To me the writing seemed clunky and a little awkward, particularly the sentence structure. Could this be an attempt to sound more authentic and medieval? I'm not sure.

Granted, Spanish is not my native language, but I've read other books that are advertised as being at a similar level but were more enjoyable to read.

I have always wanted to read about don Quijote in Spanish. I'm glad that I found this book because the words were easier to read than the classic version of Don Quijote. It also was the length of a novel. It is a very funny book.
