This is a gorgeous book. As I leaf through it, I see covers of books I own, covers of books I now want to own, images from video games, sketches next to the finished art. Page 227 is a wonderful example of the breadth of the illustrations. We go from The Flying Dutchman to Robot Lady on a single page, with stops at The Winger Landscape and Turtle Temple.
On page 118, there is an unused illustration for Royal Assassin. It's Fitz crouching down to peer into the crate that holds as yet unnamed wolf.
Page 130, an illustration for Riverdream by George RR Martin.
And this book smells just wonderful. For people like me who care about such things!
It’s s’posed to be a collab with other artists detailing a myriad of different styles and works joined together. What we’re instead presented with is a hodge-podge of primarily Simonetti showing off his personal ventures with some other artists items interspersed here and there. There were some good pieces in here, but they were few, and they definitely weren’t Simonetti’s work. Despite having so many pieces ascribed to his name Marc’s style never really evolved past a certain point and it’s rather telling with much of his art.
Marc’s work has a tendency to sink into an uncanny valley of of something not-quite-right with his drawings. Faults such as incorrect proportions, faces having large black linework over the eyes like everyone is wearing mascara, over-exaggerated saucer-like eyes whenever he tried to convey the emotion of surprise, thick outlines on a character’s individual teeth, bland, dull faces absent of any emotion, stiff character figures. One could say that these are merely stylistic choices employed by the artist, similar to the likes of Picasso, but he could create decent works when he tried. Marc missed learning a basic fundamentals of character design and rendering, and it protrudes out like a fistula in each of his work. Oh, and good luck to you if you’ve never read A Song of Ice and Fire, or the Discworld series - the majority of the book is devoted to Simonetti’s sub-par self-exemplified works in the matter. Oh, and did I mention that Marc was selling these for >$50? Matt Rhodes posted his entire Tellurion series on Instagram for free, and his work is leagues above anything Marc could even dream of. Kushinov Ilya does faces well, Marc doesn’t, and he’ll charge you to look at his art, too. What a guy.
Absolutely gorgeous art, and a really interesting look into the process of drawing for various authors, how involved they are, and what it takes to end up with the beautiful final products you see throughout this book.
I love his art style, how versatile it is, how he can capture an emotion, a world, and condense it into a breathtaking package that makes you want to immediately read whatever he's depicting.
I will never tire of flipping through these pages. An absolute work of art, through and through.
This is an absolutely beautiful book - Marc Simonetti's covers are simply stunning. Perfect for fans of Terry Pratchett, George R.R. Martin and fantasy/sci-fi art in general.
