When the Titans clash, the blood flows and the entire world trembles…
Reeling from her last knock-down, drag-out with Japan’s mighty combined fleet – the Kido Butai – USS Enterprise limps back to Pearl Harbor for repairs and refitting. And like the battle-hardened warriors who live and work inside her, this gallant lady will return to the fight even stronger… but it can’t happen too soon.
The Japanese are planning a massive offensive on Guadalcanal and Admiral Yamamoto is assembling a huge task force to hammer the spike of the Imperial Army home. Most critical – he’s placed nearly 40 warships, including 4 aircraft carriers, directly in the American Navy’s path… to once and for all crush United States carrier power in the Pacific.
Saratoga is in drydock… Wasp is sunk by Japanese torpedoes… all that stands between the Marines at Henderson Field and the massive Japanese force are the Pacific’s mighty twin sisters…
Can Enterprise and Hornet overcome 2 to 1 odds? Can the fighting men and pilots of America’s only operational carrier task forces hold back the onslaught… or will Yamamoto and Nagumo rain death down upon them from the sky?

Once again Scott Cook writes a novel about the brave men who allow us the freedoms we enjoy. These men,as all our military, live through chaos death and sorrow while also making life long friends. Great characters and wonderful patriotic story. I will never agree or understand why the Enterprise was scrapped and not made a museum for all to honor..
I love that you described the battle in a true, accurate way it occurred. This was done for both sides and sharing the lives lost and the injuries received. You had some officers talked to the dying sailors in their last few minutes of their life with compassion for the dying. Great job. I can't wait for the next book.
Scott Cook writes a good war tale, and this book 5 is no exception. The damage done to the Enterprise this time is significant. Iron men carry on and stop a Japanese push. Next book?
Cook's deft handling of carrier combat is unmatched. You feel the urgency, the fear, the sense of triumph and loss. At the end I was as choked up as his characters. Looking forward to the next story.
Mr. Cook's inclusion of the Japanese point of view made the story much more interesting. It put a slant on things I had not considered before. This is a really good series of historical novels. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
Basically a non-fiction account of actual personal, fliers of course, but also the bravery and courage of other USS Enterprise personnel. A must read for those who are interested in WW2. Especially the men who served in that conflict.
The details of the tactics are appreciated. There incidents that are probably true, but there are minor errors that in themselves are harmless, but leave new incidents in question.
Interesting book full of action. Story showed the good and bad of warfare. Great how the men worked together to take down the enemy and also should how many men /boys didn't get to make it home when the ships were hit by bombs .
Another well done for this series. Cook, once again, creates an interesting and compelling story out of a WW2 Pacific carrier duel. Managing all the moving parts of a battle like this requires an excellent command of history and a gifted storyteller.
Courage is overcoming fear to fight for oneself, shipmates, ship, and country! This is such a saga, overcoming the impossible and overwhelming battle action!
Keeps you involved and part of the action. Can't wai for the next one. Absolutely awesome series.Make sure you give it a read, you won't be disappointed. 😀
This novel was exceptional. The author wrote in detail everything that was happening. It was if you were there watching everything taking place. An excellent war time novel.
