This is an older book, published in 1990, that I read along with books by his two sons (David, REZ LIFE and Anton, WARRIOR NATION) that were published in 2012 and 2015, respectively. I wanted to compare the writing of these three family members as I read their books. In this book, he writes essays that capture a year in the life of the Treuer family when David and Anton "Tony" were 9 and 11. In these essays, he captures the natural phenomena of living in the North woods of Northwestern Minnesota, social issues of living by an Indian reservation, and the joys and struggles within their family. I especially enjoyed reading about David and Anton and the descriptions of their personalities as children. Later in David's book, he captures the personalities of both of his parents, twenty-two years later. The book is written honestly, openly, and with a joy towards all that life throws his way. While the book is almost 30 years old, I didn't feel the book was dated in any way except for the ages of the family members.
