Stanley Lane-Poole was a British orientalist and archaeologist.
Poole was from a famous orientalist family as his paternal grandmother Sophia Lane Poole, uncle Reginald Stuart Poole and great-uncle Edward William Lane were famous for their work in this field.
His other great-uncle was Richard James Lane, a distinguished Victorian lithographer and engraver.
He worked for the British Museum from 1874 to 1892.

Tarih meraklılarının, şimdiye değin öğrendiklerinden başka ve saray dedikodularının ötesinde pek bir şey öğrenemeyeceği bir kitap. Kitabın 1888'de, yani bilginin şimdiki gibi evrenselleşmediği bir dönemde yazılmış olması, yazarın yaptığı-yazdığı-önerdiği tarihsel olarak doğru olmayan iddiaların varlığını hoşgörebilmenize sebep olabiliyor. Bunun dışında kitap, Osmanlı'ya dönemin İngiliz bakışı hakkında fikir edinmenize de yardımcı oluyor. Yazarın Osmanlı'yı kurtaracak yegane güç olarak İngiliz emperyalizmini görmesi, Türkiyeli bir okurun midesini bulandırmaya yetiyor, maalesef...
Genç çevirmenin ilk çeviri deneyimi olmasına rağmen gayet başarılı bir iş çıkardığının altını çizmekte fayda olduğunu düşünüyorum.

I read the 1881 version of this book. A book written when ottoman empire still existed. Should not be read as a first resource. There are some minor mistakes.
