For Spider, being a vampire is bad enough, but he's also cursed with the need to help others. Especially when they are young, attractive, and female. So when Parker Cole goes on a cruise to aid her recovery from demonic possession, Spider goes along to keep an eye on her. It doesn't take long before Parker comes across a small-time thief who has swiped some big-time trouble - a mummified finger that holds mysterious black magic. Worse, the finger's owner is Demande Jemarcus, a crime lord and witch doctor who will do anything in his power to get it back. And his power includes the ability to turn a shipload of passengers into zombies...
J.R. Rain is the author of 110 novels and counting. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest, where he's hard at work on his next novel... and fighting off sparkly vampires.
I genuinely like J.R. Rain novels. Although this one skates on the verge of slapstick, horror, comedy, I won't trash it. Spider Web rides on the edge of silliness and staid. Most times, I was experiencing the tickle of giggles just as something sober suddenly transpired, very much like jump-scares in horror movies: the audience is looking in one direction just before a cat jumps onto the protagonist from an alternate direction.
In Spider Web (the second book of the Spider series) there's a vampire protagonist, the titular character Spider, on a cruise ship with his best female friend, Parker Cole, who has been demon possessed. They work together to solve the mystery of a theft, which turns into a murder mystery when it is discovered that a mummified, magical finger was the item stolen and that Demande Jemarcus is not just a crime lord, but a witch doctor, as well.
Of course, with such disparate characters in the mix, the conflict is enhanced due to the numerous humans aboard the ship which often serve as collateral damage to the supernatural, paranormal, power struggles that create the action and drama for this novel.
The story is propelled at a quick pace, maybe too quick. There's really not a tremendous amount of characterization, but there appears to be enough. Clearly, I'm a little conflicted so I'm calling this one right down the middle. I usually prefer a denser story, but it is a quick Halloween read #7 for 2023.
This was a very entertaining book. I had trouble putting it down. While Bad Blood had Demons, this had an evil witch doctor and zombies. The interaction between Spider and Parker was hilarious, while they are trying to save a cruise ship full of people from become zombies. I had trouble putting it down because I wanted to see how they got out of their current predicament. They no sooner got out of one situation and then they were right back into another situation. There were no slow parts of this story, can't wait for the next one.
Book 1 of Spider Web was readable but started out a bit slow. When this happens, with any book started, you keep reading in hopes that by the end, the book will get better. Well...it does but man what a twist of events. Book 2 was pretty much the same. It started out slow but gradually got better as it continued on. As for the characters, the vampire isn’t your ordinary blood sucker and a bit passive when it comes to the not-so-fair damsel. The story line was better and the location of events (cruise ship) close quarters is a disaster in waiting. In all the book is entertaining but need a more bad-boy vamp.
Another will written vampire fantasy world 🌎 haunting horror adventure thriller short story by J. R. Rain ☔ and Scott Nickolson about a vampire and Parker on a cruise vacation out of Tampa, Florida. The cruise turns into a horror vacation when demons, zombies, and other things turn up. Spider and Parker win out in the end but it is a close call. I would recommend this novella and authors to readers of fantasy haunting horror ghost 👻 novellas, novels, and books 📚, Enjoy the adventure of reading or listening to Alexa as I do. 2022 😈👒🎒⚓
Too "adult" for a children's book, but too immature for an adult book. More like a disjointed, racy children's book - Percy Jackson with some illogic and eros thrown in?
I love these authors and I love this series. These are quick-read books, great books for a lazy day read, easily read in an afternoon. Vampires, zombies, voodoo- what's not to love? Spider is a centuries old vampire who has done some really bad stuff in his past, and now he is trying to make up for it by helping people when he can. On a vacation cruise with his new girlfriend/former possessed girl-fiend, Parker, they run across a man who has some bad mojo put on him after stealing a mummified finger. Now he is in big trouble and Spider and Parker are going to help him out of it, if they can survive it themselves. Sounds like a horror book but with these two authors, if you know their writing, there is plenty of witt and fun involved with the supernatural storyline as it plays out. Always fun, entertaining and a great ride, gotta love Spider and (yes, I've read it already) the next and final book is just as good. Love Spider!
OK, I must say 1st that I hate zombies & I don't like horror. However, I love J.R. Rain & got a free copy for my honest review. I knew this book was about zombies & definitely horror-ish. Yet, I really enjoyed it immensely. It was a totally fun ride.
I liked this book MUCH more than the 1st in this series (demons turn me off worse than this version of zombies). Although this book had some seriously gross stuff & many very tense moments, it had wit, intelligence & humor throughout. Spider was a trip. He was very easy to love & to root for. I couldn't wait to see what happened next in this quick, easy to read book. Enjoy this wild ride. I highly recommend it.
It took me a while to finish this one because my Kindle was out of commission but I picked up right where I left off. The story was engaging and I found myself really liking the characters. It could have been a little creepier but other than that I loved the book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who just plain likes a good read.
This book was the second in the trilogy and it was okay just more of a vampire wanting to help out people which leads him into trouble. This is a young adult series so its pretty mild in content but still good for a fast easy read.
