Espero ver "Água turva" indicado a muitos prêmios literários!

3.5. When I first read about this book, the premise reminded me so much of another I had just read recently: The Home of the Drowned by Elin Anna Labba and translated by Elizabeth Clark Wessel. Both books center around a hydroelectric dam whose installation will result in the drowning of whole villages and communities. And while the Labba book was actually about the repeated drowning of a Sámi village, the Kretzmann more so uses the dam as a catalyst to tell a story about the history of two families whose past has been loaded with secrets, betrayal, and corruption that, at long last, is being brought to the light of day.

There are quite a few characters in this novel and I did need to refer to the family trees in the beginning to orient myself as the timeline moves from the present to the past and the reader gets to know the origins of decades long grudges and just how the present mess came to be. There’s a lot more action and plot here than I usually tend to go for but I did a good chunk of this book on audio and the story worked well in that format (but only after you establish who all of the characters are and their relationships to one another!).

The characters are perhaps not the most realistically drawn, it’s hard to give depth and multidimensionality to so many characters in so few pages, and even harder when the story is moving at a breakneck pace. So much of the book depends on the reader being invested and caring about the troubled history and dynamics between the families so it ends up being a bit of a fatal flaw for the reader to not end up really caring about the fate of any of them.

Kretzmann is raising awareness here about the need for environmental conservation in vulnerable ecosystems and highlighting political corruption along the border between Argentina and Brazil. Even if the execution is a bit muddled, it’s a worthy message and clearly a cause very close to the author’s heart.

Seria a Preta?

Thank you Morgan's Kretzmann and NetGalley for the advanced audiobook of this novel.

Latin American literature is always so intense when it comes to violence and corruption and this book is no exception. Corporations coming in and padding the pockets of corrupt leaders lookong for a kickback.

The characters were pretty complex. I enjoyed reading some strong female lead characters from this location. I also enjoyed the amount of nature writing woven into the story; it really helped visualize the locations and how different they are from North America.

The narration was great, I loved the authors use of native languages despite this being a English translation. It really added to the cultured feel of the novel.

Good read.

Environmental fiction meets speculative mystery thriller - Yes, please. The Red Earth is is winding novel set on the border of Brazil and Argentina and the scandal-ridden offices of the Brazilian government. Told through multiple perspectives across about 60 years, we follow one family's deep connection to the earth and their intertwined fate with another family driven by a violent need to survive. At times, the narrative can be hard to follow with the section or chapter listing one date only to skip to the future or the past with very little warning.

The writing is mostly factual with short sentences that give you a lot of sequential detail about what is happening. This changes when we get to descriptions of the land which are descriptive and lush even down to explanations on how the vegetation smelled.

If you're here for family drama and self-serving politicians, there is no shortage of each. Thankfully there is a family tree. Reference it often to keep track of who is who and where they fall in relationship to the grandfather and great hero of the novel. Everything revolves around respecting this man yet aside from understanding his love for the protected land, the endangered jaguar, and devotion to his family - we're left to wonder quite a bit about him.

My only harsh criticism is twofold. First: several moments in the novel are contrived and absolutely written with a movie deal in mind. The advantage is that the reader can clearly imagine the scene exactly as the author/translator intended, The disadvantage is that it feels like something I've watched on TV more than once. Second: It took so long to get to the reason behind everyone's anger. The multiple mistakes leads to a meaningful message about no one being perfect and essential themes of forgiveness but after the mistakes and incidences being alluded to so vaguely so many times, I was tired and just wanted to know what everyone did that was so wrong.

Be mindful of many potential triggers - animal violence, workplace harassment, assault, child neglect, physical abuse.

Overall, I enjoyed this. I was never bored or disinterested and I would recommend it to others.

At the Brazil-Argentina border - a proposed hydroelectric dam is threatening the vibrant ecosystems of the Turvo State Park. THE RED EARTH follows three women - park ranger Chaya, her hunter cousin Preta and the journalist Olga - who take their own actions.

Through short chapters, this is about the connection between two families, the family's bond with the land and how far they are willing to risk to save their land. Amidst some tragedies, there's plenty of grudge and resentment inside a family, rendering a family drama plagued by past secrets and burden. On a macro view, Kretzmann exposes corruption, political dispute and power in a parallel narrative that revolves around environmental disaster.

In this multitude of cruelty, it's hard not to be infuriated. The characters are messy and often unlikable, and one witnesses them justifying the mistakes yet unable to avoid the price that they have to pay. I think they are well-crafted but the amount of characters makes it confusing at times (even with the family tree). Another aspect that might challenge readers is the shifting between timelines and POVs - the author trusts the reader to digest, however, this fair execution weakens the impact and demands some patience from the reader. In the need for survive, I appreciate the incorporation of local culture/folklore that adds richness to the legacy in several ways.

Echoing episodes of Brazilian history, THE RED EARTH (tr. Daniel Hahn) is an ecological thriller that is relevant for its historical context and bringing awareness to environmental conservation.

Thank you to NetGalley for the review copy!

A leader's disappearance splits already frayed family relations between his children and divides local alliances. Years later his granddaughters and one girl whose path stems from his legacy find their lives clashing again. Will old grudges mend or turn into a cylindrical curse?

A proposed hydro-electric plant promises to bring wealth and jobs to a town at the border of Brazil and Argentina. Chaya only wants to keep the nature park safe from development. It is her grandfather's legacy after all. Preta, the other granddaughter, has become a leader of a local group of traditionalists who may also smuggle commodities. The forest provides her livelihood and way of life. Olga, ostracized for a teenage rebellion, knows the project is a destructive cash grab by those already abusing their power. Whistle-blowing could be her way into journalism. Possibly even gain her redemption to the community and a potentially vengeful spirit.

Different motivations. Conflicting priorities. Mutual adversaries. One place in common.

I often find it difficult to review books that I see the core value in but feel are structural weak. Or have a writing style that I don't feel serve the story well or simply don't care for. “The Red Earth” is one of those stories. It's hard to tell how much can be attributed to the original vs. its translation. Sometimes a linguistic style is hard for directly convey for even the most dedicated translator.

I never really felt I knew the characters personally. I wasn't drawn into the moment. This book stated things in blunt statements and concise sentences. It was almost like I was going through bullet points instead of being drawn into their lives. It made several feel more like a prototype than an individual.

It might have helped if the book was a little longer. If the family's past had been organized a little differently. If we'd been given more time to get the feel what the characters had been through. Or if certain perspectives were ditched in favor of coming from our leads' personal or relayed memories.

It absolutely would have helped Olga's characterization. One moment she's rightfully bitter about her situation but still stuck on course. The next she's panicked, resentful, and on a social crusade that matches more of her youthful ambitions. I also would have appreciated the investigation to not have seemed so fast, simple, and full of very ill considered choices.

This writing style also washes out the magical realism element. The land is at the heart I of the story but I never caught onto the atmosphere. There were occasional mentions of the color or smell of soil and wildlife. But none of the 'pulse' I'd expect that natural places have.

I wanted to fall in love with this book. The subject of old communities, technology, resource destruction, corruption of government and commerce, conservation, and nature's vitality are near universal. Relevant to our modern world. The different perspectives of the problem through the three girls is well rounded. Something can hold importance for multiple reasons. For those who are concerned with these things first and foremost it's a recommendable read. But if you come to a story for well developed characters and immersive writing, this is going to disappoint.

Thank you so much Harper Via forsending me a gifted copy and providing an ALC / ARC via Netgalley.

First of all, the packaging of this one is really quite beautiful. The jacket cover is gorgeous and when you remove it, the shade of green and detail on the hardcover and the brown inside, both which match the branch on the front cover, I don't know, I just found it really stunning, and it all goes well with the overall setting of the story.

The story itself is mostly a multigenerational dual family drama; honestly, so much hasty accusations and actions, the hostility, the violent discord amongst parents and children, spouses, cousins, grandparents and grandkids, the generational trauma - it hurt my heart reading it and it got old for me, fast. There are quite a few characters and fortunately there are family trees included in the physical book to reference, which I kept having to do for about the first 100 pages. I attempted to utilize the audiobook but couldn't do it; not just because of the surplus of characters but frankly I didn't like the narrator. We primarily bounce between the three main female POVs both in the present but also with their families in the past. Chapters are short, and it moves at a quick pace. There were aspects I liked and others I struggled with.

Ultimately, it was a tougher book to read, mostly due to content, though it certainly wasn't the toughest book I read for WIT month, and I can see this being one that hits for a niche group of readers. I'm glad I got the opporunity to read it as this is a part of the world I had never read from before. And that was the point, right? To expand my knowledge and experience by stepping into unfamiliar territory.

Content includes workplace harassment, gun and physical violence (sometimes resulting in death), profanity, and brief animal cruelty.

On the Brazil-Argentina border lies Turvo State Park, home to the dramatic Yucumã Falls on the Uruguai River. Guarding this ecosystem from the predations of poachers and developers is park ranger Chaya, whose beloved great-grandfather, Sarampião, mysteriously disappeared (or was murdered; it’s not clear) in 1957 while trying to protect a jaguar from illegal hunters. Across the river in Argentina lives Chaya’s estranged cousin, Preta, who heads an outlaw band of poachers and smugglers. Meanwhile, Olga, working as a press liaison for a corrupt and sexist state legislator, returns to her hometown to present the government’s case for a hydroelectric dam to be built in the region. The three women’s paths soon converge when Olga realizes she can scuttle the much-opposed project if she can provide evidence of government corruption. But she needs Chaya and Preta’s help. Brazilian author Kretzmann’s first novel to be published in English is a disjointed and muddled read that can’t decide whether it is an eco-thriller or a family drama with a hint of magical realism. Without more detailed political and social context (that the translator’s notes will hopefully provide), most American readers will simply be confused. A major factor is the author’s decision to jump back and forth in time, skipping generations, so occasionally the reader couldn’t figure out who is who and how they are related to each other, despite the family genealogy provided at the beginning of the book. As a result, the three protagonists are flatly drawn, and the reader doesn’t much care why they are so angry with each other. The ending also felt very rushed and patched together. A shame because the novel raises some timely and important issues.

This was very promising at first, but too many flaws spoiled my reading experience.

The main issue was the sheer number of protagonists. It was often difficult to understand what was happening between them or even remember who was who. I don't think the problem was the large cast itself, as I've read many novels with dozens of characters and had no trouble following their relationships. Rather, I felt the author failed to create enough cohesion to keep the reader oriented. In fact, it took me more than half the book to fully grasp how everyone was connected. To my relief, I discovered that many other readers had the same experience. The structure, with its frequent flashbacks, probably didn't help either.

The technical, almost journalistic writing style was another major drawback for me. Every chapter opens like a camera establishing a scene, with economical, restrained, documentary-like prose that often made me feel as though I were reading a report. The scene-setting is clear and effective, but the narrator remains outside the characters' emotions, leaving little room for psychological depth.

What I appreciated most was the exploration of environmental issues within the context of Brazilian politics and corruption. The impact of hydroelectric dams on people's lives was particularly interesting. The novel also features several strong female characters, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, I never became emotionally invested in them (or fully grasped their dynamics?) which made many of the dramatic moments fall often flat for me. Unfortunately, even these compelling themes couldn't make up for the novel's other shortcomings. I also found Sarampião's backstory underdeveloped and confusing, despite its importance to the plot.

A novel that starts strongly but, in my opinion, ultimately fails to hold together because of its lack of cohesion, confusing character dynamics, and a writing style that never quite makes you care about the characters.

Começou bem e me vi lendo super rápido o livro.

This is a fast paced and emotional book centered around generational family myths and current day corrupt politics. I really loved the insight to all sides and how they have to work for conservation together.

The characters are all well fleshed out and easily connected to, easy to view things from their POV.

The book opens with family members on opposing sides of a community, and as the story is told we get pieces of context from the past that led them to present day. Government officials want to build a dam that will potentially flood an entire conservation area where the last jaguars of Brasilia live.

Will they make amends and work together in the end or pull further apart?
