Puzzle SF from 1943, and it shows. The author can imagine giant space cruisers travelling to the Magellanic Clouds, and weird aliens, but cannot possibly imagine that anyone in the story would be a woman or not smoke. As expected, the Competent Man outwits his opponents and solves the puzzle.

I loved Hal Clement as a teen, now find his stories interesting, cute, emotionally dead. Characters do things, things happen, one guy is the story’s version of Sherlock Holmes. Now I want read about people.

Defective book - half the pages are blank

The book is defective - at least half the pages are blank - very few times are two sequential pages available - the story might be interesting if you could read it
