Paper Doll

Rate this book
When my new stepdad sends me packing for Corvus College, I expect to take classes, have lunch on the quad, and maybe attend a few college parties.

What I don't expect is to fall prey to the dangerous trio of boys that rule the school.

The Kings.

Wes, the smooth-talking 'nice guy' who led me straight into the lion's den.

Ford, the unhinged, tatted-up bad boy who might be an actual psychopath.

And Raf, the broody leader who is determined to make my life a living hell because I'm his new stepsister.

I thought coming here was an opportunity to thrive, but now that they have me in their clutches, I'm not even sure if I'll survive.

The Kings play by their own rules, and they always get what they want. And right now... that's me.

Whoa...

I've been looking for a dark romance that is on the darker side with unapologetic alphaholes. They've put Ava through the ringer, more than once, and they're not even remorseful. I've not read a bu lly romance in a while, so Paper Doll hit the spot. The ending was a cliffhanger and I'm gonna need more and I'm gonna need the guys to snap out of it and take back what's theirs... excited for the next one!

I'll start by saying CJ Primer is one of my favorite authors and so far I have loved every single one of her books. All 5 stars.

Not this one though, and please bear in mind this is my opinion and not a slight on the author or her work. It's not a bad book and its well written and I know it is a bully romance, but I was so disappointed in the main character because I personally prefer one that is strong. I first thought she was going to be a strong FMC and yes, she is sassy at times but she did not stay that way. Every time the male characters did despicable things to her, she just came back for more. They won every time. Personally I want to see a FMC that gives the bully's a run for their money, even if it hurts her. One that fights back and does not constantly give in to them. I found myself skimming in the end. The way she gave in to them even after they belittled her and treated her like shit had me cringing. I guess that's the point of a bully romance.

I did not like any of the MMC's, not even a little at any stage of the entire book. My thoughts at the end were that I wouldn't give a shit if they all died. I honestly felt by the end that the FMC deserved her treatment as she allowed it. And there was nothing even slightly likeable about the MMC's, literally nothing that made me like them even for a second. Again, that's the point of the whole book and its brilliantly done.

My low rating is not because its a bad book, but just because I personally did not enjoy it. I am looking for that strong female lead who does not give it all up for orgasms. One who does not take that cup of coffee, or who does not ever let them think they have won. One who after being thoroughly humiliated does not say 'are we even now' even though she did nothing to deserve the humiliation. I've read a lot of dark bully stories and to be honest the FMC giving in too early or not fighting back every single time is why they are at the bottom of my list. I will still read the second one in the hope that she grows a spine very quickly and stops allowing people to walk all over her or somehow accept their treatment of her.

This book is packed with tension, angst and mean boys you can't help but fall for.

Cj is an auto buy author for me and no matter the genre she's writing in, her books always deliver a page turning experience that leaves you eager to jump into her next.

Bully/Academia is one of my favorite tropes to read and when you make it a RH/Why choose Bully/Academia, then its a jackpot. The way Ava gives the kings a run for their money no matter the insane things they do, keeps you on edge wondering how this will play out. The fact that this is a three book series just confirms the WILD ride you are in for. I highly recommend jumping into Corvus College for a spicy, angsty, plot twisting experience you will be all consumed by.

CJ Primer is by far one of my favorite authors. I’ve read every book she’s written. LOVED every book she’s written. ‘Paper Doll’ is no exception.

It is, in my opinion, the inkest black of her works. Good thing my favorite color is pitch.

Ava … well, the poor girl goes through so dang much—She hasn’t a single thing to deserve any of the darkness that comes her way. So, why? Maybe it’s not her that needs this journey …

Enter Wes, Ford, and Raf. Three more wretched souls in need of redemption you’ll be hard pressed to find. Each with his own set of demons. I wonder how they’re going to react when they find out where Ava is et the cliffhanger. If there’s any chance of redemption for all they’ve put her through, it better be nuclear.

Paper Doll | 4 ⭐️

I have both hated and fallen? for a couple of the Kings of Corvus. I still have many mixed feelings about these deranged MCs. They have very few redeeming qualities and every time I think they *might* be redeemable, they do something else and I am back to my original thought that these MCs are just monsters. I have read many bully romances but this one might just take the cake.

Poor Ava is undeserving of the cruel treatment the Kings have inflicted upon her. Literally everyone (except Bryce) has failed Ava. Her mother, step-father, step-brother, Ford and Wes have all played a huge part in her demise. My heart breaks for Ava and the way she has been treated. Even prior to her stay at Corvus College with the Kings. Ava baby deserves the world and I hope it is handed to her on a silver platter.

I have been captivated by this authors intense writing style and by the Kings of Corvus College. I am eagerly awaiting the next installment. Just when you think things can’t get all that worse, Ava is dumped into a new setting against her will. However, I suspect this one is much worse than Corvus College. This book ends on a major cliff-hanger but I am even more invested to see how things change for Ava baby. I am eager to see how the author redeems these seemingly irredeemable characters!

What to expect:
•dark why-choose (mfmm)
•secret society
•step brother
•enemies (to lovers??)
•forced proximity
•MMA fighting
•bully romance

Thank you to Book Siren’s and the author, C.J. Primer for the advanced copy.

“You’ve got a King on his knees. Look how good it is to be our Doll.”

This is the definition of a bully romance if I ever saw one. I swear every time one of the guys makes you think they are about to redeem themselves they look you straight in the eye and go "sike" with a smirk on their faces.

Ava was sent to Corvus College by her mom and stepdad without warning or explanation. When she looks for her stepbrother thinking that he's still the same kid that used to be nice to her when they were little, she finds herself in the crosshairs of the three most powerful men on campus, and in the middle of a lifestyle that she knows nothing about.

I loved Ava's sassiness and how she didn't let the guys break her. No matter how hard they came at her, she would always get back up and stand tall with her head held high.

I am dying to see what's going to happen next because if there's one thing the guys made clear it's that they can do whatever they want with Ava, but nobody else messes with King's property.

Quote: “I’m frantic with the desire to bring them to ruin, to let my stepbrother watch from the sidelines as his friends use me to chase their pleasure. I’m honestly not sure whether I want to piss him off or tempt him to join in.”

What a whirlwind…

Let me start off by saying that this book was my first Bully Romance. I thought I knew what I was in for, but I really was not. I am now very prepared moving forward when I do read any further Bully Romance novels.

The 3 MMCs in this book have very few redeeming qualities about them. Good looks? Yes. Absolute assholes? Yes. Evil? Also yes. While Raf’s rage is somewhat understandable, it does not excuse his behavior. I have a hard time reckoning with his, and the other Kings’, treatment of Ava.

And Ava….the horror she is put through is truly unimaginable. My heart broke for her nearly the entire book. The slight glimmer of hope the author gave us for her character at the end was immediately crushed with the massive cliff we were left hanging off of!!

Three star read for me - solid storyline, but the subject material was difficult to read. With so many secrets yet to be revealed, I am definitely curious enough that I will be reading the sequel when it comes out.

I love bully romances, and this one was no exception. Ava is spitfire who just wants to be left alone but this stunt her mom pulled leaving the country with little warning and then not answering her phone has thrown Ava to the wolves, er Kings. I loved the constant push and pull with her and the Kings. She may have conceded a few times but she never lost her fire. It should come as no surprise that her stepbrother is her biggest tormentor; but the other two are having just as much fun. I knew this wasn't going to be an HEA (yet), but the way it ended left me shocked. I can't wait for the next book!

3.5 rounded up to 4. There’s a lot of ideas/plot that I liked in this one. Obviously very dark, full of bullying and you need to check the TWs. I can see some influence from my fave series RoFU but the writing isn’t quite as strong. It’s not bad, the pacing is a little funky, it just gets a little repetitive, and sometimes the first person POV feels immature (which is not unique to this book). Overall enjoyed and will read the second when it comes out

It was an honor to review this book as an e-arc. Paper Doll is a Dark, Why Choose Bully Romance filled with spice and great plot. I was either on the edge of my seat because of the entertainment of what was happening or the spice. At times I was sweating and three shades of red due to the spice which made me a happy girl. I dont know what CJ Primier put in her pages but I will take 14 of them! I loved this book!

Our FMC Ava is all of a sudden forced to go to an Elite school after her mother marries her long time boyfriend. Her mother doesn't tell her the details as to why she is going there or where her mother is going or why really. But she knows that her estranged brother-in-law Raf goes there and that he hasn't been around much since his mother died. She was close to Raf growing up and hoped he would've attended the wedding but sadly he didn't so she thought he wouldn't be much help even though her mother and step father kept saying that they are family now and family looks out for family. When she gets to the school she finds out by one of the girls there that Raf is part of the "Three Kings" and that there is a secret society. In this secret society called Invictus each set of three kings has a doll and eventually the doll has to marry one of the kings in the group. In Raf's group is Ford, Wes and Raf. Ford and Wes end up really liking Ava but does Raf end up liking her and if so is it too late? You'll have to find out for yourself when you ready this amazing book! I will warn you it does end on a CLIFFHANGER which I really dont like but it does make the suspense grow for the next book and it will make the next one that much better once I get it.

I love a good unhinged MMC, but in this we have 3 unhinged MMC's and I ate it all up! I could not get enough of it! Thank you CJ Primier for giving me three more book boyfriends to add to my list. I think that list is almost as long as my TBR list if not longer. lol. I didn't put spoilers in this but I mean the ending is total betrayal, I could've put them in my review which is what I think spoilers are betrayal. That's what I feel Cliffhangers are too, betrayal; and it is killing me. So do we think we can hurry up a little bit and get book 2 in my hands because I need to know what happens and I need these men in my life again. It's killing me! (sorry small vent) Just kidding but not really. Please go and read this you will understand what I mean. TRUST ME!!

CJ Primier does a great job making you feel like you are in the story. There were times when I looked around me and had to remind myself that I was at home on my couch because she is descriptive and you can feel the words as you are reading them. I loved this book and I can not wait for the next one!

I want to thank CJ Primier and Book Sirens for allowing me to review this book. This has been my honest review of Paper Doll by Cj Primier. Please do yourself a favor and go read this book you will not be disappointed!!!

Ava Baby and her Kings
Okay, I needed a day to process the book before I sit down to write my review. Let's start with the fact that this book was a lot darker than my usual preferences, but still, it hooked me so much that I wanted to keep on going. I love the PRN books of CJ, and I wanted to give it a chance. I don't regret it.
The story is about Ava, the daughter of a call girl who is sent to college by her new stepfather. The college is ruled by three vicious guys, who named themselves kings and only know how to take, never to give back. Wes, Ford, and last but not least, her stepbrother Raf.
Honestly, I don't know who's the worst of the boys, and if you don't want spoilers, don't proceed reading my review.
About Wes, I liked him more of the three because he seemed to care, but in the last scene he's in, he lost me as his fan. So FU Wes!
Ford is all red flags from the beginning, but Ava is so drawn to him. He shows his true colors and in his own twisted way, he helps Ava overcome her hard situations she's in.
And Raf... Well, Raf hates Ava with vengeance, but MY OPINION is that he cares so much that he hates himself more. Because Ava is always in his mind, and along with his shadows are his constant torment. He's the most twisted of them, and I really hated him for what he did to the poor girl on Halloween.
Now, as for Ava, what can I say? They made a video of her and kept her like a puppet because of that. Well, she was bullied beyond normal and especially when she had to do a certain act in front of the people at the party, then she should stop it. But no, she didn't. She always thought there wasn't a choice, but I believe there always is one. It's a sad fact that she understood it towards the end of this book.
Now, as for the end, it's a massive cliffy and I can't decide if Gideon, Ava's stepfather, acted on his own or if the boys asked for her 'departure'. Well, to be honest, I want it to be the first option, and the boys to sweat in order to save her. Not that this will be their redemption, but they have to fight in order to win her or bring her back.
That's it. I've written a lot. If you're a dark romance reader, go read this book now. If not, read the triggers. There were a lot of instances that I felt uncomfortable, but that's me: I like to test my limits once in a while!

This is the first book I've read by this author which I picked up by an ARC, and what a book! I have to say my emotions ran the full gamut. This is definitely a darker bully romance.

Ava doesn't realise she will be receiving backlash from her mother and stepfather's affair, which then turns into marriage. When she suddenly gets whisked away from her community college to the prestigious Corvus College, she doesn't know why, but at least her stepbrother Raf is there, someone she hasn't seen in a long time. But he's going to become her worst nightmare. He will take all his anger for her mother's role in stealing his father away from his mother when they both needed him the most. The depths he will go to demean, hurt, and turn the full school against her, knows no bounds.

Raf and his best friends Wes and Ford are the Kings of Corvus College. Their rule is absolute. They run the Campus, the Faculty, Security, and even the local police force, and no one goes against them. Raf wants to make Ava's life a living hell but at the same time, he is attracted to her, which causes his already volatile emotions to spiral when she is around.

Ford the most psycho of the three of them, is very attracted to her and wants to use her as their plaything, he doesn't do feelings, women are just there to satisfy his urges but will that change over time while Ava is around, even though he may not acknowledge it.

Wes is the more amiable of the group, he still has his dark side, but he is the more approachable of the three. He was the first to see Ava before he knew who she was and wanted her. He has a softer spot for her, even though he will let leash his darker side if Ava doesn't comply.

This book had me from the get-go. I read it in one sitting. It's hard to deal with how these men treat Ava, how they view her as a toy, something they can break and put back together, just to break again. They have Ava's emotions all over the place. When she thinks they may be starting to like her, they turn around and do something despicable.

The worst part is it leaves us on a cliffhanger and we have to wait a good few months before the next one is released, and I need to know! Fingers crossed it gets released earlier…..Well, one can hope!

Thank you to Book Sirens and the author for providing me with a free review copy so that I may freely provide my honest review of my reading experience.

Ava, our FMC, is suddenly thrust into a world of secret societies and control when she is shipped off to an elite private college when her mother marries her long time client. This is where she meets Ford and Wes (2 of our 3 MMC's) and reunites with Raf, her now stepbrother (and 3rd MMC). Ava is expected to excel and Raf is expected to protect the new stepsister that he absolutely loathes. Little does know at the start, that Raf, Ford and Wes are the current "kings" of the college branch of the Corvus society.

Character wise, the story is rather thrilling. Ava, is the very epitome of a paper doll. She is what she is so that she is protected and controlled, but that doesn't mean that she has to like it. It does, however mean that she does have to take it. Raf, Ford and Wes, puppet her and control her to the extreme.. even going to the degree of blackmail. She hates it. And they hate the fact that they are beginning to kind of like her.

Raf, is in denial that he likes her at all. He hates her and her mother for taking his mothers place in the family. He wants to destroy her. And he will go to literally any length to do so. Ford, is a pscyho that primarily wants to use Ava as his sextoy. He wants to use her body and her mind, willing or not. Wes is significantly kinder than the other two when it comes to Ava, but that doesn't mean that he treats her kindly.

Story wise and emotion wise, this story had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I read it all in one sitting and lord have mercy upon my soul.. that ending. *stares at the author* there is a second book coming out soon right? Cause.. I *need* to ARC read it.

This is book is a great dark romance book with just the right amount of detail, story, world building and character growth. I highly recommend it.

Paper Doll is book one of the Kings Of Corvus College series.
C.J. Primer you wicked lady you, I could not put this book down. You had me at the dedication, and then the prologue hits and my jaw was on the floor. It absolutely consumed me. The way I devoured this book was no joke. There was so much angst, tension, spice, bad boy delicousness. [*high pitch squeeling*]
Where to even start with this dark bully romance? I loved the twisted plot and these characters were writen so well. I was set upon an emotional roller-coaster. I didn't know which way was up. Ava our FMC though young, i found her to be a likeable character. The fire within her and her ambitions were admirable.

"The Kings": Wes, Ford, and Raf are the 3 MMCs and they are each uniquely delicous and so morally gray. I hate them but oh how I also love these evil b*ztardz. What is it about pierced, tatted, built men?

(My toxic trait is I'd like to be "bullied" by these guys...)

I loved how each of their dynamics evolved and how the story progressed. I just wish book 2 were out already! I will be eagerly waiting with greedy grabby hands after that cliff.

“You’ve got a King on his knees. Look how good it is to be our Doll.”

OMG! This was one of the best bully dark RH romances that I have read in a long time. It was incredibly emotional, gut-wrenching at times and with edge of your seat intensity. It also had an ending that left me yelling WTF!!!

Ava is thrown into a world she has no idea about – the rich and privileged. Being thrown into it without warning tips her world on its axes. She tries very hard to remain fierce and strong as she faces some of the worst kinds of bullies. Little does she realize that the biggest bullies will come in the form of the most powerful men on the campus, The Kings.

The Kings (Wes, Ford and Raf) want to break Ava and they do everything they can in order to do so. But they have no idea what this little spitfire of a woman is going to do to them in the process.

The banter between Ava and The Kings was filled with her sassiness, some very intense pushing and pulling, and crazy sexual tension. Ava never gives up and doesn’t back down easily, so you can just imagine how The Kings retaliate to break her. SO FREAKING HOT!!!!

“I’m frantic with the desire to bring them to ruin, to let my stepbrother watch from the sidelines as his friends use me to chase their pleasure. I’m honestly not sure whether I want to piss him off or tempt him to join in.”

I was on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with anxiety, and gasping at all of the shocking and despicable things that happen in this first part of the story. I need to know what the hell is going to happen next because that cliffhanger ending nearly killed me.

Title: Paper Doll (Kings of Corvus College: Book 1)
Author: C.J. Primer

Review: I received an (ARC) Advanced Reader Copy for MY honest review.

Ava is shipped off to Corvus College by her new stepdad, what she didn't take in to account was the trio of bad boys that would make her life a living hell. She is quick to learn who runs the school and no one get in their way, especially of what the want. One night at a party changed Ava's life, now she is subjected to do whatever the Kings want, whenever they want and there's nothing she can do about it.
Wes is the smooth talking pretty boy who lured Ava in. Ford is the sexy tattooed psycho with a split personality. Raf is the worst of them all, he is the most gorgeous guy Ava has ever laid eyes on, but like a moth to a flame she is destined to get burned.

This... this is why I don't usually start a series until it's complete because now I have to wait until Jan 2026 to get my next hit!

This is my first book by C.J. Primer and I have mixed feelings. I actually really loved this book minus the SA, because let's call it what it was, yuck. I had a love/hate relationship with the MMC's, I absolutely wanted to kick all their asses at some point or another throughout, especially in the last few chapters. The FMC had me in a complete meltdown, what a doormat! She just kept going back after everything they did to her. I prefer a stronger FMC that gives as good as she gets but Ava just left me feeling disappointed. And don't even get me started on that cliffy..... paaaalease!
I need book 2, like now!!

Paper Doll by CJ Primer is a deeply dark, intense bully romance that pulls no punches. If you’re considering diving into this one, check the trigger warnings first—this story goes to some brutal places.

The plot follows Ava as she enters the most exclusive college in the country, expecting opportunity and success, only to find herself trapped in a waking nightmare. She catches the attention of The Kings—Rafa (her stepbrother), Ford, and Wes—three powerful, merciless men who rule the campus like a pack of cruel, untouchable psychopaths. Once Ava is on their radar, her life becomes their playground, and she quickly learns that in their territory, they set the rules—and everyone obeys.

The Kings break Ava (and boy, do they break her). Isolated and tormented, she fights back as much as she can, but eventually, survival means surrender. And yet, beneath all the twisted power games, something begins to shift. Each of the Kings starts to develop an unwilling, dangerous weakness—for Ava.

This is the first book in a trilogy and ends on a cliffhanger that will leave you scrambling for the next one. It's exceptionally well-written, loaded with tension and spice that makes it hard to put down. That said, even for seasoned dark romance readers, some scenes are emotionally heavy and disturbing.

Paperdoll isn’t for the faint of heart—but if you’re drawn to pitch-black romances with razor-sharp edges and psychological intensity, this one will pull you in and refuse to let go.

Thoughts:
This was a high heat rollercoaster for me, and I loved it and can’t wait until book 2. The push pull between Ava and her bullies was electric. Reading this was like driving by an accident and trying not to look- as each chapter unfolded there was a new horror for Ava to live through. I’m not sure which of the boys was more unhinged, but despite this, Ava seemed to be wearing them down just by being defiant and contrary. The amount of bullying they put her through was epic, with her slowly starting to give in to them and she starts to find she gets off on the debasement. She stops them from going all the way through most of the book, but the spice is still 5 chilis as they get off in all different combinations. This was so dark and twisted that I would hesitate to even call it a romance- we’ll see if these unhinged men are able to redeem themselves after the cliffhanger ending.

Wow what a wild right and an exciting first book to this series! This is a dark why choose bully romance. The FMC Ava finds out her mom and step dad are sending her to this elite school where her step brother also goes to. Her step bro Raf used to play with her when they were young and care free, but now he has hardened his heart believing the death of his mom was his dads fault which makes him automatically hate the new step mom. Oh and that little girl he used to play with? Not so little anymore and what a great way to get revenge than to put her in her place with his two friends Wes and Ford? They are called the kings at their University but they are also a part of a secret society called Invictus. Every trio of kings has to choose a doll, the doll has to be initiated into the society, and one of the kings ends up marrying the doll. Ford and Wes actually started liking Ava but Raf stayed hard headed all the way up until it was too late. This book ends on a cliffhanger, and I know the next book will show us exactly why Ava’s mom hasn’t been able to call her and what the dollhouse is. I know it’s nothing good and I’m scared to find out what other horrors await Ava once she wakes up from being drugged and kidnapped. Oh silly girl just left campus early in the morning while the guys were still sleeping too..thinking she was escaping hell just to fall into her step dad’s perfectly laid out trap and into something much worse. I can’t wait to read the next book!

Review: Paper Doll by C.J. Primer

Paper Doll, Kings of Corvus College by C.J. Primer was my first dive into this author’s work, and what a tantalising journey it turned out to be. This dark, dubious, "why choose" reverse harem romance pulled me in from the very first chapter—and didn’t let go. It’s an emotive, intense read that explores the twisted boundaries of desire, power, and connection in a world where enemies can become lovers and nothing is quite what it seems.

Each chapter had me mentally counting the pages, not because I wanted it to end, but because I was eager—and admittedly a little anxious—to see just how far Primer would push the limits. And let me tell you, she does push them.

If you're a fan of enemies-to-lovers or bully romance tropes, you'll find this hits all the marks: emotional highs and lows, dangerously magnetic characters, and an atmosphere soaked in tension. The Kings of Corvus College are dark, complicated, and at times infuriating—but impossible to look away from. You want to see them change, even as you’re not sure they can.

Ava’s story—her descent into the tangled web of the Kings—becomes addictive. The mystery behind their obsession with her kept me hooked, and now I’m desperate to know what happens next.

This isn’t a light read. It’s gritty, provocative, and not for the faint-hearted—but if you enjoy morally grey characters and taboo-laced romance, C.J. Primer is one to watch.

(Dark Romance, academia (college setting), why choose (MFMM), secret society, stepbrother, bully romance, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, secrets & lies, multi-POVs) *PLEASE read the trigger warnings and make sure this book is right for you!*

This book took me on a wild, thrilling and delicious ride! The captivating plot and unhinged Kings grabbed me by the throat and had me begging for more with every page turn. Well done CJ. WELL DONE!

C.J. Primer excels at writing intriguing and complex characters without directly explaining who they are and what they have been through. She SHOWS this in her writing. She shows their distinct and interesting personalities through their actions and reactions to various situations. This made me connect to them and kept me captivated!

Ava is sweet, innocent and naive and the new transfer college student. The Kings, a triad selected by the secret society, of Corvus College are the complete opposite. Wes is the popular playboy with a wicked smile and flirtatious ways. Ford is the unhinged, smart and psychotic techie and true mastermind. Then there is Raf, Ava's new Stepbrother, who is the dark, mysterious leader out to destroy her. These boys put Ava through so much and she must learn to adapt or let the Kings consume her. (Pun totally intended.)

This story had me FEELING so many things and that truly speaks to the great writing. I was nervous, on edge, grinning, blushing, swooning, broken and raging through out. All the feelings.

This book does end on cliffhanger. I need MORE. I need book 2...RIGHT NOW!

This is a 3.5 for me; it kept me engaged but it was just a little too bleak for me. The MMCs are awful to Ava and right now I'm struggling to root for any of them to deserve her. There are a couple of glimpses of basic human decency but they are few and far between and we are constantly reminded that they want to break her. I like a bully romance but I felt it was all bully, no romance in this one.

There were things I liked though such as Raf's motivation for hating Ava's mother. That genuinely felt believable and was much more interesting than her being a simple replacement stepmother. It was also quite a tense read as the bullying is pretty grim and I am invested in the society element as well as the whole doll subplot. The issues with the parents were hinted at just enough for me to guess the ending (although not quite on the nose). It definitely feels like its going to get worse before it gets better but I'm always open to a redemption arc!

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read.

Vulnerable girl is dragged into the elite politics and dark games of the three ruthless Kings who rule Corvus College.

This is the closest book I've found that matches the vibe of the Lords from the Royals of Forsyth series. Some plot elements are very copycat: three guys who rule a college campus pick a girl to be "theirs,” FMC is a virgin, one of the MMCs is her stepbrother and he's obsessed with her but fights the feelings hard. However, these were all things I loved about the Lords so I was more than happy to turn off my brain and just enjoy the ride. The tension between the four main characters is excellent and there’s a lot of spicy scenes.

Ava, the FMC, is probably the weakest part of the book because she's a bit passive/doormat. She has flashes of feistiness, but they never really impact the plot or show real character growth. At one point, she claims she’s going to get dirt on the guys and take them down from the inside, but this never actually happens. Also, unlike Story (from Royals of Forsyth), who knowingly signed up for the craziness, Ava is dragged into it and then spends most of the book feeling stuck, without ever really trying to spy, play the game, or change her circumstances. Still, Book 2 is out later this year, and there’s a great cliffhanger, so I’ll definitely be reading it.

What a ride it has been!🎢 the book is dark (really dark), why choose, college, bully, secret society romance. Every one of my go to tropes combined in one book 🥰😍, and what a book it was. I had so many feelings while reading this book..

I loved Ava and Wes, Ava because she was an FMC with a backbone and I just know she will keep on growing throughout the next books and Wes because most of the time he showed somewhat "remorse". And then there was Ford, he was something else 🥵. We also have Raf who made me angry most of the time, I just hope he redeems himself in the next books of the series. He has a lot of making up to do! Ava should definitely make him work for it 😁

And the end, what?!

Why even 😭 talking about betrayal… This is a cliffhanger that will keep on haunting me during this waiting time! Especially since the subtle mentions can't mean anything good..

Please read the trigger warnings before starting this book since it is dark as in blacker than black 🙈 but that is just my jam, absolutely loved it 😍

Can't wait for the second book, and in the meanwhile I will keep on thinking about Ava and her guys..

All Ava ever wanted was to get ahead and make something of herself. When her stepdad enrolled her in Corvus College, she thought it was a guaranteed way into any job she she would apply to after graduation. But what she didn't realize is that Corvus College was ruled by the Kings. And they always get what they want; which just so happened to be her.

'They break so much more beautifully when they've got some fight in them.'

Before Ava realizes it, she's willing to play their games. Even when she knows, it will only break her.

'I don't want to reward Ava, I want to break her. Ruin her.'

After a month of being put through the wringer from the Kings of Corvus College, Ava finally realizes she's had enough. Still reeling and wondering what to do, questioning what happened to her mother, she finally gets a call. But when Ava answers the phone expecting her mom, she's disappointed to hear her step father instead. That is, until he offers to come pick her up the next morning and Ava is all but too pleased to leave her tormentors. Little did Ava know, that it was far from over yet. In truth, it only just began.

This book does have spice, and there is a page to read before you begin. This book ends on a cliffhanger so buckle up, the Kings are coming.

Paper Doll by C.J. Primer is book one in the Kings of Corvus College series and boy is it a dark and triggered read. The story focuses on Mia who is packed off to a new college by her mum and new step day (something dodgy going on there), where she falls prey to her stepbrother Raf and his friends Ford and Wes, the kings of the college and who are there to make Mia’s life as difficult as possible! Think blackmail, bullying, questionable situations and a whole lot more. Mia in turn becomes the boy’s property and boy do they put her through the ringer (and not always on a nice way!) But Mia doesn’t go down easy and tries as hard as she can to not fall victim to the boys, even when they turn on the charm.

This book is definitely filled with twists and turns, and you are left guessing about what is going to happen to Mia at the end and whether her boys will step up. If you like dark, bully reads then this is a good book to while away a good couple of hours.

Be advised that the author has suggested triggers and warnings in this book that could be triggering.

I think I've found an author I'm going to buy everything from because this book is fantastic and I'm already waiting impatiently for the next book.

Ava is sent to Corvus College after her mother marries into wealth, only it's not at all what she expects; wanting an education to become more than her mother was, she's thrust into a living nightmare; her new stepbrother and his friends are set out to destroy her.

Ava, I honestly couldn't tell if I liked her character at all; she's a mix of naïve and honestly a little gullible, and an absolute mess.  I kept yelling at my Kindle, telling her to run before it ended up far worse, but sadly, book characters never listen when I yell.

The kings of Corvus are completely and utterly horrid, especially Rafe, a broken narcissist; Wes at least had a heart, but Ford is a complete psychopath.

Ava said it best in regards to Rafe.

" Rafes not the kind of guy who's content with just breaking your heart.  He's not satisfied until he tears it from your chest, carves it to pieces and watches you bleed out."

I desperately want book two, although in saying that, I kind of hope Ava breaks herself free, comes back filled with feminine rage, and takes out the Kings, ruining them completely. Would make a pretty picture.

Oooooof, where do I begin? Paper Doll is absolutely going to live in my head for a looong time. I sat on this review for a bit because I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about it. I still don’t know how I feel! First, I think the author and I have VERY different definitions of non-con, dub-con, and r@pe. It says none of the latter between MCs, but I beg to differ. I knew what I was getting into, so I can’t say I was entirely surprised, I just don’t think we call those actions the same thing. Next, in my opinion, the public activities and degradation Ava were subjected to seem so much worse than the blackmail. I also thought, for as much as Raf seemed to love his mother, and his mother being a Doll, I would’ve expected him to treat a Doll better than he did. I’m super invested in this story and want to see where it goes. I’m really hoping life gets better for Ava and she finds her voice and backbone. I don’t think I can handle if she ends up like a Stockholm syndrome victim. I’m not ever expecting the Kings to become good guys, but I hope they become good FOR AVA.

Alright, so this book is definitely on the darker side of the romance shelf. Ava ends up at this college, and almost immediately she's caught in the twisted games of these three guys who basically rule the campus. They're not just your typical mean kids; they're manipulative and enjoy making Ava's life miserable. It's the kind of story where you know things are going to get pretty uncomfortable, but you can't look away.
What I found interesting was the dynamic between Ava and these guys. She's not a pushover, and she pushes back in her own way, even when she's clearly at a disadvantage. It creates this constant tension where you're wondering who's going to break first. These guys are definitely the bullies, but Ava has a spark that keeps things from being totally one-sided. It's a complicated relationship that makes you question a lot of things.
The author does a good job of building the suspense, and there are always these little hints that things are going to get even crazier. The ending, though, is a real punch to the gut. It leaves Ava in a seriously vulnerable position, and you're left wondering how she's ever going to get out of it. It's the kind of cliffhanger that makes you want to throw your book across the room but then immediately pick it back up to see if there are any clues about what happens next.
