Een hartverwarmend verhaal over liefde, vriendschap en verbondenheid van bestsellerauteur Jessica Redland
Illustrator Autumn Laine is haar creativiteit kwijt.
I was born in Teesside but now live in Scarborough on the stunning North Yorkshire Coast. My home inspired the creation of the fictional seaside town of Whitsborough Bay where I set many of my books although the Hedgehog Hollow series takes readers to a gorgeous new countryside setting in the Yorkshire Wolds.
I live with my husband, our teenage daughter and sprocker spaniel, Ella. I'm a self-confessed stationery addict with a ridiculously large collection of notepads who loves chocolate (although it doesn't love me), hedgehogs, 80s music, collectible teddy bears and lighthouses.
Other than a career detour into retail to set up and run my own teddy bear shop (the inspiration for novel Bear With Me), I've always worked in HR, specialising in resourcing, coaching and L&D. Writing always had to take a back seat to the day job until June 2020 when I left the world of HR to become a full-time author. I'm so very grateful to anyone who has bought or borrowed my books in whatever format, helping me fulfil a long-held dream of writing full-time. I still can't believe I get to spend every day chatting to my fictional friends and making stuff up.
EXCERPT: 'I wish this wasn't goodbye,' I said, stroking his hand. 'I wish I could keep you forever but Grandma needs you now, doesn't she? She's been waiting for you so patiently, and it's time I let you go so you can be together again.' I drew his hand to my lips and gently kissed it. 'I've said it before and you've brushed it off, so I'm going to say it again. Thank you for everything you've done for me. I've learned so much from you and Grandma and I'm so grateful.' I bit my lip, my stomach churning. I needed to say it while I still had the chance. 'And thank you for keeping my secret. You promised you would and you kept that promise and I'm so grateful. So I'm going to make a promise to you. Even though I'm going to miss you every day, I will be fine. You don't need to worry about me anymore.'
ABOUT 'THE START OF SOMETHING WONDERFUL': Autumn Laine has lost her creative sparkle. After losing her grandad and her job as an illustrator in quick succession, she is at a crossroads in life and needs a break. Spending time with her parents in Paris, even in the artistic community of Montmartre, doesn't appear to be the answer. So when her penpal, Rosie, invites her to stay in the Lake District, Autumn jumps at the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of Paris. After all, where better to re-discover her creativity than the place which inspired her heroine, Beatrix Potter? Arriving at the picturesque lakeside village of Willowdale, Autumn is swept up by the beauty and magic of the stunning landscape. Welcomed into the community with open arms, she slowly starts to feel like herself again as her creative instincts re-ignite. But when she meets Dane, who has escaped to the Lakes for his own reasons, will Autumn's walls come down to let someone in again after so long? Or will the secrets of her past continue to hold her back? A new beginning is a daunting prospect, but could it be the start of something wonderful too..?
MY THOUGHTS: A sweet and tender romance; a story of love and lost loves; friendship, and being open to other options.
We never forget our first love, do we? But in Autumn's case she has allowed her longing for her first love to take over her life. No-one else has had a chance . . . until she is knocked off her feet (literally) by Dane. They say that every cloud has a silver lining and that is definitely true in Autumn's case - he's definitely worth a bruise or two!
The Start of Something Wonderful is sweet, tender and funny. I loved the penpal connection between Autumn and Rosie and was impressed that they had been writing to each other for twenty-four years! I remember our teacher somewhere around Year 6 doing something similar, but I'm sure we only exchanged one or two letters before the novelty wore off. And I couldn't believe that they had never met up during that time, especially when they both live (mostly) in the same country.
I liked the way Autumn grew in confidence as the story progressed, and the way she brings out the best in Dane, giving him more much needed confidence in his own abilities.
I also loved the setting. It sounds magnificent and fitted the storyline perfectly.
The only thing I didn't relate to is the very tight time frame in which Autumn and Dane's relationship develops. It seemed far too fast to me, and I would have liked it to have been eked out a little more.
This series has so much potential and I have possible storylines zinging around in my head. I can't wait to read more.

DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Boldwood Books via NetGalley for providing a digital ARC of The Start of Something Wonderful by Jessica Redland for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions.
Autumn Laine is at a crossroads in her life. Since the death of her beloved grandfather, she lost her job as an illustrator and after spending time with her parents in Montmartre district of Paris, needs to get away from her ex-BFF/boyfriend who returned to his parents home next door. Autumn has been penpals with Rosie for over twenty years. They have shared their ups and downs and always been there for each other, but never met. Rosie invites Autumn to her home in The Lake District in the UK, and she decides to take her up on the offer. She will be able to spend time in the places where her idol, Beatrix Potter, did her illustrations and hopefully it will inspire her to get back to her work. Shortly after arriving, she meets Dane, a cyclist who ran her over. He is in the Lake District dealing with his own problems. They strike up a friendship and end up inspiring each other as well as helping one another to deal with their issues and problems. Will the Lake District heal them both? Will they be able to be more than just friends?
The Start of Something Wonderful is the first book in a new series by Jessica Redland. I loved the setting and went online to check out images of the area, so gorgeous. Autumn has a lot of baggage and secrets that she needs to deal with if she wants to move on in her life. I felt for her as I learned about her past. I loved the friendship between Rosie and Autumn. I had penpals growing up (people I met at girl guide camp, ones the teachers set up) but I never continued those friendships after a year or so, so that really intrigued me. Of course with technology the way it is today, emails would be more the norm. There were two men in this book that played a role in Autumn's life: Etienne her ex and Dane, the man who ran her down with his bike. Etienne was frustrating for sure. He had been in and out of Autumn's life for years and as I learned his story, I felt bad that things had never worked out for him and Autumn, but he still made me angry at times. Dane was a sweetheart, ever helpful and kind. As Autumn and Dane began working together, you could see sparks, but could they overcome their issues. As with all of Jessica Redland's books, there are real issues in this book. There is a lot that people will be able to relate to personally or from someone they know. There were lost of emotional highs and lows, but the story ends on an uplifting note and I was happy to see the journey the characters went on. Another enjoyable story by this auto-read author for me that I highly recommend.
A wonderful start to a brand new series. Set in the Lake District, a place I've had lots of summer holidays and know it well. Lovely characters this book was full of warmth and wit. Can't wait for the next one. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
“I find it easier to think that this is what the universe had planned for us all along, that we’re exactly where we’re meant to be, doing what we’re meant to be doing.”
The Start of Something Wonderful is the first book in a new series, Escape to the Lakes, by Jessica Redland. It was my first time reading this author's work.
Autumn Laine is half English, half French, and has spent most of her life in England with her grandparents, only visiting her parents in Paris for holidays. After losing her grandfather and her job as an illustrator in quick succession, Autumn loses her creative spark. Desperately in need of a break, she visits Paris, where she runs into her ex-boyfriend. This brings back troublesome memories, and she takes up her pen pal, Rosie’s offer to visit her in The Lake District, UK.
Shortly on arrival, Autumn meets Dane, who is dealing with his own problems. They become good friends and inspire each other. They also help one another face their issues and bring out the best in each other.
What I enjoyed about the book is the beautiful setting and that all the characters are so likeable. I also appreciated how Autumn evolves gradually and rediscovers her creativity, confidence, and ultimately, herself.
All in all, this is a warm and sweet story of love, friendship, and finding your place in the world!
There are days that a cozy British chic lit book are what you crave. Life is crashing around our heroine and in a blink of an eye she inherits a ramshackle thatched cottage or accepts a stay at a century old castle or is offered a house sit along the coast. Of course there are quirky village people and a handsome love interest. An author's ability to make the story unique and engrossing makes or breaks the tale. Unfortunately this e-book was bad. There were so many coincidences that made it truly unbelievable. There were storylines that never went anywhere...green men. The main characters moved in together within weeks and then quickly professed their love. I kept reading thinking it'll get better; there will be a large plot twist. But, no. It was a very plain, vanilla ending. Disappointing.
What an absolute joy this book is. I've read and loved every one of Jessica's books and couldn't wait to dive into the pages of this one. Where previous books have been set on the Yorkshire coast this one is centred in the stunningly scenic Lake District. I adored the beautiful descriptions of that area and quickly fell in love with the lovely characters. Autumn is an illustrator who has lost her mojo and has recently lost her beloved granddad. She grew up in France and moved to London but is then invited to visit her pen friend, Rosie, who lives in the Lake District. The two have been corresponding for decades but had never met. I loved the warm friendship between these two ladies. Autumn's ex, Etienne, a French man is also a central character as is the lovely Dane, writer of children's books. There are a lot of references to Beatrix Potter which I found especially interesting and endearing. There are many emotions, secrets, dilemmas and a slow burn romance that kept me riveted to this book. As this is the first in a series I think we can be assured that this really is ' The Start of Something Wonderful'. I will be recommending this book to all my book groups and reading friends. My thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for an ARC. My review is voluntarily given.
Jessica Redland- The Start Of Something Wonderful. Escape To The Lakes - book 1
This is the start of a brand new series from million copy selling author, Jessica Redland. Previously, her books have been based in Yorkshire, and have been Yorkshire to the core.
This new series moves east and is set in the beautiful Lake District.
For Autumn Laine (love the name) life has lost it’s sparkle. She lost her job, her beloved grandad died and some time out, staying in Paris with her parents doesn’t go well after a face from Autumn’s past shows up.
In a bid to get away and find herself again, Autumn flees to The Lake District to stay with her best friend Rosie. The only catch is, that despite being friends for over twenty years, the pair have never actually met.
Autumn is a massive fan of Beatrix Potter, so the pull from the lakes is even stronger for her.
Once settled at Rosie’s house, Autumn sets out to explore the area. A collision with a man and a bike brings Dane into the story. He is also dealing with his own life traumas.
Together the pair form a blossoming friendship that could maybe lead to more. That is, as long as the past doesn’t show up and pull Autumn in a different direction.
The first thing that you can’t help but notice with this book, is of course the cover. As with all of JR’s books, it’s very pretty and to me, it vividly conjures up the sights and smells of actually standing by that lake. I appreciate that this sounds a little (or a lot) bonkers, but this is the first book where I have actually been able to ‘feel’ the cover. When everyone has stopped laughing at my madness, I’ll share my thoughts on what’s inside this gorgeous book.
I found the story easy to get into. The characters are all well defined and it quickly felt like I’d known them forever.
Autumn was instantly likeable. She’s been through a lot, and I was fully invested in her journey to rediscover her sparkle and to find herself once more. Dane is also a likeable fellow. Kind and caring, with his own journey to happiness that he needs to travel.
There is a wonderful cast of characters in this story. They are all beautifully written and well crafted. I’m very much looking forward to getting to know them better as this series progresses.
I must mention the setting of the story. Jessica Redland has captured the natural beauty of The Lake District perfectly. The village of Willowdale and it’s community is drawn with exquisite clarity and warmth. The author’s love for The Lake District shines through in her writing and gives her setting something quite special.
#TheStartOfSomethingWonderful is of course a charming story in itself. But woven into the fabric of the book, is a very heartfelt tribute to Beatrix Potter. JR has expertly brought the two together.
One thing that I believe Jessica Redland excels at, is the sheer depth of research that she puts into her books. Whether it’s the RNLI, Hedgehog rescue, Parisian life and language or Beatrix Potter, JR’s research is extensive and thorough.
To sum up, #TheStartOfSomethingWonderful is a gentle romp through the Lakes, with many twists and turns along the way. It has characters and a setting that you will fall in love with. And a big chunk of Beatrix Potter at it’s heart. #JessicaRedland has created another outstanding piece of writing. It has a slightly different vibe to her other books, but I mean that in a good way. #TheStartOfSomethingWonderful feels fresh and exciting, while still retaining everything that JR does best. It’s a book with warmth, humour, a big heart, romance that will make you melt and at the end you will be full of all the feels and keen to read what comes next.
Is this the start of something wonderful? I think that it quite possibly is. Another credit to you Jessica Redland. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
With thanks to Netgalley, Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books for a digital arc of this title.
This was a sweet book. It's about Autumn, who is still stuck on the guy she was in love with when she was much younger. He married someone else when they were just out of university. Their parents are neighbors, and she has hope for a renewed relationship when he shows up at his parents house and is now single. However, after some major upheaval in her life, she goes to visit her long-time penpal in the Lake District. While there, she gets immersed in the home of Beatrix Potter and reinvigorates her career aspirations. She also finds new romance along the way.
This is a fairly quiet but enjoyable took - great on audio. The setting is charming and vividly described. I'm looking forward to the next in the series. There is discussion of death of a grandparent and pregnancy complications, so take care if those are difficult topics for you.
"Autumn Laine has lost her creative sparkle. After losing her grandad and her job as an illustrator in quick succession, she is at a crossroads in life and needs a break." - These first two sentences of the synopsis were all I needed to dive straight into this new story.
After reading 9 previous titles from Jessica Redland, I knew that I was going to love it, and I did! Jessica knows how to pack a punch in her books, and heavy topics aren't being brushed aside.
Knowing that his book is just the start of a brand-new series, I already cannot wait to see what's in store for Autumn, Dane, Rosie, Alice and all the other wonderful characters already present in this book. Highly recommend picking up this book and get immersed into the setting of the Lake District.
Autumn is half English, half French and has spent most of her life living between the two places, when living In England during her school years she lived with her Grandparents.
Autumn has spent the last few years settled in England because her Grandad is on his own now and has been sick for a while and in hospice care, she’s also got to deal with possibly loosing her job as an illustrator.
When the worst happens and she looses both her Grandad and her job at the same time she’s lost and afraid, after some time in Paris with her parents she jumps at the chance of a change when her pen pal and special friend Rosie asks her to come to the Lake District to stay with her, she can’t resist especially because she loves Beatrix Potter and what better place to get inspiration?.
Autumn is 35 which I absolutely loved, I’ve read a few of Jessica’s books and that always stands out to me that all her main characters seem to be 30 or older which I appreciate as us older readers tend to be left out in the cold and I can relate so much better to an older character ( even though 35 is definitely still young, but most books are about characters who are 20+)
We follow Autumn when she has to navigate so many changes in her life, it’s filled with old loves, new loves, best friends, Paris, the Lake District and I loved every single moment of it.
The book is just filled to the brim of wholesome characters that I can’t wait to hear more about in the future books in the series, especially Rosie because she’s so lovely and “His Lordship” because he’s so mysterious.
Reading all about Autumn visiting Beatrix Potters home Hill Top was so special to me because it’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit, I adore Beatrix Potter and her work reminds me so much of my childhood, I also adored the running theme of Beatrix Potter throughout the book it was all just so lovely and heartwarming.
I’m going to recommend this book to all my fellow book worms.
If you’re in the mood for a predictable, improbable, simple romance that mostly takes place in Beatrix Potter’s historic Lake District, this is the book for you. The title describes the plot, and the “something wonderful” is the romance that develops between Autumn and Dane. Each are in their mid to late thirties and have come from broken relationships. They are both artistic but need encouragement to pursue their talents, and are “perfect” for each other. I was surprised that the author was satisfied to write such an obvious, uncomplicated romance, from their first meeting to the closing chapter. And no one ever uttered the word “rebound.”
What I liked: Autumn’s 24-year pen pal friendship with Rosie. And I liked Rosie. Loved all the Beatrix Potter references. Enjoyed the location of the Lake District and the rural countryside.
What I didn’t like: An author can choose any name for their character, so why chose “Autumn Laine” without ever mentioning how corny it is? Autumn and Dane’s relationship moves way too fast, especially considering the short amount of time they’ve known each other. Rosie’s mom, Alice, has mental health issues which are hinted at, but it’s a plot thread that gets left behind. I strongly disliked Autumn’s first boyfriend Étienne. He was unrealistically one-dimensional.
I am a Beatrix Potter fan, so was familiar with the characters and the stories though that isn’t necessary in order to read this novel. In fact, Peter Rabbit was the first library book I remember reading, when I was two years old. But I think Potter could have written a more interesting, plot-thickened novel than this. And oh no! This is book #1 of a series? What could possibly come next? I can promise you I won’t be reading it.
Thanks to Amazon Prime for the opportunity to read this book.
The only reason that I “read” this was to fulfill a prompt for the Kindle Spring Challenge 2024. Haven’t read Ms. Redland’s books before, and in all honesty, never heard of her before either. What I will say is that I used to love the contemporary romance novels, but for a few years now they haven’t been my go-to for what books I read now. I read the first 30% and found myself procrastinating opening it back up to read the rest of it. Hate to say this, but I really wasn’t enjoying myself. I have so many other books that I want to read this year to fulfill other challenges’ prompts, which includes tackling my TBR. So, I went from 30% to the last chapter of the book, just to see how it would all end. I knew who the young heroine would end up with, and so, that was a typical HEA. However, I’m glad I didn’t read the in-between because it had a trigger of mine regarding the loss of a pregnancy. If you like contemporary romances that are set in France and England, you may really like it. Just be conscious of the trigger warning. It’s just a genre I do not read any longer, which makes me somewhat biased. 2**
Maybe a 2.5 but not because it did anything wrong this book is fine. Aggressively fine. It’s sweet and happy and the setting is sweet and beautiful, buuuut I felt incredibly detached and just meh. I definitely see the merit in it though and I did finish it so that’s a good sign. I needed a bit more drama.
The book began promisingly, but the forced and cheesy chemistry between Dane and her was off-putting. The author went overboard with the references to Beatrix Potter, which became overly annoying. Despite its potential, the book's quality was overshadowed by its cheesiness and excessive Beatrix Potter references.
(Escape to the Lakes – Book 1) Jessica Redland is one of my favourite authors. I love her books for so many reasons and I was therefore very excited to hear she had a new series out. I couldn’t wait to jump into this one and see what delights there were!
Our main character here is Autumn Laine. She is half-English and half-French, with her parents living in Paris. She soon has to deal with two bits of bad news, as she is made redundant from her job as an illustrator for a greetings card company, and she loses her beloved grandad at the age of ninety-five.
Autumn has a penpal called Rosie Jacobs who she has been writing to since they were eleven years old. As they exchange their 400th letter after a postal-based friendship that has lasted twenty-four years, Rosie invites Autumn to stay with her in the Lake District. She lives in the grounds of Willowdale Hall near Derwent Water and they have never yet met.
As Autumn needs to escape an ex-boyfriend, a trip to the Lake District filled with its connections to Beatrix Potter – an inspiration for Autumn as an artist – seems to be a good place to go next, to see if she can find her artistic mojo.
Wow! This book was amazing! I mean, I’ve never read a bad Jessica Redland book (They don’t exist), but this one was just gorgeous! So many lovely things about it, where do I start?
One thing - I was so pleased this book included penpals! I have had penpals since I was nine years old when I acquired a Danish penpal through Brownies. While I don’t have the time these days to write to as many people as I did years ago, I still have penpals and some I’ve been writing to for thirty years or so. It’s a great hobby and I was thrilled the characters in this book included two penpals.
I also enjoyed all the references to Beatrix Potter throughout the book. Like many children, I adored her books and still love all her animal characters she brought to life so beautifully. (I am a big fan of both rodents and dolls’ houses and I suspect both of these may have come from her book The Tale of Two Bad Mice.) I also loved my virtual trip round Hill Top, where she used to live, and went off on a (Peter) Rabbit hole online, looking at photos and videos of Hill Top and Castle Cottage.
But back to the story! Autumn’s penpal Rosie lives in Horseshoe Cottage with her mum Alice and their adorable cocker spaniel Toffee. I loved this whole set-up, the cottage and surroundings are so easy to picture and Rosie is a sweetheart.
Then there is Dane, who Autumn literally bumps into. He is visiting family in the area and again, he’s just a brilliant character! (If he was 15 years older… oh and not fictional…) I love how he has so much sensitivity about him, he doesn’t come across as one of those macho types you often find in books. I liked how both he and Autumn are creative types, but in different ways. That was a real bonus to the book and making their interaction completely believable. I am a HUGE fan of Jessica’s Hedgehog Hollow series. In fact, it’s probably my favourite book series of all time. So really The Start of Something Wonderful had a lot to live up to, but this is another triumph – and there are a few cute hedgehogs in there too. I am thrilled this is the start of a new series and I can’t wait to read the next book in the Escape to the Lakes series and catch up with the beautiful setting and all the wonderful characters who live there.

My Opinion
I started reading this on the bus which was a mistake as it gets off to a sad start. There is something about starting another series by Jessica Redland, when I was given this opportunity to join the blog tour there was no hesitation. Full of warmth and friendship this book was a delight to read.
Jessica has created some wonderful characters and I am looking forward to seeing what happens next with this series.
I absolutely love Jessica Redland’s books, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her latest, The Start of Something Wonderful. I wasn’t disappointed.
I really loved this book. I loved Autumn, she’s had such a tough time recently, but she has persistence and keeps working on getting her artistic mojo back. I loved the fact that she’s an illustrator, I’ve not read many books with one as a main character, so it makes a refreshing change. I loved reading about the progression of her artwork, as well as the character development. It made a lovely intertwining story.
I really liked Dane too, he seemed honest and kind, to character traits. He treats Autumn with respect and kindness, and is willing to talk about any issues, which is also an excellent thing.
I also loved Alice and Rosie. It’s lovely to see their relationship and how they support it each other, though I think it’s a huge shame that Alice won’t get help for her PTSD. I hope that we’ll get to see more of them in future books, and hopefully see Alice accepting some therapy so she can move forward.
I haven’t mentioned it much yet, but I absolutely loved the romance too. I loved how comfortable they felt with each other, and how they encouraged one another in their creative pursuits. And I absolutely loved the ending.
Overall, this was such a lovely story. Full of a sense of community, friendships, and of course romance. The Start of Something Wonderful is clearly the start of a wonderful series!

I was given a copy of this book, my opinions are my own.
When I was offered the opportunity to read and review the first book in the new series by Jessica Redland, I jumped at it as I'm a huge fan of this author.
I certainly wasn't disappointed when I started reading. The location of the Lake District is amazing, especially since I've spent some time there. I loved all the references to Beatrix Potter.
I loved Autumn, she was in limbo as her grandad had just died and she had lost her job and her mojo. She thought spending time with her parents in France would help but that brought its own issues, Etienne in particular.
The penpal storyline with Rosie is lovely, full of warmth and friendship. I remember having one at school and was lucky to get to meet her. Rosie and Autumn have an amazing friendship despite never having met.
The storyline with Dane was lovely and I was really pleased he and Autumn were able to help one another. I loved how Dane, Autumn and Rosie's characters all grew throughout the book.
A real sense of community comes through the book. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series as there are lots of wonderful characters and, I'm sure, potential great storylines.
Thank you @rachelsrandomresources for my gifted copy and spot on the tour. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Start of Something Wonderful really was a beautiful read. It's got a gorgeous, country setting in England's Lake District and a bevy of friendly locals.
In a time of upheaval, both personal and professional, Autumn visits her penpal Rosie's Lake District home and finds the sanctuary, support and inspiration she needs. Beatrix Potter, her artistic idol, is a large part of the plot as Autumn visits Potter's haunts while searching for her lost artistic mojo.
The romantic side of the story is sweet and includes two men representing Autumn's past and future. A dashing divorced Frenchman who broke her heart but wants a second chance vies with a generous, outdoor-loving, volunteer-minded Englishman. I liked the way this side of the plot played out and how it demonstrated Autumn's newfound confidence and strength.
I loved the descriptions of the surrounding areas, making you feel that you are there in between the characters. Along with the happy moments in the story, such as her and Rosie’s friendship, the way Autumn and Dane’s relationship progressed, there was some sad/emotional times too, which Jessica covered sensitively.
Jessica captured my heart with her fabulous imagination and her ability to create pictures in my mind of the places she takes us to.
I can't wait to read more about Autumn and her new neighbors.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for my honest opinion 😊
I’ve missed Jessica Redland’s writing so much and I don’t think I quite realised how much until I fell into this book and got immersed into the characters world. Despite this being the first book in a new series I was transported into Willowdale with Autumn and Dane throughout the book. I think this was helped by my love of the lakes but also Jessica’s writing as it’s descriptive and sets the scene bit in a way that melds beautifully with the story.
Autumn is such a lovely character and I feel that you can’t help but feel for her, especially with everything she’s been through which we learn as we progress. I could picture her drawings so clearly and would love to be able to draw as well as that, you get taken into Beatrix Potter’s world with her and I think Hill Top will have to be on my list of places to visit if I get the chance!
Dane felt like a really genuine character as well, a guy who wears kindness on his sleeve and is going to be Autumn’s biggest cheerleader - alongside Rosie and her mum of course! The whole village gave off a sense of friendship despite it clearly also being a tourist location but I think this just made the setting more vivid and believable in my head.
This book just felt like a massive book hug, transporting me straight into my memories of the lakes and leaving me with a massive smile on my face, I can’t wait to start A Breath of Fresh Air very soon!
Another great book by Jessica Redland. I loved the Hedgehog Hollow books and devoured them as they came out. I was pleasantly surprised to stumble across this book and find it’s the start of a whole new series - her longest series yet according to the acknowledgments at the end of the book.
The main characters in this book are great and you find yourself being swept away with Autumn, wishing her to be happy and then discovering a whole new happy. This book inspires adventures and being courageous. The only bad thing is I now have to wait patiently for the rest of the series and can’t binge read them in one go!
A brand new series from Jessica Redland and it’s amazing! I’m quite new to the Lake District area, I’ve only visited a few times and seemingly the very touristy parts but it was great to read about places that I’d heard of, passed, or stopped off at., it helped me connect with the characters and the whole story. I’ve visited the Beatrix Potter museum in town, but not Hill Top Farm as I had small children who were only interested in the characters of Peter Rabbit but this book has really made me want to go back and visit Hill Top and get the fuller ‘Potter’ experience.
Another thing I loved about this book was that an entire friendship and essentially the basis of the book revolves around writing letters as children. I loved that Rosie and Autumn kept it up for 24 years and became life long friends. I loved my pen pals as a child and wish I’d kept in touch, receiving letters on your doormat is something lost on children these days, it’s all emails, texts or FaceTimes.
Dane was a great character too, I loved his quiet calm presence. His back story really touched me, forced into a relationship so early and a career he wasn’t passionate about, I’m so pleased he got his happy ending, and still had a great relationship with his son. Autumn’s back story was equally as heartfelt, I really felt for her and her grandad after her miscarriage, and how by not talking about it for 14 years had a real effect on her that she wasn’t even aware of until she finally tried to move on. Her and Dane make a great couple in so many ways, I can’t wait to see what literary projects they come up with in the future.
Rosie and get mam Alice have quite a story to tell, I’m hoping it includes ‘His Lordship’ in some way. I can’t wait to find out.
I am not exagerating when I say Jessica is one of my all time favorite authors. She has a real gift of creating characters that I immediately love and feel like I know personally and therefore I feel everything they are feeling. I ended up reading this book full of excitement and with a lump in my throat at times. It's really quite incredible the effect Jessica's writing has on me!
This is Autumn's story and she tells it first person, which I love! The start of the story where she loses both her job and her grandfather within a short time is heartbreaking, but then the story moves on to Autumn trying to start over, but where should she start over, where will she find her mojo again? Paris with her parents or the Lake District with her penpal Rosie? The story takes us all sorts of places and introduces us to some wonderful characters that we end up caring about deeply. The writing simply makes the characters and the places come alive. I just kept smiling and then being moved to tears again and again when we hear about both Autumn and Dane's past. A really touching story!
I can honestly say I loved every minute of this story and am now eagerly awaiting the next story in this series. Jessica couldn't have made a better choice for the main character of the next story in this series!
This book was just amazing, we have Beatrix Potter (who I adore) the Lake District and its stunning scenery. This is the first book in a new series, and you will not be disappointed. The one thing I loved most about the book was imagining the stunning scenery and Beatrix house.
I loved all the characters, they each bring something different to the story, without being too distracting. If you like Jessica's books, then you'll love this one. I can highly recommend.
Such a fantastic book set in a beautiful place filled with fascinating characters, I totally became engrossed with the story of Autumn and her journey to the Lake District, and hearing about her experiences that have come back into her life in an unexpected way. I enjoyed seeing her friendship with long term pen pal Rosie blossom and I especially enjoyed watching her drawing mojo return too when she finds inspiration in the Lakes. Lots of interesting happenings kept me fully engaged in the story and I enjoyed every moment with this new series. It definitely is the start of something wonderful - I am already excited to revisit this gorgeous setting and reconnect with this brilliant characters in book two.
4.5 ⭐️ I didn’t want to put this one down. There were enough character nuances to make it stand out from the standard cozy romance storyline. The Lake District comes alive and is almost a character in itself. I loved the bond between the two unconventional best friends as well.
