost every way. Mysterious, dangerous, the perfect hero with some bad-boy qualities. The writing is exquisite, and I felt drawn into the world of this book almost right away.

An entertaining start to a new series.

At first I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I agreed to review this book, but I was so happy that I did because The Blue Effect is absolutely awesome. The character of Blue is definitely someone that takes a little bit to warm up to but that’s only because she had not had the best of a before life. When I got into the story further, I really began to love her and warm up to her. Blue grows as a person throughout the novel, and I loved relishing in the mystery that was also popping up throughout the story. Blue is an outspoken woman, which I absolutely loved. I think I love the use of profanity in books as much as the next person. As Blue grows, she doesn’t lose herself completely. She instead finds out more than she was.

All of the characters meshed well together throughout with their abilities and working together. This meshing allowed for the book to flow smoothly and be a read that I could get into easily. The plot was also just as seamless and I got lost in the emotions of the story as I read. This book actually went by too fast for me. I can not wait for the next one because I was left wanting more. Sometimes that’s a great thing. This time it definitely was!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Blue Brennan has the sexy pin up looks and a foul mouth. Life hasn't been good to her. Most nights you can find Blue trolling the clubs for a distraction for the emptiness she feels. She is jaded and hates everyone. After losing her last job, Blue feels like her life is falling apart. One night while at a club she meets Kasey. Blue finds herself being drawn to him. Time literally stops and Kasey tells her that she is the one that caused it. He tells her that she has a powerful ability and he can help her use it. Blue enters a whole different world where there are others like her and it's almost like real like super heroes. There is a threat against the group and she is the key to defeating it. Can Blue learn to use her powers and save the day or does she walk away?

I have to say I loved Blue's character! She is feisty but at the same time has a vulnerability about her. The story was good and once I got into it I couldn't put it down. This is a super hero story with a modern twist. I highly recommend! I give this 5 stars

The Blue Effect is amazing. I wasn't sure what I thought of Blue at first, but throughout the book I started to really love her. As much as this book is exciting with the characters' abilities and the constant mystery, I also thought that it was about Blue's growth. While she never loses that sassy mouth, and believe me you should be ready for a lot of cussing, she does start to look at her life and the world in a whole new way. I think that part is perfect.

I loved the whole ability aspect of this book. The way the characters worked together, and learned how to grow their abilities into more made the book move along and kept everything interesting. The plot is intense and I was holding my breath at times as things unfolded. I was around eight pages from the end when I realized that the book was ending and I wasn't ready for it to. I cannot wait for the next book. There is so much that I want to find out.

I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

Blue didn't need or want anyone in her life. She was fine just making her way and not feeling anything for anyone and therefore not risking being hurt by anyone.

Then she meets Kasey. He took everything in her life and turned it upside down. She found the love of a family from the group. After her rocky start with a couple of them it all worked out to where they would do anything for each other.

Now add in the unique abilities of each member and a threat to them that they don't have any idea how to overcome and you have the making for a very interesting story.

I loved this book. It was real in a way that many are not. It showed real emotion in the characters and a depth that is often times missing. It grabbed my attention and held it until the very end. I was left wanting to start the next book in the series immediately.

A definite must read!

I WAS SO EXCITED TO HAVE THE CHANCE TO REVIEW THIS BOOK. I LOVE BOOKS THAT HAVE CHARACTERS WITH POWERS! I DID HAVE A ROUGH TIME GETTING INTO THIS BOOK FOR THE FIRST 10 PAGES OR SO. IT SEEMED TO BE A BIT SCATTERED IN MY OPINION. AROUND THE PAGE 10 MARK, IT WAS ALMOST LIKE THE AUTHOR HAD TAKEN A BREAK AND THEN CAME BACK WITH GUSTO, BECAUSE EVERYTHING CLICKED AND STARTING WORKING TOGETHER BEAUTIFULLY. THERE WAS SOME AWESOME POWERS MIXED IN WITH UNRESOLVED ISSUES, AS WELL AS AN OUTSIDER IN A GROUP OF A RAGTAG "FAMILY". OF COURSE, THERE IS ALSO A BIG BADDIE TO BEAT. THE DRAMA, THE FAST-PACE, BADASSNESS, AND A BIT OF ROMANCE TIED IT ALL UP WITH A POWER-FILLED-BOW! I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK AND CANNOT WAIT UNTIL I CAN GET MY HANDS ON BOOK 2!!!
I GIVE THIS BOOK 4.5 STARS!

I had the pleasure of having an early read of this book. Loved it....

Blue is this young woman who has lived a very rough life. At a young age began to use her red hair and beauty to meet me. To get jobs. To just survive in her life. One night in a club she meets a guy who is not her typical type but she is very drawn to. Then the story explodes from there because when their hands meet, all time stops for everyone but them. Yeah.. Freaky. Kasey introduces her to a world she didn't know existed. With powers she had no idea were out there. She finds true love and a family not of blood.... I really loved this story. I'm looking forward to the next book.

Blue isn't happy with her life, she goes to clubs in the hope to find someone and something to fill her life, then one night she meets mysterious Kasey, he claims she has a gift and brings her into a group that use their abilities to the greater good. she finally starts to feel she belongs somewhere.

Till.... a sociopath is after them and ants to use Blue, she has to find out how to use her abilities to beat the person that is after her and her new friends. Will she be able too??? can she???

Great book,.... mysterious, strong characters, nice twists and plots, highly recommended, can't wait to read more from this author.

An intriguing story, with the next sub species of humans having evolved, with individual powers that allow them to eavesdrop on other's thoughts, move objects by telekinesis, shot electrical power from their fingers or even stop time.
Due to Kasey's endeavors a group of these "gifted" individuals are brought together, and they are trying to use their power for good.
Unfortunately, they come up against an individual who is also "gifted" , who is intent on his own immortality.
You will need to read the book, to find the true story and how it ends.

This has a very interesting concept with some fun characters. So what if you found out you had some powers you never knew about, and there are a few people like you who have other powers and they use those powers to save and help people. Yep like Batman, except no one knows they exist. LOL

So, Blue is a looser, and seriously, I thought I would hate her. She started out a wasted space, lost girl, and when she finally got her ass in gear, she turned into a much better person and a likable character. She’s somewhat of a mess, and she has one of the most powerful gifts out of everyone. She of course goes out drinking to pretend her life doesn’t suck one night, and meets Kasey, who touches her and they stop time. It was quite an experience. And that’s how she meets Kasey and his crew of Renegade heroes. She needed a lot of pushing, and an attitude adjustment, and at the end I cried for her, but she turned around enough that I say good character growth.

Kasey and his group are all a bunch of people who found each other because of their powers. I liked some of them, I didn’t like some of them, and yet, they have some fascinating powers that do amazing things. It’s such a way of living that’s gritty. Kasey was a nice guy, but I sometimes wanted him to maybe scream or throw a fit, something, LOL though I did stay team Kasey all the way :)

I liked the plot line and the twists at the end, especially revolving around Blue’s mom. Yep, I can’t say I cried about that though. I liked it and I look forward to the next book. 4 PAWS!

I struggled a great deal with this book and almost didn't finish it. The concept was hugely appealing, what's not to like about a group of renegade heroes doing good from the shadows - with super powers! Unfortunately I struggled to like Blue, and her relationships with the others felt forced. I found the world to be one dimensional and lacking in background. I also felt like we felt we got to know the villain more than any other character.

Obviously this book clicked with plenty of people, which is great, but it just isn't for me.
