Note: This Special Edition includes the bonus novella Snuggles
A Twisted Psychological Thriller of Madness and Betrayal
When Reality Unravels, the Monsters You Create May Be More Real Than You Think…
What would you do if the world around you crumbled—and the villains you invented came to life?
Jake, once a rising star in the literary world, is now a man on the edge of madness. His mother’s death shattered him, grief clouding his every thought. Then came the rejections, each one a stab to his pride and sanity. But it was the ultimate betrayal that broke him—his trusted agent, Mark, twisted his words, stole his ideas, and took everything from him.
The pain of betrayal has unlocked something dark within Jake.
Now, the characters he created—once confined to the pages of his stories—are haunting his every waking moment. Victor Black, the cold-blooded villain. The Butcher, pure evil incarnate. Eliza Nightshade, deadly and seductive. The eerie Twins, laughing in the shadows. And Mr. Snuggles, the sarcastic talking cat, now a chilling figure of Jake's spiraling mind, stalking him with yellow eyes and a grin that promises terror.
But these aren’t just figments of his imagination anymore… They’re real. And they want something from him.
Jake isn’t just a psychological thriller—it’s a slow mental unraveling in story form, where the main character’s mind becomes the scariest setting of all.
After his mother’s death and a brutal betrayal by his agent, Jake, a once promising author, spirals into a suffocating world of paranoia and pain. But it’s not just his isolation that tightens the tension; it’s the characters he’s created, the ones he’s abandoned, and the ones who now seem intent on taking revenge. But is it real or all in Jake's head?
Victor Peter’s writing plays a clever, chilling trick: the book feels like it's collapsing in on itself the deeper you go. Reality blurs. Pages repeat. Jake’s creations—like the eerily poised Eliza Nightshade and the darkly comic Mr. Snuggles—bleed into the real world, or maybe Jake’s just losing his grip. Either way, the effect is pure thriller gold for readers who enjoy being thrown off balance.
There are moments where the repetition or introspection may feel excessive, but it mirrors Jake’s mental breakdown in a way that feels intentional rather than indulgent. The payoff? A deeply immersive experience where you’re not just reading about Jake’s descent—you’re dragged down with him.
If you’re drawn to stories with unreliable narrators where the line between author and character is dangerously thin, Jake is an unforgettable ride. It’s smart, sinister, and uncomfortably intimate.
My final verdict: 4.5 stars. One of the most unnerving thrillers I’ve read in a while—and that cat will haunt me forever.

This one is a hard one to review for me. It definitely needed the newly added novella for full impact. Without it, I probably would have rated it lower.
Overall, I was fairly conflicted about this book. On the one hand, the writing was good, but on the other hand, it was incredibly redundant, and I almost put it down a few times. HOWEVER, the redundancy makes a lot more sense with the added novella (although I still think the first book could have been shorter and just as effective). I would have liked a bit more connection between some of the characters at the end, as well as more explanation of Mark in the novella.

A review in two parts, the main story was really, really good. A very descriptive, and visceral descent into madness, Jake is a mess, a big mess and he is only getting worse. Frantic and full of desperation, a truly gripping tale that is well worth reading.
The bonus tale in this book started off well, giving more information to the main story, but after that info was revealed I felt it fell flat, it didn't grab me the more the story continued, sadly it didn't work for me.
I got a copy of this from BookSirens and this is my honest review
This book was a difficult one for me. There was a lot of repetition, which drives me nuts. Several times, I almost DNFd it. However, I was interested enough to want to find out how it ended. It never really seemed to, though. Whatever I was waiting to happen, just didn't.
Having said that, the book was well written. The tension never let up, even though it could have been condensed. The added novella was its saving grace! It provided some much needed background. It too was very well written.
I do like this author and well read more from him. This was just not my favorite from him.
A wild ride on a downward spiral from beginning to finish. A deep dive into the deep end of psychosis, violence and a world in the mind of a very disturbed individual. Hard to put down. The kind of reading that makes someone question sanity on extreme levels.
The warnings and tags for this one are not to be taken lightly. Everything matches up to a "T".

I really enjoyed this book I read it in roughly 24 hours. I know it was a cliffhanger book and now I'm excited to read the second or even third. I really liked the characters and how the author tied everything together. I will definitely read more from him. Thanks for allowing me to ARC this book. I recommend

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the different characters within Jake. I feel this was really cleverly written and made me feel all the feelings. It kept me on my toes and engrossed . I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the series .
Jake's an Author whose story blurs the lines between fantasy and reality as his haracters come to life. This definitely kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing what was going to happen next. I also enjoyed the short story Snuggles at the back of the book
Jake by Victor Peter is a mind-bending plunge into literary madness—and I was all in for it!
This isn’t your run-of-the-mill psychological thriller. It’s unhinged in the best way. A full-throttle descent into delusion, imagination, and the terrifying power of the mind. Grief, betrayal, and psychological collapse are tackled with unapologetic grit.
It’s imaginative, disturbing, and strangely fun. Each chapter drags you deeper into someone else’s psychosis—until you realize you’re in too deep to escape.
And the bonus novella? A wickedly satisfying twist that elevates the entire experience. It’s rare to find a companion piece that genuinely enhances the story, but this one does—and then some.
“Jake” by Victor Peter is a relatable and engaging look at identity, self-discovery, and mental health. The story follows Jake as he navigates personal challenges and societal pressures, diving deep into his struggles with anxiety and self-doubt. While the writing feels authentic and captures the ups and downs of Jake’s journey, it can feel a bit repetitive at times. However, the well-drawn characters add depth and make his experiences impactful. With a smooth flow and a mix of introspection and plot twists, “Jake” is a heartfelt read that resonates with anyone trying to find their way while dealing with mental health issues.
The bonus novella was a clever addition that offered a deeper glimpse into Jake’s story—and it genuinely made me feel sad for him, adding emotional weight to the overall narrative.
