I’ve always been the reliable twin—the grounded one who stayed behind while my sister chased dreams. Until I kiss a masked musician whose touch sets my world on fire.

There's something hauntingly familiar about him - until I discover he’s Jesse O’Donnell, my childhood friend who I’ve secretly loved forever. The boy who grew into a gorgeous, tortured musician with secrets in his eyes and demons I don't understand.
I’m tangled in a relationship that’s equal parts thrilling and reckless. With Jesse, I finally feel alive—taking risks, breaking rules, discovering parts of myself I never knew existed.

When I tell him I’m pregnant, I brace for everything... except when he tells me to get rid of it.

Now I’m on one side of the door. He’s on the other, begging for a second chance.

But I have to ask myself: did Jesse ever take the mask off... or did I just fall for the illusion?

A soulful, slow-burn rockstar romance where childhood friends become lovers, a masked musician hides behind his lyrics, and love becomes the melody that heals them both.

The Hard Line is the third book in the Blood & Bone legacy series, a second gen novel featuring the children from Paula Dombrowiak's Blood & Bone series.

*An interconnected standalone series. You DO NOT have to read the Blood & Bone series first.

This is the third book in this second-generation story, and this is Jesse and Joey’s story.
Jesse and Joey grew up together, as their fathers are best friends. Jesse battles with his self-worth and wants to prove himself away from his dad’s shadow, while Joey always meets others’ expectations, and she loves her work on the family ranch. Joey has always loved Jesse, unknown to him, and when she kisses a masked stranger, he sets her world on fire.
This is a well written slow burn, emotional roller coaster, with family, friendships, angst, tension, hidden identity, childhood friends / lovers, communication, secrets, challenges, healing, second chances, humour, witty banter, revelations, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, haunting, and unpredictable, rockstar romance.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Paula Dombrowiak exceeded my expectations with this book! Jesse & Joey were so much more than I expected from Jack & Cash's kids, and I loved that: I LOVED the amount of drama the author gave me in this book, the story of friendship and love between these characters, and even the obstacles they have to overcome, the secondary characters, and the way Paula showed me the characters I already love in their lives as functional and happy adults.

Joey is the typical good girl who always does what's expected of her, she loves the work she does on the family ranch with the horses and has big dreams for it, so it broke my heart to read her feeling stuck in her own life, comparing her dreams to those of the other, especially Maggie's, her twin sister, whom I have to say I kind of hated in this book (but I'm dying to read her), that's why I loved THAT important conversation the sisters have towards the end, the way Joey finally says what she feels and thinks. I also loved that Paula gave me little glimpses into Joey's relationship with Cash: knowing that she's the most like his dad made me love her even more, and reading about how she helped out at the store and how they share the love for music melted my heart, plus, I loved how Joey dealt with him when things got tough—definitely a side of this character I didn't expect, but one I ended up loving completely.

At first, I thought Jesse would be as frustrating as Jack, and I was prepared to hate him a little, BUT I was wrong because Jesse is one of the most amazing characters this author has ever written. I loved reading about him head over heels in love with Joey, finding his way to make music, and having that special relationship with Dylan and Hayley. I also liked that the complexity of his story and the secrets he keeps had nothing to do with Jack's conflicts, it broke my heart to read him so worried and scared that the world would discover his true identity, and although I was very angry when he hurt Joey, I completely understood his reasons for acting that way, and that's why I loved reading about him fighting to regain Joey's trust.

I really enjoyed reading Joey & Jesse's story, from the friendship that has always bound them together, to the moment everything changed and Jesse decided to walk away, and particularly the way Paula chose to bring them back together: I really liked that for Jesse it was impossible to walk away from Joey after that kiss. I LOVED that they both had feelings for each other, that they had obstacles to overcome, and that despite everything, they were always there to support each other.

I also have to say that I loved the role the author gave to Jack & Cash in this book, I enjoyed seeing them as loving, responsible dads who are willing to do anything to protect their children. I particularly enjoyed Jack because he's a character I've always had a love-hate relationship with, and I didn't expect to see him so vulnerable with Jesse, making mistakes again, but this time knowing how to always be there for him. I also loved the confrontation between the dads, the way Jesse and Joey stood up to them, and even though Cash is my favorite of the first generation, I loved reading about his daughter setting boundaries to defend Jesse.

This is the story of lifelong best friends, Joey Morgan-horse whisperer, and musician Jesse O'Donnell and the love burning slowly and silently between them for years. Their dads are old friends with a long, complicated history, so what could be better than their kids falling in love? Not a thing! Paula Dombroiak has a talent for writing amazing, unforgettable romances that build up the angsty intensity as the chapters go by. The Hard Line completes her Blood and Bone Legacy series and besides being my most anticipated, it quickly became my favorite of this series as well.

The friendship, the longing and always their love of music, such a big part of both of their lives with famous dads such as theirs (Jack & Cash- I see you! Xoxo). I breathed in every single emotion that flowed between Jesse and Joey, but these are only some of the many reasons I could not put this book down.

Joey's life predictably revolves around the ranch, dedicated to her family's mission of rescuing and rehabilitating the broken horses no one else wants, while coaxing them to trust again with such empathy and care. Joey's the strong one everyone counts on, meanwhile her twin is usually on the move. But sometimes it feels this is all she has.... ever since her best friend became a stranger, and she doesn't know why.

Joey vows to get out of her comfort zone and live for herself a little. Being out with old friends, anticipating the thrill of a viral new band playing in a secret venue- it's exactly what she needs. Mind blown, Joey gets lost in this edgy music sung by an intensely mysterious masked rock star she can't stop obsessing over after a backstage encounter leaves her wanting much more.

Raw and untamed, Jesse O'Donnell is the kind of leading man I love to love. Gifted with all the talent of his famous father, but needing to earn it his own way. Music is in his blood, but putting himself in the spotlight for all to see and judge? That's a hard no. So he comes up with an avant-garde concept to hide behind, but trying to outrun his secrets isn't so easy. My heart broke for Jesse at times. Was he a tortured soul with music and a few demons pouring out of him? OMG, his lyrics are so personal, they felt like peeks inside his head revealed in song. If only I could've heard Jesse sing them. Swoonworthy or tear inducing, I loved this creative way of showing the reader what Jesse was feeling deep in his heart. Well done, Paula Dombroiak.

"Some songs aren’t ready to exist outside of my head, and this one belongs to someone who doesn’t know I’m writing it for her."

Jesse and Joey melt into each other with the kind of love and chemistry that leaves no doubt in anyone's mind where it's heading. They soared with the joy of finally being together, then long buried secrets emerge. They were challenged, tested and torn and didn't always handle their emotions well when life takes a downhill turn. Even so, I could have read another entire book about them and still would have found more to love about them, angst, unexpected twists and all.

“This isn’t going to be easy,”

“I’d rather do hard with you. than easy without you.”

Joey and Jesse earned the happy ending they deserved the hard way. I loved the addition of that big, extended bonus epilogue- so beautiful, heartwarming and very much the perfect way to wrap up The Hard Line, this next generation's series, and beyond in a tight, all-inclusive hug.

Other parts that made my inner rock star romance lover swoon were those juicy Jack moments- even though he's been an ornery devil in the past, I still  love this guy and want any and all Jack sighting I can get. He somehow evolved into a witty, but wise shaman, all tender and selfless, especially with his son when Jesse needed him most. My heart beat a little faster knowing these memorable Blood and Bone characters continue to have peace, that forever kind of love with families of their own, found and otherwise, in their lives.

I often say this at the end of a wonderful series (or two)- I'm going to have a hard time saying goodbye to these unique, beloved characters I still think about, even years later. So, seriously, can we please see more of them all again sometime, tucked in here and there, just for fun???  Future bonus stories are always welcome too!

* I was given an early copy of this book to read and review. These are my honest and freely given thoughts after finishing The Hard Line.

♡  For readers new to this author who love this book after reaching 'the end', there is a whole world connected to this standalone to explore. Don't miss out! You might be wondering- who are Jack and Cash? Besides being the cool dads of these 20-somethings they are now, they once were the hot, also cool and very complex main characters with their own stories. ♡

As the next generation of the Blood and Bone universe make their marks in the world Paula Dombrowiak shares the joy and burden of the history they carry forward with all the emotions that come with it in The Hard Line.

Sensitive with a rare talent uniquely his own Jesse O'Donnell struggled with being overshadowed by his famous father's legacy. This character was incredibly aware of who he was to the detriment of what he wanted in life. Jesse was intense as he lived and breathed his music but it was how he loved that totally consumed him and shaped who he was as a man.

Joey was happy being out of the spotlight and doing what she loved, quietly rehabilitating abused horses, even as she yearned for the love of the one man who kept his distance from her. Joey showed a strength that proved to be both grounding and formidable. This woman even when she stepped out from behind the walls she erected showed a determination that was admirable and a love that was true.

Jesse and Joey had the star-crossed lovers vibe going for them as they were pitted against their family's hurdles and their self-imposed hurdles. The depth of their love overrode their intense physical attraction and was what allowed this couple to survive some hard revelations and situations that for many there would be no coming back from. Jesse and Joey's hiding behind walls, hiding behind masks, all to avoid difficult truths, only to find that in the end they were exposed anyway kept their relationship on the razor's edge. This work was about showing people's true selves and disclosing who was genuine and who had the grit and love to take on the implications of the truth.

You can't talk about this couple without acknowledging the history of their father's. Both of their fathers have played an integral role in how their relationship developed and how it was supported. The real eye opener was what an amazing parent Jack O'Donnell was to his son in his time of need and his kindness to Joey. There were no sides, just compassion from Jack. Cash was at times a bit judgmental and harsh in his approach to Jesse contributing to the drama rather than deescalating. As the past confronted the present Jack and Cash continued to be wildcards in these connected series.

Paula Dombrowiak did a tremendous job of bringing mental health issues to the forefront in this story. Her compassion and insight showed her characters to not be broken but complex and human in their reactions. While often difficult to deal with, the problems associated with mental illness were boldly addressed and recognized by this author. It is a testament to her writing skills that Ms. Dombrowiak was able to move past her portrayals specific issues and focus on the whole person they presented and what they offered.

Paula Dombrowiak's raw and powerful storys continue to resonate long after the last page is read in her works. Memorable characters fill her books with their fallibility, pain and joy. It is obvious to any one who reads this author's works how invested she is in her portrayals. Paula Dombrowiak’s The Hard Line was a story where love conquered legacy and overcame personal challenges for a well deserved happily ever after.

*I was given an advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own. *

*While this book can be read as a stand alone reading the previous book in this series and the Blood and Bones series would enhance readers overall reading experience.*

THE HARD LINE is the third and final instalment in Paula Dombrowiak’s contemporary, new adult BLOOD AND BONE LEGACY rock romance series, a spin off set in the author’s BLOOD AND BONE world. This is twenty year olds, singer /song writer Jesse O’Donnell, son of Jack and Erin O’Donnell (Blood and Bone #1 & #2), and Joey Morgan, sister of Maggie Morgan (Walk the Line / Blood and Bone Legacy 1). THE HARD LINE can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion. The events of THE HARD LINE cross over with, and run parallel to the events of book one WALK THE LINE.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Jesse and Joey) THE HARD LINE focuses on the rekindling friendship and growing relationship between twenty year olds Jesse O’Donnell, and Joey Morgan.Joey and Jesse have been friends all of their lives. In the wake of their fathers’ (Jack and Cash) fallout and broken friendships (Blood and Bone), Joey and Jesse struggled but five years earlier Jesse pushed Joey out of his life, hiding a dark secret he wanted no one to know. Fast forward to present day, a new singing star is on the horizon, a man who keeps his identity hidden behind a mask but a man whose voice is both familiar and haunting for our story line heroine. Rekindling their friendship quickly turns into something more but when Jesse begins to spiral, and an unplanned pregnancy is announced, our heroine finds herself alone, struggling to understand where everything went wrong.

The world building follows the dynamics of the band Silent Revenant,as the individual egos fight for control. Jesse struggles with the anxiety of nepotism and the crowds that could make or break a career, while Joey begins to wonder if the man whom she loves it the same boy from years before.

The relationship between Joey and Jesse is a friends to lovers romance but a romance kept secret from family and friends. The fall-out of the O’Donnell and Morgan partnership years earlier, continues to affect the next generation. Refusing to ride on his father’s proverbial coat tails, Jesse is determined to make it on his own but a perceived betrayal sends Jesse into a spiral, and words said in anger push Joey out of his life. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and familiar secondary and supporting characters including the return of Joey’s sister Maggie, their father Cash: Jesse’s sister Hayley, and their parents Jack and Erin; band members Luke,Stella, Rachel, Dylan, and Tommy

THE HARD LINE is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and heart break, family and friendships, forgiveness and love. The character driven premise is emotional, dramatic and edgy; the romance is seductive ; the characters are charismatic and dynamic.

The Hard Line is the 3rd book in the Blood & Bone Legacy Series by Paula Dombrowiak. The Blood & Bone legacy series is a second gen novel featuring the children from Paula Dombrowiak's Blood & Bone series. The Blood & Bone Series is an interconnected standalone series. You DO NOT have to read the Blood & Bone series first.

Jesse & Joey exceeded all my expectations, and they were so much more than I could ever have expected from Jack & Cash’s kids, and I honestly just loved that. Paula gave us so much drama in this book. But, more than just the drama, we get the story of friendship and love between Jesse & Joey, and all the obstacles that they have to overcome. And we get secondary characters who are just stunning and help keep the story moving forward, and we get to see characters that we have already fallen in love with, and we get to see them as fully functional adults who are happy and content.

Joey is our typical good girl, the kind of girl who does what’s expected of her. She enjoys the work she does on her family ranch with the horses, and I loved the dreams she had for him. My heart broke for her when I read that she felt stuck in her own life after comparing her dreams to those of the other boys, especially her twin sister Maggie. And I have to be honest, I kind of hated Maggie in this book. But I started to warm to her after Maggie and Joey’s conversation closer to the end of the book. That’s when Joey finally admits to how she’s been feeling and how she’s been thinking. And we get a small glimpse into Joey’s relationship with Cash.

It was interesting to learn that Joey was more like her, and I enjoyed reading about how she helped out at the store and how they shared a deep love of music (I love music myself). I also loved the way Joey handled things when things got really tough.

Jesse: I thought Jesse was going to be as frustrating as Jack, and I was so ready to really hate him a little like his dad, but man oh man was I ever wrong. I found Jesse to be a charming character, and I adored the way he fell madly in love with Joey, and how he was able to make music with a special relationship with Dylan & Hayley.

More than anything, though, I loved the complexity of Joey’s story, the secrets he was keeping, and that he absolutely had nothing to do with any of Jack’s conflicts, and my heart shattered when I read how worried Joey was that the world was going to learn his true identity. And while I got so mad at that moment, he did hurt Joey, I did actually understand his underlying motivations for acting the way he did, and honestly, that’s why I enjoyed reading about him fighting to regain Joey’s trust.

Joey and Jesse were childhood friends, and Jesse has always had deep feelings for Joey. Yet everything changed when Jesse decided to move away, but they were slowly brought back together, and I loved the way it happened and the way Jesse learned that Joey had feelings for her as well. Like any relationship, theirs had its obstacles to overcome, but despite everything, they always had each other's backs.

I absolutely adore Paula Dombrowiak and her writing, and if you are the kind of reader who loves a good rockstar romance, a slow-burn, friends-to-lovers, and a story where love becomes the melody that heals them both, then this is the book that you’ll want to read right now.

Jessie has a famous rockstar father, so when he’s finally convinced to take his own music to the stage, he and his band create elaborate disguises. He claims it’s because he doesn’t want to ride on his father’s coattails, but the truth is much deeper than that.
Joey has dedicated her life to rehabilitating abused horses. These animals are her passion, her purpose, and her safe place. While her twin sister is tough, outspoken, and currently filming a band on tour, Joey is still trying to figure out exactly what she wants from life.
When her friends drag her to a concert featuring a mysterious group of masked musicians, she isn’t expecting to be completely captivated. But the moment Silent Revenant takes the stage, she can’t look away. Mesmerized by his voice and drawn to the mystery behind the mask, Joey finds herself completely overwhelmed. Needing air, she escapes the crowd and ends up right in front of the man she can’t stop thinking about.
Jessie and Joey are absolutely adorable together. Their chemistry is undeniable, and I loved watching their relationship develop. What makes it even better is that they’re much closer than either of them realizes. Unfortunately, Jessie is hiding a secret from Joey, and with every passing day, the pressure builds for him to finally tell her the truth.
I devoured this book. I couldn’t put it down, and when I did, I found myself thinking about it until I could pick it back up again. The story grabbed me from the first chapter and never let go.
This is a sweet, emotional, and thoroughly entertaining love story with a five-star ending that left me completely satisfied. I can’t wait to read a book about Tommy and Sugar T***’s story next?⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Joey and Jesse’s story had me reeling, crying and sighing. Theirs is a very emotional journey from friends to lovers, with lots of soul-searching, wrangling with fears and doubts, and secrets that threaten to blow everything apart. Some would say they are too young for a love so deep and, at times, tortured, but these two eventually make you believe that they can survive anything as long as they are together.

Jesse’s struggles with his self-worth break my heart. His talent rivals his father’s, but his father casts a long shadow. He wants to earn his own place in the limelight, not let his father’s name speak too loudly for him. Joey supports his music, his ambition and his need to find his own way. She too knows what it is like to be in someone’s shadow, to have someone who grabs all the attention, (in this case m her vivacious twin). Joey has her own dreams for her future, dreams that don’t include the limelight Jesse wants. Their fathers are friends, but neither want their kids to be anything more than friends. They share secrets that weigh heavily on them both and color that decision.

But the heart wants what the heart wants, and Jesse’s heart wants Joey and vice versa. Unfortunately, these two have to weather a very bumpy road before they find their way toward a happily ever after. Jesse is keeping a very big secret from Joey, one that changes the dynamics of their relationship. Joey’s own secret is one she is sure Jesse is not ready to hear, and when this proves to be right, a future together seems impossible. But all is not lost.

This emotional and very compelling book has my wholehearted recommendation.

I may have said this before but I am still excited that Ms. Dombrowiak decided to do a next-generation series based on her Blood & Bone series. Each one of these books brings back so many memories of Jack, Cash and the rest of the group. Each book in this series holds a place in my heart and on my bookshelf. Ms. Dombrowiak delivers an emotionally charged love story filled with friendships, mysteries, secrets, angst, chemistry, family and love that had been simmering under the surface for years.
Now we finally get Joey Morgan and Jess O'Donnell's story. He's the boy, now a man, she's loved since she was a young girl. Joey loves working on her family's horse farm but now that her twin is out in the real world, she is thinking of taking chances. Once chance leads her to kiss a masked singer, but the only thing is that she feels there is something familiar about him. Jess is trying to be a musician but does not want to be in the limelight of his father, Jack O'Donnell. Chances have them meeting in a dark hallway.
I loved the slow burn of their story. What moved my heart the most was finding out about Jess and the suffering he was enduring. I wanted to hold him and tell him everything was going to be alright, yet at the same time give him a shake and tell him to open up to the woman he has loved forever.
A well-written, captivating and one book you do not want to miss.

The Hard Line: A passionate rockstar romance featuring secret identities and a surprise pregnancy (Blood & Bone Legacy Book 3) by Paula Dombrowiak tells a heartbreaking love story between childhood friends Jessie O’Donnell and Joey Morgan. Jessie, the son of Jack O’Donnell, lead singer of Mogo, and Joey, the daughter of Cash Morgan—Jack’s bandmate whose marriage ended due to his wife Mia’s affair—are at the story's core. Jessie fronts Silent Revenant, a band where members wear half-face masks to maintain Jessie’s anonymity, letting their music speak for itself, free from the shadows of Jack’s fame. After a concert, Joey Morgan attends and is kissed by the band’s frontman, who she soon realizes is her childhood crush, Jessie. Their passionate love affair ignites, but it’s fraught with risk. Jessie hides more than his masked identity, haunted by his secrets. Joey learns she is pregnant from one careless moment of passion, raising fears that her pregnancy might destroy their relationship. Jessie struggles to maintain his masked persona on stage to protect his identity, while their relationship faces threats from lies and secrets that have yet to surface, risking everything. Paula Dombrowiak continues to excel at crafting rockstar romances that thrill her readers with each book

The Hard Line : Blood & Bone Legacy Book 3
I Secret Relationship « Surprise Pregnancy
•Rockstar Romance & all the feels.
Fun , steamy, beautiful, emotionally charged, heartfelt, heartbreaking, messy, real and just utterly addictive.
Paula has done it again !! What you ask? Well that's simple!! Wrecked me, just completely and utterly wrecked me in all the best ways.
Heart shattered and then somehow put right back together again . Guys I really am equally obsessed and in love with this absolutely amazing series / world that Paula has so brilliantly created. And yes each couple does own a piece of my heart. That being said, something about Jesse and Joey was just so special. Words cannot describe how much I adored their story. The progression of their relationship, the connection between them , the way they were not perfect and their relationship was not easy, it was just so beautiful and made me smile, laugh, cry and cheer so freaking hard for their happy ending.
This is the type of love story that will own your heart, that shows you how even with obstacles, emotional struggles and challenges, love really can overcome all the odds.

Paula, Paula, Paula... queen... this is now my number 1 read of 2026, I freaking loved this so much and I feel so honored to have gotten the chance to read this before it's big debut. The amount of references to Sleep Token was just amazing, Vessel would be proud and maybe blushing haha. I love how we got a full circle moment with book 1 being Maggie's story and then this being her twin sister Joey's story, it was so nice to get to know the "Sane Twin". I also feel like there might have been some Heartland references in this as well if anyone has ever seen the show because Joey reminded me so much of Amy from Heartland with the horses and falling in love with someone who is "broken". Jesse... oh sweet misunderstood Jesse, I absolutely loved him and my heart broke for him in the later chapters but I was also upset with him for not trusting Joey with the knowledge of his BPD diagnosis even though I know why he did it. Thank you Paula for this amazing story and couple, The Hard Line is absolutely my favorite in the Trilogy and I cannot wait for everyone else to read it.

The Hard Line delivers exactly what fans of contemporary romance expect from Paula Dombrowiak: emotional drama, flawed characters, strong chemistry, and a music-centered backdrop.

The story follows a woman who reconnects with her childhood crush, now a troubled musician hiding behind a public persona. The romance is layered with secrets, a surprise pregnancy, and questions about trust and forgiveness.

What works well is the emotional tension. Jesse isn't presented as a perfect hero, and the conflict between the couple feels substantial rather than manufactured. The childhood-friends-to-lovers angle adds depth because there's already history between the characters before the romance begins.

The rock-star setting also gives the story a slightly dramatic, larger-than-life feel without completely overshadowing the relationship.

Paula Dombrowiak's writing generally appeals to readers who enjoy intense emotions, redemption arcs, and imperfect characters trying to earn a second chance.

Ooof, My Heart Hurts in all the best Ways!

There is no doubt that Jesse is Jack’s son. The broodiness, the energy, the deep, passionate way he feels and to a lesser degree, the struggles.
Joey and Jesse had me laughing, had me crying, and I don’t think I’ve met another character since Jack O’Donnell that I’ve wanted more to reach out and hug. Just hug him and tell him that it’s gonna be okay. Their chemistry was undeniable, the love for one another unmistakable, but the hurt Jesse caused unintentionally almost unforgivable.

Paula Dombrowiak has a way to bring characters alive that very few authors have. I truly feel part of their world when I read one of her books and this book, well, it was even more so. Each story is an experience. Each book is a standalone which, I have no doubt, would be amazing on it’s own but I promise if you read one, you will read them all.

I am heartbroken that the legacies and their stories are over for now. I just hope that Paula works her magic and has them make appearances in her books she has planned for the future.

This book is part of a series but can be read stand alone.
I loved Jesse and Joey they were so different in their life choices of music and horses but come together in young adulthood. They started the journey to know from childhood friendship.
Each character and their pain and triumphs felt real and you worked with them to see a light at the end of their tunnel.
Their parents own legend status in the world both pulling and pushing them to excel and for Jesse that meant hiding and plain site and building a career of his own.
Dialogue flowed and the settings were so real and full. Side characters and the two main characters own parents played a big part in filling the story with laughs, love and pain.

Not my first Paula Dombrowiak book and certainly not my last!

Gosh this story was so good! Every time I read a book by this author, I am surprised by how well the storyline is developed and the realness of the people. I fell in love with Joey and her twin Maggie from the very beginning. I loved their relationship and how close they were. All of the characters have a depth that captures your attention and feels honest and organic. The rock and roll scenes are inspiring as well as exciting - i love the details in each scene that really bring it all to life. I really can't say enough good things about this love story between Joey and Jesse. They had a lot of complex issues to conquer and you really felt all of the turmoil and pain. I loved it. I was sent a copy and these are my thoughts on this book.

WOW! The Hard Line is a fantastic book.

First the storyline is outstanding. It grabs you and holds on until the last words. The characters are real and their emotions run high throughout this engaging story.

Jesse the musician and Joey the horse whisperer, have known each other since childhood. They both have a rough time finding themselves. Years later, one fateful night they reconnect and begin their relationship journey.

I loved this book, last in the series 😥. The crossovers of their family's and the handling of sensitive challenges is wonderful. Paula your books are fabulous. Thank you for sharing your gift in your books.

I received this advanced copy and am leaving an honest review.

This was a 5 🌟 read for me with an nice 3-4 🌶.
This story was such a beautiful journey! From childhood love, through such huge ups and downs and then to our HEA. I was here for every heartbreaking/heartwarming word. It was the 3rd book in the Blood & Bone Legacy. Interconnected standalones.

Joey and Jesse were destined for each other, there was no other outcome. A masked musician who secretly wrote every song for her and a girl who has been wondering what she did wrong for him to be so distant for 5 years.

I just adore the way @pauladombrowiak writes. She words everthing so beautifully and makes me see and feel every thought the character's have!! This is the second series I've read and I will continue to read everything she writes!! Thank you so much!

[ ARC REVIEW ] The Hard Line by Paula Dombrowiak

🗓️ Release Date: 06.09.2026

First of all, I LOVED getting more Maggie and Felix. Walk the Line is my absolute favorite rockstar romance of all time…so getting to see more of them? ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.

Jesse absolutely shattered me at the end, but as someone who also struggles with bipolar, it was so comforting to see an accurate representation in the book. I’ve actually never seen bipolar rep in any book; the way he struggled was SO similar to my own experience.

I loved seeing their journey unfold so beautifully. I truly fell in love with the way they loved each other.

Also, I think Sugar Tits and Tommy may have stolen my heart.

Tropes:
🎭 Rockstar romance
🐴 Masked singer
🎭 Secret Identity
🐴 Childhood friends
🎭 Surprise pregnancy
🐴 Hurt/Comfort
🎭 Friends to lovers

The Hard Line was my first reading experience with Paula Dombrowiak, and I was not disappointed. Jesse and Joey were so well written that the emotional attachment was almost immediate. Their interactions, back stories and emotional responses were so authentic that it brought the characters to life. The plot made all the connections ensuring that by the end of the book there was not any loose ends left. Paula touched on some harder to deal with subjects in a graceful and relatable manner enabling the reader to understand the turmoil whether they have had hands on experience in those areas or not. Beautifully done.

Thank you Paula for providing me this copy and this is my honest opinions.

🌶️🌶️🌶️

Oh man this was a delight. We finally got to dive into the epilogue we learned in book one. I’ve been holding my breath for this one and it did not disappoint.

Friends to lovers. Or really secret lovers to lovers. Mental health rep. Accidental pregnancy. Sowing your wild oats. Like what more could you want?

We also got to see all our almost all our friends from the previous books. I can’t wait to read what happens next.

Joey is strong and capable and filled with all kinds of love. Jesse is a quiet guy who holds his cards close to his chest. He hides secrets, not by desire but by fear. They’re a perfect match and I love them so much. Not to mention Jesse and I share a name so I’m fairly partial. 🤣

This story was beautifully written and kept me entranced from page 1 till the final page.

Who doesn’t love a beautifully broken hero. Jesse was so swoon worthy and I can see why Joey had fallen for him so hard. I loved how in this book both Jack and Cash paid pivotal roles in the book. Jack will always be one of my favourite rock stars!

This was a beautiful story and I felt that the mental health issues were dealt with both sensitively and beautifully. I’m sad to see the end of this series although of course excited to read the next one! A beautiful, emotional and sensitive book with the perfect amount of angst.

Oh, this book. I have been waiting for this book for a while and I am soooo happy that I finally got to read this story.

I have wanted to see where Jesse’s life took him, from that masked backstage kiss that was at the end of the previous book. And it did not disappoint. This story was so amazing. I love Joey so much! She is such an intricate soul, and I want to be her friend. The caring and devotion she has to Jesse melted my heart.

This story reminds you that secrets will always come to light.

Such a great story, and some spice in there too 🌶️🌶️

The Hard Line is book three of the Blood & Bone Legacy Series.

I loved seeing Joey take a bit of a chance and act on her instincts instead of overthinking too much. Jesse and Joey were perfection together. They had that instant chemistry and such a great friendship already. Seeing them come together and make something great was expected and beautiful to read. However, Jesse is keeping a big secret about himself and when the going gets tough he sacrifices his heart because he feels Joey deserves better. Seeing him fight through his pain and struggle with everything really made the story more impactful.

Hard Line is a tender, slow‑burn rockstar romance about two people whose connection runs deeper than either of them expected. When a quiet, steady heroine crosses paths with a masked musician whose presence feels both electric and strangely familiar, she’s pulled into a world of music, mystery, and long‑buried feelings.

Jesse O’Donnell is the kind of hero who keeps his heart guarded, but their chemistry is undeniable—soft, nostalgic, and threaded with the ache of things left unsaid. As their lives intertwine again, the story leans into themes of vulnerability, rediscovery, and the courage it takes to open your heart to someone who has always mattered.

This book is heartfelt, emotional and a wonderful but heartbreaking journey of two people that have loved each other since they were kids.
Joey has always been her sister's quiet shadow, the reliable and boring one, the one that's not good enough, until she allows herself to have something for herself; Jesse, the boy she grew up loving.
Jesse has talent but doesn't want to make is based off his name alone. He has secrets that he is determined to hide even from the only girl he has ever wanted or loved.
It had me feeling ALL the feelings reading how these two navigate a sercret relationship, a surprise pregnancy and the traumas they didnt want to let anyone else see.

Highly recommend this book, it is my favorite by far of the series.
You do not need to have read the other books in the Blood & Bone legacy series to read this.

Wow this book surprised me in all the best ways. I did not expect Joey and Jesse's story to hit me so hard but it hit me right in the feels. Jesse's secret was heartbreaking and relatable. It isn't a topic discussed often in books but I believe it should be and felt it was handled well. Joey's support and dedication was written perfectly and had my heart aching. They are definitely my favorite couple.

This was a great rockstar romance. This started off sweet and steamy. Joey finding herself falling for Jessie, the boy she grew up with. But he a masked rockstar, getting lost in his music. I was blown away when he told her to get rid of the baby. The was a real eye opener for her. But I loved the way these two worked through things. There were some deep topics. But this was such a great story and I’m really glad I had the opportunity to read it.
