Hidden in Plain Sight is the perfect combination of adventure, mystery, friendship and hidden treasure! When Kong Kong tells the Lee cousins about the hidden family treasure, no one really believes that it will be true. But after a secret is discovered in Kong Kong's old house, the cousins-Jen, Meng, Gabriel, Nat, Alex and his friend Din, get together to try and solve an age old mystery concerning their family's hidden treasure, by solving complex puzzles boxes, using ciphers and morse code and reaching a startling conclusion-the treasure was right under their noses!
a great book to read to your children, especially those who grew up in Singapore/Malaysia as there are many local games, traditions, slang one can relate to growing up in these lands. There should be more well written books like this centering around lives of people from Singapore/Malaysia. Ang Su Lin has done a remarkable job with this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This was a fun and quick read. It took me only a few hours and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire story. It took me a few chapters to understand the premise, but once I got hooked, I couldn't put the book down. Jen was adorable and relatable. I remember thing why adults behaved superiorly when I was her age and the sibling squabbles give a realistic dimension to the story. I haven't read many book where in the are childish disagreements and fights, but this nailed that aspect. I did spot a few cases of head hopping, but it wasn't very noticeable. I'll get to the point and talk about the main theme. Most of he book is about codes and puzzles, and I think they were described marvelously. The were codes like the Morse code, Arnold cipher, and Cipher wheel. The concepts were simply and we'll written, considering that this is a children's book. I'll also mention that there were many Asian words in the book, which are informative for anyone looking for a dose of information along with entertainment. The story is also set in the 1960's, so we get to see some historical eve on the way. The words are accompanied by beautiful illustrations which make reading much easier and enjoyable. If you're looking for an entertaining read to gift someone young, this is a good choice, but I'd say even teenagers can love it.
It stimulates my desire to get through some of the secret codes systems such as Morse code. Recommended to Malaysians and Singaporeans as this book has Sgp and Msia in the 1960s as the background of the story.
Great story that takes place in Singapore. I loved the familiarity of all of the foods, and the language (a bit of malay--which is quite similar to indonesian)-- Great story of cousins coming together to solve a puzzle. It was nice to read something that takes place in a familiar country outside of the US.
