Boston Hearts #4

Play the Game

Rate this book
Evan Rhodes is the bane of my existence.

She’s frustrating, competitive, irritatingly brilliant, and annoyingly beautiful – a fellow lawyer with a steely spine, sharp tongue, and an unmatched ability to get under my skin.

With two of us and one open partnership position available at the law firm where we work, we’re locked in a battle of wills with no resolution and no end in sight.

Until a single moment of late-night insanity fueled by not enough sleep, too much caffeine, a dark conference room, and a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city of Boston ties us to each other in a way that wasn’t in either of our life plans.

Thrown together by circumstance and chance, I start to see a different side of Evan – one she keeps hidden from the world. One I find impossible to resist.

With every early morning conversation, late night movie, and stolen moment away, I find myself falling in deep, until my one-time rival becomes the one person I can’t live without.

With a difficult past and scars that are not so easily healed, Evan is skeptical of words like love, family, and forever. But with my heart entirely lost to her and my family on my side, I’m determined to show her that forever is real, and that right from the start, she and I were always meant to be.

Samantha Brinn

Samantha Brinn (Sam to everyone who knows her) is an author of sweet, spicy, and swoony contemporary romance novels. A Pittsburgh girl currently living in the suburbs of NYC, Sam stole her first romance novel off of her mom’s bookshelf at age thirteen and has read pretty much nothing but romance ever since. Her Kindle is basically an extension of her hand at this point.

A lawyer by day and author by night, Sam can most often be found in bed with her laptop and writing desk late into the night, having the time of her life writing words and weaving stories and grinning at her characters’ hijinks.

Aside from being a reader and a writer, Sam is a lover of French fries, Reese’s peanut butter cups, and diet Pepsi, and much like her debut FMC, she rarely makes her coffee the same way twice. A mom of two, Sam cosplays as an organized human, but at her core, she’s mostly chaos and prefers it that way, and is loving every second of this wild indie author ride.

Some books are fun, some are emotional, and then there are the ones that make you feral-this one was all three.

It nails every trope-accidental pregnancy, workplace rivals, found family-and somehow makes them feel brand new. Evan and Cooper start off with razor-sharp banter and enough competitive tension to light up Boston. And that one late-night moment that changes everything? Fully unhinged behavior from me. They're electric, but it's written with so much emotional clarity that every shift between them feels earned.

What really got me was the way their edges soften without ever losing that fire. Cooper falls first and hard, loving Evan with this steady, determined patience she's never let herself hope for. Evan, with her titanium walls and terrifying brilliance, slowly learning to trust him was honestly beautiful. And Cooper's family embracing her instantly? Full found-family sobbing on my pillow energy. It's tender and warm and exactly what she needed.

The whole series has been incredible, but this book was such a perfect, fiery finish-packed with tension, spice, growth, and two people who make total sense together.

If you need me, l'll be over here still recovering from how much I loved these two.

When I read the blurb for this book, I expected a workplace rivalry before the accidental pregnancy happened. But the ONS was in the prologue, and so the pregnancy, along with how the MCs navigate it, has become the primary focus of the book. I was okay with it; pregnancy (accidental/surprise) has never been an issue for me. It's just that I was in the mood for an enemies/dislike-to-lovers story, so I wanted a bit more back-and-forth between them before they finally give in to the attraction. Anyway, it is what it is. 🤷🏽‍♀️

That said, I liked the story mostly because of Cooper. He's definitely one of the green-flag guys I've come across in my romance stories. The way this man stepped up in every way and made sure Evan was okay was so swoony. While I know that's the bare minimum because women do all the hard work in pregnancy, it's still something else to see a fictional man give his best whichever way and however possible. Oooh, I love it even more that he's pro-choice! He let Evan decide how to handle the pregnancy, and he never pushed her to do anything she wasn't comfortable with. Ugh, he's definitely 100% book boyfriend material. 🥹

As for Evan, I'm really not sure how to feel about her. I think this is the first time I've read a book where the FMC doesn't have strong feelings about her pregnancy. In probably 9 out of 10 books I've read, the FMCs are portrayed as thrilled when they learn they're pregnant. At first, they might feel a bit scared if the pregnancy was unexpected, but soon they start to feel happy and really embrace the idea of having a baby.

In this situation, Evan really took her time coming to terms with it, and I think this went on for almost the whole 9 months. And I know that her upbringing played a big role in why she felt like this. While I may understand some aspects of her thoughts, I'm going tbh and say that I can't fully relate to it. Then again, I'm child-free by choice, so I suppose I'll never really understand pregnancy in general.

I also believe it's important that people should refrain from telling others how they should deal with things. So yeah, Evan is entitled to her feelings, and readers should be understanding of that. Anyway, and this is me being honest, I'm really glad to see this different perspective because it gave me another insight I hadn't encountered before. 😊

When it comes to romance, I think this is where I start to feel frustrated with her. For most of the book, she kept pushing him away. Well, not really push, but she was on guard when she didn't have to be. I was seriously pulling my hair out in frustration! 😤 I mean, what does she mean she's still not sure about him? Coop has always been the best partner. He's totally committed, whereas she's always halfway out the door. And again we're supposed to be understanding because her parents really did a number on her. I can see where the hesitation about the pregnancy comes from, but I really have a hard time with the romance part. 😐

Just like her pregnancy, she took her time to acknowledge her feelings for him. And I just feel sorry for Cooper, because I feel like his efforts were in vain. But this guy's on a different level when it comes to understanding and patience. Not sure if he's a saint or what, but maybe close enough. Eventually Evan became honest with herself, but around that time I had already lost interest in their romance.

Anywaaay, this has become long, again, but overall I really enjoyed the family aspect and how they welcomed her into their fold. I appreciated how supportive Cooper's siblings and their partners were. His parents were great, too, especially his mom. I really liked the grandma, though ngl; her juju vibes weirded me out for a bit. Despite that, I really liked them all. But mostly what I loved the most was Coop's dedication to Evan and their little one.

And just like that, one of my favourite series literally ever is over. All the feels. Cooper and Evan were the best ending. I was OBSESSED! the chemistry, the secret iykyk, the found family. Every. Single. Thing. about this book was pure magic. I wanna live in this world - literally my dream - and never, ever, ever leave! Also, a moment for Milo and Chris & Rio. Standards set. This will forever be one of my favourite worlds. Brb, gonna go be emotional that it's over. Can't wait to see what's next.

This book has one of my go-to tropes: accidental pregnancy, and it was written so well.

It also has workplace romance, office rivals to lovers and so much more.

I love how the author wrote Evan and Cooper’s pregnancy journey and their love story. The way their feelings developed gradually was so realistic and heartfelt. The emotional depth made it feel like I was right there with them in every moment.

I also love Cooper’s family. The way they welcomed Evan so warmly and showered her with love was beautiful to read.

Evan herself is such a badass lawyer and she is truly amazing at what she does. It was refreshing to see a strong, capable heroine written this well.

This is a 5-star read for me and I absolutely recommend it.

Thanks to the author for this ARC.

✨️ Thank you to Samantha Brinn and Smuthood PR for this ARC for my honest review. I started reading this series last month & I have recommended this series to all my besties because it amazing, but let me say that Samantha truly saved the best for last. This book was absolutely freaking perfect. Even if you don't love an accidental pregnancy, you still need to read this book, because everyone needs to meet & fall in love with Evan & Cooper. Cooper is so perfect & supportive throughout the whole book & Evan is so real with her inner dialogue & hesitations. Let's not forget about that the chemistry & banter between these two from chapter 1 was incredible. & The found family in this series is top tier. I 1000% recommend this book!

I need more build up than them banging right from page one🙄.

Cooper is a textbook guy of perfect giving all the theoretically correct answers and responses. It felt unrealistic and the imaginary perfect guy. This goes for his family too, always giving the right textbook response.

Evan was mostly insufferable, very immature and there was no reason for all this uncertainty she had.

I thought this was going to be an office romance with lawyers going head-to-head for that promotion and along the way the surprise pregnancy comes along. Instead, pregnancy kicks in from page one, and then it is two people navigating pregnancy, a lot of throwing up, baby kicking and what not with zero office life and zero rivalry.

I'd rather it was rivalry and office romance first and pregnancy second. Instead it was mainly pregnancy, no rivalry and an almost non-existing office setting. They have a boss who sometimes makes a short appearance, colleagues are non-existent. Both FMC and MMC have no friends. MMC spends all his time with his family. FMC has a brother and his boyfriend around who make the briefest appearance. That's about it. This setting is just too small. And to top it all off, MMC didn't care much about the promotion and FMC did it for the wrong reasons and surely was not qualified.

Not sure in what country you can walk in in the middle of the night in the office in your pajamas. And that's supposed to be happening at a big law firm? I honestly thought that she was homeless. She should've been fired right from day one.

I also don't like books that are about writers writing books. It feels lame and lousy.

However, I did like the writing style. Although some chapters were really dragging with all the fangirling going on for eachother and all the couples being so clingy with eachother and everyone behaving like little girls. It came of as immature and very fictional. If it didn't mention Cooper's POV at the beginning of a chapter if could've easily been that of a girl. And do we really need two whole chapters for one smut scene? Next to that, you will read how much Cooper wants Evan in literally every chapter🙄.

I also liked that Cooper was not the typical manwhore, there was no comparing Evan with other women, crazy exes or jealous colleagues.

I think its not surpise to anyone that I absolutely loved this book and Samantha for written such an amazing series. This was accidental pregnancy done absolutely perfectly! Cooper and Evan's journey was so raw and realistic with the way their love grew developed.

Cooper. Oh you sweet, amazing man. I expected nothing less from the youngest Wyles brother, but he really set the bar SO high for all other men. He stepped up for Evan in every single way and he made me melt into a giant puddle by the things he did for her.

Evan, miss independent. She was written so beautifully and honest, especially with her mixed feelings about her journey into motherhood.

My heart breaks that this incredible series is over. My roman empire. The Wyles family will always have a special place in my heart. 🫶 I'm in 100% denial that this series is over.

I received a review copy and these are my thoughts:

And so the Boston hearts series comes to an end and what a great ending indeed! Cooper, the youngest of the Wyles brothers, finds himself unexpectedly becoming a father after his work rival - Evan, discovers she’s pregnant after a late night at the office turned into a “moment of insanity”. But what non of them expected was to find a love so magical that they even seemed to communicate mind-to-mind at times. They found a home in each other and for Evan, one in the Wyles family too.

Samantha’s stories have a great focus on found family and she does it so well. I’ve loved watching the sisterhood being built, with the addition of each female character and Evan was truly the last piece missing. Pam and Cece (Cooper’s mother and grandmother respectively), added warmth and understanding that comes from having life experience and wisdom. The way Evan was welcomed and embraced by the whole Wyles family was heartwarming, as was their unwavering support and love for the baby.

Through Evan, Samantha highlights the struggles women go through in male dominated worlds, like BigLaw. She was the most competent 7th year associate but that still wasn’t enough for her to be truly considered for the partner position. I threw a party when the words “pregnancy discrimination lawsuit” were thrown into the mix.

Evan was a strong, determined, highly competent and independent woman. But she was also lonely and desperate to be loved properly (though she would never admit it). Cooper was the biggest walking green flag of a man. He was kind and caring, intuitive (a little psychic like Cece) and had a few tricks up his sleeve. He also fell deep - “found my soulmate” kind of deep and had the perfect balance of letting Evan be her own person and stand up for herself, knowing just when to step in when she needed him to. His love and care may have been mostly quiet and done through small gestures but these spoke volumes and were what made Evan feel seen.

Evan was not a happy pregnant woman. It is expected that pregnant women be elated and have a wonderful time while expecting. Samantha brings forth the reality that, not all women like being pregnant and showcases the fears and insecurities many have towards parenthood.

The spice was spicin’! These two were very attuned in the intimacy department.

This might just be my favourite book in the series but I still have book 1 to go!

Two rival lawyers, a late night, a conference room, and a whole ton of unresolved sexual tension - that’s the initial setup for Play The Game.

From the very beginning, Cooper and Evan have got on each other’s nerves. It has only increased as they are competing for the same position. But a single night of passion on a conference room changes everything when Evan unexpectedly falls pregnant.

Struggling with parents who have always dismissed her efforts and blatant misogyny in the workplace, Evan is not prepared to become a mother. Morning sickness kicks her butt hard. She’s exhausted. The first ultrasound goes her a panic attack. But it turns out there’s one thing she can count on that she did not expect - Cooper.

Raised in a loving, supportive family, Cooper is a walking green flag. He makes Evan bagels (from scratch) and buys her cherry seltzers. He supports her decisions. But most importantly - at a time when so many options and decisions are taken away from Evan, he gives her choice.

This really beautiful story comes with a very personal note from the author about her own experience with pregnancy and feeling disconnected. While it is a romance, it is also a love story between Evan and her baby. It acknowledges that not all women glow with contentedness and feel an automatic sense of love and protection for their unborn child.

At the same time, the story is about Evan finding a home in Cooper’s crazy family, complete with a psychic grandmother. It is absolutely an open door (or conference room…or elevator…) romance that gets into the spicy stuff pretty quickly (and thoroughly).

This book deals with a pregnancy in detail (including birth) across the whole book. It also has very sexist workplace behaviour and parents who play favourites and diminish the needs of one child over the other.

It was a delightful, sweet read that finished off the series of stand alones beautifully. I have zero hesitation encouraging any fans of romcoms to read this book and the others in the series.

This book 😱 So sweet, so funny, so beautiful ❤️

The found family and friends group in this book is unmatched, the characters are so real, crazy, messy, funny and oh so lovable.

All of us need a Cooper Wyles in our life, he might just be the best of the Wyles brothers ❤️ and Evan is so strong, smart and real and she deserved to find this family 💕

Samantha Brinn did an incredible job with this book, I laughed, I cried and I kicked my feet and giggled with shear joy, I didn't want it to end

I highly recommend you read this book and I'm so grateful to Samantha and The Smuthood for this fabulous book

5⭐ Obsessed!

Absolutely 100% now and forever a reader of Samantha Brinn. Play the Game was my first read of hers and I am so happy I crossed paths with signups. I went in ready for a cozy enemies to lovers workplace romance and came out wiping my eyes and feeling so very seen. Evan & Cooper's story was everything I didn't know I need d and had top tier banter from all characters as a cherry on top!

My favorite things:

- The realistic and blunt nature in which pregnancy and motherhood were discussed. Not everyone has a perfect experience wrapped in a bow and that was depicted so well.

- I love that the quiet thoughts were said out loud.

- F the Patriarchy

- Swoon worthy MMC and strong independent FMC

- The greatest youngest child con ever!

Thank you Samantha Brinn & The Smuthood for this amazing ARC read. I will be going back to read book 1-3!!! Love me some Wyles family 💕

Sam does it again! She killed it with Play the Game! It was truly the perfect ending to one of my absolute favorite series! I’m so sad it’s over but I’m excited to see what Sam writes next!!

“𝙒𝙚'𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧, 𝙀𝙫. 𝙄 𝙠𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙬𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙗𝙚."

I’m obsessed with Cooper and Evan. Their chemistry was undeniable, the tension electric, and their workplace rivalry made for some truly great banter!

Cooper was totally obsessed with Evan and he didn’t just show it with words, his actions spoke just as loudly. I loved Evan and her growth throughout the story, especially as she struggled with pregnancy and the idea of becoming a mom. It was very relatable and I felt so seen in a lot of ways.

I know I say it with every review for the Boston Hearts series but the Wyles family is truly EVERYTHING. I love the bond they share, their group chats, the dinners, just everything about this family is the best! Definitely add this to your tbr. It’s a series that will stay with you!

Trope - enemies to lovers, ons, accidental pregnancy, workplace romance, hate to love, forced proximity, found family, he falls first, he cooks, nerdy lawyer MMC × badass lawyer FMC, cosy family vibes, strong independent female group, meddling by universe, no third-act breakup, rivals to lovers, romcom, steamy, HEA

The story begins with a steamy one-night stand between two associate lawyers who claim to hate each other's guts. Cooper Wyles is the most intuitive of the Wyles brothers. He is known for his caring nature and calm personality. Evan, on the other hand, is a determined, goal-oriented feminist FMC who aims to become a partner at their law firm.

Cooper, that man was already one of my favourites from the moment I saw his sensitive, compassionate, and loving side, but seeing his hot, competitive lawyer side made him a million times more attractive. Being the youngest child, he was another plus because I myself am the youngest, and I felt so seen with his character.

Their banter was top-notch, and I am not just talking about the workplace ones but even the non-workplace ones - like why was the whole interaction in the stadium so darn hot and funny?

I knew their chemistry was going to be sizzling and soothing, but I never imagined it to be so good. Watching them grow comfortable around each other was such a wholesome experience.

Cooper, also being pro-choice, was such a refreshing side to read. That man was a green flag walking around, like PREACH KING!! His secret hobby absolutely surprised me, but it also made me scream in excitement. He was the most empathetic, caring, loving, and smart sibling, and the way he expressed himself was just beautiful and perfect.

That chapter with the whole family interaction after discovering the pregnancy made me so emotional. Only the Wyles family has the power to make normal conversation so meaningful and heartwarming.

I liked how this book didn't just deal with the happy thoughts and feelings related to pregnancy but also showed the raw and real bits — especially for a first-time mum, who is at the peak of her career.

The family and sibling moments were an absolute gem; the conversations were easy, yet they never failed to touch a piece of your heart.

The spice was bang on; like OMFG these two were fire together, and the spice kept getting hotter and hotter with time. That elevator scene was so darn hot because OMFG what do you mean he swallowed his cum from her mouth, like AHHH.

Evan was such a badass, and watching her stand her ground and be the strong woman she was was so empowering.

Their confessions, moments, and bond — everything was wholesome to read.

Side characters and plot —
1. Wyles' family will always remain special to me; they were sweet, dedicated, hilarious, and had so much love within them that you could feel it through the words.
2. Sibling and wife moments were once again the best part of the book. The whole glitter prank had me dying with laughter.
3. Oh, I loved Pam — she literally was a queen, like wdym she Also, she raised some good men. All Wyles boys were so perfect and supportive - where are these men in real life?
4. The girls' group was my haven; it was peaceful, fun, and always full of activity. Each woman was unique, smart, independent, and so well-written.
5. I didn't think I could hate Evan's parents any more than I already do, but then they just went and upped themselves - oh, I wanted to jump inside the book and hit them both physically and with my words.
6. Chris was a good brother, and I loved how he stood up to their parents for Evan. Rio's character was interesting; he was funny, loving, and so sweet.
________________________________________

The baby scenes were adorable, especially those with the whole family.

The whole revelation moment was hilarious, I felt a part of me die laughing. No one could tell the Wyles men were in their thirties with the way they reacted.

I loved the epilogue, with a little glimpse of the family and their happy future generations. I need one more chapter with them T_T.

Definitely recommend the whole series.

Play the Game was the most perfect ending to the Boston Hearts series.

🥇 I came into this book knowing it would be meaningful to me. But not expecting to actually love it so much. Evan & Cooper took me totally by surprise.

📝Evan and Cooper have been work enemies for the last two years in the race to partnership in BigLaw. A steamy 2 AM moment of insanity turns into a surprise baby and together they navigate the status of their constant competition and what this means for them, their families and their professions.

💚 Workplace romance

💚 Enemies to lovers
👠 Accidental pregnancy
💚 Found family
🌶️🌶️🌶️.5

This book delivers well-rounded characters, a stellar supporting cast, and healthy perspective on complicated feelings in motherhood and relationships.

🤰Motherhood is as varied as it is hard. Evan's role as mom slowly seeps into her bones throughout the process of coming to terms with this pregnancy. It's a beautiful thing to watch, particularly as Cooper and his whole family accept Evan wherever she is and do not demand more or anything different.

🩷Sometimes romance can be easy love. And sometimes romance can be unexpected. And sometimes romance requires acceptance and work. Evan and Cooper make a beautiful life because they decide to. They make space for vulnerability and consciously choose to let each other in. They tend their feelings as they blossom into the sweetest, tenderest and most epic of love.

💭Therapist takeaway: Creating space to feel feelings without attachment is one of the most powerful gifts we can give ourselves and each other, especially during times of big change.

Cannot believe Boston Hearts is over and I am so much better for it and all of Sam's books. I was glad to receive this eARC.

Samantha Brinn always finds a way to steal my heart with her books. Truly.

This was such a fun read. The vibes of this book were everything.

Cooper and Evan were fantastic rivals to lovers. I love that they both are showing the grind of their professions and really highlighting how that can impact your life in different ways. The tension they’ve had in Boston Hearts (through Cooper talking about work) really set the tone for their dynamic and you could feel it coming off from the page. And when they came together, Cooper was right, it was going to be like that every time. It was perfect kicking your feet, so happy for them. Their growth as a couple and overcoming the challenges were so wholesome and lovely to read.

The plot of this book also felt very impactful because though the pregnancy was central, it also showed how easy it is to lose yourself and how to keep aspects to yourself. I fully related to this and it really reminded me of how I felt when I was pregnant. The outside influences and dynamics also felt so relatable that I found this book so hopeful and lovely, that you couldn’t help, but keep reading.

Samantha Brinn always makes magic and I will always read what she writes ❤️ what a perfect end to an amazing series.

I truly believe that there will never be a book that Samantha Brinn writes that I would devour and love!

I had the honor to receive an eARC of this book and I have ZERO NOTES.

With that being said, DADDY COOPER and his slutty glasses might very well be my favorite Wyles brother. 🤫🤫 don’t tell the others. 😂

Evan was the badass FMC that I just knew she would be. Sam is so good at writing powerful women! Evan felt like she always had something to prove when really all she needed was to find her people and be loved! The Wyles family knows how to do just that, and welcomed her with open arms when she accidentally gets pregnant by her work rival Cooper Wyles.

Cooper follows his brother’s examples and loves big and fast and fierce giving Evan that support she always longed for.

I’m so sad this was the conclusion of this series! I really fell in love and was immersed into this world and it’s sad to leave it. I just know whatever comes next will be amazing! 😍

I’m so sad this series is over! This is one I looked forward to with each book, and Samantha Brinn does not disappoint with this finale. Cooper's story has been teased, but I didn't expect him to be such a perfect MMC. This enemies-to-lovers workplace romance with an accidental pregnancy worked so, so well!

Cooper and Evan are a perfect match. Evan is such a fierce FMC who might have a sharp tongue, but her vulnerability is really where her character shines. I love the banter, the chemistry, the relatability - really everything about this story! There is so much honest dialogue, especially when it comes to Evan's pregnancy. We also get epic text exchanges, Cooper’s long con on his family (IYKYK), and the found family aspect is once again unmatched. This one got me so emotional (tears & all).

This is one of my favorite series (can we get this on audio??? I'd do a reread in a heartbeat!) - and while I am so sad it's over, it just gets me excited to see what Sam writes next!

Y’all, I cannot believe this series has come to an end. Cooper’s book has been a long time coming and what a way to end the series. Evan and Cooper are workplace rivals however, one late night at the office turns into a steamy, unforgettable time. And these two together? They are HOT. Little did they know how much that one time would change the course of their lives.

We got to see (or should I say hear?) about Cooper’s rivalry with Evan in previous books, so I was beyond excited to finally be able to witness the banter between these two! Y’all, the banter was so good and the tension?! Good lord did I love it. After their hookup, Cooper falls first and falls hard. And when he finds out that Evan is pregnant? Oh this man is so supportive of her and will do anything to make sure she is taken care of.

Evan is a strong, independent, badass lawyer and I love her so much. She’s always kept to herself and has walls up to protect her heart, but then there’s Cooper. Sweet, caring and so patient with earning her trust. In time, he starts to break down those walls and seeing her start to trust him and fall in love was so special. I also can’t forget the Wyles family and how they fully accept and embrace Evan into their family without a second thought. Samantha has such a way with writing found family and the love Evan finds with them was absolutely beautiful.

I am so sad to say goodbye to these characters, but Cooper and Evan’s story was a perfect ending. I cannot wait to see what Samantha has in store for us in the future!

Thank you so much to Samantha and her team for the arc💕

Oh I loved every second of this. I typically hate the surprise pregnancy trope, but it was done superbly here. Cooper is the ultimate book boyfriend and you could certainly tell acts of service were his love language 😭😭 I loved the element of work nemeses to lovers and I ADORED the FMC and her journey through motherhood. It warmed my heart to see her grow into herself and be welcomed into such a warm, loving family 🥹 Cooper, the man that you are 😩😩😩😩

Anyways, I guess I now have to read the rest of the series since I liked all the other couples in this book ☺️

I knew from Yours to Lose that I was a Cooper girl and Sam did not disappoint in delivering exactly what I was hoping for. But what surprised me the most was how sudden and fiercely I became an Evan girl.

Sam writes strong, powerful women you immediately connect with, so that you, the reader, feel like you’re part of the girl group. I just love these ladies and the Wyles men they have fallen in love with.

I’m not normally an accidental pregnancy reader, but this hit the mark in the best way. From Evan’s initial reluctance about even wanting to be a mom, to the way Cooper was wholeheartedly on her side and pro choice is so important especially in today’s climate.

And, of course, in typical Sam Brinn fashion, the spice is *chef’s kiss*

I adore Sam and her writing and characters and can’t wait for what comes next.

It wasn’t enemies to lovers, it was I hate that I want you. I love to fight with you.
I felt myself connecting and sympathizing every step of the story. Having to fight for your space in a stereotypical male dominated world by doing double what everyone else does and not getting to be your true self throughout it, yeah. I think many women will be able to relate to Evan’s life unfortunately. The clothes part took me out. “I am well acquainted with the concept of clawing my way to the top while less qualified men stroll in there like it’s a walk in the fucking park. I don’t need you to remind me about the concept of fairness.”
Coop is the sweetest. I loved that he followed his father’s advice and took care of the woman every step of the way. He never waned. He couldn’t help with the growing and body changes, so he helped the woman herself.
I initially didn’t like Cooper “Coop” Wyles brothers. They took overprotectiveness a step two far the first time they met Evan. It was harsh. It took a lot for me to warm up to them after that. Their wives are what inevitably thawed my heart to them.
I was instantly obsessed with Pam and psychic granny Cece though! The way Pam accepts all of her daughter in laws, aimply based on the fact that they love her son, brought literally tears to my eyes. That’s a pure mothers love to accept and love other because their loved ones do. I loved how she could rule with fear if needed to though. She raised those boys right and she was not gonna let them stray from the path even once on her watch! She has a way with healthy fear. “…if you’re mine, that means you belong to the rest of my family too.”
I hope I get to be as intuitive and all knowing as Cece one day. She just knew everything. She passed some of that along her lineage, and I can’t wait to see what chaos the next generation causes with those clairvoyant gifts. “Every woman is a little bit witchy. That’s why all the men are so afraid of us.”
I loved that Coop and his family didn’t look down on romance literature. They embraced it. The med read just as much as the women. They had no problem reading something hot and then grabbing their partner to recreate it with. It was nice to see that enthusiasm portrayed by male characters. It was celebrated and even requested by them.
I really appreciated the raw honesty and openness by the author in the foreword. Every woman’s journey and body is different. I’m glad that was acknowledged. I think Evan’s doctor further reiterated that point. I like that no one made her feel dumb for being human and working out her feelings. I valued how honest Evan was about what she was feeling and thinking throughout her journey. She verbalized how unsure and confused she was. Even if she don’t know the answer or response, she talked it out to be able to communicate that she didn’t know how to answer. “…we live in a patriarchal society that tells women good moms don’t get to feel any emotion that isn’t happiness, and that’s just bullshit.”
Where is my invitation to Midnight Breakfast?!
I need Evan’s sweatshirt collection! Each one packed a bigger punch than the last. How can I join the Smart Girl Smut Sisters?! Who do I need to bribe to get my hands on that bagel recipe too???
Evan’s parents are too pushy and super sexist. I was as mad as she was hurt by them. It’s definitely not how family should be. Evangeline “Evan” Rhodes brother was her only true family. He always showed up for her no matter what.
This is a new to me author, and I loved discovering them! I haven’t read any of the rest of the books, and I didn’t miss a beat. Flawless stand-alone. It was the couples world. I didn’t need the backstory on all the brothers or feel like I missed anything. I was in the main characters story. It felt like the timeline in the world kept moving forward just like reality. It truly was their own story.

Ever since reading the epilogue in Just My Type by Samantha Brinn, I was eagerly and excitedly waiting for Cooper and Evan’s book to come out — and it was worth the wait.

In the first chapter, or you can say the prologue itself, we can see the deep hatred that they both have for each other. They literally just have to get it out of their system in the prologue, and it was so damn fiery and so damn passionate that I was literally swooning.

The jibing and the banter were top-notch. I love it when the main characters use their last names to talk to each other or flirt with each other, and it was so damn good seeing Cooper calling Evan “Rhodes” throughout the book — I was melting.

There’s something about the found family trope that gets me every time — the chaotic energy, the warmth, and basically that part where a character deprived of love from their own family is embraced by the other’s family and showered with all the love they’ve been missing. This book definitely had that trope, and those scenes made me cry.

There are, however, some things that I unfortunately didn’t like in the book — mainly the overly long dialogues, or you could say rants. I’m okay with ranting. I’m okay with brain-dump dialogues. I’m okay with mindless babbling. I’m okay with characters talking their hearts out. But some of those paragraphs were so long that I had to pause, break the dialogue into two or three parts, just to comprehend what the character was even talking about. It was that long. Maybe adding some dividers or breaks to split those big chunks of dialogue would have helped.

Then there’s another point — almost 20–25% of the book was filled with sex scenes. I usually don’t have a problem with smut, but I’m the kind of reader who doesn’t like too much of it. I like it balanced. So, that was the point where I had to skim through a few pages.

Then comes another part — the characters keep talking about hating each other, but we rarely see those scenes of hate except at the beginning. There were a few good ones before the pregnancy reveal, and I loved those parts. I thought we’d see more of their enemies-to-lovers dynamic instead of the in-between stage because I absolutely love the banter, the jibes, and the tension they had between them.

There was also some unresolved tension in the book — for example, Cooper’s dilemma about his career. He obviously didn’t like being a lawyer in that firm, but we never really got to know what happened next. Then there was the unresolved tension between Evan and her parents. I really wanted a full reunion or a confrontation scene where Evan would just let everything out. That would’ve been perfect.

Now, enough about the drawbacks and the things I didn’t like. Because honestly, this was definitely one of the funniest books I’ve read.

Cooper — oh my god — that cooking revelation scene had me laughing so hard I couldn’t keep the tears out of my eyes. I was laughing like a maniac.

I also read the author’s note before starting the book, and it was so heartfelt that I literally had tears in my eyes. It was beautifully penned. And the way we could see the author’s story reflected through Evan’s — it was just so touching.

Normally, in accidental pregnancy tropes, we see the FMC being completely fine after a while, coming to terms with it easily within a few weeks. But Evan’s perspective was so real, so raw. It showed that there’s so much more to that experience, and it was written beautifully. The emotions we feel through Evan’s POV are genuine and powerful.

Oh, and last but not least — Cece’s psychic powers! Oh my god, please give me those psychic powers.

And the whole family trope? It was so sweet, so adorable, so chaotic yet loving that I can’t even bring myself to say goodbye to them. I just can’t believe that this amazing series has come to an end.

I literally love the Wyles family — their chaos, their warmth, their love. I’m going to miss them so much.

👠 Enemies to Lovers
🍼 Found Family
👠 Workplace Romance
🍼 Accidental Pregnancy
👠 One Night Stand
🍼 He Falls First and Hard
👠 No Third Act Breakup
🍼 Slutty Glasses and a Secret Talent

When workplace enemies to lovers becomes an accidental pregnancy trope, I’m hesitant but intrigued. I wasn’t sure how I would feel going in after reading a slew of dark romance ARCs, but seeing the dedication and then author’s note, I was won over and here for the whole ride.

And I’m so glad I was. I really appreciate the honest take on motherhood and society and how we are told how to think and feel, what to say and not to say, how we should or shouldn’t do something, and yet nothing we feel, say, do, or think is ever right or good enough. We’re handed a tiny human, a squirt bottle, and diapers for us and them and sent on our merry way with zero time to process literally anything. Strong as mother indeed.

Which brings me to Evan Rhodes, who is a seventh-year associate at a law firm where she has to work five times as hard as any man—and deal with a misogynistic boss—as she competes against her coworkers for the coveted senior partner position. Getting pregnant was not in her plan.

Cooper Wyles is the coworker she loves to hate, the target of her a lot of her ire, and a man she couldn’t resist one late night at the office.

A one night stand turns into a whoops baby and they both have to navigate impending parenthood, work problems, and learning each other while not losing themselves.

The quality of writing blew me away because their banter is top-notch, the Wyles Family is on my short-list of favourite found families—Cece and Pam, especially, are amazing—and the realities of what women go through to create life made this story. Dirty-talking, deliciously hot sex with a man in slutty little glasses and grey sweatpants who can cook and go full caretaker mode definitely made this so much better.

I really liked that the pregnancy spanned the whole book and wasn’t just thrown into the epilogue because Cooper is the gold standard for how a person should treat their pregnant partner and people need that reminder. He was the perfect book boyfriend and soon-to-be dad. Evan was my kind of girl—strong, mouthy, hates being vulnerable. I could relate to her relationship with her parents and how difficult it can be to accept unconditional love and support from others who you’ve been taught those are weaknesses. (Also, if my son had been a daughter, her name was actually going to be Evangeline, called Evan, so I was hooked from the jump)

Lord, I didn’t know I was going to swoon so hard, or cry, or laugh, or fall in love with these two and this crazy, amazing family. I’d give this way more stars if I could! This was my first Samantha Brinn and it definitely isn’t my last. Play the Game is the fourth and final book in the Boston Hearts series and can be read as a standalone, but I will absolutely be going back to read books 1-3—and you should, too, if you haven’t already.

Thank you to the author and The Smuthood for the ARC.

“If this is your villain origin story, let me be a part of it, Ev. We’ll be bad guys together because it turns out that I don’t hate you at all.”

✔️enemies to lovers
✔️workplace romance
✔️accidental pregnancy
✔️one night stand
✔️he falls first & hard
✔️found family
✔️no 3rd act breakup

This book marks the end of the Boston Hearts series, and it is bittersweet because Cooper (MMC) and Evan (FMC)’s story is so special and all of the Wyles brothers got their happily ever afters, but now it is over. If you love an enemies to lovers where they are enemies longer than they are lovers, this one probably won’t be for you. They have a history, they been enemies for a couple of years (and we heard about that rivalry in previous books in the series), but by the time the main timeline of this book starts (when Evan finds out she is pregnant) they are already softening toward each other and realize fairly quickly that they never actually hated each other. This book starts with a bang, literally, in the prologue — the chemistry between these two is off the charts and of course, one time/night will never be enough.

Watching Evan find her people, her found family, is really special. She doesn’t need anyone, but having a mom figure like Pam Wyles (Cooper’s mom) in her life and being surrounded by other strong women (her future sister-in-laws) brings her a feeling of peace and belonging that she didn’t know she needed. Her brother is amazing but she doesn’t have great parents, and the idea of becoming a mom is complex for her, so when she finds out she’s pregnant (with her enemy’s baby) it’s an understatement to say that she isn’t enthused by the situation. I know that not everyone loves the accidental pregnancy trope, but it is done so well here. It isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, and she isn’t in love with the baby and Cooper straight out the gate. Her relationship with Cooper is a slow burn, even though the spice is not. She needs time to process and that. is. okay.

Cooper is the gold standard for how someone should take care of their partner during pregnancy. He is incredibly patient with her and he treats her like a human being, not an incubator. He tells her that he’s got her and he will take care of her, and he means it. I love that there is emphasis placed on the fact that he fell in love with her because it is her, not because she is the mother of his baby. A couple of other favorite things — they both have secret hobbies that they only share with each other (and the eventual reveals to his family are perfect), and her pet axolotls. Overall this was the perfect way for this series to end (oh my gosh that epilogue…) and I am so excited for whatever Sam decides to write next.

"You’re a part of me, Ev. You’re in every bone, every cell, baked into my goddamned DNA, and I couldn’t get you out if I tried. It’s you for me. You’re the only one. It’s always been you.
I love you."

I was lucky to receive an ARC of Samantha Brinn's newest book, Play the Game (the final book in The Boston Hearts Series). It follows the story of Cooper and Evan.

I've not so patiently been waiting to read Cooper's story ever since he caught my attention in Not Your Girl. I have been dying to learn more about the work rivalry between him and Evan.

I never thought I would have a favourite Wyles brother, but Cooper was it for me! He gave all his brothers a real run for their money in securing the top spot!

I'm not sure what Samantha put in this book, but I could not put it down! She had me kicking my feet, smiling ear to ear, and laughing as I swooned over Cooper and Evan.

Cooper is everything you could want in a book boyfriend and more! Seeing him take the time to learn about Evan and truly see her beyond what she shows the world is everything. He has the patience of a saint and a heart of gold, and the way he cares for and looks after her melted my heart. I love how he allows her to be her authentic self, supports her wholeheartedly, and stands by her side when others try to make her doubt her worth and feel like she isn’t enough. Let’s not forget how all the little things he would do for her made me fall in love with him. Where can I get myself a man like Cooper?

Evan was everything! She is such a strong, independent, badass woman, just like I knew she would be. She was written so beautifully and is such an honest and relatable FMC. Evan felt like she always had something to prove when really what she needed was to find her people and be loved unconditionally, supported, and accepted for who she is. I loved seeing her be real and vulnerable, as well as her growth throughout the book. Watching her be seen and loved by Cooper throughout everything was complete perfection.

The banter and tension between them is top-tier! I also liked how they pushed each other's buttons and knew how to rile each other up.

I loved everything about their story and thought they were perfect together. They balance each other out beautifully.

There is so much that I want to say, but I don't want to give anything away or ruin Cooper and Evan's story because you need to read and experience it yourself.

I adored the found family aspect of the book. Seeing Jordan, Jo, Elliot, Amelia, Noah, Hannah, Pam, Rob, and Cece again makes me so happy.

I love the Wyles family; they are some of the most supportive people, and everyone deserves to have someone like them in their lives. The playful banter and group chats among all of them are truly the best!

It is bittersweet knowing this is the end of The Boston Hearts Series, but I am excited to see what Samantha comes out with next!

Thank you so much to Samantha Brinn for this ARC 💚

Sam did it again. And at this point, I don’t even know why I’m surprised — I’ll read anything she writes, no questions asked. Every single book she puts out hits right in the heart, but this one… this one was something special.

This series as a whole ? Pure magic. The found family, the friendships, the inside jokes, the banter — it’s everything I love about reading. These characters feel real. They’re messy, complex, hilarious, and lovable, and I genuinely want to be best friends with every single one of them. The dynamic they share is unmatched, and saying goodbye to this series honestly feels like the end of an era. 🥹

Now let’s talk about Cooper Wyles.
The man. The myth. The moment. 😮‍💨
Did he just claim the top Wyles brother spot ? Yeah, I think he did. (And considering how elite those men are, that’s not an easy title to steal 👀).

And Evan Rhodes ? My absolute queen. She’s strong, smart, independent, and so unapologetically herself. I love how Sam wrote her — she’s ambitious and tough, but also real and vulnerable. She’s the kind of woman you root for on every single page.

Cooper and Evan start as workplace rivals — constantly clashing, constantly testing each other — and you can feel the tension building from the start. Then one night changes everything, and suddenly Evan’s facing a situation she never expected. Yep… accidental pregnancy, my favorite trope 🍼

But what made this story so beautiful was how real it felt. Cooper steps up for Evan in every way — patient, kind, steady, and supportive. He never oversteps, he never pressures. He’s just there. Constantly. And watching that quiet strength, that unconditional love, was honestly everything.

Their relationship builds so naturally — from enemies to partners, from confusion to connection, from fear to love. The banter, the slow burn, the tension — all of it was perfection. And when they finally give in ? Pure magic. ✨
This book isn’t just about love or romance — it’s about finding yourself again. It’s about how easy it is to lose parts of who you are when life changes unexpectedly, and how beautiful it is when someone helps you remember. That part hit me so hard. It reminded me of how much strength it takes to let yourself be loved while still holding on to who you are.

Sam managed to make it emotional, funny, hopeful, and so full of heart all at once. I laughed, I teared up, I kicked my feet, and I never wanted it to end. This story felt like home — the perfect balance of chaos, comfort, and love.

The perfect finale to a series that means so much to me. I’m not ready to let these characters go, but I cannot wait to see what Sam brings us next. 💙

I knew from book one I was going to love Cooper. I had no idea just how much I was going to fall in love with him. I was not ready for how much Cooper would make Evan feel loved. He would do anything for her.
- Hi, my name is Cooper Wyles, and it makes my dick hard when the woman carrying my child is mean to me. There’s probably something wrong with me. I’m fine with that.

Samantha is never scared to talk about real life feelings that people are normally scared to talk about. Example below.
For the moms:
Enthusiastic, reluctant, indifferent, fell in love right away, took a while to fall in love, pregnancy lovers, pregnancy haters, formula feeders, breast feeders, swaddlers, never learned how to wrap that fucking swaddle, sleep trainers, absolutely no sleep training, working moms, stay at moms, work from home moms, I love my kids all the time, I would cut off a limb for five minutes of peace with none of those little shits touching me or asking for snacks. Motherhood is impossible and there are no right ways. You’re doing amazing.

Cooper never made Evan feel like her feelings where wrong. Women are told you have to feel this way and if you don’t then you will not be a good mom. When you come from the family like Evan’s you cannot be expected to express your feelings. It was wonderful how Cooper was able to be her safe place and knew her better than she knew herself sometimes. These two were able to express themselves in a very respectable way. Cooper knew when Evan had too much “feelings talk” and was able to change the subject without pushing. He let her come around naturally and it was amazing too read.

The whole family was so welcoming to Evan. Seeing her start to except them as family had my heart. You could feel her opening up and becoming herself. Something she was never able to do. It was beautiful to see. Pam Wyles what can you say about her except she is the mom we all want to be like. She express the same feelings about pregnancy that Evan was experiencing.

I cannot express how amazing this book is. I have loved them all for different reasons but this one has my entire heart.

Thank you Samantha Brinn & The Smuthood for this beautiful ARC read. The above is my honest thoughts.

📖 Play the Game by Samantha Brinn

“Just be here with me, Evan. Because I think as long as we’re together, we can do anything.”

I’m hoesntly crying all over again while writing this review. I am BEYOND sad to say goodbye to these characters. When I tell you that they felt like family to me, I mean it. Samantha Brinn has a beautiful gift of bringing her characters to life in such a special way.

This spinoff series started off on an emotional note and it just kept it going through each story. I have laughed more and cried more in this series than nearly any other. The found family aspect and the way that the Wyles family stole my heart is next level perfect. The jokes, the pranks, the midnight breakfasts and the touching life advice, this family has it all!

Cooper’s book has been a long time coming and it was amazing! His workplace romance was built off of tension that literally exploded into a HOT one night stand.

Evan has made so many sacrifices to survive and thrive in a male dominated career as a corporate big-law lawyer. She is determined to make a name for herself so a surprise pregnancy was not on her bingo card.

“When Cooper smiles, it lights up his whole face, and I think that it would never be dark again as long as Cooper Wyles is there to smile at me.”

Cooper was such a wonderful MMC! He is described as the best of all the Wyles brother’s and it’s because he is the perfect combination of everything we loved in his brothers. He steps up and makes it his life’a mission to make Evan’s life easier during her pregnancy. This man was just an absolute GEM of a book daddddddy!

The chemistry between them was so palpable. The way they were together was delightfully SPICY.

“You’re amazing. So beautiful. So perfect. And mine. All mine.”

THE ENDING HAD ME BAWLING. I just love these characters so much and I’m devastated to say goodbye, but that’s how you know this series is worth all the love! I can’t recommend it enough, please go check it out!

“Say the words. Tell me you’re mine, because I’m yours, Rhodes.“

For the best reading experience, you can start with Because of You! (Or read in whatever order but this will give you the most emotional impact.)

It’s time friends, the Wyles are waiting for you. One. Last. Time.
